My Husband gets kind of scared when I sing this song for him and play the Theme Music on the piano at late night.

Kadavul pathi, mirugam pathi,
Kalanthu seiytha kalavai naan.
Veliye mirugam, ulle kadavul
Vilanga mudiya kavithai naan.
Mirugam kontru, mirugam kontru
Kadavul valarka parkinten
Aanal, kadavul kondru, unavai thintu
mirugam mattum valarkirathe

Half-god, half-man,
A mixture of the two made me.
A beast outside, a God inside,
I am incomprehensible poetry.
Killing the beast, I try to raise god
But, killing and usurping god,
The animal alone grows in me.

Nandakumara, Nandakumara,
Naalai mirugam kolvaya,
Mirugam kondra echam kondu
Meendum kadavul seivaya
Kurangil iruthu manithan ental
Manithan niryai velvana
Miruga gyathiyil pirantha manitha
Deva jyothiyil kalappaya

Nandakumara, Nandakumara,
Will you kill the beast tomorrow?
Will you raise god from the beast's remains?
If man evolved from monkey,
Will he completely overcome it?
You who are born in the animal species,
Will you become one with the eternal flame?

Kadavul pathi, mirugam pathi,
Kalanthu seiytha kalavai naan.
Veliye mirugam, ulle kadavul
Vilanga mudiya kavithai naan.
Mirugam kontru, mirugam kontru
Kadavul valarka parkinten
Aanal, kadavul kondru, unavai thintu
mirugam mattum valakirathe.

Half-god, half-man,
A mixture of the two made me.
A beast outside, a God inside,
I am incomprehensible poetry.
Killing the beast, I try to raise god
But, killing and usurping god,
The animal alone grows in me.

Kadavul pathi, mirugam pathi,
Kalanthu seiytha kalavai naan.
Kaatril yeeri, mazhayil aadi,
Kavithai padum paravai naan.

Half-god, half-man,
A mixture of the two made me.
Riding the wind, dancing in the rain
I am the bird that sings poems.

Kadavul pathi, mirugam pathi,
Kalanthu seiytha kalavai naan.
Kaatril yeeri, mazhayil aadi,
Kavithai padum paravai naan
Kaatril yeeri, mazhayil aadi,
Kavithai padum paravai naan
Ovvoru thuliyum, ovvoru thuliyum
Uyiril verkal kulirkirathe
Ella thuliyum kulirumpothu
Iruthuli mattum Sudukirathe.

Half-god, half-man,
A mixture of the two made me.
Riding the wind, dancing in the rain
I am the bird that sings poems.
In every drop of rain, my soul grows colder
Even when all drops are cold, only two remain hot.

Nandakumara, Nandakumara,
Mazhai neer sudathu theriyatha,
Kannam vazhikire kanner thulithan
Vennir thuli ena arivaya
Sutta mazhayum, sudatha mazhayum,
ontai kandavan neethane
Kanner mazhayil kanner mayayil
Kulikavaithavan neethane

Nandakumara, Nandakumara,
Don't you know that rainwater is never hot?
Do you know that the tears that
flow down your cheek that are hot?
You are one who got wet in the hot and cold rain
You are one who got wet in tears.

ஏன் ரேணு உன் கணவரைப் போட்டு இப்படி கொடுமை படுத்தற? But I think you compensate aptly by dancing to songs like 'என் பேரு மீனாகுமாரி'! :)

Look, next time you dance to this song for him, and it is an apt song to describe you (according to me :)).

Dear Kunjuppu

I had selected this song to post today, from the movie 'வாலி' - Oh Sona, I love you love you da!

OH SONA - VAALEE - YouTube

I shall dedicate this song to you for your comments -
I am only seeing some of the old movies of jothika and coming to love this lass’ acting skills.

This movie/song was Jyothika's first tamil movie/song!

Kind regards

when i was still in my single digits (agewise), summer used to be a torture. it meant leaving madras, my friends and the whole days of playing, and exchanging this for a pattikkaadu in north malabar, with no electricity, running water, flush toilet. and no company.

the grandparents however had a huge collection of the 78rpms, indeed sets of them in tin boxes with saraswati store label. most of them were hmv, but i also remember odeon as the other record brand.

there was this gramaphone, with a huge speaker, itself a work of art, made in england.

one need to crank the gramaphone to tighten the spring which rotated the table at 78 rounds per minute (hence the 78 rps). we also had to replace the headless needle, every few songs, as the needle has to be really sharp to fit into the graphite groove, which eventually wore away, and could be activated only by rubbing it wit a cloth immersed in kerosine.

my grandma, whom if i now look back, must have been a stunner in her youth, used to join me with her harmonium. in those days, without the benefit of tv or radio, it was common in any household i was told, for folks to learn some musical instrument or the other, and harmonium was considered as fashion, in upper class travancore cochin munsiff household of 1920s.

we used to have whole sets of dramas in those tin boxes, i think 6 to a box. nandhanar, vallala maharaja were my favourites.

and tons tons of the then film music of 1930s and 40s. and ofcourse carnatic music - chembai, GNB, ariyakudi,

of all the film music, for which sometimes grandma is used to sing along with the harmonium, this particular song, comes to my mind, even now after 55 years, so often. atleast monthly, when it is quiet, i am at peace, and instinctively search for some humming music.

so, without much ado, here is m.s.subbulakshmy, 'engum nirai naadha brahmam' from shakunthalai.

please enjoy!!

