When a person is overwhelmed by the dark clouds of despair and the raging confusion of irrepressible desires, he too, has a compass which will point to him the direction he has to take. That compass is a society that is dedicated to the propagation of spiritual discipline. So long as man is attracted by outer nature, he cannot escape the blows of joy and grief, of profit and loss, of happiness and misery. The greatest defect today is the absence of Self-Inquiry (Aathma Vichara), which is the root cause of all restlessness. If you are eager to know the truth about yourself, then you will never go astray. All pots are made of mud, all ornaments of gold, and all clothes are of yarn. Here, even though you see so much diversity, there is a unity. The basic substance of everyone is the Supreme Self (Brahman). It is your basis too! Just as a river’s flow is regulated by the bunds, and flood waters are directed to the sea, so too the Upanishads regulate and restrict the senses, mind and intellect, to help you reach the Divine and merge the individual in the Absolute. Scanning a map or a guide book will not give you even a fraction of joy of the actual visit! Scriptures are only maps and guidebooks. Act in accordance and experience bliss.

Normally we find people having physical or emotional dis-harmonies, perhaps owing to
bad thoughts or deeds. Suppose if a person finds uneasy, one has to attempt to understand
himself/herself through self realization. Self realization leads to the extent to which one
has inner peace and mental control enabling him/her to be happy under all situations. The
will power controls the mind enabling one to dedicate oneself towards divine activity, if one
is determined to pursue the spiritual aspects. Some have the mental restrictions/frame such as
this can be done or cannot be done. If a person is born in a family with certain characteristics
and habits, normally, he/she is influenced by the environment and the brought up nature
making him/her to pursue certain things in a positive or negative way. Some say at home,
one should not eat this or that or make the children the ignorant of not understanding things
by repeating certain examples without allowing the children to think of their own. In such cases,
one needs a guidance to have the mental power to accomplish the things that one desires or
aspires. To achieve a positive result, one has to have determination and concentration.
We notice people in the higher echelon are men of concentration, dedication with the
will power to execute the deeds. One need not have to spend more time doing meditation in a day.
One may spend at least 15 to 20 minutes a day will bring peace of mind and facilitate the way
for self realization. Once this is done, consciousness gradually widens and it paves way to identify
one's necessity to search for the divine power and reality of the Universe.

When on a pilgrimage, without adequate mental preparation, you may not be able to receive the Grace of God! During pilgrimage, do not act like a postal parcel, which moves from place to place, collecting impressions on the outer wrapper, but not on the core being. Your purpose for a pilgrimage is to strengthen your spiritual inclinations and let the holiness of the place settle in your mind. As a result, your habits must change for the better and your outlook must widen. Your inward vision must become deeper and steadier. You must realize the Omnipresence of God and the oneness of Humanity. You must learn tolerance, patience, charity and service. After the pilgrimage is over, sitting in your own home and ruminating over your experiences you must determine to seek. Aspire to get higher, richer and more real experience of God realization.

Winning love through love is the vital aspect of devotion. - Baba

As Baba says, pilgrimage has to be useful one and not to be treated as a pleasure trip.
In fact, the word pilgrimage means an inclination of sentimental to attain mental and
spiritual familiarity with whole hearted practical attention in an effective way to distinguish
and establish a mental and hearty involvement with the pilgrimage. Pilgrimage has its
own ideological beliefs as could be seen from our spiritual books and if undertaken
it plays a major role to strengthen the base of ideological beliefs. Everyone undertakes
only at the age of 60 or so with an eager to visit various pilgrimage centers and some starts
comparison with the books that they have gone through over the years about the
effects and benefits of pilgrimage as a method of self-education or self-evaluation.
However, the ultimate purpose of worships in various temples and taking dip in holy
rivers viz. Ganges, Godavari, Yamuna, Triveni, etc. is only towards self-purification
and to cleanse the soul from the sins, if any. Generally people enjoy the pilgrimage
trips owing to the environment of the places visited and variety of food that they
avail while on a long trip but only a few enjoy the actual benefits of pilgrimage having
an opportunity to be present in the sanctum of the ancient temples at far off
places.

