A thirsty passenger asked the water carrier at an up-country railway station in India whether the leather bag in which they were serving water was clean. The reply the passenger received was, “As regards cleanliness, all I can say is that the bag which contains the water is cleaner than the bag which takes it in!” This statement conveys an important lesson. You must care more for the cleanliness of your mind and intellect than that of the external body. Instead of criticising others and finding fault with the actions of others, subject yourself to vigilant scrutiny. Understand your motives and actions in a deep manner and invest time in correcting your own faults. Do not be like the dancer who blamed the drummer for the wrong steps.

As is mentioned above, the body is also required to be maintained
and proper attention is essential to ensure physical purity. However,
mental purity is absolutely essential so that the thought i.e. the right
thought is conceived. If there is a false belief about purity of physical
and mental, then the thoughts or desires that are generated would not be pure.
Hence every thought or action has to conform to the basic principles
of purity. In conclusion, everything has to be properly diagnosed by an
irresistible power which enters the mind and heart, so that negative
views are completely eliminated so as to conform towards positive views
only.

Foolishness, egoism and sheer ignorance are the root-causes of misery. The eye, the ear and the tongue lead people to anger and malice, instead of making them the messengers of peace and harmony. Intellect is the root of pride and envy. Lord Vishnu is called Lord Jagannatha at Puri. Lord Shiva is Vishweshwara, the Lord of Universe at Kashi. Vishnu is Gopal (protector of cows) and Shiva is Pashupathi (master of cows). Where is the room for rivalry between those who worship Shiva and Vishnu? Still the innate urge to fight comes up in the heart of people and they use the Names of the Lord as excuses for provoking the fights they relish. Stay away from these instincts.

When the child is born, he/she is shown the toys or playing materials. The
child grasped from the attraction understands the sense objects and starts
clinging on to them, and if it is not given it starts crying. As the time moves
on, when the child grows, it has more and more attachments. When they
become an infant, they find it difficult to withdraw from it. That becomes a
major problem in life. Hence, everyone has to develop a proper knowledge
and understanding of the sense objects and to act accordingly. Otherwise,
clinging on to them may lead to
worldly pleasures and comforts. As soon as
a child takes birth, he/she receives instruction and training either
from the mother or father or relatives. It gives temptations to new
ideas and thought processes. Thus the mind gets hanged on to
the things of desired and undesired. No doubt one has to have some
ideas and views. It is quite natural but one should understand the
fact of it and disapprove those things that are not essential to a person
when they get matured. Attachment to attractive and desirable objects is welcome.
But then one has to have a preconceived idea or view of the Supreme Power also
which facilitates one to see all these attractive items in life.

Selfishness does not mean to behave arrogant or become ignorant.
When elders tell something, one should listen to it and understand
the significance. One should not get motivated towards personal
happiness alone. Ignore the opinions of others and remain unkind or
uncooperative or self-absorbed are not a true quality. One should
understand ethics of sacrifice in life. Everyone has some responsibility
not only for his own life but also to the society in general. Each person
must understand the concept of living and try to love and respect his peers,
elders, etc. Friendship, love, charity, are some of the virtues one
should adopt in life and it should be part of his/her life. These values
do not require any sacrifice.

SWAMI'S LETTER TO A DEVOTEE

My dear children,

Life is so complicated. I can see that all of you are going through various stages. The awakenings are there. Remember something : enjoy every single second, but know your priorities. You can do everything in life. With good time management and love, you can achieve great feats. Make the most of your time. Do the things you want but also share the worlds of your friends, brothers and sisters. There are no such things such as my or your world. Know how each of you are and try to be one with each other. I am your Guru, Father and protector. I love you and I'll guide you. Remember that life is like a highway. There are all kinds of signs and indications which show you the ways. Many roads can lead to the same destination but when the roads cross, this is where the minds and worlds meet. Life is like the slopes of a mountain. You always climb up, but sometimes you may fall. But always remember that you've got the power to stand up on your feet again.

