The Divine Stories: The Early Days 9. (Releasing bad spirits)

People believed that spirits could take over the body of a living person and change them completely. Puttaparthi and the surrounding areas were full of sorcerers and people felt black magic would cause harm to people.

While in the Mandir, Swami healed many people who were so possessed. Swami explained: "When people died in unnatural deaths their souls hover trying to find a body. In that process they sometimes occupy the body of weak minded people".

Many such people came to the Old Mandir. Swami would have a remedy for each such person. In some cases Swami took a stick and would thrash the person, thus commanding the spirit to leave. Devotees could hear strange voices replying to Swami's questions. As soon as the conversation ended Swami would break the stick. He would say that the spirit had gone and would not come back again. In some cases the spirits were devotees of Narasimha or Anjaneya. Swami would ask them to sings the glories of those Gods and the spirits would have vanished. The people so healed would suddenly look hale and hearty.

But it is the incident of the fat lady that devotees like to talk about

Once a fat lady came to the Old Mandir. The bhajan was going on. Suddenly this lady started to sing in a strange tone which was not her own. Swami looked at her and said, "Either you keep quiet or get out of her". She started arguing with Swami. The tone of the voice would suddenly change. The bhajan ended. The devotees were having food and the lady suddenly changed her tone once again and said, "I want to have food with Swami".

"You are unfit to be here, Get out" said Swami. Then Swami asked everybody to clear the room and asked them to bring some saffron rice (Akshatha) from the Pooja room. He sprinkled a little on the lady. Then Swami suddenly held her up holding a small strand of her hair. It was astonishing...a 250 pound lady being lifted like a straw in the air. He lifted her, and swung her around in a circle like a toy and threw her on the floor. He just pulled out the small bunch of her hair which He was holding while and she fainted. He tied the hair in a knot and waited for her to regain consciousness. She was perfectly normal after that.

There was an another incident which occurred on the sands of the Chitrvathi. Swami liked swings (Jhoola). Devotees would tie long ropes with a wooden plank to make a swing. When sits in this jhoola, they would grntly push the swing. They felt great joy in doing so. This used to happen almost every evening, whenever Swami took devotees to Chitrvathi. On one such occasion, Swami was sitting on the swing and the devotees were pushing forward and backward.. The jhoola was swinging faster and faster, and it went up higher and higher. The devotees started getting worried.

"Push higher and higher", Swami urged. The devotees started getting anxious. At a point of time he seemed to touch the sky. Suddenly with a loud crack the wooden plank broke and fell on the floor. The devotees were panicked, not knowing the where about of Swami. Suddenly Swami appeared behind them with a big smile. Now everyone knew what had actually happened.......the wooden plank was seen much bigger than what they had actually made.

So what was it? :

Swami calmly explained that there was a spirit possessing the wooden Plank. Now that the plank had been broken, the spirit had been released !!!!

Sheaths Within Sheaths

Swami tells us that it is only in the depths of silence that the voice of God can be heard

There is another story that speaks of this profound silence that is the Divinity. Rama, Sita and Lakshmana, while in the forest, came into an Ashram where there were many rishis and their wives assembled. Rama and Lakshmana joined the men, Sita sat with the ladies. As all the men were sanyasins, they all looked pretty much the same. Even Rama and Lakshmana wore the same simple bark dress as these forest dwellers, and they had their hair in matted locks, as did most of the men there. Sita was of a royal family, brought up in a secluded atmosphere; she was the very embodiment of modesty and morality. In the presence of these sages, Sita bowed her head in humility and did not look up.

One of the rishis’ wives asked Sita, “Did you come alone or with your husband?” Sita indicated that her husband was there and that he was seated among the sanyasins; then she remained silent. When Sita gave no further information, the lady asked her, “Is that one with the knot of hair on his head your husband?” Sita only moved her head a little from side to side to intimate that, no, that was not her husband. “Then is it the one with the long beard?” Again Sita discretely motioned her head to indicate a negative answer. “Is it the one with the long whiskers?” Again a negative movement of the head. “Is it the one with the long nails?” One by one, she was saying ‘no’ with a little movement of her head. When finally the question clearly pointed to Rama, the splendorous one with the bow and the blue skin, Sita remained motionless and silent. Paramatma can be known only in silence.