I was in Madras on the 12th December, 1965. On the morning of the 13th, I had His Darshan and Bhagawan graciously anointed my forehead with the Vibhuti. I did not realise then that in a gathering of over 1000 devotees, I was the first to be blessed.
That same night, I attended His public lecture, where 20,000 sat in perfect silence. I was seated only a few yards from the platform. Bhagawan was showing me the crown of His head, a few times. What was it for? I saw on the top of the thick cluster of hair on His head, a flickering a Golden Light. It was the Kundalini Shakti, raised over the Brahma-randra, a sight I was pining to see, all my life.
I wanted confirmation of my conjecture. Bhagawan, knowing my yearning, asked Major Rayaningar to invite me also for the dinner on the 14th at his place. Bhagawan was there for over three hours and I got an opportunity to ask Him about that Golden Flame. He assured me that it was no illusion of mine! He had only fulfilled my desire.
He warned me that it is not the goal of life, which is still higher. There is a great distance yet, for a Yogi to cover, before he attains the Goal. He said, "Unfortunately all sastras and saints described that the rousing of the Kundalini to Sahasrara Chakra as Nirvikalpa Samadhi." He told me that it is not correct, even as He said as recorded in the Srimad Bhagavatam, that the Yajnas or the Vedas do not take man to the ultimate Goal of Life.
Baba has told us in His discourses that man cannot ordinarily live for more than 21 days, after such an experience, because food also appears as God and is in reality God, to him. It is impossible for such a one to eat and drink. Therefore, the body perishes.
Bhagawan insists that the Yogic experience of Oneness in the Turiya (and Turiyathitha) plane is not enough. The Jnani who has attained Nirvikalpa Samadhi must literally see and feel God everywhere and in all things in the physical plane also, all the time. To such a one, the planes are not watertight compartments.

When we render service to our parents, wife/husband or children or to the Society,
we derive happiness and satisfaction. Similarly, if one engages oneself with dedication
and sincerity in doing prayer to the Lord, one will attain spiritually happiness. One can
attain a peaceful life if one has a peaceful and spiritual surroundings like Satsangh.
Worship and prayer alone with dedication can lead one to the door of entrance into the
heart of God. We find generally people living with some sort of sufferings, troubles, etc
during the whole life. Some just spend the life with confusions and questions in their
mind about their future life. Some may look outwardly happy but to the heart of heart
they may not be. Some live in poverty since birth and the entire family members may be
struggling for one time food. Such people all they need sufficient food and facilities
to lead a happy and peaceful life. If such people need peaceful environment, there is
no other alternative but to seek the blessings of Supreme Power by means of dedicated
prayer. If one does sincere prayer, can obtain the peaceful environment. Such people
need to have absolute belief and faith in the Supreme Power. The Supreme Power
will certainly transform the life of such people. Prayer is not be done on a casual basis
and one has to be conscious and serious enough in their practices to attain the divine power.

You are all pilgrims, moving along this land of action (Karmakshethra) to the goal - the land of righteousness (Dharmakshethra). The literary men, the poets and teachers who address you are all guides who help you along; but, the road has to be trodden by you, every inch of it. “Kavim Puranaam Anusaasitharam” - scriptures declare that a kavi (a poet or the learned one) places the rules of right conduct before people and warns them when they go astray. These individuals should also be very careful that they themselves do not stray, while professing the right path. The learned are those that have a noble vision, whose role is to interpret God for the benefit of one and all. They should not indulge in meaningless talk or writing about less significant topics.

Every one should select a proper Guru to guide. If the disciple stay away from the truth,
what the Guru imparts , then the true guidance possessing of good characteristics other than
those on the right path guided by him bring adversities which can affect the devotee. Sometimes,
the unchecked greed is the most evil practice together with eagerness to be superior to others
bring in lot of adversities in life. One should not be arrogant and try to think of himself/herself
to attain perfection above all other things in life. Sometimes, one may take a guidance from
a facilitator too but then he is only a neutral mediator and could not occupy the place of
a Guru. The facilitator in a Satsangh would only provide information and accommodate the
exchange of dialogue towards spiritual activities. Perfection has to be towards self-realisation.
Perfection cannot be taken just like that one attains absolute sense of divine guidance.
One may find divine guidance in various books or magazines and also taught by different
agencies. But it all depends on the devotees to assess the actualities and he/she is free to
choose the right or wrong path. But then wrong path leads to making mistakes. He/She
must choose only what is good for him/her. One should analyse and should not choose
what is harmful to him/her. He/She should not feel that he/she enjoys the freedom of choice
and if some selects a wrong path has to ultimately pay the price for the wrong ones. One
should not indulge in meaningless talks as Baba says.

