All are devotees, who have gathered here.
Devotees from all the nations of the world have gathered here.
Therefore, I should not fail to tell you about a certain matter:
World Conferences or Conferences of different faiths or assemblies of spiritual aspirants from all nations have taken place, before this.
But, such have happened, after the Divine Inspirer has left the world.
This Conference, however, is taking place, when this Body and the Name associated with this Body are present in the World.
This has to be considered by you.
The basic cause of this uniqueness is the Reality of My Advent.
Ninety nine out of a hundred among you cannot delve into that Reality.
You have gathered here, drawn by diverse needs.
Some have come seeking spiritual uplift.
Some have come seeking the progress of institutions and organisations, in which they are interested.
Some have come prompted by mere love and reverence.
Some have yielded to the temporary urge of enthusiasm
To every one, My Reality is unreachable,
Unreachable it will be, not today only, but, for a thousand years of ardent inquiry by all the people of the world, even if, they sought it unitedly.
But, the Bliss emanating from that Reality (Tattwa)—that has come in this sacred Body—is within your reach and the reach of the nations of the earth, and you can partake of it quite soon.
When you observe Me moving among you, talking as you do and eating as you do, and thence conclude that I Am but human, you are perpetrating a mistake.
In all ages, this has been the lot of man.
Men have failed to recognise Me, for I am enveloped in humanness.
My Reality is this: This is a Human Form, worn by the Principle that manifests Itself as all, the God-forms adored by Man.
I must say that I confuse you through words and actions.
But, however confused, if you only install in the altar of your heart, steady faith in My Divinity, you can achieve the Vision of My real Reality.
If, instead, you swing like the pendulum of a clock, one moment to one side and the next to the other, you can never comprehend My Truth.
Let Me draw your attention to another point:
On other occasions when there was the Advent of the Incarnations of God, the world bent before Them, often for reasons other than Divine, namely, imperial authority or some such related power or influence.
But, now, in this Kali Age of rampant materialism, in this Manifestation of Sathya Sai, all the peoples are adoring It, because, as must be clearly evident to you, It is the Godhead that is the Prime Principle, beyond All.
This Sathya Sai Swarupam (Manifestation) is Daivaswarupam (Divine Reality).
You are fortunate that you can grasp this Truth, not at some future date when this Human Frame has been discarded, but, luckily, even while It is with you, before you.
You will soon be awarded the chance to witness the homage of adoration that all countries will offer to India (Bharat-desa), and to listen to the Declaration by all peoples of the Divinity of this Sathya Sai Manifestation.
And, there is something more:
I have resolved to enfold in the fostering care of Sanathana Dharma, the Dharma laid down in the Vedas, the peoples of the world.

This will be done, soon.
This is My Task; it is not My Task to spread awe and wonder in the World, by My Power and draw men to Me thereby.
I shall sustain Truth, and uproot Untruth.
I shall render you happy and ecstatic, in the Splendour of that Triumph.
This Saiswarupam is the Sakthiswarupam which will achieve that Triumph, and confer that Bliss.

SADHANA

601478_355301417916070_1253266883_n.jpg

Once a householder devotee asked Sri Ramakrishna, "How does one make acquaintance with the Lord?"The sage replied, "If you merely sit on the shore of a lake and say there are nice fish in the lake, will you catch any?

You will have to go and get the things necessary for fishing — a rod and line, and bait — and throw some lure into the water and wait. Then from the deep water the fish will rise and you will be able to see and catch them. You wish me to show you God while you sit quietly without making the least effort. Make the effort". In spiritual terms the effort we put into seeking divinity becomes our sadhana or spiritual discipline.

pixel.gif

The word sadhana is derived from the root word 'sidh'which means 'to be accomplished'. Sadhana is essentially a code of self-imposed discipline and practice that the sadhak willingly undergoes for spiritual uplift.

A healthy desire to grow spiritually fuels the sadhak's journey. The tapas involved purifies and burns the dross. Just as the action of the sun's rays makes saline seawater evaporate into the air to become sweet and sustaining, sadhana raises your consciousness from the physical to the metaphysical, conferring sweetness and grace.

