Om Shri Sai Ram,

Sridi Baba Miracle

Sometimes, when we are overwhelmed with problems we think that we are destined to undergo the pain and suffering. The truth, however, is that if we invoke Baba from the bottom of our hearts, He will find a way out of even what is pre-ordained.

Baba can accomplish things that are beyond our imagination. Here's the story of a woman who was destined to be reborn eight times. But, saved her from the cycle of births and liberated her in one life itself:

A devotee of Baba was bed-ridden with a chronic illness. As she was struggling with her ailing health, doctors were trying their best to revive her vitals and restore her to a state of normalcy. Unfortunately, not much happened in way of progress and one night her body turned blue. It appeared as if she was going to pass away.

Suddenly, Baba and Raghavendra Swami, a divine saint from Mantralaya, appeared by her bedside. Baba gave her a packet of vibhuti and said, “Child, according to your destiny this is your time to leave earth. According to your purva karmas (prior deeds) you have to take birth for another eight lives. Fear not, though, I will save you. I will let you die eight times and resurrect you immediately in this lifetime itself. You will be freed on the eighth time and shall become a guru yourself.”

True to Baba’s words, she did pass away but woke up almost immediately due to Baba’s grace. The process repeated eight consecutive times as predicted by Baba. After the eighth instance, her health was restored and as all her karmic load was burnt to ashes, she herself became a saint, a sadguru in her own right.

She even gave divine experiences to her followers. One of her followers was about to fall once and she appeared on the scene and held her child, leading him to safety. Karmas, destiny, fate — all of them have their place in this universe but faith in God and God’s grace can ferry us through any difficult situation. He knows how to get us out of any trouble.

Wavering and indecisiveness will affect you, if you want to practice Righteousness. If you are not stabilized in the Knowledge of the Self, you will not have a good sense of direction for your actions, nor will you achieve true victory. That is why the Geetha lays so much emphasis on the necessity to know both the kshethra (field or the body) and the kshethrajna (the Knower in the body). Know both, and then, you are entitled to the title, Amrithasya Puthraah: "Children of Immortality." Through devotion to God alone, this knowledge can be attained. Devotion also purifies your heart and elevates your inner feelings and gives you a broad, universal vision and brings to you the Grace of God. Plants cannot rise up to drink the life giving fluid from clouds, hence the clouds come down and pour as rain.

Normally, we find old ladies doing japam/meditation. In fact it is one of the best techniques.
If one practices daily, it eases negative karma and sin. Because, it is so effective that it
focuses the attention of a person on the Divine power. Japa meditation is nothing but
chanting of a repetitive chanting of mantras related to particular ishta or kula devata of a
person. This type of meditation is generally practiced by religious people who adopt
spiritual practices regularly. Repetition of a mantra with concentration enables to free
the attention of a person on other things without a wavering mind and facilitates to bring
the heart to dwell on it. Thus, the constant chanting of a mantra viz. AUM or OM brings
a great energy to the physical body and also to the mind. For e.g. if we refer to the Upanishads
it is mentioned as :

With upright body, head, and neck lead the mind and its power into the heart; and the OM of
Brahman will then be thy boat with which to cross the rivers of fear.

Therefore, one has to focus the attention on the chanting or meditation, for a a few minutes
initially and then extend it slowly. One has to train the mind accordingly so as to make it stable.
This calls for practice every day for a certain period of time without any interruption.

You must be convinced that 'you' are but the shadow of the Absolute. Of course, it is only at the end of a long and systematic process of Sadhana (spiritual efforts) that you will reach and stay fixed in the state of that Truth; until then, you are likely to identify yourself with this body and forget that the body which casts a shadow is itself a shadow. The first step in that Sadhana is the adherence to Dharma (righteousness) in every individual and social act. The Dharma which is followed in relation to the objective world will automatically lead on to Dharma in the spiritual field also; only you must stick to it through thick and thin. Steadfastness is needed in the path of Righteousness. That alone is the sign of true surrender.

- Divine Discourse, Aug 1, 1956.