Many live in a dream state looking for many things in life in a routine manner. It may not be
very easy to forget ourselves or about the past but one should not be spiritually absent while
physically present in this world. Our lives can go on even without us and the relatives are not
going to bother when we are no more. Just like Brooks. But meditation and prayer help us
in the long way to rejuvenate the life that the Supreme Power has sanctioned us. There are
many ways to lead a life rather than without an aim or goal. One has to prepare oneself
to get ready for a duration of at least a minimum of 15 minutes of silence and stillness without
any movement sitting in a pooja room concentrating on the Supreme Power. One can make
oneself comfortable in a position so that one does not get disturbed from concentration.
Yoga is mainly meant for physical exercise to get the body ready for prayer and meditation.
It is very useful to enable a person to sit in a position in which one's spine is upright. One
has to practice a position until a person finds comfortable and relaxed. Meditation and Prayer
alone can bring solace to a person in life. Therefore as Baba says, just like cycle learning,
one has to concentrate on the Supreme Power and try to do a dedicated prayer and worship
so as to attain HIS bliss.

You push the cycle along to a safe and open ground, hop and skip, leaning now and then on one side and another, and make many an attempt to get the balance. Once you get the skill, you never even think or worry about balancing. You automatically make the necessary adjustments. You can now ride through narrow streets and lanes, and even through crowded alleys – you no longer need the large, safe, open ground! Bhajans can be taught to the children, so that now on they are directed in the right path.
Otherwise, one can buy CDs and play it at home, so that the children can listen and learn
simple bhajans on different deities. If one goes through the spiritual books, one can find
that opinion of spiritual leaders that in the present age of Kaliyuga, Namasankeertanam or
the bhajana sampradaya tradition is one of the easiest and most enjoyable paths to reach
the Supreme Power. There are many bhajans sung by prominent musicians and others.
If one goes through regularly, it would be simple and easy to follow. People who know
music can utilize the opportunity to repeat that on the same lines and attain perfection.
This could be one of the methods to control the mind and lead it in the direct direction towards
the Supreme Power.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR SELFLESS SERVICE

Pure Heart

430597_267301426737826_639493933_n.jpg

When you go into the qualifications needed for service, you will know that pure heart uncontaminated by conceit, greed , envy , hatred , or competition ‑ is essential, also faith in God, as the spring of vitality, virtue, and justice. Service is the worship you offer to the God in the heart of everyone. Do not ask for another which state he belongs to or which caste or creed he professes.

See your favourite form of God in that other person; as a matter of fact he is not" other" at all. It is His image, as much as are you are. You arc not helping some "one individual": you are adoring Me , in him. I am before you in that form; so what room is there for the ego in you to raise its hood ?

Duty is God ; Work is worship. Even the tiniest work is a flower placed at the Feet of God. Approach the pilgrims who come here for the festival with a heart filled with the treasure of love.

You desire to exist for ever; you enjoy life and avoid all talk of your own death. That is enough evidence to conclude that you are Reality in essence (Sath-swarupa). Then, again, you are filled with wonder and curiosity and a desire to know the world around you. You ask continuously what, why, how and when, about all and sundry. This is the prompting that is given by the Consciousness (Chith). Lastly, you are always seeking joy and try to avoid grief. It is your nature to do so, for you are essentially Bliss. When someone asks you, "How do you do?" and you answer, "Quite well, thank you," they do not stop to enquire why you are well. Baba's Quote "When someone asks you, "How do you do?" and you answer, "Quite well, thank you,"
they do not stop to en-quire why you are well. It is only when you answer that you are ill, you are further
questioned anxiously. "Wellness" is natural; "illness" unnatural. Anxiety is caused only by the unnatural.
So, in essence you are happiness"

The above statement makes everyone to think for quite sometime as Baba has put the right and exact thing,
as to what is happening in our present day world. Meditation, if we are able to spare some time and
a proper place to practice, it can certainly guide us to take a shelter in training the mind and facilitating
us to remember about the exact thing towards the spiritual path to understand the truth in good spirit i.e.
how to participate or engage oneself with one's inner life; dedicating absolutely towards wise deeds,
strictly and rigidly following the ethical behavior by overcoming unpleasant emotions and understand what is reality.
Once one reaches that state, one can easily understand the hidden things in life, besides shortcoming and
fears, if any. One has to do hard work to find a resolution. If a person is able to master the meditation, one can
face any type of situations and may be able confront one's own weaknesses.

KARMA

601571_267290606738908_1507416126_n.jpg

One of the VIP s hailing from MP had come to Kodai to seek Swami's blessings. Swami blessed him during darshan and as a bonus invited him inside Sai Sruti - (Swami's residence in Kodai) for lunch.