A life without spiritual awakening is incomplete, however successful it may be in worldly terms. Such a life is nir-ras — without ras or nectar — because it lacks awareness of the sweetness of spirit.

Sadhana leads one to the inward path or nivritti marg as distinct from the pravitti marg, which leads to the outside objective world.

"To attain a full life man must master two fields of knowledge — of the manifest universe and of the consciousness that pervades and validates the universe. One knowledge gives him the right and authority to engage in a profession and earn a living and the other teaches him the mode and manner of right living", says Sathya Sai Baba.

All scriptures say that right living is built primarily on the pillars of eternal values like sathya, dharma, shanti, prema and ahimsa. These values have to be brought to the fore by sadhana. Sadhana is the inner work we do to open the doors to our higher consciousness, which is the unseen basis of life itself.

What qualifies as sadhana? Sathya Sai Baba says: "Anything that awakens the awareness of the universal, the infinite, the transcendent... and any work which takes you out of your narrow self into the vaster magnificence..."qualifies as spiritual sadhana.

The main purpose of all sadhana is to ready you to leap into a higher state of consciousness. "Ideals must become higher and grander. Desires must become more and more selfless and sublime. Attachment must be transmuted into nobler and subtler emotions..."In the sincere seeker sadhana creates a raised awareness of his shortcomings and the need to overcome them. Love is the best sadhana.

Continuity of practice and regularity are important elements of sadhana; sporadic effort will yield no result. The goal is attained stage by stage.

Avoid extremes and keep your sadhana pleasant and moderate. The aim is to enlarge vision and enhance experience, and not mortify the body.

pixel.gif

If life essentially is a pilgrimage to return to our own Self then sadhana is our means to get there. Our worldly works earn us a living and our inner work (sadhana) earns us the bliss of an enlightened life.

For Bhagavan Baba, quality is always more important than quantity.

During the period the Super Speciality Hospital in Puttaparthi was under construction, Bhagavan was quite busy and could not spend as much time with His students as He normally did. In the afternoons, after Darshan and a few Interviews, He would be closeted with doctors.

One day, after giving Darshan and receiving letters from the public as well as students, He adjourned as usual to the Interview room. Suddenly He came out holding a letter in His hand. Waving the letter He went towards the students and asked, "Which of you wrote this?" Hesitantly, one boy got up. Swami asked, "You wrote this?" Meekly the boy nodded his head, fearing the worst. Swami then turned towards the elders in the veranda and said, "This boy is a student here. He is very keen to contribute to the Hospital Project. In this letter, he says that he is not a doctor and therefore cannot contribute service. He is not a rich man and therefore cannot make a donation. He is only a mere student. Yet, he is keen to do his bit. So, what does he do? He saves his pocket money, collects hundred rupees and gives it Swami." So saying, Baba pulled out a hundred rupee currency note from the envelope in His hand and displayed it to the devotees there.

Bhagavan then slowly added. "For Swami, these hundred rupees represent pure Love emanating from the heart. They are therefore far more valuable than a big donation made perfunctorily." God always cares only for quality and not quantity.

‘Speak the Truth and Practice Righteousness, Sathyam Vada Dharmam Chara,’ says the scriptures. They also declare Sathyam Naasthi Paro Dharmaha - there is no dharma or law greater than Truth. Note that the Vedic injunction is “Dharmam Chara” - Practice Right Conduct. It is not enough if you learn about it, you must practice it, fill every moment with thoughts, words and deeds that reflect your awareness of this Dharma. Such a life is the hallmark of one who possesses true good character. And it is this character which the scriptures refer to as one’s best ornament.