We are born as human beings. Are we the body? Are we the life-force? Are we the mind? Are we the intelligence? Swami reminds us of the Vedantic answer, ‘Not this, not this, not this.’ When every question, one after the other, has been answered like this in the negative, then at the end one last question alone remains, ‘Are we the Atma?’ Then there will be no answer, only the silent recognition of the great truth. So, the meaning of Sita’s response, Swami says, is to reveal the True Self; and when that Atmic Truth was pointed out she confirmed it by answering ‘yes’ through her silence.

Swami often speaks of the five sheaths, each of which is successively more subtle, fitting one within the other:

First, there is the Annamaya or food sheath, the most outward sheath, which makes up the grossest aspect of the being and relates to the physical body.

Secondly, there is the Pranamaya or vital sheath, sometimes also called the astral body, which accounts for the coursing of the life energy and makes up the densest part of the subtle body of the being.

Thirdly, there is the Manomaya or mental sheath which is associated with the projecting power of the mind, and is also included in the subtle body of the being.

Fourthly, there is the Vignanamaya or the intellectual sheath, associated with the Buddhi, the intuitive and deliberating faculty, and which makes up the finest aspect of the subtle body.

Fifthly, there is the Anandamaya or bliss sheath, the most subtle aspect of being, which makes up the causal body and is associated with the veiling power of the mind.

The gross, the subtle and the causal bodies, made up of these five sheaths, are each associated with one of the three states of consciousness, the waking, the dream and the deep sleep states. They also correspond to each of the three letters making up the AUM, the primal sound, out of which the mind has projected the universe. All these sheaths within sheaths, make up the Upadhis, the limiting physical and mental equipment of the individual soul, the Jiva. They also make up the physical and subtle aspects of the world. They are the stuff of Maya, the illusory fabrications of the illusory mind. Beyond all these is the basis for all these; that is what is called the fourth, the Turiya, and what is also called the Mahakarana, the primal cause. It is the Atmic Principle which is the one true reality… the one unchanging existence on which all these illusory projections come and go.

The five sheaths making up the three states of experience, the five gross and subtle elements, the five senses of perception, the three gunas, and the various aspects of mind, are all different ways of speaking of Maya, and different ways of accounting for the grand illusion of names and forms that make up the multitude of beings and things in the world. Maya is another name for mind, which in turn is born of ignorance. Vedanta teaches us that ignorance is the grand delusion that gives rise to the grand illusion of world. All the names and forms making up this illusion of world, play on their basis, the infinite ocean of Sat-chit-ananda, just like the ever-changing waves and bubbles play on the surface of the deep unchanging sea.

The story of Shiva and Parvarti, as also the wonderful story of the enlightenment of Brighu, which is given in the Taittariya Upanishad, illustrate the successive removal of these sheaths, one overlaying the other, as soon as the spiritual aspirant is ready for the highest wisdom. The presence of the guru catalyzes this process of penetrating deeper and deeper through one’s levels of illusion, until one reaches the very source, the unchanging truth of the Self. In the story given, the clear, pure breath was associated with the vital plane, the beautiful image of the Lord was associated with the purified mental plane, the splendorous light was associated with the effulgent Sun of the Gayatri, which wakes up the intuitive intellect, and is related to the plane of Buddhi, and the OM, the pure sound of creation was associated with the causal plane. Beyond all these is the silence of reality, the eternal Divine Principle, the Immortal Self.

When the sishya, the student, is ready for the final beatitude, the guru instructs him to search out That which, when known, all else will be known… That, by which all is seen but which itself can never be seen… That, by which all is heard but which itself can never be heard… That, out of which everything arises, in which everything exists, and into which everything again dissolves. As he discovers for himself these layers within layers, the guru urges him to go on, not to remain stuck in any place, but to go deeper and deeper.

