A person once told Dr. Johnson, the famous English thinker, that he could seldom get time to recite the Name of God, what with the hundreds of things he had to do from morning till nightfall and even far into the night. Dr. Johnson replied with another question. He asked how millions of people found space to live upon the face of the earth, which is two-thirds water and the rest is too full of mountains, deserts, forests, icy regions, river beds, marshes and similar impossible areas. The questioner said that man somehow struggled to find living space. So too, said Dr. Johnson, man must somehow find a few minutes a day for prayer to the Lord. Keep the Name and Form of your choice ever in your consciousness. The Name must be as constant as breathing. And for this, practice is essential.

In the prison, you have to do the work you are ordered to, and do it well. You cannot argue that rewards are not distributed justly, and also you are not entitled to desist from your allotted task. If you do, your sentence will be extended or you will be transferred to another jail. As Baba says, one has to develop faith, which is primary. Similarly one has to have develop love.
Love can be nurtured only when there is peace of mind without any wavering of mind and complete
surrender to the will of the Supreme Power. One can earn money any time. It comes and goes but
not morality which is very difficult to earn. Morality of a person, can lead to real justice. Material requirements
have to be taken care of within one's limits and not to be at the cost of spiritual values. Wealth alone
is not important for a person.
Spiritual knowledge can fetch more wealth than material wealth. Man
should not be a slave for money though it provides mental and physical comforts.
One has to make
sincere effort to fetch the Supreme Power's grace only through sadhana. One should regularly do pooja, japam,
chanting of mantras, etc so as to keep away from ego and pride. Spiritual sadhana is very essential for
a person to reform oneself.

Detachment (vairagya) is a result of the Lord’s Grace; it needs years of yearning and struggle. Meanwhile begin today with the first step, which is cleansing of your mind and cultivation of virtues. Even if you are unable to start or follow these, at least do not laugh at those who do and discourage them. Do not depend upon others for doing your work or have someone attend to your personal wants. Do them yourself – that is the mark of being truly self-reliant and free! Never accept anything free from anyone. You must pay it back, in service or work. Thus, you will make yourselves self-respecting individuals. Receiving a favour means getting bound to the giver. Grow in self-respect and dignity. That is the best service you can do to yourself.

A man is subjected to many problems during one's life. If a person enjoy's life without any problem,
he or she never remembers the Supreme Power. A person has to cultivate a habit of prayer or worship
and has to perform it daily without fail so as to maintain a divine relationship. This can be maintained only
through spiritual exercises. One should understand that there is a supreme power which has to be obeyed with
complete trust and confidence. But for God's blessings one cannot enjoy the fruits of life. If one does not
guard oneself from misdeeds, he/she is likely to fall into bad virtues. Moral courage is essential to
possess good virtues in spite of trials and tribulations in life. Even in adverse circumstances, one should
not fall prey to weak heart and should not keep away from one's effort to retain the spiritual practices.
One should keep away from emotions. An emotionally unhealthy life will lead a person to nowhere.
One has to govern the mind properly so that he/she acts prudently to preserve intellectually good virtues.
Perseverance of good virtues are imperative and one should not get discouraged from difficulties. Any act
owing to ignorance may also lead to bad behavior at times. A person can be an example to others by
depicting intellectual superiority through spiritual exercises and practices.

The Lord has declared in the Geetha, “Mama maaya” or “My illusion”. This implies that the world is His handiwork, His Divine sport & glory (leela & mahima). It is devised as a training ground, an inspiration for those who desire to see Him, Who is its Source, Director, & Master. Once you see the world as the stage for His play, then you will no longer be misled, nor distracted, nor deceived by any tricks or stage effects. From illusion, you must get interested in the Author, the Master. The play is real only as long as it lasts, when you are in the theatre. So too, the world is just a mirage! A mirage does not originate from rain. It will not reach any lake or sea. It was not there before the sunrise, nor will it be there after the sunset. It is just an intervening phenomenon, it is best left alone! So too, God truly is more real than the world, this is the essence of Indian scriptures.

