Truly speaking, the farmers are holy ones, for they bend under the weight of the service they do. With hands raised in prayer, they toil night and day, converting dust and dirt into nourishing harvest of grain for all people to feed on. Similarly, the Lord will be very pleased with the harvest of virtues, for it also truly sustains the world. Embark on this holy task from today and make the fruits of your efforts very sacred! Worry and grief will always be there – something or the other from the past, present or future will bother you whether you are awake or asleep. Do not give up your worldly duties, but do them with the Name of the Lord on your lips, inviting the grace of God with gratitude. Then worry and grief will vanish and you will have peace! Also do not involve yourself in the affairs of others and get so entangled that you cannot extricate yourself.

Guru can make a disciple to get an awareness in life. But, it is for the devotee
to approach a right and dedicated Guru

Om anjnana-timirandhasya
Jnananjana-salakaya
caksur unmilitam yena
tasmai sri-gurave namah

While taking birth no body knows anything and it is he who is reformed and ignorance
is driven from him by the Guru. A Guru, who is spiritually high can open the eyes of a
disciple and would be able to impart the knowledge for becoming a proper disciple.
Hence, a disciple should always be obedient to the Guru and learn from him and
proceed in the right path as advised by the Guru.

Get rid of differences based on caste and creed. Develop firm faith in the oneness of Humanity. Cultivate love in your hearts. Then nations will be united, prosperous and happy.

Set right your habits, purify your conduct and cleanse your behavior. Even one bad habit can destroy all health, happiness, charm and joy. Control yourself and do not yield to the temptations of friends or social conventions and become prey to bad habits. The body is the temple of the Lord. Keep it in good and strong condition. Also be aware that it can be damaged from qualities such as anger, hatred and greed, or from sloth, sleep and inactivity. When you get angry and/or violent with anyone, quietly repeat the Name of the Lord to save you from your anger. Drink a glass of cold water, or lie down in a bed until the fit of fury passes through. When you are angry, you abuse another and the other person does the same, so tempers rise and heat is generated which causes lasting injury. Five minutes of anger can damage five generations of relationship, so be careful.

Anger can bring unimaginable problems by damaging relationships
between husband and wife and family members. This can also create
problems while in office and sometimes leading to involvement court cases,
etc. Some immediately resort to consuming alcohol, drugs, or other unwanted
things to control their anger. Some express through outbursts at frequent
intervals, shouting at others, sometimes, threatening the affected people,
damaging assets, and at times use physical forces. This incidentally, drives
away the person's ability breaking down of the relationship once for all. One
has to tolerate such behaviorsand avoid confrontation or tension. Such
people should sit in a quiet place and try to change their mind towards
spiritual aspects, so that they can get a permanent remedy in life.

Initially for a person to understand the religious books and their real
interpretation is difficult, unless it is explained by a Guru or a Scholar
who is a guide. A Hindu normally follows the religion sincerely and
honestly. Recently I heard in a pravachanam about the expansion for
the word Hindu i.e. H stands for honesty, I stands for integrity,
N stands for nobility, D stands for devotion, and U stands for unity.
If this is followed in true spirit, all the Hindus will be an example to
others. Normally in Patashalas or in Gurukulam, these ideals are
taught strictly in letter and spirit. Besides, Hindu Upanishads, Vedas,
etc which are mostly in Sanskrit have to be learnt properly. If one
goes through that under an able guide, one can through a good light
and gain wisdom. Besides, the food what we consume plays a pivotal
role. There are ancient stories explaining these features. Normally,
some people do not eat food outside their house for various reasons. Some
sacrifice food if they are unable to get a proper diet for reasons best
known to them. Because, the food consumed is held esteem in higher
order in accordance with Hindu Sastras. According to Manu, from the
sun comes rain, and from rain food, and therefrom all the living creatures
in this Universe derive their subsistence. Therefore, habit of a person is
formulated through the food one consumes.

