These school authorities does not seems to have any idea about this Forum's Delhi crusader. lol

Hope on seeing this post, he will immediately swing into action against the School authorities for having dismissed the girls who had hard drinks and he may go to the extent of recommnding GREAT REWARDS to the girls for their exemplary act. lol

During my worklife I attended an executive development program conducted in my offices by IIM faculty.

One of them was carrying a hip flask .

In between lectures , he would go to rest room and take a swig from the hip flask and return

The female faculty was using rest room for smoking in order not to offend the sensibilities of menfolk{ in those days smoking was not banned in offices]. She felt she

required it to teach professional management to oldies in work place.

The status of govt schools are such that they are only good as relief centres for people wanting an alternative place for stay during rains .

or they can be used as polling stations.

These old rundown buildings are such that students need angoor ki beti to make possible sitting five or six hours every day waiting for absentee teachers.

The location of wine shops have nothing to do with preferance of students.

Many require a quick one after boring lectures of indifferent teachers in case they turn up for work

I have no interest in judicial process or state governance.

.So there there is no need for the crusading spirit. Retire in peace and enjoy what life has to offer including chennai rains and booze shops in neighbourhood
I heard in chennai Tasmac was flooded by rain water and men - taking shelter there! Tasmac also has a social responsibility!

Brazen attack on freedom of speech: Kovan

Folk singer says instead of shutting down voices, the State must be open to self-criticism.

Folk singer S. Kovan, who has been involved in a political propaganda for over two decades, was recently arrested and a case of sedition slapped on him for his song titled ‘Moodu TASMAC Moodu’ against the State’s liquor policy. The arrest has made him famous overnight.

In this telephonic interview, he talks about the ills of State’s liquor policy and rejects charges of inciting people to commit violence.

You have been using folk music for political propaganda for almost 25 years. What are you thoughts on State government slapping a sedition case now?

Kovan:
Despite having performed songs fiercely critical of the governments in the past, I have never faced such a clampdown. I don’t see it as a personal attack on me.

Easy access to liquor a cause for concern

26NOV-2_GAJBCFT_TH_2634208g.jpg

The recent incident of dismissing four students of a Namakkal school for appearing for exams in an inebriated state has come as a shock to sections of population in the State. The easy availability or access to alcohol for teens is an issue that cannot be swept under the carpet.

Chennai has seen a remarkable growth in the restaurant business with several pubs and resto-bars competing with clubs of posh five-star hotels for patronage.

The State-owned liquor shops (TASMAC) might be lax in enforcing the laws related to selling of alcohol to minors, but pub owners in Chennai say that they enforce the law strictly. However, TASMAC shops continue to be a preferred choice because of the price offered by them.

“As far as I know, no popular pub or a bar in the city is lax in enforcing the rule of not allowing anyone under 21 enter the property. In our pub, we routinely ID check anyone who seems younger than 21 years of age,” says Arasu Dennis, who has helped set up and worked in several pubs in the city.

Most pub owners agree that Tamil Nadu has inflexible laws prescribing who can be allowed into a restaurant/pub where alcohol is sold when compared to other states.

Experience has taught that bringing total prohibition is an impossible task. Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Islam prohibit taking of intoxicants. Most of the Islamic Nations have enforced Prohibition by law. Many western Countries including Russia and US have tried prohibition at one time or other and found failure to continue. In our country a few States like Gujarat continue Prohibition.
First and foremost for enforcing prohibition is to raise the social awareness against use of intoxicants. That is what Gandhiji did. This should be supported by the Goverments in regulating availbility of intoxicants. There should be strict censorship against showing scenes of drinking in Cinema and visual media. This is a long drawn process which should be discussed seriously by all political parties and Social groups.

Liquor ban in Bihar: Nitish Kumar announces ban from April next year

Nitish Kumar said the poorest of the poor had been consuming liquor, badly hitting their families and their children's education.

Bihar will go dry from April 1, 2016, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced on Thursday.

The chief minister made the announcement — a part of his election pledge — at an official function to mark Prohibition Day.

He said the poorest of the poor had been consuming liquor, badly hitting their families and their children’s education.

Increasing liquor consumption was also a major cause for domestic violence, particularly against women, and had contributed to a rise in crimes.

“Women are suffering more than anyone else due to increasing liquor consumption,” he said.

