If a person is to handle unwanted thoughts, feelings and sensations and related anxiety conditions
resistance to the situation is not the only answer. One has to analyse and accept the situation
in a better way so as to respond to the uncomfortable internal experiences of the mind. If a person's
mind is uncontrollable and gets disturbed in such a situation because of unwanted thoughts, perhaps
it is time to get into the problem and see through the truth while acting wise and judging the
issue with the past experience. One finds many thoughts pass through in the course of a day
and some do not really trouble, because one is not interested in such things. While some thoughts
which are sticky, makes a person to comply with. It is because one gives full attention to that.
In the process one thinks on that over and over again. As a result one's mind get disturbed and he/she loses
interest in any issue and in the process his/her peace of mind vanishes. These sensations affects a person's
behaviour too. Suppose if a person is in a vicious cycle he/she develops such a sensation, misinterpreting
things and becoming anxious while seeking assurance from the colleagues leading to further preoccupation
of the mind with worry. In such cases, meditation is only the solution which will create greater peace,
relaxation to the mind and eases a person from unwanted thoughts. If a person practices meditation,
regularly and following the guidelines given in our scriptures, it will easily enable a person to have a
greater ease in living with the ability to flow and adjust with whatever life brings owing to bad or ill
thoughts.

"Nagarasamkeerthan is a mass spiritual awakening. Gather in a temple or some holy place, repeat the Pranava ( the sound Om) and Suprabhaatham (early morning serenade) and then move on for Nagarasamkeerthan."

"Do not start too early or too late, you must go through the streets slowly, singing aloud the Names of all manifestations, just when the people of the locality are awakening and preparing to meet the new day that is dawning.

Do not carry any photo or picture with you, demonstrating your loyalty to any particular Form or Name. Walk along, in well arranged groups, men and women separately, do not plan Nagarasamkeerthan in buses, tractors, cycles, or carts. Do not compete with each other in singing Naamaavalis and cultivate envy or hatred. Let those with a good voice and musical talent lead, the keerthan must be pleasant, it should not jar on the ear. If your voice is grating or out of tune, do not disturb the melody, but, repeat the Naamaavali in your mind. Sing so that the full significance of each Name is evident to the hearers. Do not repeat each line more than twice, let there be time during the journey for a variety of Naamaavalis (compilation of divine names) dealing with many forms and manifestations of God. Do not plan to go through distances too long for the party. Maintain the sacred atmosaphere from the first step to the last."

On Friday, 28 June 1968, at Devi Vilas, Palghat, thrice blessed by Baba's visit, 93 year old Sri Bharat Kesari Mannath Padmanabhan, the founder-leader of the NSS, Nair Service Society, Kerala, was suddenly taken ill. His condition worsened hour after hour. Speech became incoherent; he lost his memory; his condition was pronounced comatic. His pulse was only 50; he was definitely sinking. Stalwarts of the medical profession had rushed into the room as soon as they received the news; they declared that it was a case of cerebral thrombosis. "Only a miracle can save him," they said.
Mannamji had dedicated himself 50 years ago, to the service of the community. Before a lighted lamp, with five wicks, and a measure of paddy kept in ritual ceremonial, Mannamji had taken solemn pledge, and his aged mother had blessed him, invoking God, while placing her hand on his head. He has worked to fulfill that pledge, for half-a- century now; the result is evident all over Kerala, 100 High Schools, 20 Colleges, Polytechnics, Engineering College, Medical, Missions, Temples. Unmindful of his 93 summers, Mannamji had come to Palghat, for some work related to the Engineering College of the Nair Service Society. The day he arrived was Thursday, when Devi Vilas had Baba Bhajan, in the evening. He listened reverentially to the Bhajan. He said, "This Bhajan has given me overwhelming joy; I am so full of joy, that I have no relish for dinner.’ He stood with folded palms before the decorated portrait of Baba for sometime. He talked with the inmates for some time, on the meaning and purpose of the advent of Baba. Then, he retired for the night. Next morning, he was ill.
The foremost doctors, standing around his bed, said, "Only a miracle can save him." And, the miracle happened! Mrs Menon dashed into the prayer room. She recalled the miraculous cures effected by Baba's grace; she remembered His declaration: "My Dharma is Bhaktarakshana.” She brought a packet of the Vibhuti which Baba had created and given to her; a few pinches of that Vibhuti were given to Mannamji.. Amazing! Glorious! Mannamji rallied round; he tided over the crisis; he became almost normal. Doctors, kinsmen, and friends stood bewildered; they whispered, "It is Divine Grace, indeed, that has saved Mannamji!"
What was developing into a dangerous and critical cerebral thrombosis fizzled out, into a mere blood spasm. The clot in the brain had dissolved.
Doctors say that this cure is unique in medical history... After a couple of days' rest at Devi Vilas, Mannamji went back to Trivandrum journeying 250 miles, by car. And, there, he progressed fast.
I was privileged to be a thrilled participant of this Mahima revealing Baba's Glory and Grace, His Compassion and His Omnipresence.

