You need not even read the Gita or the Upanishads. You will hear a Gita specially designed for you if you call upon the Lord in your own heart. He is there, installed as your own Charioteer. Ask Him and He will answer. Have the Form of the Lord before you when you sit quietly in a place for meditation and have His Name - that is, any Name when you do japam (repetition of the divine Name). If you do japam, without a Form before you, who is to give the answer? You cannot be talking all the time to yourself. The Form of the Lord you are calling will hear and respond to you. All agitations must cease one day, is it not? Meditation of the Form of the Lord and repetition of His Name are the only means for your mental agitations to cease.

A person can worship the Supreme Power out of love and not necessarily out of fear
to find a solution to the problems one faces. Our Vedas, Puranas, Ithihasas, etc
describe the glory of the Supreme Power. One can find many Stotras, Slokas,
in praise of the Supreme Power. We all know that the Supreme Power has no specific
attributes of form or shape. It is perceived by the devotees in the form one desires.
Each form has its own significance, just like, Lord Shiva, Lord Narayana, Goddess Durga,
Saraswathi, Mahalakshmi, etc. Normally, the Hinduism supports both form or formless worship.
Our Upanishads clearly explain the existence of Supreme Power. The Supreme Power's glory
can be felt in any form. One can realize the existence of the Supreme Power in any form of
worship. One such method is meditation and nama Japam. One can by disciplined meditation
can certainly attain the knowledge of the formless and attribute-less divine power. One can
through pure worship can certainly feel the presence of the Supreme Power, i.e. the Creator,
Preserver and the Destroyer of this Universe.

Once, I asked a few people as to what they would like to be in the hands of the Lord. Some said the lotus, some the shankha (conch) and some the chakra (discus), but no one mentioned the murali (flute). I would advise you to aspire to become the flute, for then the Lord Himself will come to you and pick you up. Achieve the hollowness of heart by making it completely egoless. He will then breathe through you and create captivating music for all Creation to enjoy. Be straight, without any will of your own and merge your will in the Will of God. Inhale only the breath of God. That is Divine Life, the goal you must all achieve.

Everyone has their own will and it normally becomes selfish. Generally, it is very difficult to
submit one's own will to another's choice unless there is a material benefit. This is what Kali
Yuga. Carrying out one's own will generally leads to selfish acts. Whereas if one submits one's
wills to HIM (Supreme Power), the life will be cheerful because he joins the Satsang. May be
sometimes, it may be difficult to submit one's will to the Supreme Power without any ego.
Unselfish devotion towards the Supreme Power and Service to the Supreme Power can lead
to happiness, peace and contentment in life. One should not be reluctant to submit one's will
towards the Supreme Power. Reluctance is just like disobedience to a Teacher. Some do all
activities to please the teacher whatever he/she says so as to get his/her blessings. Some
even sacrifice their personal desires for the sake of Teacher's blessings, leaving self considerations.
Similarly, one must come forward to surrender one's will towards the Supreme Power too.
For e.g. wife submits to her husband because she loves him. If she does not submit, sometimes,
she becomes unhappy because her husband becomes unpleased. Like that if one surrenders to
the Supreme Power, one can attain more pleasure and all the sufferings will disappear.
Self-surrender unlocks one's ego and produces noble vision towards the Supreme Power
and can enjoy the divine richness. Un-surrendered life always remain just like top portion of the
Himalayan mountain remaining enveloped with the clouds. .

Consider the example of a cinema; on the screen we see rivers in flood, engulfing all the surrounding land. Even though the scene is filled with flood waters the screen does not get wet by even a drop of water. At another time, on the same screen we see volcanoes erupting with flame, but the screen is not burnt. The screen which provides the basis for all these pictures is not affected by any of them. Likewise in the life of man, good or bad, joy or sorrow, birth or death, will be coming and going, but they do not affect the Soul (Atma). In the cinema of life, the screen is the Soul (Atma). It is Shiva, it is Shankara, it is Divinity. When one understands this principle, one will be able to understand, enjoy and find fulfilment in life.