Spirituality, in its simplest form, is to gain an awareness either through the reading of scriptures
or through the faith/trust one has on the Supreme Power by way of chanting Namasmaranams
based on personal beliefs. It can be strengthened through prayer, meditation, religious practices,
spending time in Satsangh activities, etc.
Spiritual beliefs and practices help to analyse and
someone accountable for misdeeds. Sometimes a person finds it very hard to concentrate on
prayer or worship because he/she does not have complete trust on the supreme power. Persistent
practice should be the main theme for effective prayer with complete confidence. Depression is
unhealthy because it keeps a person to hang on with the pain. Sometimes one's emotions might
be stronger than usual because one might not have experienced troubles or sorrows before. The
grieving process takes time and healing usually happens gradually. If a person does regular
practice of spiritual exercises, the intensity of grief , though it varies, gets away gradually
depending on the spiritual environment.

God is bound to you by the closest bonds of Love. God is the nearest, the dearest, the most loving, the most eager companion and kinsman for man.

- Shri Sathya Sai Baba

Sai Inspires'

The Lord is everyone’s Father, in whose property each and everyone can claim a share. In order to get it, you must reach a certain stature; achieve a certain standard of intelligence. The infirm and the idiotic are not fit recipients of a worldly property. God’s property is His grace and love. So, to attain a share of His property, you must have devotion and discrimination. With these two, you are entitled to claim your share of Grace, which is your right. Bring with you devotion and take from the Lord, spiritual strength. This is a transaction that pleases Him. Bring to Him all you have – your sorrow and grief, worries and anxieties and take from Him, joy and peace, courage and confidence!

Firstly, one must have absolute trust in God so as to seek His blessings and to have
a problem-free life. Knowledge and guidance can be had from a Guru who would be able
to teach the right path towards prayer or worship daily. Normally a person, only when some
problem appears is tempted to turn towards the God to seek HIS relief. Hindu Scriptures
clearly explain the need for worship and prayer wholeheartedly following the right path
so as to get the blessings of the Supreme Power.

Naivedyam puradhonyasyam saksusha parikruhyate
rasanbhaktasya jihvakre asnami kamalodhbhava
yathadakni muke punkte tatabimbhameke harih

When the Naivedyam is placed before the deity either in temples or in houses,
the Supreme Power accepts through His eyes. He tastes the food from the tongues
of Devotees or Bhaktas. The Supreme Power accepts the offered Naivedyam similar
to the acceptance as Havya through Agni or Homam.

Patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty upahrtam asnami prayatatmanah

Lord Krishna says : If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit
or water, I will accept it.

One can sing His glories, chant His Mantras, rendering service to the Supreme
Power either in the Temple or in Satsangs, daily worshiping, prostrating before Him
daily with sincerity and offering Neivedyam daily. If one does all these things daily
with love and affection towards the Supreme Power on the lines suggested in our
Scriptures, one can certainly attain the bliss of the Supreme Power.

One must work sincerely with great patience, persistence and diligence upon his heart and mind
to accomplish the Divine Image and His glory. As one proceeds, detaching oneself day by day
from the inward selfishness towards the Divine Love which is selfless will gradually make a person
to be nearer to the Supreme Power. Any service towards the Divine Power must be spontaneous,
with wholehearted and unconditional one and not expecting anything in return. Divine qualities
of selfless service and love towards the Divine Power are to be acquired by everyone to attain
the bliss of the Supreme Power.

Devotion to God is not to be calculated on the basis of the institutions one has started or helped, the temples one has built or renovated, the donations one has given, nor does it depend on the number of times one has written or recited the Names of the Lord, or the time and energy one spent in the worship of Lord. These are not vital - they are not even secondary! Devotion is Divine Love, unsullied by any tinge of desire for the benefit that flows from it or the fruit or consequence of that love. Love knows no particular reason for its manifestation. Divine Love is akin to the love of the river for the sea, the creeper for the tree, the spring for the cliff down which it flows. It is an unchanging loving attitude, a desirable bent of the mind, standing steady through joy and grief, ever sweet - in good times and bad!