One should not worry about the present state of affairs with an eye blinking on everything
as to what would happen to us. One has many methods to obtain a positive solution if one is
motivated towards the opportunities with an extra effort in any task. Perseverance and
patience in life can bring a change to all the difficulties which may disappear and vanish if
one is ordained to worship or pray the Supreme Power. A few may come across failures in
life perhaps because of their lack of persistence in their effort in doing worship or prayer
purely owing to non-belief or faith in the Supreme Power. Such people may think that
they have no spare time for doing bodily exercises like pranayamam, yoga or meditation, etc.
Success or Positive Results come only to those who have perseverance in their divine exercises.
No special talent is essential or an extraordinary perseverance but only a dedicated mind and
heart in the Namasmaran of the Supreme Power and an absolute faith about HIS existence.
There is no special or specific route to be drawn, particularly to those who are economically
not sound, but if one wants to attain HIS bliss, persistence in the effort together with
perseverance can certainly fetch the desired results. If one wants the lamp in the pooja
room to be burning continuously to look at the beauty of the Supreme Power, he/she has to
be alert in the place by dropping the oil in the lamp whenever required, so as to eliminate
the darkness of ignorance in the mind and heart to think of HIM always.

A Sai devotee was once speaking to a friend when the latter randomly popped a question: “Since you have been His devotee for so long, I am sure your life must be very smooth, right?” The devotee was taken aback by the question because he had never visualized his relationship with Baba from a business perspective. He always enjoyed the love he felt for Baba and the love he received in return. There was never any bargain or requests. The friend’s question, however, prompted the devotee to introspect. In fact, the devotee’s life was a hodge-podge of turbulent circumstances. There was a constant barrage of challenges and difficulties that left him with little room to live peacefully. From financial challenges to health issues and family hostilities, he had experienced all of that. He finally asked Baba, “Why so many difficulties when I pray to you?”
The compassionate Lord assured him as follows:

“My Beloved, can you ever measure the depth of the ocean with a small measuring container? The worldly perspective that your friend offered was like a small cup, whereas my grace is like the ocean. How can you measure one with the other? The hallmark of true devotion is not measured by the number (or absence) of worldly difficulties. For a true Sai devotee, the entire world is filled with Sai. Where does the question of difficulty ever arise? One’s devotion is tested on the basis of equanimity, fortitude, faith, love, and an attitude of selfless service and sacrifice. Problems are not the touchstone for measuring devotion.”

Didn’t Jesus, Mira, Buddha Hanuman face difficulties? Yet, despite the plethora of challenges they always smiled and resorted to God’s name, without ever swerving from the path leading to God. Despite the difficulties, they marched on knowing fully-well that all the “so called challenges” would foster their latent dispassion and devotion even further.

Life is short, time is fleeting: your spiritual practice (sadhana) is creeping at tortoise pace. When will you decide to proceed a little faster? Your sadhana is like the answers you write at the examination. If you get only five or six marks, the examiner will strike out even that, saying, "What is the use of these few marks: it will take this student neither here nor there." If you get somewhere near the passing marks, then Grace will give you just a little more so that you may pass, provided you have been a diligent and well-behaved student. Engage yourselves in good deeds, good company and good thoughts. Fix your attention on the goal.

Spiritual Sadhana means cultivating good thoughts and undertaking good deeds. - Baba