A person who observes Dharma is protected according to Baba. Dharma can be explained in
different forms but it is principle of righteousness. A person who does not observe Dharma
according to Baba is not given protection. Dharma envelops all external deeds besides one's
thoughts and other mental practices which leads to formulation of the character of a person.
If a person observes the true Dharma, it can take him/her towards the Divine power. The word
Dharma is derived from Sanskrit origin of dhri defining as uphold or to sustain. For e.g.
the Head of a Nation has to observe dharma to protect the Nation and to provide a secured
environment for all its citizens. If every citizen observes dharma, the Nation can attain prosperity.
This is what, some of the Kings who ruled their Kingdom rigidly observed it, which can be noticed
from our History. There is a quote to say that if you protect dharma and that will protect you.
Some people think that Dharma is a religion. Religion is only a method of worship. Dharma is a
very ancient word which can be noticed from our Puranas. To be precise, the code of dharma
sets forth an ideal for every person to strive for. Therefore, every person has to endeavour to observe
dharma to lead a good life according to Hindu scriptures. Performance of one's duty in the right
path takes him/her to a righteous path and it could provide a universally acceptable form based
on hindu scriptures. According to Manu :

ahimsa_ satyamasteyam s'aucamindriyanigrahah
etam sa_ma_sikam dharma ca_turvarn.yebravi_nmanuh (Manu 10.63)
Non-violence, truthfulness, not acquiring illegitimate wealth, purity and
control of senses, are in brief the common dharma for all the Varnas.

In the present, practice of devotion, worship and rituals are for the sake of better comforts and more luxury for the individuals themselves. Devotion has degenerated into a business deal. Often one prays, “Please give me this, I shall give You so much.” If they feel one shrine promises more, the current shrine is given up. If even in the new shrine, one does not get quick returns, then they quickly look elsewhere to some ‘other’ God who gives more profit! Many people wander in this manner. Some also think, “If I stand amongst many others, God will not notice me. I must stand in a unique position and shout to attract His attention!” Do not behave foolishly! Hold fast to noble ideals. Do not try to bring down the Almighty to your limited vision. Rise up, strengthen your detachment and establish yourself in discrimination, then your goal is brought nearer.

When Sri Sathya Sai Baba, at the tender age of fourteen was finally brought to Puttaparthi, after months of fruitless treatment by specialists in medicine and magic, devotees flocked around Him and gained His grace, every day, in ever increasing number. Baba was all the while declaring that He was Shirdi Sai Baba and no other; He was distributing to all the Udi He got by a mere wave of His hands; He was inspiring, curing, consoling, strengthening and blessing every one, as He was doing in the previous Shirdi manifestation also. When a few doubters of the continuity and identity between the two Babas approached Him one day, He lifted His palms and holding them up to their faces, said, “Look”. They looked and got Karathalamalaka proof! One palm was a shining picture of Sri Sathya Sai Baba (!) and the other was a shining picture of Shirdi Sai Baba (!) both equal in size and splendour!
This was long ago at Puttaparthi, with Baba concretely in front of the questioners. Now, listen to Sri. C. H. of New Delhi, “It was exactly three months ago. I was returning on my cycle from my office in Old Delhi to my residence in New Delhi. I had been to Puttaparthi only once and I was so fascinated by Baba that I felt eager to visit the place again. But, I must say that I could not quite understand why a village boy from Andhra should call Himself ‘Baba’ and relate a peculiar story about Himself that He was ‘Shirdi Baba’ in His previous birth. Strangely enough that day, while coming along that road, this doubt was distracting me. Suddenly, I was alerted by some one on cycle who pulled up along side of the road and accosted me thus: “Well, have you finished office?” He was an old but hefty person dressed in white, with a kerchief round his head. I said “Yes,” automatically; He asked me “Then, can you come with me for a few minutes to that tomb over there; I wish to talk to you.” So, we directed our cycles to that ruined tomb, riding two abreast for a furlong or two. We got down and sat on the grass, with our backs against the wall.
It was the old man who began the conversation. “My friend, you have planned to go to South… is it not? Do not cancel it or postpone it,” he said. I was astounded. It nearly took my breath away. I thought I must tell him about my doubts, the absurdity of Shirdi Baba being born again etc. So, without further enquiry, I poured out my heart to that old man. He evidently relished my story, for his eyes gleamed and there was a merry laugh hovering around his lips. When I had finished, he stared at me full in the face and holding both his palms spread in front of me, commanded, “Look.” I looked and (would you believe it?) one palm was a portrait of Sri Sathya Sai Baba and the other palm was a picture of Shirdi Sai Baba! When I had recovered from the exhilaration, He told me “Do not neglect this great opportunity, my boy.” We both rode back and the old man turned in the direction from which He had come (!) and …… even as I was looking at Him and His cycle…… melted into thin air.”
The same Karathalamalaka proof, eighteen years later! Baba materialising Himself 1500 miles away, to direct the steps of a devotee who was hesitating at the crossroads! The continuity and the identity are as indisputable as the Berry in the Palm!