During the lunch, this gentleman asked a question, "Swami, if I perform one bad (sinful) act, can it be nullified with one good act of ours?"

Swami replied him with an example, "if you sow two seeds, one lemon seed and another mango seed then what will you get? You will get a lemon tree in place of lemon seed and a mango tree where a mango seed was sown."
Moral: Positive consequences for good and negative consequences for Bad actions (Karmas). No square offs entertained. (And 'All are one and be alike to everyone' is followed by the Super accountant)

Accounting and settlement of individual accounts is God's most passionate profession since inception. That's on Top of His agenda when He descends down on earth and He does it meticulously. No compromise.

But, while adhering to strict accounting principles He also shows mercy too. Lemons received out of lemon trees (as a result of bad karmas) turn into a Lemonade.sweetened by His Mercy and Grace :) Lemons too are good for health :)

SAIRAM

God keeps track of our Karmas and maintains everyone's personal accounts.

See that the even flow of thoughts towards the Lord is not interrupted. Do not allow the mind to go beyond the twin bunds - the Name on one side and Form on the other! Thus you can easily tame your mind.

Concentration is very important and scattering of thoughts and lack of focus will not bring the
desired results and rather leads to stressful life. One has to have a firm determination before
doing practice meditation. Meditation facilitates to soften the mind and keeps away from all
anxiety-producing thoughts besides permitting the mind to rest peacefully. A peaceful mind
paves way to get cleared from worries and does not allow any sort of stress. Everyone in
a day have some moments of tension and stress these days owing to either family situation or
due to professional/work activities. In such cases the mind gets scattered. During such
occasions, one is unable to remove or get out of the stress so as to gain a situation to move
forward. On such situations, mind body integration is absolutely essential. The intensity of
the tension or the stress that causes to the mind can be easily noticed on the faces of those
people who are restless. In such cases, one has to adopt a simple and powerful meditation
exercises to create a peace of mind which will be a silent watcher of one's activities.

Initially, it may look strange for a person to start practicing meditation. However, this
needs complete attention to the self and it slowly becomes a routine nature. One has
to be patient and do not get discouraged if one is not able to gain control over the mind
and should not get distracted. Though it is quite natural initially, one has to develop the
ability to keep a mental track of the wavering mind without getting distracted from daily
activities of meditation. Once a person is firm and is able to do it continuously, one can attain easily
self awareness, personal growth, complete relief from stress, clarity in thinking besides
sustained peace of mind.

IMPORTANCE OF HUMAN BIRTH

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba has said:

"A human birth is the most sacred one among the 84 lakhs (840,000) of different living beings in this creation. To attain such a sacred birth is a great fortune, indeed."

"The traditional number of created beings is 84 lakhs, and man is the final item of the evolutionary procession; but, why did the number stop at 84 lakhs? It stopped because man is the zenith, the fullness; he is Maadhava in fact, though he has ignored the truth and holds fast to the belief that he is just a man. He is endowed with manas, buddhi, chiththa and ahamkaara (mind, intelligence, reasoning fac lty and ego), all four, in an integrated personality, whereas the birds and beasts and all other species have mostly ahamkaaram (ego) alone. The lives of the later are centered round the aham and its desires and demands. But, man has the capacity to follow sathya, dharma, shaanthi and prema; man alone has it. If he does not evince that capacity and develop it, he is as bad as a vaanara or a daanava (ape or ogre). When man was created, there remained nothing higher to create."

"Having taken birth thousand and thousand of cores of times, as a result of the accumulated merits, at some time the being gets the human birth. Having obtained the human birth which is difficult to get and which is like a step to Liberation who is more sinful than him who does not uplift himself."

"Man is the most sacred of all the animals. To be born as a man is an extraordinary gift. Therefore, man must use this life of his in a purposeful manner. The disciples of Sankara (Lord Shiva) have pointed out that man remains in a miserable state in the womb of the mother during this cycle of birth and death. He gets some relief from such suffering after his birth. Therefore, he must make life a sacred one."

"Man alone has the chance to liberate himself from the wheel of birth and death, through the pleasant means of serving God. But as a result of ignorance, or what is worse, perversity, he lets the opportunity slip from his hands, and suffers grief and pain, fear and anxiety, ad infinitum."