Letter No:1
I am writing to you for His Holiness's Blessings in a dire calamity that has befallen our family. My eldest brother's eldest daughter, aged 38 years, mother of seven children, has got cancer. She has been operated upon by Dr. B. N. B. Rao, Prof. of Surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. The pathological report of the removed tissue shows most virulent type of cancer-aplastic carcinoma. Dr. Ramalingaswami, the renowned Pathologist of the same Institute has himself examined the tissue. This type of carcinoma is most fatal; she has now hardly eight months or so of life. My eldest brother lost his eldest son, a very brilliant boy, when the boy was only 14. His second son is now District Medical Officer, Patna. My Brother has two daughters also, the elder one is the one facing death. Her husband, an Electrical Engineer, has taken long leave and is ready to resign from a very lucrative position to give company to his ailing wife. We have many faults and blemishes, but, yet, I feel, He may take pity on my eldest brother and save the life of his daughter from this virulent type of carcinoma. She is in Surgical special ward, Room No. 367. I pray I may be kindly pardoned for making this prayer. I pray that my prayer at the Holy Feet of Baba will help us to save the life of this girl, the first girl in the next generation of our family. With prayers and with tears...

New Delhi: 20-2-65
I brought the Vibhuti packets from Baba which were sent to me, to Delhi, this morning, by Pathankot and ran to my niece's special ward from Nizamuddin and was able to give her the Prasad. Vibhuti as the first thing in the morning, and a tilak on forehead. By the grace of His Holiness, the temperature which was tormenting her for last ten days, rising with severe rigor up to 106.7 F with unbearable burning sensation and a severe sinking feeling, has disappeared today and all the painful symptoms remained away. What a miracle this alone is! How grateful I feel for the extra-ordinary clemency done on me and on my brother's daughter by the Great Reverend Bhagawan Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Please tender my Sashtanga Pranams to His Holiness...

Letter No. 3
Gwalior: 10-3-65
My niece is now much better. She has got over the anaemia, moves about, and is practically taking normal diet. Further, Cobalt 60, that caused so much of setback is now being taken very satisfactorily. Cancer is most unpredictable, according to medical science, but I am sure she would have a flourishing life with the blessings of Bhagawan Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba. I am leaving next month to take up the appointment of the Head of the Bio-Chemistry Division at Rajendra Memorial Research Institute for Medical Sciences; I am to devote all my abilities to bring about some benefit with the Grace of Bhagawan Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba for suffering mankind....

Letter No. 4
Patna: 23-4-65
My niece is, by the Grace of Bhagawan Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba, doing well. She was to undergo an operation, ovariotomy, as a precautionary measure. But, the Calcutta doctors have dropped the idea, as the same is not warranted. I am very sure, in my mind, that my niece has been saved by the Grace of Bhagawan Sai Baba. She was discharged a month ago and left for Calcutta the same day, with her husband. I offer my heart-felt thanks and Sashtanga Pranams and Dandabat.

Divine Power attracts everyone just like cow going fast towards the green medow,
the honeybee being attracted by the flowers and last but least child crawling towards the
Mother. Where there is divinity, there is an attraction of a power drawing the devotees.
We always notice the existence of divine power in certain pilgrim centres drawing the
devotees having complete faith in the divinity. Spiritualist Gurus are also propagating
through pravachanams about the divinity aspects in various ways. Some may argue
that the Supreme Power has no form while some others mention that the Supreme Power
has an infinite form. Whatever it is, the Supreme Power has a form and it all depends on
the devotees who imagines and assumes the form that is attributed by him/her. We hear
the sound and do not the see the form. Fragrance of a flower attracts a honeybee but
it too has no form. While the water is poured only in a container it makes a form. He is
infinite and all pervasive. Therefore, it is for the devotees to make a form in one's own
mind irrespective of the Supreme Power one likes, whether it be Kula Devatha or Ishta
Devatha.