It is nice to hear the news that Bihar has decided to follow Gujarat, Nagaland, Manipur and Lakshadeep by banning alcohol. Already Kerala Government has decided to introduce prohibition in Kerala in phased manner.

In Gujarat both gents as well as ladies are prone to Jaritha beeda which Chewed in appropriate proportion would provide more intoxication as good (? ) as the liquor. In Vadhodara This item is available in every street corner.

Nithish announced it only after the election.

Here JJ has been in a fix to announce it before election.

How many people by choice would like to live in bihar-prohibition or no prohibition?

Nitish has carefully said , he would implement it in next financial year.

The liquor revenues have increased from a few hundreds crores in 2005-06 to four thousand plus crores in a decade.

The revenue loss is such that the economy would further go downhill.

In addition , bihar has porous border with nepal besides W.bengal, UP, and jharkand.

Liquor can freely flow across states. The state has to face the challenge of preventing smuggling of liquor.

Added to it there are illicit breweries of country made liquor and prohibition will spur setting up of more such breweries across the state.

There is a flourishing liquor mafia to contend with which has been minting money across the state.

Nitish has an ambitious budget of 2.70 cr rs for next five years for the state. He is cutting of the major source of revenue.

The state enforcement agencies would be wasting their energies to combat the liquor trade and consumption.

I thought Nitish would concentrate on developing the state instead of pleasing the women folk of bihar through populist decisions.

Nitish Kumar has taken all this points into consideration, but on finding it difficult to win the Assembly General Election, he has used this trump card of ‘prohibition’.

Now, it is his turn to honour the commitment and he knows well that if he fails to do that, next time he cannot occupy C.M. Chair, I mean the power.

What is important is power and politicians, who have tasted the power will compromise on anything. It is he who initiated several women centric moves which includes free Bicycle scheme for girls and 50% reservtion for women in Panchayatsetc and hence know well how to play the cards.

It is the women votes that gave him thumping victory and now it is his turn to repay the debts. And he know pretty well that women are overburdedned because of men of Bihar consuming liquor.

Some with limited exposure to politics come here to preach as though Nitish has committed a grave offence. I think such member needs to learn more about arithmetics in politics and grow.

What is important is welfare of the citizen who have conveyed their loyalty and faith by voting the party to power.

Hence, no debate was held and there was no discussion on the subject and it is not enforced in phased manner like in Kerala

To gain and to retain the trust of the general public, Nitish would have thought that it is just and necessary to introduce ‘prohibition’ and hence has done the right thing atleast now.

And the BJP being the opponent on their part have supported this move as their model State Gujarat is praticing 'prohibition'.

In a few years, the word " Tirunelveli" might be included in dictionary, and people would start using it with a particular context as.............. " Are you doing Tirunelveli here?"

There was an interesting discussion on prohibition in bihar on TV
1. Bihar assembly has about 60 legislators facing criminal charges.

Some of them are likely are likely to offer protection to liquor mafia to ply their trade

2. Enforcement of prohibition is likely to tie up the manpower resources in prevention and enforcement activities.

3. It is considered more sensible to organise women to become economically strong by forming self help groups and make them viable economically to run families instead of trying to reform drunkard husbands.

4.It might be more useful to reduce the number of liquor licences and open shops a little away from village so that some effort is required to reach the shops to get

liquor. Also it is considered sensible to increase the cost of IMFL by taxing it more so that less is within reach of working class.Govt should not get into liquor

procurement or distribution business to preserve its stance on good governance vis a vis women if they are considered vote banks of ruling party.

5. Nitish's ambition is to enter national politics in three or four years as chief of opposition coalition. hence now he has got only limited interest in local politics.

That explains his lack of interest in sound development politics in bihar. He would just carry on and pass on the gaddi to RJD which suits Lalu prasad yadav

Member come here to write freely with his misconceived thoughts while the ground reality is quite different.

Some of the Governments have started to relaize the ill effects of liquor and have decided to act in favour of banning liquor but in a phased manner.

This is what happening around us:

It is a very fair demand IMO

Considering the flood havoc and travails of 'Kudimagans' Government may seriously consider their demand sympathetically and pass favourable orders.

P.S. Why not they demand 'TASMAC' product as a 'Freebie' to be distributed in the Ration Shop monthly with a quota??

While the Governbment was able to distribute 20 kgs rice freely every month, why not 30 'quarter' bottles @ one bottle per day for the breadwinner?

The suggested demand is to supply at ration shop or door delivery requested?
