Keep your faith in the Lord undiminished. You can then safely move about in the world and no harm will come to you. When one loses one’s way and strays into the wilderness, believing in the world, then the Avatars come to warn and guide. Your attitude must be like the village women, who carry pots of water in their heads, one over the other and keeping their balances even when talking and walking along a winding lane. They do not forget or ignore the burden or their goal and destination. They are always vigilant, conscious of the hardships on the way – the stones and the pits. It is the inner concentration that will pay you rich dividends!

As Baba quotes about a lady carrying a number of pots on her head with full of water to her destination
without loosing concentration and not forgetting the need for the safety of water while walking on the
roads which have many potholes and obstructions. Similarly, one has to have complete faith in the
Supreme Power irrespective of the hurdles or problems that one may face during the life to reach the
destination of Divine Power. No doubt faith results in His grace but it is not a matter of blind faith.
It has to have a demonstrable effect as the lady carrying pots of water. If a person is a regular devotee
and has spiritual empowerment then one can certainly attain a demonstrable result. To be precise faith
means the practical understanding or trusting the Divine Power, no matter what is happening around us.
A sign of Supreme Power's love is HIS blessings in times of need if we have absolute faith in HIM.

How Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavantu” became “Samastha Lokaha Sukhino Bhavantu ?

“Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavantu”

This was the line that used to be chanted thrice everyday, after every prayer session at Prasanthi Nilayam, in Puttaparthi. One fine day, in September 2008, Swami (Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba) called one of the lead-singing students and told him to change the chant. That day onwards, the chant was changed to

“Samastha Lokaha Sukhino Bhavantu”

I am sure that the Martians, Neptunians and Saturnians, if they exist, would have rejoiced at this change! :)
Simply because, the prayer now had changed from one of a global nature into one of a universal nature.

The former means, "Let all the people in the world be happy" (since Lokah has two meanings in Sanskrit, one: people; and the other: world). The latter means “Let all the worlds be happy,” (and thereby all the beings in the worlds). The earlier mantra referred only to this world. The new mantra refers to all the worlds and is broader in outlook.

But wait! It is not as if only the ‘universal’ beings had to rejoice. We ‘earthlings’ too could rejoice because blessings on us would have definitely doubled!

It was the 9th of July, 1999.

Do not be carried away by the cynicism of critics – that should serve only to encourage you. Examine the faults that may lie dormant in you and work sincerely to get rid of them. Do not merely give platform speeches on the excellence of qualities such as charity, service, sympathy, equality, secularism, etc. Descend from the platform and practise at least a few ideals sincerely. When your neighbour is in the throes of a serious illness, do not rest content with the idea that you are happily free. You are not free if even one is suffering or bound. Remember that the food you give to each living being reaches the Supreme Divine Himself, the service you do to any being, anywhere in the globe, fills the Lord with joy.

If someone judges himself/herself, then only one is known as real judge in place of looking for
others' faults, etc. Everyone has examine his/her own mind. Some do not know even how to speak
because they they are engrossed with anger, jealousy and false pride, i.e. all evil passions, which are
the faults of false ego-sense. Some do not know the difference between good and bad. Majority of
the people do not want to know themselves but want to know everything about others without knowing
their problems. Some want to find faults in others. While a few want others to forgive and forget
one's demerits, but do not want to forgive and forget others mistakes. This is all because of false ego-sense.
One has to exercise control over the mind, speech and actions. Try to speak the truth and find out the
problems of neighbours too by disciplining the senses. One try to avoid selfish desire to a certain extent.
One has to have intense faith in the Supreme Power and in our scriptures. One has to develop
humility, patience and the spirit of service with sincerity. Bhagawan is close to everyone. There is a
quote that one has to chant HIS nama regularly just like a leech to attain HIS blessings. One has to
worship or pray to the Supreme Power for the purity of mind, attachment towards HIM and
wisdom. One can choose the prayer in any form one likes to attain HIS blessings and also do service
to others in any form one desires within one's means and facility.

Everyone must make their exit someday - that moment should not be one of anguish; one must depart with a smile and a bow. In order to accomplish that, a lot of preparation is necessary. Leaving all that has been accomplished and accumulated during a long lifetime is a very hard task. So prepare for it from now, by discarding attachment to one thing after another. You see many things in your dreams, and you may even acquire power and position. When you awaken, you do not cry over the loss of those, even though they were very real and gave you real joy and satisfaction during your dream. You tell yourself, “It was just a dream” and move on with life! What prevents you from treating with similar nonchalance, all the possessions you gather during the waking state? Cultivate that attitude and depart with a smile, when the curtain is drawn!