The most important reason for bondage is giving too much freedom to the mind. For example, when an animal is tethered to a post, it will not be able to go to another place. It will not be able to show anger or violence or do harm to any person. But if it is let loose, then it can roam over various fields, destroy the crops, and cause loss and harm to others. It may also get beaten up for the harm caused by it. So too, if you turn your mind towards worldly objects, it will descend to the animal or even demonic nature. The same mind also can make you rise from the level of the human to the highest level of Divinity. Hence regulate your mind by following certain rules of discipline. In doing so, you will not go astray and can maintain a good name and lead a happy and useful life.

Because of uncontrolled mind, some have destructive thoughts leading to undesired results. If one
follows certain guidelines as given in our Puranas or Ithihasas, one can lead a sin-free nature of life
which will slowly structure their frame of mind keeping away from unwanted or sinful desires. Sometimes
there is a battle within the mind to choose between the good and bad and it all depends on the
situations and the people with whom they are associated. If one wants to win that battle really,
one has to have a change of mind and habits towards spiritual thoughts and deeds. Sometime, it may
not be possible to desist and in such cases only, one has to fall upon meditation, dyanam, etc. One
has to develop self-confidence, faith and belief in the Supreme Power which will certainly lead to
the cleaning of mind so as to attain purity in thoughts and deeds. Meditation is one of the most
effective methods in controlling unwanted and bad thoughts and to keep away from unnecessary
anxiety or desires. If one practices prayer, worship or dyanam, etc, one can lead a peaceful life
without any burden in mind and disease free.

If there is a boil on the body, we put some ointment on it and cover it with a bandage until the whole wound heals. If you do not apply the ointment and tie a bandage around this boil, it is likely to become septic and can cause greater harm later on. Now and then we will have to clean it with water, apply the ointment again and put on a new bandage. In the same way, in our life, there is this boil which has come up in our body in the form of 'I, I, I..'. If you want to really cure this boil, you will have to wash it every day with the waters of love, apply the ointment of faith on it and tie the bandage of humility around it. The bandage of humility, the ointment of faith, and the waters of love will cure the disease that has erupted with this boil of 'I.'

Some think that humility is just to keep away from pride and ego alone. It is not so.
Similarly merely hiding is not also a true humility. Generally, if a person allows more pride
and ego in one's life, the more problems arise because of certain unexpected and
unwanted acts. If a person does not have selfish attitude, automatically, he/she will
not find fault with others actions as selfish. A person's life can certainly interpret
about one's ego or pride from the very acts and deeds of a person and that can be
easily identified. A person's life can be enjoyable only when one is free from ego and
pride and observe absolute humility. Sometimes arrogance of a person leads to
many problems. Arrogance is nothing but an expression of self importance. Humility
can be achieved only through various good deeds and association with the people of
Satsangh, otherwise one has to spend the mind and heart in divinity. When one's a
person spends time in the arena of divinity and practice discipline, he/she will attain
humility of unquestionable nature. Humility has to be part of one's daily routine. One
has to try to be genuine in one's deeds, speak the truth and maintain honesty besides
simplicity. Worship, prayer, meditation etc can lead to the presence of spiritual feelings
and that can enable a person to discipline oneself and sustain humility.

Shivarathri
is a day when you should establish friendship between the mind and God. Shivarathri makes one aware of the fact that the same Divinity is all-pervasive and is to be found everywhere. It is said that Shiva lives in Kailasa. But where is Kailasa? Kailasa is our own joy and bliss. It means that the Lord lives in the Kailasa of joy, bliss and delight. If you can develop that sense of joy and delight in our mind, then your heart itself is the Kailasa where Shiva lives. How can one get this joy? Joy comes and stays with you when you develop purity, steadiness and sacredness. There is no use in observing Shivarathri once a year. Every minute, every day, every night, you should think of Divinity and sanctify your time, for the Time Principle itself is Shiva.

