Sadhana is a primary thing to attain the Divine Power. One has to have complete
and full sincerity in one's approach and willing to undertake any assignment as guided
by the Guru to proceed in the right path. This approach and attitude would enable
us not only to fetch happiness and also develop a sort of contentment. Unless
a person develops a proper attitude in spiritual life one would not be able to learn
things enabling to fetch the blessings of the Supreme Power. If there is any lapse,
one should understand and take it in the right spirit based on the advice of the Guru.
Initial stages, there may be some lapses and they need to be corrected in the subsequent
steps. One should not worry or concentrate on the past events, rather work on the
present. The Supreme Power gives ample opportunities to us to develop certain
spiritual qualities and attitudes in life which should be preserved and maintained.
One should not entertain negative thoughts. Nor offer negative suggestions to others
too. Humility is a virtue that develops a good system in us.

The gods once imagined that they were able to get victory over the demons because of their own prowess. When they were celebrating the victory, a deity appeared before them and cast a blade of grass on the ground. It asked Agni (God of fire) to burn it; but he could not. It challenged Vayu (God of Air) to lift it, but he could not. It provoked Varuna (God of Water) to wet it, but, in spite of his best efforts, he could not. Then when their pride had been pricked, the deity taught them the Brahma Vidya (science of Brahman), which reveals the inner source of all strength. This is no ordinary story; Agni is the presiding deity of vaak (speech) and so it tells us that speech has to be humble, that it derives its power only from the basic Universal Principle. Vaayu is prana (the vital air). Humility in behaviour and practice are all that count, especially in Sadhana.

Arjuna’s dejection was a case of finely disguised egoism. He was a hero until he came to the battlefield and became a coward. It was all about ‘I and Mine’; “I will go to hell, I would rather beg, I will not fight my uncle, myGuru, my cousin, etc.” ‘I and mine’ are two poison fangs; they have to be removed to make you harmless. Krishna counselled Arjuna: “You are not killing, so don’t be conceited, they are deathless; the death sentence on their bodies has already been pronounced and you are merely executing God’s will!” Krishna made Arjuna aware of himself and removed his delusions. Arjuna realized that he was but an instrument in the hands of the Lord. You too must learn from that lesson, for otherwise, there will be no end to your misery. Always pray Thamaso maajyothirgamaya - Lead me from darkness to light. Egoism is darkness (thamas); Surrender (Sharanagathi) is light.

Baba: Do not spend your time thinking about the world or your relationships to individuals. These are all impermanent. They have only to do with the body. The body is just a water bubble. The mind is like a mad monkey. Do not follow either the body or the mind. Follow the Self, the Atma. It is beyond the mind. It is permanent. The chief source of bliss is dedication to God. Nothing else can give that genuine and everlasting joy. Become conscious of your kinship with the Lord - it is not mere folklore or a fairy tale or a faked theory. This kinship has existed from the beginning of Time and will persist till the very end of Time. Every individual is born in the path of righteousness (Dharma Marga), journeys through the path of action (Karma Marga), rushes through the path of sages (Sadhu Marga) to reach the Supreme Reality (Brahma Marga). The path of action and the path of the Sages are illumined by the Jnanendriyas (organs of perception). Keep the Jnanendriyas and the Karmendriyas (sense organs) uncontaminated and pure. The cow eats grass and drinks gruel and gives sweet, sustaining milk. So too, let the experiences you gather through the organs, help in the production of sweetness and kindness. With pure devotion, lead your lives in peace and bliss.

Key points for a person:
Prayer without devotion does not bring peace of mind. Association with Satsangam is very essential to learn many things in life. If a person remembers the Supreme Power always and chants His Nama is really very fortunate in life. The devotee of the Supreme Power will be fortunate to be free from worry or sorrows and he will
enjoy peace. One can whisper the Nama of Supreme Power in silence and realise the power. Once a person understands the value of Supreme Power, his ignorance gets eliminated. Spiritual culture and ethical education are yet another important virtues that one should develop. Everyone should have a clear understanding of the purpose of life. If one joins a Satsang, he or she gets the necessary spiritual training and ethical culture in life.

Dear ones, starting today, light a candle/lamp, sit alone or with loved ones and chant aloud ‘Samastha Lokaah Sukhino Bhavantu’… ‘Samastha Jeeva Sukhino Bhavantu’…a minimum of 21 times…or as many times as your inner self guides you to… and while doing so, with the intent of harmony…visualize the region facing this colossal catastrophe being bathed in love and grace divine.

Oh! Beloved Mother Sai…Most Loving Compassionate Lord, Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba…may serenity, calm and tranquility be soon restored in Garhwal Himalaya…so also to every suffering heart and each anguished soul.