Everyone knows that devotion is a holy and sacred act. In other words, devotion is a religious worship
and not demanding anything in return from the Supreme Power. It should reflect a true prayer. Devotion
enables a person to have a particular frame of mind completely devoted towards HIM. Devotion in fact
has to reflect a person's thoughts and feelings only towards the Supreme Power. Prayer, Bhajans, etc
helps a person to enhance the level of devotion. Prayer develops a true atmosphere in a person. To be
precise, attitude of a person's mind and heart must unite together to get the grace of the Supreme Power.
True worship will certainly bring in the desired result and that there is no need to look for another temple to
jump i.e. from temple to another temple so as to derive the desired result. True Devotion
must engage the heart and mind absolutely towards the Supreme Power. It may not be
easy to get the bliss of the Supreme Power, if the lips alone chant the mantra and not the heart and
mind associated with it. Moving about from temple to another is not a true devotion. Perhaps that
activity is not a recognized symbol and it shows a person's spiritual weakness.

The greatest obstacle in the path of surrender is egoism (ahamkaram) and Attachment or Possessiveness (mamakaram). This is ingrained in your personality since ages and its tentacles go deeper and deeper with the experience of every succeeding life. It can be removed only by the twin detergents of discrimination and renunciation. Devotion is the water to wash away this dirt of ages, and the soap of japam, dhyaanam and yoga (repetition of God's name, meditation and communion) will help to remove it quicker and more effectively. Slow and steady progress will surely win the race in this one; quicker means of travel can spell disaster. Proceed step by step in your spiritual practices - placing one steady step before you take the next. Do not waver or slide back two paces with one step forward. Cultivate deep faith - that will make your progress steady!

Mantra Japam is prevalent since ancient days, and it has its origin in Vedas. Japam will
be fruitful if it is chanted knowing the meaning of it. If a person chants it continuously
with the consciousness of its meaning, it will prevail in one's heart and mind so as to attain
Supreme Power's bliss. Some do japams louder and some within the mind. Generally, the
japam done within the mind bears more effect. One may not get concentration initially.
Hence a beginner has to try to chant louder initially and then slowly change to reduce the
tone and ultimately do it within the mind by bringing the concentration so as to get in touch
with one’s own self. The rhythm and the meaning of the Japam facilitates to enhance ones
concentration. The results of Japam bring enormous benefits. It not only brings-in spiritual
advantages, peace of mind, stress and depression gets low, enhances improvement in the person's
ability to concentrate, opens-up self-development, eliminates egoism and negative virtues besides
it envelops over all development of spiritual, mental and physical features. As Baba says, one has
to get out from ahamkaram and possessiveness to attain the bliss of the Supreme Power.

Devotion is the water to wash away this dirt of ages, and the soap of japam, dhyaanam and yoga(repetition of God's name, meditation and communion) will help to remove it quicker and more effectively. Slow and steady progress will surely win the race in this one; quicker means of travel can spell disaster. Proceed step by step in your spiritual practices - placing one steady step before you take the next. Do not waver or slide back two paces with one step forward. Cultivate deep faith - that will make your progress steady!

Have you not heard the story of the lion suffering from a wound in the foot? A slave who was fleeing through the forest saw it and when he approached it with sympathy, the lion put out its paw. He then slowly pulled out the thorn that had caused all that pain and left the place, only to be arrested later and taken to Rome. There, they decided to throw him into the amphitheatre and let loose upon him a lion that had been recently captured. It was, however, the same lion which the slave had saved and so, its gratitude did not allow it to harm its saviour. See, even animals exhibit gratitude, not only the pet animals, but even the wild ones like the lion. Express your gratitude to the Creator who has poured into you nectar that grants immortality! Be grateful to the Lord for endowing you with powers of discrimination, detachment and evaluation.