When all the sheaths are stripped away the answer reveals itself in the silence of reality. The guru doesn’t instruct on what truth is; he points out what is not truth, and goads the sishya on. If the sishya bogs down at some level and strays away, the guru will seek him out to keep him moving on the path, until he reaches the highest wisdom.

What exactly Spirituality means?

1176143_518386334917176_500726567_n.jpg

We all have spirits. These bodies are temples of our spirits. Those who choose to humble themselves before the Lord and strive to act as His will, are able to communicate or be taught and gain wisdom, knowledge and understanding through the Divine Spirit. Spirituality means bringing in awareness of self. To know who we are, why we are and where we are in this Journey of Spiritual Evolution.

Spirituality challenges old beliefs and begs for new. Spirituality is connecting to self and others on a deeper level of understanding. It’s a medium to connect you with Divine. Change is the core of spirituality and knowing self is becoming a part of that change. Spirituality also means Saadhana or Penance. We may take penance as a big thing but worshiping our beloved is not a difficult task at all. Whoever want to walk on spiritual path through worship of their beloved Lord, could achieve God in an easy way. Swami has said that:

“I do not need your garlands and fruits. They are not genuinely yours. Give me something that is yours, something which is clean and fragrant with the perfume of virtue and innocence and washed in the tears of repentance.

Mere formal worship or mechanical routine performance of rituals cannot induce God to recite in the heart.

Merely going to the temple and offering worship offering a coconut, expecting some reward — all these are a wrong way of understanding devotion.

Devotion is the state of mind in which one has no separate existence apart from God. Devotion has to be unintermittent, uninterrupted, like the flow of oil from one vessel to another. All spiritual practice must be directed to the removal of the husk and the revelation of the kernel. Spiritual progress is right living, good conduct, moral behavior.” - Baba.

Spiritual practice purely depends on faith, hope, and love towards the
Supreme Power. If one gets an awareness of spiritual activities,
one can experiences pleasure in abundance. Besides one can achieve
mental satisfaction. Spirituality has to form an integral part of one's life.
Spiritual practice is a vast area and it may take time to find answers
to one's questions. An apt and knowledgeable spiritual Guru can make
the path of spirituality less cumbersome and he/she can guide the
disciple without any difficulty retaining confidence in the disciple
throughout the spiritual journey

Be careful to not engage yourself in Iccha Krishi (the cultivation of wants and desires). This is a never ending process of sowing and reaping, you will never reach contentment. For, one desire, when satisfied will fan the thirst for ten more. Be warned! Do not run after devious desires or crooked satisfactions. All roads leading to the realm of the senses are tortuous and blind. Only the road that leads to God is straight. Cultivate straightforwardness (Neethi) in your every act. That will reveal the Divine in due course. It will also enable you to overcome your three Gunas (Rajas, Sathwa and Tamo). Just as you grind chilly, salt and tamarind to get a tasty dish, you must grind all the three Gunas so that the taste of Ananda (bliss) emerges.

Dr Ian Gawler, Australia's most famous cancer survivor and founder of the Gawler Foundation

Below is an excerpt from the book "Grace, Grit and Gratitude" by Grace Gawler, Ian Gawler's first wife of the account of their first meeting with Sathya Sai Baba and the Cancer Cure...

After several hours of disciplined waiting in the hot sun, Sai Baba appeared at the entrance to the building. He slowly glided by the adoring crowd, bare footed, serene, present and graceful with every foot fall, stopping occasionally and gesturing with an upward majestic inflection of his right hand, as if to read the ethers. Whatever he was doing and whoever he was, I knew that I was in the presence of someone extraordinary!

He stopped and gave a sweeping glance in front of Ian who was sitting three rows back from the front. With a direct gaze, he asked in English, "Why have you come?"

Ian mumbled an answer, inaudible from where I was sitting. Sai Baba was silent for a short moment and then said, "You come", indicating to Ian, by way of a hand gesture that pointed towards the entrance to the building.

We were usherd into a narrow rectangular room just inside the entrance, where we were patiently waiting with an Indian family of five, and an Indian businessman, the only ones selected to be "interviewed" that day.