A clean consciousness is as a lamp; pour into it the oil of Grace; place in it the wick of self control; keep in position the chimney of Namasmarana, so that gusts of joy and grief might not scotch the flame.

Light the lamp, with some Mahavakya, like Aham Brahmasmi or Thath Thwam asi. Then, you will not only have Light; you will be a source of Light.

A millionaire pays income tax with tears in his eyes. A Headmaster joyfully gives up the furniture and laboratory appliances of the school when he is transferred to another place. Why? Because the headmaster knows and believes that he is only the caretaker, and is not the owner. They are not attached to these articles, for they know that these belong to the Government. So too, every one of you must feel that your family, your house, your fields, your car are all the Lord’s property. You are just a trustee and must be ready to give them up without murmur, at a moment’s notice. Sacrifice does not mean that you should not attach value to things. You must indeed care for everything. But remember, that all of them are transient and the joy they give is very trivial and temporary. Know their real worth, do not overestimate them and develop attachment to them.

Sometimes, we neglect the divine power. It is the divine power that takes
care of us. One will not experience the divine power unless one makes
sincere attempt to know the crux of it. One is not living in this Universe
without the support of the divine power, though one may not accept it
instantly. The Universe is so large and we are a small fly in it. Everyone

is created only by the blessings of the Divine power. If one is required to
feel the experience of life one has to spend sometime daily in the divine
activities and also follow the path of spiritual duties rigidly. It is only when
a person observes, he or she would automatically experience it over a period
of time. Lack of attention, concentration, frustration or fear in life will not
fetch the desired results.

Q: Swami! i wish to settle down here, at Puttaparthi, which is my Real Home.
A: The repose of the wave is in the Ocean, which is its support and sustenance. Your home is neither America nor India, neither New York nor Puttaparthi; nor, any place of pilgrimage, sanctified by saints. What matters is, not what you do, but, how; not where you are, but, how you are. As for this being your home, rest assured that I will protect you, no matter where you are. You cannot be separate from Me; you are not separate from Me.
Q: You are my Guru, Swami.
A: I Am with you and within you; here and now, there and ever. From within, I dissolve your doubts, allay your fears, stop your anguish. Is that not your experience?
Q: I am unworthy of all this compassion.
A: You say so, because the way of the world is to reward worthiness and deny even attention to those it judges unworthy. But, I know of no such limitation or distinction. Sunshine falls on all; it disinfects all, warms all, illumines all. I know you want a tangible Sadhana, suited to the equipment you now possess.
Q: I am tired of this unending round of joys and sorrows.
A: But, you have lived with them all these years and all these lives, too. Why do you talk of certain happenings as joys and certain others, as sorrows? Today's joy may well be tomorrow's sorrow; what is joy for you may well be another's sorrow. Do not judge happenings as good or bad, pleasurable or painful. What right have you to judge? Submit to the test—whether it is light or hard. Be glad, be thankful that you are tested and toughened and cleansed. Your inner consciousness must be like the sky, where no trail is left by the flight of birds or planes or rockets.
Q: What Sadhana is best for me, Swami?
A: Be like the log of wood that is tossed about by waves; but, be aware of your being on the lap of the Ocean. Be delighted that wind and water are playing with you; do not want it to be different; do not want anything; be fully content.
Q: But, Swami, I must reach the shore…
A: It is a shoreless Ocean, this Ocean of Bliss and Grace. Give up trying to go anywhere. Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached, they say. But there is nowhere to go; the goal is in you, realisable as soon as you arise and awake, as soon as you know you are the wave on the Ocean, of the Ocean.
Q: Then, I need make no effort?
A: You have to; it is a challenge to all men. Relinquish the search in the outer world; seek within, the core of happiness. Take refuge in your own Truth, in the Atma. Go to the centre of the cyclone, where calm prevails.
Q: But, that will deprive me of You…
A: I Am The Truth, the Core of your being. Bring Me, your deepest wounds, your unhealed scars, all that oppresses your being, all that hinders your progress. Look upon Me, as with form and as formless.
Q: I adore the Form and the Name.
A: The image your mind has made is of Me, in this Form and with this Name. But, this is a tiny fraction of My Reality. Your problem is `division’, this Form as different from other Forms, this Name as distinct from other Names. But, Truth is One, without a second. It admits of no partial allegiance, no part-time devotion, no half-hearted dedication.
Q: I wish to teach the West the vision of the East.
A: Let all else happen as it will. Do not try to change the ways of others. People are unteachable through words. If God wills that they learn by example, they will. But, at their own rate, in their own time. So, be an example; that is enough.