Importance of Human Birth

In this wonderful universe, God has created billions (84 lacs according to Hindu sastra calculation) of creatures or beings (including Gods, demigods, insects, beasts and men) inhabiting heaven, hell, earth, ocean, sky and other intermediate regions. Of these, those creatures or souls, whose merits preponderate, go to heaven and live there till they enjoy the fruits of their actions, and when this is done, they are cast down while those souls, whose sins or demerits preponderate, go down to hell, and suffer the consequences of their misdeeds for so long a time as they deserve. When their merits and demerits balance each other, they are born on earth as human beings, and are given a chance to work out their salvation. Ultimately when their merits and demerits both drop down (are got rid of) completely, they get their deliverance and become free. To put the matter in a nutshell, souls get their births or transmigration according to their deeds and intelligence (development of their minds).

Special Value of the Human Body

As we all know, four things are common to all the creatures, viz. food, sleep, fear and sexual union. In the case of man, he is endowed with a special faculty, viz. knowledge, with the help of which he can attain God-vision, which is impossible in any other birth. It is for this reasons that Gods envy man's fortune and aspire to be born as men on earth, so as to get their final deliverance.

Some say, that there is nothing worse than the human body, which is full of filth, mucus, phlegm and dirt, and which is subject to decay, disease and death. This is no doubt true to a certain extent; but in spite of these drawbacks and defects, the special value of the human body is - that man has got the capacity to acquire knowledge: it is only due to the human knowledge that one can think of the perishable and transitory nature of the body itself, and of the world and get a disgust for the sense-enjoyments and can discriminate between the unreal and the real, and thus attain God-vision. So, if we reject or neglect the body because it is filthy, we lose the chance of God-vision, and if we fondle it, and run after sense - enjoyments, because it is precious, we go to hell. The proper course, therefore, for us to pursue is the following; that the body should neither be neglected nor fondled, but should be properly cared for, just as a traveler on horse-back takes care of his pony on the way till he reaches his destination and returns home. Thus the body should ever be used or engaged to attain God-vision or self-realization, which is the supreme end of life.

It is said that though God created various sorts of creatures he was not satisfied, for none of them was able to know and appreciate His work. So he had to create a special being - Man, and endow him with a special faculty, viz. Knowledge and when He saw that man was able to appreciate His Leela - marvelous work and intelligence. He was highly pleased and satisfied. So really it is good luck to get a human body, better luck to get birth in a Brahmin family, and best one, to get an opportunity of having recourse to Sai Baba's Feet and surrendering to Him.

Man's Endeavor

Realizing how precious the human life is, and knowing that Death is certain and may snatch us at any time, we should be ever alert to achieve the object of our life, we should not make the least delay but make every possible haste to gain our object, just as a widower is most anxious to get himself married to a new bride, or just as a king leaves no stone unturned to seek his lost son. So with all earnestness and speed, we should strive to attain our end, i.e., self-realization. Casting aside sloth and laziness, warding off drowsiness, we should day and night meditate on the Self. If we fail to do this, we reduce ourselves to the level of beasts.

How to Proceed?

The most effective and speedy way to gain our object is to approach a worthy Saint or Sage - Sadguru, who has himself attained God-vision. What cannot be achieved by hearing religious lectures and study of religious works, is easily obtained in the company of such worthy souls. Just as the sun alone gives light, which all the stars put together cannot do, so the Sad-Guru alone imparts spiritual wisdom which all the sacred books and sermons cannot infuse. His movements and simple talks give us 'silent' advice. The virtues of forgiveness, calmness, disinterestedness, charity, benevolence, control of mind and body, egolessness etc. are observed by the disciples as they are being practiced in such pure and holy company. This enlightens their minds and lifts them up spiritually. Sai Baba was such a Sage or Sad-Guru. Though He acted as a Fakir (mendicant), He was always engrossed in the Self. He always loved all beings in whom He saw God or Divinity. By pleasures He was not elated. He was not depressed by misfortunes. A king and a pauper were the same to Him. He, whose glance would turn a beggar into a king, used to beg His food from door to door in Shirdi, and let us now see how He did it.

You must be humble, yet strong to resist temptation. Do not yield like cowards to the sly insinuations of the senses. Do not spend all your time in the task of collecting information and acquiring skills that will give you an income on which you can live. It must also be used to acquire the art of being content and calm, collected and courageous. Also cultivate an ardent thirst for knowing the truth of the world and of your own self. Your words must be like honey. Your hearts must be as soft as butter. Your outlook must be like the lamp, illumining, not confusing. Be like the referee on the football field, watching the game, judging the play according to the rules laid down, unaffected by success or failure of this team or that.