One has to focus the mind in good deeds whenever one has spare time. We
have a number of instances to quote, which have clearly exhibited that
helping others is actually beneficial for one's own mental health and wellbeing.
Because, it reduces stress as well as enhances one's temperament self-esteem
and happiness. Extending help to someone else whether known or unknown
it enhances social support, gives an encouragement to lead a more physically
active lifestyle, keeping away from one's own problems for a while and allowing
that person to get engaged in a meaningful activity, while improvising the
self-esteem and competence besides producing positive emotions. It thus
reduces the stress and increases the immunity in a person which in turn
may be able to protect a person from any diseases caused due to mental
stress, mindset or pressure. To awaken a person towards good feelings,
thoughts, etc regular practice of Sadhana is absolutely essential. Sadhana
is the true path of devotion, if someone is interested to communicate with the
Supreme Power through dedicated practice of devotional exercises. If a person
goes through the valuable Hindu scriptures, one can gain spiritual knowledge which
would facilitate to develop self wisdom. One has to overcome from pessimistic
thoughts. Offering a leaf of Tulasi to Lord Krishna and a leaf of Vilvam to Lord
Parameswara daily with wholehearted bhakthi and absolute faith will certainly fetch positive
outcome. Once this is done daily, automatically a person gains good thoughts,
feelings, good sentiments, positive motivation and makes a way towards right
attitude. Some people do it as a matter of fashion and that does not help anyone.
Spiritual practices have to be done with complete devotion and wholeheartedly
assuming the Supreme Power in one's heart and mind.

Silence is the only language of the realized. Practice moderation in speech. That will help you in many ways. It will develop Prema, for most misunderstandings and factions arise out of carelessly spoken words. When the foot slips, the wound can be healed; but when the tongue slips, the wound it causes in the heart of another will fester for life. The tongue is liable to four big errors: uttering falsehood, scandalizing, finding fault with others, and excessive speech. All these have to be avoided if there is to be santhi for the individual as well as for society.

(Sathya Sai Baba, SSS. Vol.1 p. 62)

One of the first principles of straight living is the practice of silence. For the voice of God can be heard in the region of your heart when the tongue is stilled and the storm is tilled and the waves are calm. There will be no temptations for others to shout when you talk to them in whispers. Set the level of the tone yourself; as low as possible, as high as necessary to reach the outermost boundary of the circle you are addressing. Conserve sound, since it is the treasure of the element akasa, an emanation from God Himself.

Reason can prevail only when arguments are advanced without the whipping up of sound. Silence is the speech of the spiritual seeker. Soft sweet speech is the expression of genuine love. Hate screeches, fear squeals, conceit trumpets. But love sings lullabies. It soothes. It applies balm. Practice the vocabulary of love; unlearn the language of hate and contempt.

The system of education, which promotes an attitude of contempt towards learning that does not yield monetary benefits, is largely responsible for the neglect of great scriptures and saints. Another cause is the general decline in the moral standards of living. When all are sliding down the easy path of flippancy, those who advise against it and warn about the inevitable disaster are ignored and laughed at. Sunk in the search of pleasures and cheap recreation, people become deaf to the counsels of the ancient and calls of the sublime. Scriptures are like traffic signals in a busy junction. If the signals are removed, the journey is rendered slow and difficult, filled with accidents and chaos. We cannot afford to destroy them. We have to restore them for the well-being of humanity.

Earlier also, we have read somewhere that Vedas, Upanishads and Shasthras are like traffic signs on the road.
These are only guidelines to us as to how to obey them and go by the norms that are set for us to follow.
A dark night can never indicate us about the surface of the earth, unless there is a light to indicate the potholes,
up and downs, etc. Scriptures enable us to come out from ignorance. Our ancient Scholars and Pandits have
given us some Shastras with some purpose to uphold the higher values of Dharma and to fulfill our Karma.
The need of the hour is bhakthi embedded education to make everyone understand the values of scriptures
and spiritual discipline. Once a person develops Jnanam together with steadiness and faith in HIM, one can
win HIS bliss. Troubles may come and go in life but one should not loose faith, courage and must not keep
away from spiritual activities. Normally one can notice a few lack in righteousness owing to moral weakness.
One has to think and spend sometime daily for having the glimpse of our valuable scriptures which will give us
a good moral and spiritual education.

THREE PATHS

"I do not agree that Bhakti, Karma and Jnana are separate. I do not place any one before the other, nor will I accept a mixture of the three. Karma is Bhakti; Bhakti is Jnana. A piece of candy has taste, weight and shape; the three cannot be separated. Each bit has all the three; we do not find shape in one bit, weight in another and sweetness in the third. When the candy is placed on the tongue, the taste, the weight and the shape are simultaneously experienced. Similarly, Jnana, Karma and Bhakti may be truly experienced only as one whole."

Karma is love in action, Jnana is love experienced and Bhakti is love universally shared. Thus, Baba dismissed in one stroke all disputations about the superiority of any one of these disciplines over the other.

Implicit obedience to The Lord is what is desirable for an ideal devotee. The veil of delusion which covers up the Divinity inherent in man is so thick that it inflates man’s ego, tempting him to forget even God. Arjuna, while being driven by Lord Krishna in the Kurukshetra battlefield, donning the role of Charioteer, was in this ‘tight-spot’ with his ego pumped up for a moment, only to learn the big lesson finally reposing full faith in Lord Krishna.