God does not want the flower or fruit that you can buy in the street. Instead, bring to Him the fragrant flower of a pure heart and the fruit of your mind, mellowed from spiritual practices (Sadhana). Those items that you buy do not elevate your mind – however, your spiritual practices will do it for you! By whatever means that is available to you, increase your stock of bliss and improve your discrimination. Try to store as many of these as possible, so that you draw up from the reservoir of your storage, whenever the need arises.

On October 23, 1963, I developed a small ulcer on the underside of my tongue, at the tip, on the right half. It spread rapidly backwards causing severe pain, shooting terribly into the right ear and the right eye. The ulcer spread quickly to the gums round my teeth, both in the upper and the lower jaws on the right side. The inside of the cheek was also ulcerated. There were blisters on the right cheek, the outer side. Within 4 days, I was shouting on account of the unbearable pain.
My condition became so serious that I had to be admitted in the Bala Ram Hospital on the 27th, as an emergent case. The doctors diagnosed it as a case of Herpes Zoster, involving the second and third division of the trigeminal nerve. Medicines were administered orally and through intramuscular injections.
All the while, I was praying to Bhagawan, Who had blessed me when He had come to Lucknow. He is My Lord, My Saviour.
On October 29th, I became so desperate with the excruciating agony that I prayed to Baba with great anguish at about 9 pm either to relieve my pain or end the agony forever.
At about 12 midnight, when I was in a half-dazed condition, I suddenly felt that Baba came to my bedside and drew a sharp knife across my tongue. No body had come in, we had bolted all doors before retiring. But, still, I saw Him clearly and the knife was drawn. I felt a sudden relief from the pain. It had gone completely!
The doctors were surprised that the pain had vanished and the ulcer was well on the way to cure. Baba had responded to my prayer; He had operated over my tongue! And…not a drop of blood!
He gave me relief and a fresh lease of life, to keep on praying to Him. Pray to Him ever, dear friends, for His grace!

The patient who desires to improve must have faith in the doctor and carry out the instructions. Unless you have obeyed the orders of the doctor strictly and to the very letter, you have no authority to pronounce judgement on the doctor. Also remember that the doctor’s treatment will vary with each patient – it will depend upon the ailment, the age, the virulence of the disease and the treatment already undertaken. Apart from the prescription, one has to also adhere to the dietary and other regulations that the doctor recommends. That is to say, it is not merely practices likejapam and dhyanam (Remembering God’s name and meditation) that will have to be done, but in order to supplement the effect of these, you have to lead a regulated life, a life conducive to good thoughts, with Sathwik (virtuous) food and pursuits.

It is only through action that devotion can be deepened. Action cleanses the mind and makes it fit for spiritual knowledge. Merely listening to noble thoughts (sravanam) is a thaamasik act. Recapitulation (manana) is Rajasik and complete assimilation (nidhidhyasana) is Saathwik. When you are simply listening, quietly receiving without reflecting or responding, you are dull (thaamasik). When you turn the thought over in your mind, attempting to assimilate it, then you are active (rajasik), and when you are sunk in the sweetness of experience, you enjoy pure exultation (sathwik). That Nidhidhyasana is the fruit of devotion. To overcome obstacles in the spiritual path, you must have both,Sadhana and Sankalpa – Self-effort and Divine Grace.

As Baba says, our activities have to be towards spiritual growth.
Joining a Satsangh, one can have a joint study of the teachings of
Baba besides one can do devotional singing along with those present.
Spiritual meditation and service to the Satsangh could be a major
activity.

This day, you may feel you have no need of the Lord, but remember, when the pangs of hunger gnaw, you start pining for food. Therefore, wash your hearts with tears of joy so that the Lord might install Himself therein. A zamindar may own all of the fields up to the very horizon on all sides, but he will choose to sit only on a patch that is clean! In the same way, when the Lord chooses the heart of a devotee, it does not mean that all other hearts are not His. They are only not clean enough. He is everywhere, everything is His, His gaze is on all. If God was not all this, how could they shine, or exist even as much as they do now? Therefore, have full faith in God and in yourselves, engage always in good deeds and beneficial activities; speak the truth, do not inflict pain by word or deed or even thought. That is the way to gain peace; that is the highest merit which you can earn in this life.

One should not think of high himself or herself than one should but
cultivate a habit of humility and soberly. Faith is always expressed
by a devotee through his/her actions/deeds and not just by mere thought
process. One should spend some time each day towards prayer and
meditation. Praying and meditating regularly brings the confidence and
faith in God and one starts worshiping praising the Lord. If one has
negative thinking, then it becomes difficult to get out of that. Everyone
know that one cannot see the sun when it is enveloped by clouds, though
the sun remains underneath. Similarly, we do not see the stars in the daytime,
because of brightness of the Sun, despite the fact that the stars are there
in the sky. One may feel that one is not able to see the God with physical eyes,
one can certainly infer that the Supreme Power is hidden behind these names
of Lord Krishna or Lord Rama or Lord Vishnu or in the forms of God and Goddesses.
Are we able to see the mind that is hidden in the brain!!
