Intellectual scholarship is not very essential for a spiritual aspirant. Develop bliss not by merely mastering difficult scriptures but by cultivating love which begins in your very own home and family, and spreads to all creatures in the Universe. Put down the sharp edged weapon that seeks to analyse and chop the arguments of the opponent, cutting the other’s point of view to pieces. Take the delicacy of love and distribute it to one and all; win over recalcitrant hearts and give joy to all. That is the path of love, along which I shall lead you and guide you. God knows your name, your degrees, profession, status and past, and reveals Himself to you many times, only to satisfy you and give you a glimpse of His love, so that you can mix it with a little of your own and make your life joyful.

[h=5]The Early Days - 11 (Swami is Sakthi Swaroopini)

In the Old Mandiram, Swami used to sit along with the devotees and discuss various topics. Many came to him for advice. Swami used to make every one happy. . The number of devotees in the Mandir in those days often did not even cross single digits; even ten people on normal days were a big number.

Every day, turmeric powder and vermillion were placed on the deities on the altar. Incense sticks and lamps were also lit, and all these duties were done by the ladies staying in the Mandir.

An old devotee reports:

“ One day, while an elderly woman was busy doing lighting lamps, Swami was actually standing right behind her. Swami made a few remarks expressing his apparent displeasure in the way the idols were being decorated. The Lady immediately turned around and what did she see? Instead of Swami, it was the Divine Mother! The form of Sakthi Swaroopini! The Divine Mother was decked in a red silk saree. Her face was shining with turmeric powder and vermillion and beautiful gold jewellery adorned her neck.

What a divine blessing Swami conferred on her! It was just heavenly. She often recounted this glorious darshan with great fervour. In those cherished days, those few devotees saw the glory of Swami. None had seen Lord Rama or Lord Krishna, but living in the divine presence of this Sai Avatar was a great opportunity and blessing.

In those cherished days, those few devotees saw the glory of Swami.
With Love & Regards, MUMBAI SRINIVASAN.

Sathya Sai Baba's miracles are numerous. A miracle that Sathya Sai Baba performed during His early days is sure to interest those who believe in Him.
Some of the devotees, may have been familiar with the photo of Baba sitting on a tiger skin. One cannot but fancy, the interesting account of the story behind the skin of the tiger, when unravelled.

The story goes thus : Once a hunting enthusiast shot a tiger and was on his way home, when his car broke down near River Chitravathi, which winded in its course through Puttaparthi. The driver tried his level best to get the car going, however, it would not budge. The hunter was perplexed as to how he should proceed further.

The driver then mentioned about a lad in the village, who was said to be endowed with miraculous powers. The hunter, finding no other way out, brushing aside intervening rational reasoning, gave in to the driver's suggestion and asked him to fetch the strange lad.

After a while, the driver arrived with the lad, who was none other than Sathya Sai Baba, who was a teenager then. The Swamy who arrived near the car, chastised the hunter, “What did that poor tiger do to you, to shoot it down? Are you aware of the fact that you have allowed two little cubs to fend for themselves? Take care of those cubs!," saying so, the Swamy tapped the car and walked His way.

The car immediately started with the contact of the Swamy, and the hunter who was spellbound by the Swamy's power, directed the car back to the forest. He found the cubs and secured them in a zoo to be taken care of properly. He subsequently, met the Swamy later in Puttaparthi and handed over the skin to Him.

This is one of Sathya Sai Baba's early miracles, sometimes also termed as His first miracle, worked out for someone beyond the borders of Puttaparthi.

[h=5]Why keep Swami's picture in the pocket?

We accept that God is the indweller of our hearts. But when it comes to actual practice we often forget the fact.

Once (1972) a group of devotees, mostly office bearers of Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation of Madhya Pradesh was blessed with a special audience by Bhagawan at Brindavan, Whitefield. It lasted for over 70 minutes. Swami was seated in His chair and all of them were sitting around His Feet. It was almost a full-length discourse explaining in great detail the devotion of Meera bai. Baba stressed on the point when Meera bai said to herself that the 'Rana can only demolish the temple of brick and mortar, not the temple of her heart wherein Giridhara Gopala was seated'. After that, all of them were granted 'padanamaskaram'.