The room was cool and a strong perfume of incense lingered in the air. At first, he spoke with the family, then the businessman, and then us. He stood in front of Ian, very close; and after a long and searching look he simply said, "You are already cured, don't worry".

Sai Baba's so-called miracles have been controversial, even questionable; however, my experience was what it was - inexplicable. Simply because we can not see something with our eyes, does not mean it does not exist - spontaneous, personal experiences can not be replicated, which makes investigation into miracles impossible.

Mayavaram Krishnamurthy Thyagaraja Bhagavathar (1 March 1910 – 1 November 1959), also called M.K.T., was a Tamil film actor, producer and Carnatic music singer. He is considered to be one of the most successful Tamil film actors ever.

MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar's experience with Bhagawan Baba :))

Maharaja Yeshwant Rao Ghorpade and Queen of Sandur receiving Sathya Sai Baba at Sandur Palace by washing HIS Feet --- 19 June 1948 :))

386444_10150390729976677_808150589_n.jpg

Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba had visited the State of Sandur in 1947 for the first time. Ever since that visit the head of the State, Maharaja Yeshwant Rao Ghorpade and the people have been the recipients of Baba' s oceanic compassion and protective grace. In 1949 when the Maharaja had to give up the rulership of his state, he was very disappointed and depressed. He came to Puttaparthi to seek guidance. At that time Baba had encouraged him and assuring him, said that the Maharaja had nothing to despair as he would establish an estate even bigger than Sandur. True! This did happen. On 9th March ,1974, Baba visited Sandur for the second time with a party which included Indra Devi, the famous Russian born American who runs a Yoga Ashram ‘SAI NILAYAM~ at Tecate, Mexico and has as many publlcations on yoga to her credit and who is acclaimed in America as the Lady of Yoga.

Devotees of Sathya Sai Baba will remember a kind, old lady dressed in white, collecting footwear from fellow devotees or sweeping the premises at Sundaram in Chennai or Prashanthi Nilayam in Puttaparthi. She was an active member of the Seva Dal, a service brigade. She never let her celebrity status come in the way of her desire to serve humanity.

If you can develop the inner poise or equilibrium that is undisturbed by the ups and downs every day presents to you, that is a sure sign of real success! Everyday is similar to the previous days, with the rising and setting of the Sun and the waxing and the waning of the Moon. However, when 365 days are over, we call it a New Year and give it a new name and number. The Sun and the Moon mark ascend and descend of the day. They are however, unaffected by the name or the number for the day or the year. Be like the Sun and the Moon. Moral attributes are important for everyone. In fact one should get
delighted to know the justice and righteousness in life. Generally, we
notice wise people boasting about their knowledge, intelligence and
wisdom, a strong man boasts of his muscle power and strength while
the rich person boasts about his richness. But everyone should understand
the righteousness and accordingly exercise kindness towards fellow human
beings and others in the Society. One should feel that everyone on this
earth is equal. Everyone should have a quest for the Supreme Power as one
has thirst for water. One cannot live without water, air or food. It is hence
to know the feeling of existence of Supreme Power is also a quest.

Teaching is the process in which the teacher and the taught cooperate, a pleasant and useful experience for both. When teachers enter the classroom, children salute them; that is a lesson in humility, in respecting age and scholarship, and in gratitude for the service rendered. The teachers too, should decide to deserve the salutation through their sincere efforts and selfless service. Move the students through your love. Do not win the respect of the student through fear. Education is a slow process, like the unfolding of a flower, the fragrance becoming deeper and more perceptible as the flower silently blossoms, one petal at a time. The unfolding will be helped if the teacher is a fine example of discrimination, humility and clear-sightedness, rather than a person engaged in the task of mere repetitive teaching and coaching for examinations. Example, not precept, is the best teaching aid.

In His message to us, our beloved Lord Sathya Sai tells those who have not found Him yet: "Take one step towards Me and I will take ten towards you". I would like to tell you about exactly such a case which I witnessed during my November trip to Puttaparthi.

It was not my first meeting with The Lord. Life in this world, especially business life in the difficult situation that we find ourselves in Russia now, imposes such cares, trials and tribulations that one can be released from them only by physically coming to Bhagawan Sathya Sai and delving into the spiritual environment that one can find only in the Prasanthi Nilayam Ashram.