Devotion to the Divine will give you bliss, prosperity and peace. - Baba

Absolute obedience is the primary requirement for a sincere and an ideal devotee. Normally,
the ego that envelops a person does not allow him to understand the concept of
devotion and obedience towards the Supreme Power. We have a number of examples
from our Puranas or Ithihasas towards the right path and to come out successful in
getting the bliss of the Supreme Power, viz. Arjuna was made clear by Lord Krishna
to understand the divine power, Radha's supreme devotion to Lord Krishna, Sabari's love
towards Lord Rama, etc. There is a sanskrit sloka to remind us about that if one loses
money, it can be regained and one need not to have worry about it. If a friend leaves
in times of troubles, some one will come to rescue on seeing the humility and divinity, why,
even if a person's wife passes, he gets married again, but if one loses the body and good
heart, it cannot be got back. But, if one remains inattentive towards divine power
or the spiritual aspects, there will not be peace of mind or tranquility. Even, if one
is not able to do pooja daily, one can listen to spiritual discourses and study certain divine
scriptures even while traveling or during the leisure hours in the office. A person at least has to try
to follow the path of truth, righteousness and extend help to the needy, if possible. Every person
has to try to foster certain divine principles, which becomes one's primary duty in life.

Blind Love for GOD

A Story for Maha Shivarathri?sri-kalahasthi-temple.webp

Among the great devotees of Lord Shiva, the one that is embedded deep in the heart of many Indians (especially from the South) is the story of Kannappa. The story is a legend which is often heard from the grandparents as a bedtime story in the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Such is the story that it was made into a Kannada movie, Bedara Kannappa ('The Hunter Kannappa'), which was one of the early movies to run in theaters for more than 100 days. The inspiration that one derives from the story is tremendous. It is worth reliving it not only during Shivarathri but at any time of the year. However, with the Mahashivarathri arriving upon us, it would indeed be a blessed experience to examine this story and its message.

Like most of the legends we hear to, there are many versions to this story too. However, the spirit of love and devotion to the Lord is common across all the versions. The protagonist, our hero, is a young tribal hunter lad, Kannappa, who lived in the hills surrounding the now famous Sri Kalahasti Shiva temple.

At first look, everyone appears to be a devotee, but individuals respond differently to different circumstances. If you keep a ball of iron and dry leaf side by side, when there is no wind, both of them will be firm and steady. But when there is a breeze, the dry leaf will be carried many miles away. The iron ball will remain firm and steady. If one has true love and firm faith in God, one will be like an iron ball, steady and undisturbed. If one is like a leaf running away on account of difficulties and problems, it is a travesty to call such a person a devotee. We should develop pure and steady love and faith.

The concept of faith or belief has a wider view. There are some people
who have not been able to accept the faith without any argument.
Generally, one has to have faith or belief in God's omnipotence. In order
to maintain faith, one has to cultivate a habit of long-tenure exercises or
activities. A daily devotional prayer will keep a person in good proximity
to the Supreme Power even when one struggles in his/her faith.
Trust without
obedience or purity of mind is meaningless. A person commences a prayer
or worship with a belief in God, which grows over the years into faith and
that the Supreme Power can certainly influence people in their lives.

The mariner uses his compass to guide him aright amidst the dark storm clouds and raging waves. When a person is overwhelmed by the dark clouds of despair and the raging confusion of irrepressible desires, he too, has a compass which will point to him the direction he has to take. That compass is a society that is dedicated to the propagation of spiritual discipline. So long as man is attracted by outer nature, he cannot escape the blows of joy and grief, of profit and loss, of happiness and misery. But, if he is attracted by the Glory of God within him as well as within Nature, he can be above and beyond these dualities and in perfect peace.

A devotee has to utilize the mind, body and speech in a direction. One such methods can be
Rama Nama Japam, and should form part of an integral part of one's life as a daily routine.
Those devotees who worship the Lord’s Nama daily can gain immensely from it. Spiritual practice
imparts happiness in one's life and it is easier to attain more fruitful results than other forms of
practices. If one does it daily, he/she automatically is bound to proceed and achieve progress
on the spiritual path. The devotee must have purity of thought and an absolute faith in the
Supreme Power's presence. If one establishes this factor of Nama Japam in one’s thoughts,
he/she becomes mentally strong and the power of intellectual strength enhances. He/she will
also gain a very strong will-power. A true devotee believes in the righteous and virtuous conduct.
Sadaachar takes the person's life towards happyness, pure and illustrious, besides guiding one
towards good things. Therefore, the conduct of a devotee is to be righteous so as to attain
a positive influence in the life.