By systematic practice of compassion, equanimity, sublime attitude, etc while gradually
eliminating the hatred, jealousy, unwanted desires, etc one can cultivate good virtues.
Generally emotions are biased ones from the point of view of self interest and egoism.
One has to overcome the emotions gradually and has to gain control over the mind to
have persistent practice of good deeds. One has to have a clear thinking with self control
without any diversion of mind in unwanted things or deeds, even under pressure or typical
situations. Keeping aside the pride and prejudice, one has to recognize the importance of self
development towards intellectual and mental development and concentration in the field of
spiritual practices. If one develops the virtues of selflessness and prepare for doing sacrifices
if required for the benefit of needy or utilise the potential for upbringing good virtues in life,
one can attain complete mental satisfaction and this needs change of one's lifestyle keeping
aside certain self aspirations. Sometimes one may have to fore go the pleasure for the sake
of upbringing good virtues. One has to try to practice good virtues in daily life. One should
not forget our traditional values, be it moral or spiritual or social as that influences a
person in one's day to day life. One should understand the concept of death is certain and
life is uncertain. Systematic practice of meditation brings peace of mind.

God is your Friend

Swami often asks young boys, "How many brothers do you have?" Boys invariably reply
along expected lines by saying two, or three, etc., as is the case. Swami then smiles and softly whispers, "All are your brothers!" After this He asks of another boy, "How many friends do you have?" Taking the cue from the earlier conversation, this second boy
would say, "Swami, all are my friends." Swami would again smile, and gently say, "No, all are not your friends; God alone is
your friend

By keeping God as your guide and savior, whatever work you may do yield sure success whereas all other friends may be with you as long as you have wealth. But the moment loses everything, that friend desert you. God will be the only friend who will be ever with you, in you and beside you; only way for prosperity is to develop friendship with God.

Sri Sathya Sai Baba - Anecdotes

Atma is basis for everything.

563471_352160758230136_732734027_n.jpg

The light of Atma illumines the mind and enables it to see the external world.Without this illumination the mind cannot comprehend the world. It shines because of the light from the Atma. The mind is like the moon which receives its light from the sun.It has not light of its own. When the sun shines the moon is hardly visible.Likewise, when there is awarness of the Atma the mind is not perceivable. The atma is the basis for everything.

Be fixed in the consciousness that you are the immortal Atma - holy, pure and Divine. This will give you unshakable courage and strength. Then you will develop mutual love and respect. Tolerate all kinds of persons and opinions, all attitudes and peculiarities. The school, your home, your workplace and the society - all of these are training grounds for tolerance. Each one must be aware of their duties and rights. All relationships must be based on love, and not fear. Only the atmosphere of love can guarantee happy co-operation and concord. Above all, be good, honest and well-behaved. That will make your degrees and achievements more desirable and valuable.

- Divine Discourse, Feb 2 1958

Consciousness is nothing but prevalence of an ability to understand and experience
the senses, emotions, perceptions, etc. Thus consciousness is the mixture of
various processes that goes on in our brain. As soon as one passes away, only the body dies,
and the consciousness gets terminated. Some say that it only changes its place. Therefore,
we have to create a place for the Supreme or the Divine Power to live within it. One
should try to learn in this Universe how to manage the consciousness in the right
direction towards spiritual activities. In other words, in the present day technological
arena one may have to typically analyse as to how to upload himself/herself with the spiritual
activities. May be that it may be extremely difficult to switch over to sudden challenges for a
moment because one might not have been accustomed to spiritual activities over the years
because of different situations or circumstances at home, office or in the society but one has
to understand the reality. Wisdom dawns in a person only when one understands the actual
benefits and its impact. For some, who study scriptures or listen to discourses etc easily
tune themselves to attain divine wisdom or self realization. While for some the ignorance persists
because they give importance in some other area without unfolding their inner powers. One has
to identify the divine consciousness through yoga or meditation, prayer, worship etc. with
absolute concentration on the great scriptures that our Country possesses and the guidelines of
Spiritual Seers who have enabled us to learn and practice.

The temptation to ignore Dharma grows from egoism and the acceptance of false values. The wish to satisfy the lower desire is the root of adharma (unrighteousness). This wish takes hold of you slyly, pretending to be a comrade come to save you, or like a servant come to attend on you, or like a counsellor come to warn you. Wickedness has a thousand tricks to capture your heart. You must be ever alert against the temptation; you often remind others of Dharma when you desire to squeeze some advantage from them. You must remember not only the rights that Dharma confers but also the duties it imposes.