It happened that this time I had to go from St. Petersburg on my own and I thought that at least one of my Moscow friends might like to join me. None of them yet realised the importance of the fact that it was high time to step out on the spiritual path, though all of them heard, mainly from me, about the phenomenal occurrence in the history of humanity - the embodiment of God on Earth in the form of a man, Whose Name is Sri Sathya Sai Baba.

My closest Moscow friend (I'll call him 'M’) heard rather much from me about The Lord. Nearly every time returning from India I would visit "M" at his home and tell him of my fresh impressions about the journey, leaving some books in Russian about Sathya Sai Baba. However he would listen politely but do nothing else: he did not show any interest and did not read a single book. I could not understand it knowing that "M" was an educated man with a subtle critical mind. He was a rather well known scientist and achieved nearly all-scientific titles: doctor of technical sciences, professor, inventor emeritus of the State, State Prize-winner.

He knew me since we were students and could be sure that I would not say anything that was not true or overstate facts. From my information "M" knew about the fascinating cases demonstrated by Swami especially as I myself was a witness to some of them during three interviews. It was evident that phenomena that cannot be explained from the point of view of this world were taking place in Prasanthi Nilayam. These were not in accordance with the known laws of physics, chemistry etc.

At the present moment my friend has serious life problems: like many scientists in Russia, he lost his permanent job; his health is far from perfect; he has harmful habits; smoking, drinking for several years. All that had a harmful effect on his health and state of mind; he was unusually in a depressed mood; he knew that ahead of him was old age with all its difficulties, illness, deterioration, loss of close friends. That is why I tried so hard to help him to discover for himself Sathya Sai Baba.
We are so lucky we live in the same time as He.

Our country has become democratic enough for us to be able to go and see the Lord for ourselves and, if lucky, to have His interview. I thought it would be a great loss for anyone to miss such an opportunity.

Now, before going to India, I rang my Moscow friends, offering them an opportunity to go with me for 2 - 3 weeks; but all of them including my friend "M" politely refused my offer pleading they were too busy etc. I was surprised, but suddenly "M" rang me up saying that after talking it over with his wife he decided to go in spite of his financial difficulties. He told me later he persuaded his wife saying that possibly, after this trip he might stop drinking.

His calculations showed that if he gave up drinking for half-a-year this would cover the cost of this trip to India. I had explained to him no one was allowed to drink or smoke, or eat meat or fish in Prasanthi Nilayam. He agreed to obey these rules but would not read books about Sathya Sai.

We were given a room with all conveniences; besides us there were two young men: a Japanese from Osaka and a German from Berlin. On the second day of our stay in the Ashram I gave my friend three of the last editions of the quarterly magazine "Divine Love" my Sai friend Sophia gave me when she learned "M" had not read anything about Sai Baba yet. On the third day before going to bed my friend at last opened one of the quarterlies and started looking through.

He would choose only those pages where Swami Himself speaks, and being transfixed, continued reading through the night in the bathroom, so that the rest of us could sleep undisturbed (after 9 o' clock people in the Ashram are supposed to go to bed).

Next morning at darshan I got the second row and managed to keep a place behind me for my friend. Usually it is not allowed and a Sevadal on duty did not like it but I managed to persuade him. "M" came half-an-hour before darshan when the first ten rows were filled, but seeing me he successfully got through to the third row.

At darshan Swami passing us made a sign with His hand three times looking straight at "M" and me. First I thought it was for me and understood it as a blessing. It made me very happy as any look or sign of attention from Swami is very exciting and pleasant for us all. After darshan my friend took me aside and started with great excitement telling me that last night he saw Swami in his dream and spoke with Him. This was a very unusual dream, he could see everything very clearly and remember everything as if it was real. "M" was very agitated and confused; he could not understand wheth er it was a usual dream cast by what he had read or it was something he could not fully comprehend.

Below is the dialogue between him and Swami as related by "M". Swami was sitting at the rostrum in an auditorium where "M" usually delivers lectures for students, and he was sitting opposite Swami at a table like a student.