Towards destination

GOD'S GUIDANCE
Love and Protection

SAI

Clean the chimney by namasmarana(repetition of the Lord’s name) every day and the flame will shine for you and others. Also do good deeds and be in good company. Proper atmosphere is very essential for the development of a spiritual aspirant. That is why spiritual seekers in the past left their homes and lived in the hermitages maintained by the sages. This is akin to keeping a pot of water immersed in water. That way, the water in the pot will then not be lost through evaporation. Therefore be careful, that the success you have won in the promotion of virtue, in the conquest of baneful habits and in the assumption of regular disciplines, are not frittered away by trite company, loose talk, cynical criticism or lackadaisical effort.

You must have read in “Sathyam Sivam Sundaram" the thrilling story of Baba's visit to Hampi Hospet etc at the age of 14 and on His return, the epoch-making announcement, that He belonged to His devotees and that His work beckoned Him. You must have read of the First Bhajan in the garden of the Excise Inspector's bungalow, which I too attended. I was excited and thrilled beyond words for I did not consider that Sathya was my `student'; He was my Guru, my Guide. I shall now share with you some of the experiences that the members of my family had experienced 23 years ago. (the article dates back to June 1963)
Baba was present at the Uravakonda Bhajan sessions, every Thursday evening, when hundreds used to gather to take His blessings. Once when He went to Puttaparthi from there, He took me, my wife and my son as far as Anantapur and we were with Him there for two days, after which He left for the village, and we returned. We used to worship Baba, installing Him, in imagination, on the Pita (Seat Of Divine) which Baba had asked us to place in the shrine room. One day, while my wife was immersed in bhajan, with tears of joy streaming down her face, a big sized bumble-bee zoomed in circular sweeps and dropped on her head, while flying through the window, a roll of paper! We found that it was a picture of Shirdi Sai Baba! Surely, it was a gift from Sathya Sai!... for our shrine.
Another day during the bhajan, Baba called the wife of Kasibhatla Sriramamurthy to the dais and told her, "I have just kept a picture in your shrine room for Puja; why is it you have no Picture there? Go and worship It." She was surprised that this `little boy' knew the details of the room so well and that Baba had shown them His grace. Immediately, she hurried home with three other women; they opened the lock and went in; the doors and windows were all closed for fear of monkeys; they threw them open one by one. Yes; there was a picture on the floor of the shrine, a picture of Shirdi Sai Baba!
Even more wonderful is another incident which I clearly recall. Baba was then at Puttaparthi, far away from Uravakonda. We were engaged in bhajan, as usual in our little house; it was a rather a hurried bhajan, for it was a working day for the school and we teachers could not afford to go late! A monkey leaped on to the window and held fast the iron bars and grinned. We tried to shoo him off; he threw a tiny bundle of cloth into the room, and waited to note our reactions. Baba, the Divine Boy, had taught us to live in an age of miracles. So, I took the bundle and with shivering hands, untied the knot and lo!... There was a laddu (!) in it. Have you ever heard of a monkey delivering a packet of 'laddu', unopened?
And, lo! there was also a letter... from Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba... in His own lovely handwriting!! "I sent you a picture with a bee. I am glad you are worshipping it sincerely. Well, I Am sending you now some Prasadam. Share it with all and be happy."
Must I add that I could not attend school that day? The joy was so over-powering. His grace was so overwhelming.

How to let go of attachments?

Swami
: How are you binding to them? Same way, you let them go. Imagine a cloth - First there is cotton. Then the cotton is made into thread and finally cloth is made of bundle of threads. Remove each thread and at the end there is no cloth. You are not one person but three: the one you think you are; the one others think you are; the one you really are. Less luggage, more comfort, therefore more pleasure.

With desire = Attachment; Without desire = Detachment Marriage is a mirage. It is a form of bondage: First you have two legs, you get married and now there are 4 legs; then you have a child and now there are 6 legs and so on. Bondage is attachment.