This Society is very large. In order to maintain a divine feeling between
a human being and God, harmonic and cordial relation between a human and
a human, and their environments, in some places like villages some festivals
are conducted either annually or at periodical intervals. The whole day the Hindu
Community people usually visit the temple and they forgive each other and join
together and the day is simply filled with buzzing activity doing Pooja or offerings, etc.
and such occasions are meant to create an awareness of righteous activities and also
of one's sacred inner power. Offerings are placed at the entrance of the Amman Sannathi
on the ground and people feel such offerings enhances their positive powers. The rituals are
performed with sincerity and honesty. Once when I asked them why are you killing the animals, they
immediately mentioned that the mankind should understand the adharma. According to them,
the killing of animals in this regard is only a symbolic one and the killing denotes the animal
nature of feelings and thoughts in one's mind. There are many examples to quote like that
the Pandavaas had many temptations to shift towards Adharma but they never did that
instead they proceeded with the very difficult path of Dharma and won the war. We have in
our Hindu Puranas, there are many examples and stories to learn and uphold the Dharma
and some are undeniable and un-rejectable ones and one should understand the dharmic
essence for day to day practice. These days we notice some are tensed with utterance
of adharmic statements and even doing adharmic activities without examining fully the
subsequent consequences. There is a quote that one can fool some people all the
time and all of the people some of the time but one cannot fool all the people at
all times. One has to clean the dust from the mind particularly from the angle of egoism,
hatred, jealousy, etc. as Baba says.

Each person desires happiness and peace. Nobody wants misery. However, the mistake in them lies in the fact that they are not able to realise where true happiness and peace are to be found. Real happiness and peace can neither be found in wealth and possession nor in academic ,material or Scientific vocations. These give only transitory peace and happiness. Real peace exist only in love of God.Man's true endeavour in life should be to attain God's love.

Narada, the celestial sage, was once so shocked at the ignorance of the Gopikas, that he volunteered to put them through some spiritual lessons. After coming to Brindavan, he noticed that these cowherd girls who were selling milk or curds were calling, "Govinda, Narayana," instead of the wares they were selling; so immersed were they in God-consciousness. They did not know that they had sold off all the milk; they still wandered on, calling out the names of the Lord. They had no vishayavasana, that is, no wish for sensual objects; and so they had no ajnana (ignorance). Narada concluded that they had no need for his lessons instead he prayed to them to teach him the means of getting that yearning and that vision of the all-pervading Krishna. To conquer egoism, no rigorous system of exercise, breath control or complicated scholarship is necessary! The simple Gopikas, have demonstrated this truth.

Egoism can spoil a character of a person as Baba says. No doubt ego can be dangerous
and it spoils a person through his behaviour and unnecessary gossiping, arguments, etc.
Ego does not allow a person to have a honest self examination or to assess his ability
to share his/her existing weaknesses. One has to slowly and slowly turn the thought
process and pay attention towards the divine power so as to energize one's mind. Once
one makes an attempt to do this act regularly, the ego gets temporarily set aside and
one would be able to feel and notice the what the reality is. Say 10 to 15 minutes in
the morning and similarly in the evening if one focuses the attention on Pranayama and
do the breath control exercise both the mind and body would get tuned and it would
pave a way for a practice of quietness or silence reflection which may facilitate in
understanding the need for the divinity too simultaneously. Once a person adopts the
practice of cowheard girls as seen above by chanting the Namas of Govinda, Narayana,
etc with belief and confidence, one can get detached from ego and unnecessary gossiping
and a person turns into transparent thinking of Divine Power's effects. Hence one has
to recognize this factor, to find a healthy balance of mind and heart while maintaining
reasonable detachment from one's egos, which cannot be straight away eliminated at one
stroke as it is prevalent for sometime with the person. Another method can be that one
can get engaged in meaningful activities viz. social service in Satsangh developing a
personality cult so as to attain a feeling and an emotion of divine service keeping away
his personal status in society or in his personal life throwing away the ego besides facilitating
to understand one's shortcomings and understanding the concept of humility and
genuineness of developing emotional strength of divine power.