My dear Valli.. here are my songs for you....
from Smt. Lalitha of Travancore Sisters.. and Shri. Nageshwara Rao's movie
Tunbam nergayil..... a lovely song... with minimum background music but with maximum effect... My heart always goes for the old songs, even if I enjoy all the latest hits..... May be the latest hits lack the melody and the feelings that the old songs had in their lyrics...

kalaiya en.... a lovely song starring Gemini Ganeshan and Padmini....

Thank you dear....I will try my best... You know something; The teachers have a particular art to understand the curiosity of the listeners.. I mean all Teachers....I am not exaggerating... believe me... When we start narrating a concept to the students.. instantly we will come to know the listeners are curious or not by their expressions and body languages....We will try to make soo interesting and enjoyable that the students ask questions, laugh simultaneously the concept go deep into their system... or else the whole class will be boring. And trust me, I am a child friendly teacher, I like to play and make merry with my students. Now I am more into administration than teaching, but I see that I connect with my students, talk to them, share motivational stories, puzzle them brain teasers, make merry with them... or else... the day is meaningless for the teacher in me... So, my dear Valli, I will see that I maintain the curiosity in you... And for you will do my best... love.. Anandi

Dear Anandi

From what you wrote so far I am able to understand that you are one very Good Teacher! And also that your experiences with teachers have been very good!

That is good! Not so much for me! In my experience not all teachers are like you! I had lot of teachers who behave like... like.. ok 'Teachers'!

That is, 'What I say is the ultimate thing and no one should question anything!' I pay my ode and respect to just these teachers - Daya Madam when I was in year 3 and Shobana madam when I was in High School and also to the Tamil teacher and also mother of Prema! Apart from that my experience has been very bitter!

Kind regards

Dear Valli
You are right...because they treat teaching as a profession... not as a skill which is the blessing of God.. All can't become teachers, if they wish to become one. Now Education has become the fastest commercial commodity.... In my school, I have got both types of staff. What to do.. I have to manage with both... I preach about sincerity, dedication and commitment everyday... How much of them take it to the heart... I don't know.. But I do my part..I quote many examples and give them free lecture.. If one gets some tips from that, then my purpose will obtain the desired results.. And as a student, I still remember all my teachers.. and yes, my experiences with my teachers are the moments to cherish... Thank you Anandi

Dear Sri.Krishnamurthy, Greetings.

I am rather surprised how come our friends are missing songs like
உத்தரவின்றி உள்ளே வா அதுல ஒரு வரி
அந்தபுரத்தில் நண்பன் இருக்க இந்த புறத்தில் வா

For your pleasure......

Cheers!

there is a particular thrill, when we watch on the silver screen, love scenes between real life husband wife. i still remember the thrill, when, along with mrs k, we watched, 'eyes wide shut', with tom cruise, nicole kidman.

they were very much in love then, and married still. one of the first scenes, the couple getting ready to attend a party - and nicole going through among the most privates of rituals, in front of her husband, which only a husband wife intimacy can provide. so natural, and so naturally filmed. not obscene but lovingly erotic. :)

we have had in kollywood our love couples, the oldest and to me, the most sentimental, gemini ganesh and savitri. it was around 1961, when paasa malar was released, and over a neighbour's radio, i hear mayilvahanam of radio ceylon, announcing their wedding. at the same time, my mother, wondering about what would happen to bobji, his official wife till then, and their brood of daughters!

together they would act in scores of movies, with sivaji playing savi's brother in a few of the paa hits of bhim singh.

paadha kanikkai was never a hit movie, but it had two hit songs - the ever haunting, veedu varai uravu - a must for any skeptic, and this lovely lovly love song - reinforcing our commitment to the maman or athai magan...after 40+ years.. still tender.

this video starts after the first stanza, but i would rather present an imperfect video than a full song, which can be easily googled.

savitri, has always been of heavy hips and oval face, with a tongue still stuck to the underthroat - but these imperfections pale when compared to her wholesome charm. sambaar saadham is just that - loveable staple. can go without for a couple of days. but like thayir saadham, we run back, to our comfort food. :)

here is gemini savitri paadha kanikkai 'athai magane poi varaava' :) evergreen..and never tire of listening to it.

Kunjs..you think so different from me.I dont like to see love scenes of real life hubby and wife cos its "Halal" relationships.
There is some thrill watching the "Haram" ones especially the real life bad boy hero and the real life bad girl heroine.

Abhi and Ash dont interest me anymore.Same with Kajol and Ajay.Once its Halal the Kicku goes out of the door.

Kunjuppu sir or mama,

I absolutely agree with you..that kind of tenderness can not be acted.. but again artists like Savithri, she was just super.. I think she is a real beauty in my eyes.. if anyone is interested there is a guy name Vadravu Murthy who has started this page called " Mahanati", you will see so many photos and also stories on her.. the very sad thing is she was betrayed by her husband and that guy was not right for her at all.. I had been to her house and seen both of them when they lived in was it Boag road or Habibullah road,..

I love the song " athai magane even today.. :-)