As Baba says, Naamasankeertana is the proven method
to attain self-motivation and spiritual guidance towards
the Supreme Power. For e.g. we have St. Thyagaraja.
Repeated chanting the Nama of the Lord and HIS glory
with devotion, sincerity, dedication and discipline both in
mind and body, the devotee is able to feel the peace
of mind. If one does it regularly for a couple of years, he/she
would be able to feel the need to surrender himself/herself
to the Supreme Power and proceed in the right path of Bakthi.
One can chant any number of times with no restriction. The
more one does, the more he/she is closer to the Supreme Power.
But one needs full dedication and devotion in HIM. In fact,
in all Pravachanams, it is mentioned that Namasmaranam is
the magic tool to attain the peace of mind.

There is a definition to the word Mantra i.e. man denotes
mind and thra denotes to deliver it with correct pronunciation.
Therefore, proper chanting of manthra can take a person
to the path of spirituality of mind. To be precise, if done with
full dedication and sincerity, the sound makes an echo in inner
self of a person. But while chanting, concentration on the
dedicated God is very essential.

That word means, according to most people, the final function; but it has a more profound meaning too.Samaapthi means the attainment (Aapthi) of the Samam(Divine or Brahman). That is the final fruit of Shravana, Manana and Nidhidhyasana (Listening, Recapitulation and Assimilation) of key spiritual truths and lessons from discourses. In the worldly sense, it means the conclusion of a period of time. In the spiritual sense, it means transcending time! The lesson that all spiritual discourses wish to convey is that you must give up your pursuit of sensory objects, if you seek lasting peace and joy. Material wealth brings along with it, not only joy but grief as well. Accumulation of riches, multiplication of wants will lead only to alternation between joy and grief. Attachment is the root of both joy and grief. Detachment is the saviour.

The whole world is very agitated and full of discontent, anxiety and fear; filled with petty faction and hatred. In order to calm and silence it, you must have enthusiasm and courage. When defeat and disappointment stare you in the face, you must not give way to weakness or despondency. Never condemn yourself as inferior or useless. Analyze the defeat and find out the reasons in order to avoid it the next time. You are not zeroes, you must become Heroes! You should have the muscles of iron and nerves of steel. Then your resolution itself will generate the necessary confidence and you will win over the opposition. For the crop of life, courage and confidence are the best pesticides and manure. Be like lions in the spiritual field, rule over the forest of senses and roam fearlessly with full faith in victory.

Peace and happiness depend on what lies within and not on outer skill or riches. Every being is fundamentally Divine and so, the more one manifests the divine attributes of Love, Justice, Truth and Peace, the more joy one shall be able to give and receive.

Sathya Sai Baba - Discourse, Aug 3, 1966

A thirsty passenger asked the water carrier at an up-country railway station in India whether the leather bag in which they were serving water was clean. The reply the passenger received was, “As regards cleanliness, all I can say is that the bag which contains the water is cleaner than the bag which takes it in!” This statement conveys an important lesson. You must care more for the cleanliness of your mind and intellect than that of the external body. Instead of criticising others and finding fault with the actions of others, subject yourself to vigilant scrutiny. Understand your motives and actions in a deep manner and invest time in correcting your own faults. Do not be like the dancer who blamed the drummer for the wrong steps.