Some members in the group pulled out Swami's pictures from their pockets to be autographed by Him. While granting this request smilingly Swami observed: 'Why keep Swami's picture in the pocket? You must keep Swami in the heart.' It is from there that He drives away the despondency of everyone, and it is there where the reconstruction of everyone takes place. For,

"My mission is to grant you courage and joy, to drive away weakness and fear. Don't condemn yourself as sinners, sin is a misnomer for what are really errors, provided you repent sincerely and resolve not to follow evil again. Pray to the Lord to give you strength to overcome the habits which had enticed you when you were ignorant."[/h]

For example, in every house, we think of drinking pure water and we
buy Aqua Plus, RO System, etc. so as to make it potable and not to get any
disease from water. Like that, the thoughts of every person has to undergo
some cleanliness so that he does not succumb to the outside worldly material
pleasures. In fact, we live in a world, which is mixture both good and bad.
The only thing is that the proportion of their mixture is to be analysed. Some
people are able to tolerate the bad ones and keep away from getting mingled
or influenced themselves by the bad deeds. No doubt every one has problems
and miseries in life. Answer to this is to attend a Satsang or join a Namasmaran
so that one can get eased from such pressures. This not only relieves temporarily
pressures from the mind but also enables a person to contemplate on the inner
side of the mind to make righteous choice. It makes a person's life easier
and free from the polluted world which is mixed up with desires and thoughts (both good
and bad) and facilitates a person to have a choice for right deeds and actions.

Divinity is above and beyond the intellect and unreachable through the senses. It is its own law; it is independent of all restrictions and modes. Each of the senses can perform only one operation to contribute to gathering knowledge. The ear can inform you of sound; the eyes can speak of colour, the tongue of taste, etc. Know that the Divine is beyond all sensations and systems. Creation, Sustenance and Dissolution (Srishti, Sthithi and Laya) are three expressions of the Divine will. You must penetrate the inner meaning of Creation (Srishti) by performing your duty as worship (Karma Yoga), you must grasp the significance of Sustenance (Sthithi) through Devotion to the Lord (Bhakthi Yoga), and when you attain wisdom (through Jnana Yoga), you arrive at the experience of Laya, Union with Divine.

These days, we notice children perceiving different ideas and some say
that they want to create something new. They clearly say that they
want to be creative. Some parents do not listen to them or give their
opinion to their views. However they have an anxiety or ambition to invent
something new that so far nobody else has done it. Let us not worry about
the originality from his/her own point. It may not mean that they do not have
adequate knowledge even to improvise one that may be existing with a better
performance. Doing something completely anew may take sometime but
then they are devoted in their attempt and have adequate knowledge and
intelligence to reach the goal. They may go around in circles looking for some
data or information to form their basic input. Like this, people also has to do
some effort to find out as what is life all about. As children are enlightened
everyone has to observe from our Scriptures about the Divine Power with all
humility. We are all servants to our own Masters, i.e. the Supreme Power.
Everyone has to develop passions towards HIM and discover what we really are.
Our goal in life has to be towards attaining the Divine Power to fulfill our
potential as human beings and to understand the cause of our birth in this Universe.

Devotion (Bhakthi) is the continuous flow of love which is unchanging, sincere and pure (Nithya, Sathya, Nirmalam). There is no one who is devoid of devotion; deep within the core, everyone has the feeling of kinship with all creatures. If you have no love, you are like the lamp without the flame. The presence or absence of the feeling makes a lonely man miserable or makes one likeable to many. Love of the pure type is like a bright light. It is not polluted by hate nor is contaminated with greed. Faith in God and faith in doing good is very essential. Also you must have faith in the concept of merit and sin (punya and papa). This will help you examine each act and consider its consequences before taking the action. Devotion makes you aware of the Lord, who sustains and supports every being and brings you nearer and dearer to Him.

The love of the Gopis towards Krishna has led many ignorant people enmeshed in worldly attachments and physical attractions, to turn their faces away from God. Before passing judgement on any subject, you must investigate closely. The love of the Gopis towards Krishna was super-physical, the love of the soul for the Over-soul, of the river for the sea. Their joy when they feel His presence is as supreme as their grief when they feel they are deprived of it. That is why among the songs of the saints, you have Nindhaasthuthi also; that is to say, songs, which blame Him for being cruel, partial, negligent, etc.! Persons deep in this type of love see nothing else, hear nothing else; they behave like mad persons in the world’s view.