THE SOURCE... HIS LOVE

God’s heart can be won when one’s love is completely sincere for Him. As one slowly eliminates the doubts that one has for his own Self, it is then that one begins to see the reality of one’s soul i.e. the atma which is imperishable... indestructible... and indivisible.

To eliminate doubts one has to closely observe the working of one’s own mind. The mind is like a wheel that begins at a point, moves all along the circumference, and after the whole circle returns to the initial point... the source... from which it began its journey. That is simply the nature of the mind. The mind cannot be controlled, however the mind can be trained to remain still. Such a mind begins at its source and even though it moves around the circumference in order to complete its task it is always focused even while turning its round at its source.

And what is this source that stills and focuses the mind even while in movement? The source, My dear, is love... pure... unconditional love... There is no one that has not experienced love in his life... How much love is experienced by one... that much only one will be able to understand the truth of one’s Self. How much one understands one’s own Self, that much he will realize the presence and love of God that is within. That understanding is limited and these limitations create a different aura of impressions resulting in the birth of an individualized mind... and these minds in return according to their limitations give rise to different characteristics (gunas)...

The mind... the characteristics... and one’s attachment to both, the mind and the characteristics, gives rise to an individual personality. In reality, the core of our being, no matter what the personality, is the same, i.e. love. However, the outside shell of the personality creates a delusion of being separate. The core of every being, hence, is Divine (pure unconditional love).

A human being is God disguised in the cloak of the body, mind, intellect and senses. This cloak together compromises the ego... the little self...(conditional love)

The mind is a web of thoughts... Then what are thoughts? When love deviates from its nature even slightly then a thought is born. A thought is an indication that one has deviated from his true nature i.e. pure, unconditional love.

The true nature of one’s Self is always to return to its source (love). Hence ,even if one thought is born, its vibrational energy immediately tries to give birth to another thought in order to eliminate the first. If one fails in this process, one uses the energy of the source to keep making more thoughts only in order to return to its state of origin which is love. When the mind is most still it creates the most intense work that emanates divinity. When the mind is in motion it creates work that has limitations and that work results in more thought ultimately resulting in the fear of that work.

One in life is faced with many duties. Depending upon how much one receives from the duty, it is that much that one gets attached to it. The likes and dislikes... gives rise to fears and doubts and unknowingly one performs one’s duty in the absence of love (pure) and in the presence of thoughts (conditional love). Again one becomes attached to the limitations of one’s love and considers that alone to be pure love.

The more one gets blinded... the more one gets fearful of how much he has deviated from pure love. And as this fear grows, one becomes defiant to his own Self and he denies his own true nature of his source (pure love).

One, in frustration, begins to control his mind with the fear of not thinking. The more he fears not to think the more he thinks and fears.

Simple spiritual disciplines (sadhanas) can be kept within one’s mind constantly. Practice of such simple spiritual disciplines shall root one’s faith deeply in God and shall help one to return to the source and its stillness.

If you quarrel with your spouse and desist from food for a day, that does not count as fasting in the book of God. Also praising one God as great and decrying another is incorrect. Any of these acts reflect the fact that you are unaware of the elementary rules of spiritual discipline. Dhana (wealth) is the currency of the world. Sadhana (Spiritual Practice) is the currency of the spirit. Be an example to others through your conduct - sweet speech, humility, reverence to elders and steadfastness in truth and faith. This way you will influence more people into practicing spirituality; it is better than establishing societies, collecting donations or running temples. Today the moon shines bright, cool and full, without any hindrance. The mind of a human is compared to the moon, for it is as wayward as the moon with its swing from brightness to darkness. Your mind must be bright, effulgent and cool always. Two statements give you the gist of all the eighteen Puranas composed by sage Vyaasa. “Do good to others; avoid doing harm". These are the cure for the disease of suffering from joy and grief, honour and dishonour, prosperity and adversity, and all the dual throng that bother you and deprive you of equanimity. Follow the path shown by your Guru. Even Vyaasa can only show you the road. You have to traverse it alone.
