If there is no Tasmac then illicit arrack is going to spread OR going to be illegally brought into Tamilnadu. Atleast now Tamilnadu gets 1000s of crores as income. You cannot stop drinkers from drinking. Best thing is to keep Tasmac away from Temples and Schools.

The logic appears to be flawed.

All addictions sneak in and thrive because of personal weaknesses, cultural degradation and most importantly opportunities.

Before the coming to power in Tamilnadu of Dravidian parties, there was prohibition in force. That helped a generation of youngsters keep away from alcohol. And the society knows how they have reaped the benefit of better education and other economic opportunities.

With the lifting of prohibition we have let loose on the youngsters the most lethal handicap. Gujarat still has prohibition in place and you see the difference in the society.

That thousands of crore income is plundered money. Plundered from the homes of addicts. Drinkers will drink no doubt. But a drinker would not have become a drinker in the first place if there was prohibition.

It is time the TN Govt. reintroduces prohibition.

I agree This cannot be an revenue issue for Government- Could be a moral issue and Government should not be "Moral Police" and and I donot agree with this - it is time the TN Govt. reintroduces prohibition. It is a health issue about which the Government should be concerned! As in Tobocco bussiness it should discourage people consuming alcohol and not hold a monopoly over the liquor trade! It could be taxed heavily as tobocco for revenue - Like Tasmac created for revenue Government may be tempted in tobacco also!

No doubt Govt. is getting income thru liquor. At the same time, Govt is spending for rehabilitation for the affected people.

Supply of illicit liquor can be controlled by constant vigil, and sensitive areas should be brought under regular review. If you happen to cross any Tasmac, you will definitely notice it is only the poor people, especially daily wage earners, who throng the outlet.

Total prohibition is possible.

About a year back, while I was waiting for a Bus in Samiyar Madam Bus stop in Kodambakkam at 10 A.M, one habitual Beggar was just uttering loudly &clearly the following sentences :----Innikku government kku 40 rupai Danam Panninen. I could easily make out , that in Tasmac he had taken drinks for Rs 40/- It couch fetch a Full meal anywhere nearby ?
What I want to say is this .We have Social outlook to get such wasteful expenses by a Beggar, because/Gove isearningProfit on this, That national income grows & we in general enjoy the fraction of the Beggars money indirectly thou,gh ?
I am hearing Dr. Ramdas;s lonely Voice to bring in Prohibition.
Cam Members suggest an workable Solution ?
We can submit a true /workable Proposal/Action Plan ? Sendto the P. M
Can the learned experienced make a Draft ? & circulate ?

Prohibition is the only solution in a country with such a large population of poor people. Even if illegal liquor increases, the number of people drinking overall will dramatically decrease leading to better life, health & longetivity. Not to mention, more money in the hands of the poor!

Of course, some will continue to argue freedom –individual choice is more important etc… blah blah blah… if so, why not make drugs freely available to all - let the individual choose? if alcohol is bad in every medical study conducted, it needs to be banned and at-best served only in 5 star hotels.

From the period of Soma Bhanam,Sura Bhanam this is flourishing.
no Govn can stop, eradicate ,curtail this habit.
Alwan

For the poor people, their earnings & livelihood is lost in liquor....May be we have liquor only on permit as in Gujarat (There are loopholes here too)..But to a large extent drinking habit will reduce with Prohibition which is good for the society!

Gujarat position is perhaps , to be emulated. Unless all theWomen, with One Voice make aMovement & meet The P. M, some hope Canberra there.Any suggestions to achieve

One glaring xamplefor failure of any movement is Women's reservation Bill, which could not become a reality bec of Male domination & leaders like Sonia were not serous & dropped pursuing in the last minute. Can we call it SABOTGE ?

Women drinkers are a minority in India...21% of men drink while 2% of women drink in India..Issue with the young getting initiated into drinking...The age of initiation to drinking has reduced to 13 years from 19 years in past 2 decades as per research in 2009 by Raekha Prasad...We need to spread awareness of drinking..The dangers of drinking including reduction in life span should be advertized widely...But GOI has to take proactive steps

JJ Ji,

That was a nice judgement giving due importance and significance to Teachers and their behaviour as role model to students.

This country which has seen Teacher like President Radhakrishnan has now teachers like those who sponsored liquor party to students.

Excerpts from the judgement:

"Justice S. Vaidyanathan dismissed a writ petition filed by the Tamil teacher, challenging the suspension order, quoting Mahatma Gandhi: “A teacher cannot be without character. If he lacks it, he will be like salt without its savour. A teacher must touch the hearts of his students. Boys imbibe more from the teacher’s own life than they do from books.

“If teachers impart all the knowledge in the world to their students but do not inculcate truth and purity amongst them, they would have betrayed them.” He also quoted former President S. Radhakrishnan: “A teacher must be an example of good conduct. He must inspire the pupils who are entrusted to his care with love of virtue and goodness.”

Beginning his judgment with the Sanskrit verse: ‘Gurur Brahma, Gurur Vishnu, Gurur Devo Maheshwara,’ which elevates the position of a teacher to that of God, the judge said the High Court in a judgment rendered in 1990 had said: “It is a very lamentable state of affairs that, in this country, a teacher who is considered equal to God, should fall from the highest pedestal to the lowest level.”

Let this be an 'eye opener' to other such Teachers.

Tasmac witnessing the biggest decline of demand - for the first four months, beer sales have dipped drastically when compared to the 2014.

The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited, popular known by its acronym Tasmac, is witnessing the biggest decline in its beer sales. This year, for the first four months, beer sales have dipped drastically when compared to the same period in 2014.

In January only 14 lakh cases (each case contains 12 bottles) were sold as against 15.80 lakh on the same period last year.

The figures include the elite outlets set up by Tasmac in malls across the State.

Beer sales are typically higher during summer, which is, starting March. But this year, the scorching sun has failed to attract beer lovers.

In March 2015 only 20.85 lakh cases were sold as against 25.39 cases the previous year. Similarly, in April only 21.71 lakh cases were sold when compared to 27.60 lakh in 2014.

Protesters seek closure of all liquor shops

Thirty women construction workers, affiliated to the All India Trade Union Congress, were arrested when they attempted to lock a Tasmac liquor retail shop near Anna bus stand here on Tuesday.

The protesters demanded the closure of all liquor shops that were ruining the lives of women, who were rendered widows as their husbands died following addiction to liquor.

The protest was led by the women construction workers’ union’s district treasurer S. Ammaponnu.

The agitators said that the government that was giving half-a-sovereign gold for ‘thali’ of poor women was snatching it from them through the Tasmac shops. Opening of liquor shops in huge numbers had resulted in increasing number of alcoholics.

They wanted the government to stop making youths criminals and also not to kill them with the Tasmac shops."

I have come across a news item that beer sales has come down this year in TN compared to earlier years, possibly due to increase in price.