Let us imagine that if a Devotee spells the following to the Supreme Power in a
Temple what would be the reaction :

"It is you who have created me in this Universe in a holy and ancient Nation of Bharatam.
You know me where I am and there is no need for you to search me as I intend to be at
your Lotus Feet. You know when I sit and when I rise.
It is you who make me to perceive
my thoughts and go about. You are familiar with all my methods of worship, prayer, etc.
Before I utter something in front of you, you are sure that what word is on my tongue.
I do not know except to speak glorious about you and do Namasmaran. I do not know
the high mountain peaks to do Tapas and holy rivers to dip in daily, though they all belong
to you. I bow down before you and can pray to you and kneel before you to have a
darshan of you".

Look at Arjuna! When the choice was placed before him to decide which he should receive – the entire army of redoubtable Yadhava war heroes or Lord Krishna alone, unarmed and refusing to fight – without any hesitation, he chose Krishna alone! He knew; he believed; and so, he was saved. What profit will an individual or country make if it accumulates money, gold and grain? The bliss derived from the worship of the Lord which arouses spiritual joy is, any day, far more desirable than the above. Want of faith is a source of true weakness. Love (Prema) is the seed, the overpowering experience of merging with the Divine is the tree (thanmayathwam), and inexhaustible bliss (Anandam) is the fruit. Achieve this consummation with firm faith in the Divine.

A person can attain spiritual joy only through regular prayer or worship
or through participation in a Namasmaran Programme because of one's
faith in such activities. The joy is not only elevated and it eliminates
superstition from the minds of the people besides fear and sorrow. A true
believer of the Supreme Power is placed amidst the joy of ocean by active
participation in Namasmaran and the clouds and shadows or doubts about
the existence of the Supreme Power besides mental depression in the mind
is totally eradicated. Joyousness produces good health, prosperity in one's
own life, develops friendship within the Satsang society, spirtual feelings,
comfortable state of mind, etc. Susceptibility of excited emotion enables
bending his/her way to bear the trials of earth, recollection of his/her
happy destiny towards the bliss of the Supreme Power.

Here is a Sloka to be read by everyone.

यत्कृत्यं तन्न कृतं यदकृत्यं तत्कृत्यवदाचरितम् ।
उभयोः प्रायश्चित्तं शिव तव नामाक्षरद्वयोच्चरितम् ॥

Chanting the Namas of the Supreme Power are a sure means
to absolve oneself of both these types of sins. In this connection,
Shringeri Jagadguru in one of his Pravachanams mentioned that
Sri Adi Shankarachara has advocated that one must do their
assigned duty properly/regularly and shun the ego and always be
in the company of Satpurushas so as to sustain Spiritual joy.

SAIRAM

A Thing that Needs No Receiving

1. Practice pure and unconditional love. No matter how difficult and impossible things may appear, if you practice to love alone…… no matter what….. the difficulty shall diminish and the effort and love shall return to you as the boon of peace!
2. You are limitless in strength… you are endless in love…. you are the beginning of truth…. repeat that to yourself when you experience fears….. say to yourself, “I can either become a prisoner to my limitations, or, at this very moment, I can break the chains of ignorant selfishness and free myself into the ocean of love.”
3. Conditional love is love that wishes to give only for it to be returned much more than what was given….. such love pierces the heart of the giver when it is initially given and he hopes that the return of love shall heal his wound. Little does he realize that his expectation of return keeps increasing and no matter how much love was returned, he is already weeping with the many wounds that he himself has inflicted upon his self in the unreal expectations of return.
4. When you expect God to love you as you are…. then you too must practice the same love toward all your brothers and sisters.
5. Even if a fraction of love that you gave is not returned, you should turn to the God that resides within you and say, “O Lord, I utilized the gift of love that You gave to me. I know that it has reached the one that You willed to receive. I know he is at peace, and now, Lord, I wish to ask You to give me the strength to remember that You have done Your work through my body, and I must now patiently await for your next task and forge the work that has already been completed by You….”

Your duty (Karma) has to be done righteously (in dharma). Those dominated by ignorance (Thamas) do their duty solely for the sake of the fruits thereof and they resort to all sorts of subterfuges in order to gain the results they desire. For this category of people, the end justifies the means. Those dominated by passion (Rajas) are proud and pompous, and boast that they are the doers, the benefactors and the experiencers. Those dominated by qualities of calm serenity (Sathwa) do their duties regardless of the fruits thereof and leave the result to the Lord. They will not worry whether it leads to success or failure, ever conscious of their duties and never of their rights. As a matter of fact, there is more joy in the actual doing, than in the result that accrues. This attitude must be the experience of every true seeker.