In connection with a job search, I once met an elderly and well educated person. I showed him a copy of a book that I wrote. He looked at the second page where it was noted that the book was dedicated to "Bhagawan, Amma and Nana". He asked me who the "Bhagawan" was. I have stated that the Bhagawan is Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The scholar quickly and unhesitatingly remarked that Baba might be a great saint, but certainly not Bhagawan (God). After a while I collected the copy of my book and left the company of the scholar.
I left the scholar, but, I could not leave my thoughts. The scholar's remark was all the time in my mind. Apparently his contention was that Swami could not be God. A response came to my mind. He who can say that Swami is not God must have to prove that he has known God. Suppose I see a metal and say that it is not gold, it is implied that I know gold. Similarly if some one says that Swami is not God, then it is implicit that he can recognize God. Indeed, the individual ought to be knowing God thoroughly well, otherwise, he can not distinguish God from others who are not. So, I have decided that if some one says that my Swami is not God, I will simply ask him: "How do you know?"
Frankly, the fact that I have discovered that question has pleased me for a while only. After all just as I can ask: "How do you know Swami is not God?" I may be easily subjected to the counter question "How do you know He is God?" Naturally it is very desirable to know the answer to this question rather than to learn to raise the previous one.
Until I progress in my sadhana and become closer and closer to Him so that I can see Him in absolute unmanifest as well as relatively manifest Swami, I can not really know the answer to the question: "How do you know Swami is God?" But, though it is not needed to begin my sadhana, simply to enjoy the bliss that Swami gives me, I ought to have some answer, more down to earth of course, to the said question. Also it is not palatable to my ego to evade the answer to the question by saying that sadhana alone will give the answer (though this is the true answer). Hence I came to a conclusion. Until one can identify through sadhana the manifestation of The Absolute in the form of Swami, one needs some transient working proof to cultivate the faith that Swami is God, and to be guided by this faith on the path of sadhana. Most Sai devotees, I believe, have used the following characteristics of Swami as the proof of His divinity and to say that He is God.
The Supernatural phenomena associated with Him (only God can do them).
His emphasis on all religions (only one absolute God or His real manifestation can emphasize this.)
His pure love (He gives and gives and forgives, never asking anything in return except love. One has to shed a thousand tears and beg Him to accept even a small gift which He does only to please His devotee).
The transformation He brings about in human behaviour (only God can correct people since He does this out of love) etc. etc. etc .......

It is important to recognise why the above characteristics are noticed as the proof that Swami is God. I think it is because none of us wish to consider anything less than the above as characterizing God. This is so because the ego in us does not permit us to see God in everyone and everywhere. We direly need a personal God because we like to be corrected, questioned, patted and loved by someone much higher than the average human beings. For all these reasons we see Swami as God. Clearly this is not the real proof. Real proof can be obtained only through sadhana and only when it can be realized that the absolute has indeed manifested as Swami and also when it is realized that the absolute is also manifest in all creation.
Thanks to Swami, I have learnt one thing. Every time I meet people who say that Swami is not God I have learnt to respect them and not to argue with them. For, what I know is no superior to what they think they know. I cannot prove and they cannot disprove. If my faith gives me joy and bliss, they too get something out of their faith.
For common people like me, the nice distinctions between yogi, saint, sage, incarnation and Absolute God are totally irrelevant. All of them are Divine just as one's mother, father and teacher are. Twameva Sarvam Mama Sai Deva.

Mental training through meditation, worship and prayer, etc are imperative for a person
to attain the true spiritual path. Sound health is a highest gain while contentment in life
is the highest wealth besides trustworthy in the Supreme Power is the highest bliss. One
has to have a control over the mind towards the right effort, right deeds and right
concentration towards the Supreme Power without any wavering of mind. Commitment
towards Spiritual path is absolutely essential focusing the mind towards true spiritual nature
with adequate wisdom. The wise spiritual path is one that allows a person to utilize the
natural talents and skills. One must be able to control one's desires. Biggest challenge
in life is to act on the spiritual path abiding by the religious principles with spiritual awareness.
To achieve the true self-awareness, spiritual practice is one of the methods. Right relationships i.e.
association with the Satsangh brings people together to understand the inner awareness and the
necessity for practice of spiritual activities daily.

It is the Divine that inspires, activates, leads and fulfils the life of every being, however simple or complex it may be! From the atom to the Universe, every single being is flowing fast to merge in the sea of bliss. Never forget that every one of you is Sath-Chith-Ananda Swarupa(Embodiments of Existence-Consciousness-Bliss) – only you are unaware of it and imagine yourself to be bound to this form and its limitations! This is the myth that should be exploded, so that your Divine Life may begin. Leading a Divine Life consists of practising Truth, Love and Non-injury (Sathya, Prema and Ahimsa). Since all are parts of the same Divine Self, all should be loved as oneself, without fear and falsehood. When all are one, why should we injure another one, who is part of the same Divine Being?