Swami: "You wanted an interview - you will have it now. You always liked double lectures (2 x 45 min without a break): you will now have such a period yourself. You may ask Me questions".
"M": "Not everything is clear in religions. They divide.”

Swami: "All religions were written for the time when people were primitive and so they were expounded in the language and concepts of that period. A blind belief and miracles were required. Look at Moses who was taking Jews from Egypt showing miracles. Each time requires its form. Temples were constructed but the real temple must be in one's soul.

You did not want to read books about Me, but you studied mathematics: first 2 x 2, then further, then physics. From the simple to the complex, but all the knowledge is held up by the highest knowledge that is God. Gradually one goes from intellect to spirituality; one needs intellect to live in this world. You started reading about Me for the sake of your friend. Your friend is My channel. He brought you here and did it selflessly.

Do not worry about material things - you have a good intellect. Just imagine that man's life in a cosmic scale lasts only one hundredth part of a second, s o what difference does it make where you live: in a palace or in a hut?"

"M": "Where can I find strength?"

Swami: "If you have spiritual strength, then physical strength is not important. Your programme was to go swimming in the sea (this is exactly what Alexander and his friend were going to do: to spend 3 days at the coast for swimming). Go or you will be sorry. One must do everything sincerely, nothing should be done under compulsion. You have a good intellect and it's not necessary for you to stay here long. You have to decide".

"M": "How shall I live now? May be I should become a monk or work out an algorithm of my future actions?"

Swami: "If you put bread into the mouth of a hungry man, then he will never learn to earn it himself. One can't work out algorithm for the whole of one's future. That is why you are given a choice in your life. I give you a trial and watch what choice you will take. On that depends whether you pass your test or not. If there was no choice, you would be slaves, and I don't need slaves. You should find a spiritual path by yourself, everything depends on you. You should not expect any gratitude for whatever you give."

"M": "What concrete steps should I take to come to spirituality?"

Swami: "Let us take an example of water - it is a substance. One may pour it into a vessel; they may bring it to you in a restaurant in a crystal glass or you may pour it into a gold goblet. But the best of all is to go to the source, the spring and drink it from there. The spring is in your heart. It is forgotten; you must yourself converse with God. What should you do? You must gradually change yourself morally for the better. You have bad habits. Start with getting rid of them. You have already become better; less proud. Pride is making you blind. Alcohol dries up your brain - that is the worst, it's an obstacle to God. Smoking dries up your body. It hinders your development."

"M": "What then?"

Swami: "Act according to the criteria of Truth. One can clean the puss out of the wounds like Mother Teresa or help people, but if you are proud then everything is in vain. If you want you may bring people the knowledge about Me, but do not be a lecturer. Nothing should be done without sincerity, one should not be lazy. Your wife is more spiritual than you, she is more compassionate. Both of you still have an opportunity to come to Me - our life span is not finished yet".

“M": “I can't understand: is it a dream or not? I am waiting with my group for an interview".
Swami: "The cleverer a man is, the less faith he has. There are no miracles in the world, only a level of knowledge. For you to believe, tomorrow morning at darshan I'll make a sign by moving My hand three times like that (and Swami showed how He will do it). That's the end of your double time."
Next morning during the darshan Swami confirmed that it was not a dream by moving His hand three times. Swami repeatedly said that no one can see Him in a dream without His will. It is truly surprising that for each person Swami finds an individual way of helping him in his spiritual growth at the right moment; and giving this amazing interview, Swami expressed His Love to my friend as He always does.

A Guru teaches his Disciples as clearly as he could and with all the energy of his soul
Sometimes, hearts of disciples are being touched in such a way and the lives
of them are being blessed so as to inculcate a feeling in them that the Guru shows
the path of the Supreme Power. Guru's callings are taken very sincerely and
the disciples do not bother about the circumstances that changes from time to time,
providing different and unique opportunities to understand the Guru and also to
serve him and to grow in the path he directs. Guru enables the Disciples to learn
from their own mistakes and make them more understanding of others and more
effective to serve the Supreme Power.