- Divine Discourse, 25 Feb 1964.

Devotion towards the Supreme Power can be in any form just like the creeper searching
a tree nearby or a river moving towards the Sea. Meditation is one such form, just like
prayer, worship, Namasangeerthan, etc. Meditation is an exercise which can enlighten the
mind and it can exercise control over the mind. In the process one can attain sustained
peace of mind. Physically, it enables to bring down or control one's blood pressure facilitating
overall health improvement. Above all it also helps to understand one’s own mind. Once a
person attains a better understanding, he/she can work together as a team without any ego.
The outcome will also be appreciable as the work is done by sharing the views of everyone
in the team. Basically, it brings down the tension and no overload is felt. It paves to
self realization as the concept is shared by everyone. Further meditation exercise makes it
easier to understand the team members who are associated.

Never once in the Mahabharatha did Dhuryodhana observe the principles of righteousness towards the Pandava brothers; at last, he had to face the inevitable doom, when Bheema challenged him for the duel which was to lay him low. At that moment, Dhuryodhana, the author of the deceitful gambling game, the house of lac which was set on fire, the insult heaped on the honoured Queen, the slaughterer of Abhimanyu by a pack of ferocious foes who fell upon him - the dark designer of all these iniquities, took refuge in Dharma and started quoting texts. Dharma is not a handy excuse to escape the evil consequences of one’s actions. Righteousness is not to be treated as a means of escape; it is a means of living.

- Divine Discourse, 25 Feb 1964.

Our ancient scriptures have clearly explained about the practice of dharma. It clearly explains
the righteous path to lead one's life observing certain codes of conduct. The basic object of
of dharma enables union of soul with the supreme reality. Normally, we call it Nyayam. One
has to rigidly follow the values of life in any given circumstance whatever may be the situation.
One should try to be pious, observe spiritual activities and try to be helpful to other living beings,
if possible one can give charity to needy individuals. One can reach God through dharmic activities
without hindering anyone. One has to have purity of mind, compassion towards others, and try
to observe truthfulness and keep away from any adharmic or unrighteous activities. One should
not have anger, jealousy, etc. If one follows spiritual activities, dharmic path can easily be
observed.

God is Supreme Energy (Mahashakthi) and the individual is Deluding Power (Mayashakthi). In this impermanent and ever transforming world, God is the only permanent and fixed entity. In order to realize Him, who is eternal and true, one has no option but to attach oneself to that Source and Sustenance, and offer Him loving devotion and dedicated service. This path is the destiny of one and all, irrespective of age, scholarship, caste, creed, gender or status. When walking along the road, you can watch your shadow, falling on mud, dirt, thorn, sand, wet or dry patches of land. Has anyone ever worried or is affected by the fate of their shadow? No! Everyone knows that the experience of shadow is not eternal and real. So too, you are but the shadow of the Absolute. Internalize this truth – this is the only remedy for all sorrow, travail and pain.

- Divine Discourse, Aug 1, 1956.

Pleasure is generally enjoyed by everyone as sweets while pain is felt like bitter gourd.
Normally some people enjoy certain pleasures for e.g. intellectual pleasures like reading a novel
than sensual pleasures i.e. eating a tasty sumptuous meal. Sometimes, consequence of every
action becomes tedious, time-consuming, and also becomes impossible. Some people prefer
bodily pleasures than mental pleasures like reading scriptures and chanting mantras, etc.
One should prefer pleasures of long-term of effect like spiritual practices than just seeking
bodily pleasures. As we all know that the Karma refers to the deeds performed by a person
in the earlier generations, which generally decides the destiny of a person. In other words
karma and destiny are inter-related. Karma also defines character and personality of a person.
Karmas only make a person noble and good. According to our scriptures, the Supreme Power
for e.g. Lord Chitra Gupta, maintains an account of our karmas and one gets the outcome based on
that.