Those were the days of Mahabharata war. At the end of the 9th day of the war, Arjuna returned with Krishna from the battlefield filled with excitement of victory. On that day, ego entered his mind and he considered Krishna merely a charioteer of his chariot and himself as the cause of the victory. Krishna stopped the chariot near the camp of Arjuna and asked him, “Brother-in-law, get down from the chariot.” As is the common practice those days that the driver of the car gets down from the car first and opens the door of the car to enable the owner to get down from it, Arjuna wanted Krishna to observe the same decorum and get down first. He asked Him with pride and impertinence, “Brother-in-law, You should get down first.” In reply, Krishna said to him, “Brother-in-law, you get down and go inside.” But Arjuna was stubborn and said to Krishna, “You get down first and I will get down after that only.” Then Krishna sternly commanded Arjuna, “No, no. You have to get down first.” In this way, there were arguments and counter arguments between Arjuna and Krishna for some time.

In the end, Arjuna unwillingly got down from the chariot fearing what Krishna might do if he did not obey Him. Krishna then ordered him to go inside. Arjuna was surprised and did not understand why Krishna was ordering him so forcefully like that. As Arjuna went inside, Krishna jumped down from the chariot. As soon as He did so, the chariot was engulfed in flames and reduced to ashes. Then Arjuna asked Krishna, “What is all this?” Krishna said to Arjuna, smilingly, “It is for the same reason that I asked you to get down from the chariot first, though you were not willing to do so. In today’s war, Bhishma attacked you with fierce fiery weapons. In order to protect you, I suppressed them under My Feet. If I had got down from the chariot before you, you would have been burned down along with the chariot.”

Thinking of the dreadful consequence if he had not got down from the chariot first, Arjuna was filled with repentance. Such is the veil of delusion which covers up the divinity inherent in man and inflates his ego. Reposing his full faith in Krishna, Arjuna worshipped Him with great devotion. Lord Krishna, therefore, was always with him and protected him. We can attain the grace of the Lord by following His command.

There is no use arguing and quarreling amongst you. Examine, experience and then you will know the truth. Be silent when you are still undecided or engaged in evaluating. Do not proclaim before you are convinced. Of course, you must discard all evil in you before you can attempt to evaluate the mystery. When faith dawns, it is very important to fence it with discipline and self-control. Just as the tender sapling is guarded with a fence to protect against the goats and cattle; you too should stay away from the motley crowd of cynics and unbelievers. When your faith grows into a big tree, those very cattle which wanted to eat the young plant now lay and rest in the shade of the tree which has spread with lots of branches and leaves.

The first enemy you must win over is an uncontrolled mind. - Baba

Without God consciousness life is incomplete. If one is not able to control the senses
the entire duration of life of a person becomes wasted and misused in the wrong path.
Lusty desires and senses prevailing person leads always an uncomfortable life, though
one may enjoy pleasures for a short duration. If one continues to possess the
the uncontrolled mind, it may be difficult to attain the spiritual intelligence. If a person
is not happy, as Lord Krishna says, one cannot have concentration of the mind.
For everything concentration and dedicated mind is absolutely essential. One has to make
an attempt to bring the senses by force by controlling the mind. If a person is not
having concentration of the mind, one may not be able to do meditation and it may not
be possible to have an inner awakening. Therefore an uncontrolled mind does not produce
the desired results. Sometimes it leads to committing unwanted sins in life.

We should partake food with a Sathwic mind. Our ancestors recommended the offering of food to God before partaking. Food so partaken becomes "Prasad" (consecrated offering). Prayer cleanses the food of the three impurities; caused by the absence of cleanliness of the vessel, cleanliness of the food stuff, and cleanliness in the process of cooking. It is necessary to get rid of these three impurities to purify the food; for, pure food goes into the making of a pure mind.

It is not possible to ensure the purity of the cooking process, since we do not know what thoughts rage in the mind of the man who prepares the food. Similarly, we cannot ensure the cleanliness of the food ingredients as we do not know whether it was acquired in a righteous way by the seller who has sold it to us. Hence, it is essential on our part to offer food to God in the form of prayer, so that these three impurities do not afflict our mind. The prayer:

Brahmaarpanam Brahma Havir
Brahmaagnau Brahmanaa Hutam
Brahmaiva Tena Gantavyam
Brahma Karma Samaadhinaha