As I was indisposed, I couldn't see it yesterday. Thank you very much for the input. I shall do so.

Some require special attention. Guru only recognizes the needs of the Shishya to make him/her
eligible, intelligent, to gain wisdom, etc to perform their best. Guru is required to impart
true spiritual education to those who seek the light of knowledge for a better path to attain
the divine power. He is one who will guide us in our lives. If one selects a proper Guru, he
will not allow us to stay behind. A Guru is not only a Guide but he is also a teacher to us.
In the
absence of a proper Guru, as Baba says, one should pray to the God to show the way
so that one can certainly get the true path in the right direction.

A real Guru with the Divine Power preaches all the Mantras to the disciple, for the Sadhana
to be performed with necessary guidance at frequent intervals. Therefore, a Guru has
to be a person of caliber of divine consciousness. Such Gurus can easily transform the
Sishyas even by a mere glance. For e.g. Sri Aurobindo and Sri Ramana Maharshi. As regards
the discipline, he/she should have respectful obedience and faultless humility, which can
bring wonders in the life of Sishya. Generally problems arise in one's life owing to wrong
thoughts, words and action. Sometimes these shape the destinies of a person. Thoughts are
the source, words and actions are the results such thoughts. Therefore, one has to pursue the
right goals in the right direction and proceed ahead. There are many methods taught to us
through our puranas and ithihasas to attain the divinity which can be practiced.

The world is building itself upon the sandy foundation of the sensory world. Like the monkey which could not pull its hand out of the narrow necked pot, because it first held in its grasp a handful of groundnuts which the pot contained, people are suffering today. They are unwilling to release their hold on the handful of pleasurable things they have grasped from the world. When people do not place faith in the Self, but pursue their senses alone, the danger signal is up! People are stuck with the wrong belief that the accumulation of material possessions will endow them with joy and peace. Divine Love alone can give you everlasting joy. Divine Love alone will remove anger, envy and hatred.

Generally attitudes of the people are only towards acquiring wealth and the use of material assets
which becomes their priorities. But accumulation of wealth can only lead to unnecessary pride
and inequality in the society. Accumulation of wealth may lead to misconduct and misuse of
one's energy sometimes resulting in immoral exploitation of wealth and dishonesty, etc. Greediness
towards acquiring wealth may be harmful in the long run and makes a person to indulge and
to commit sins. A person loses fairness, justice, mercy, and social responsibility amongst the
society. Furthermore, improper behavior will rise up. Whereas Divine love makes a person
to do a commitment, to live together in a Satsang, to help the needy and downtrodden
and also to make the loved ones smile, to make them feel secured, not to be jealous, not to make mistakes,
etc. and above all create a virtue of forgiving hateredness.

Every struggle to realize the Unity behind all the multiplicity is a step on the path of Divine Life. You have to churn the milk if you wish to separate and identify the butter that is present within it. So too, carry on with life and purify your thoughts and action in order to get unshakeable faith. Divine Life does not admit the slightest dross in character or delusion in the intellect. People dedicated to divine life must emphasize this by precept and practice. Wipe out the root cause of anxiety, fear and ignorance, if any, within you. Then your true personality will shine forth. Anxiety is removed by faith in the Lord, the faith that tells you whatever happens is for the best and that the Lord’s will be done. Sorrow springs from egoism, the feeling that you do not deserve to be treated so badly, that you are left helpless. Sorrow disappears when egoism goes!

Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavantu Everyone has certain limitations in life. It is the divine
power that inspires one, activates, however complex it may be. One has to understand that
divine life is the breath of one's survival. Only when one does a false thing, fears come out
of that act. As Baba says, when a person's egoism goes, sorrow disappears. Ignorance
cannot be a cause for committing a mistake. Think of the Supreme Power and keep HIS Nama
in the lips just like Lord Narada and chant it through the breath. One has to have a purity of
mind and straight forward in thinking without any ill feeling or ego. One has to completely eliminate
root causes for any sort of anxiety and fear besides ignorance of divine acts or deeds. One should
not have a wavering mind if one understands the concept of divine power. No one can lead
a peaceful life without HIS blessings. If one has to make the life worth living, Supreme Power's
blessings is inescapable.

You need not even read the Gita or the Upanishads. You will hear a Gita specially designed for you if you call upon the Lord in your own heart. He is there, installed as your own Charioteer. Ask Him and He will answer. Have the Form of the Lord before you when you sit quietly in a place for meditation and have His Name - that is, any Name when you do japam (repetition of the divine Name). If you dojapam, without a Form before you, who is to give the answer? You cannot be talking all the time to yourself. The Form of the Lord you are calling will hear and respond to you. All agitations must cease one day, is it not? Meditation of the Form of the Lord and repetition of His Name are the only means for your mental agitations to cease.