God is not only creator but also HE is the protector. HE who rescues us from many troubles
and problems. Furthermore, salvation comes only from HIM. We all know God is the Creator,
who is very very powerful, ever present with us even without our knowledge, knowing everything
about us, and HE is the sovereign Supreme Power. He is saviour because he shows us the unchanging
love and affection irrespective of one's behaviour, HE shows HIS mercy when one approaches HIM
sincerely and faithfully with complete confidence/trust. Besides if one follows the righteous path in a
spiritual way observing truth, one can feel HIS just Supreme Power prevailing. Even the scientific world
has not refuted the existence of HIS Supreme Power and the Scientists have not lost the faith in HIM.
They pray HIM every time, whenever they start inventing something or trying to discover a method anew.
There is a clear statement that every man can find the reality of Supreme Power by using his/her common
sense and power of reasoning through worship, prayer, meditation, etc. We have the ancient scriptures
to support us in this direction. Only one's mind has to accept the reality of HIS supreme power. There are
lot of evidences like Kannappa Nayanar, Alwars, etc. who have seen the truth with their own eyes.

Make four resolutions about your life hereafter and live in joy. 1. Practise Purity - Desist from wicked thoughts, bad habits and mean activities that weaken your self-respect. 2. Do Service – Serve others, for they are the reflections of the same entity of which you yourself are another reflection. No one of you has any authenticity on your own, except with reference to your Creator, the Lord. 3. See Mutuality – Feel always the kinship with all creation. See the same current flowing through all objects in the Universe. 4. Live in Truth – Do not deceive yourself or others by distorting your experience.

The one who discriminates well before engaging in any activity, will naturally be righteous in conduct and behavior. - Baba

In olden days, ancestors used to guide everyone to follow certain guidelines or instructions
so as to lead a peaceful and healthy life. Some people used to understand and while
some may not understand that, however, they carried out the tasks faithfully without
questioning the elders. In the process, the youngsters derived the benefit. The youngsters
were ignorant but yet they did carry out the deeds without raising a query. The youngsters
never used to ridicule like these days. But the present generation people think themselves
to be too smart and intelligent and ask too many questions when the elders tell them to do
worship, prayer, meditation, etc. Furthermore, because of a joint family, the elders used
to guide the youngsters in day to day decisions and protected them from any troubles
that are likely to arise. Rather they guided the youngsters to lead a righteous life. The children used
to be very humble to obey the parents and accept their views assuming all that said and
done are for good of the family. One should have faith and trust on the elders and similarly
with the Supreme Power to achieve good results. The youngsters are to be advised properly
to achieve a good result, one should not lose faith and trust on the Supreme Power and should
not think that our custom or religious practices are outdated. The main problem these days is
that some lack self-discipline. Owing to lack of self-discipline, the youngsters don’t give up the
bad habits. Once a bad habit is formed or practiced it becomes a habit resulting in changes in the
behavioral pattern whether such people do it consciously or unconsciously and they keep on
doing and cannot desist from doing wrong things. As Baba says, one has to have purity of mind,
good deeds and desist from bad habits so as to lead a peaceful life. For all this, one has to regularly
practice prayer, worship, etc and rely on the Supreme Power for their up-liftment in life rather than
acquiring material assets alone.

What do people know of the motives that prompt the Lord and His actions? Some found fault with Sage Narada for repeating the name of the Lord, always, without intermission. But until Sayujyam (merging in the Absolute), the name has to be used; the idea of separation will end only with mergence, not before that. Do not waver or doubt when once you are convinced. Seek to understand and satisfy yourself. After that, do not be misled. When the Sun is over your head there will be no shadow; similarly when faith is steady in your head it should not cast any shadow of doubt

Initially everyone will have a doubt in Supreme Power's existence because it depends
on one's own faith. Thus faith becomes the main substance and it becomes the evidence
to tell others also. Once a person gains faith, he automatically attains hope
in proceeding towards the spiritual arena. In all religions generally people talk about faith and hope.
Trust and faith is the basic concept for a real life. One must have faith in the Supreme Power.
Firstly, one must have inner faith in one'self that he/she can certainly attain the Supreme Power's
bliss. Constant faith helps one to proceed towards the Spiritual arena in a fastest possible way.
There is a quote that that the Supreme Power's speed towards the devotee is faster than the
step the devotee takes towards HIM. Primarily, faith in the Supreme Power has to be unconditional
because his grace is always unconditional. If one gains faith in spiritual life, one does not stumble,
but rather runs faster towards the Supreme Power to see HIS glory. The aspiration and concentration
on HIM through one's meditation, prayer, worship, bhajans, nama sangeerthanam, namasmaran, etc
through sustained contemplation and chanting of HIS nama will lead to the realization of the Supreme
