Arrest of folk singer Kovan gives new lease of life for anti-liquor protests in Tamil Nadu

It was a curious scene on 4 August across Tamil Nadu as tipplers gulped down their ‘cuttings’ in barely concealed glee. They were surrounded by the police and for once, rather than being harassed, were provided with security to guzzle that daily ‘quarter’.

Anti-liquor campaigners in Tamil Nadu had issued a strident call to shut down TASMACs (Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation), the government-owned liquor retail monopoly which runs bars across the state. Protests peaked in August following the death of Gandhian activist and anti-liquor campaigner Sasi Perumal, who climbed up a telephone pole in Kanyakumari district during a protest, only to die of heart failure while perched atop the pole.

Sasi Perumal’s family sat in protest for close to a week, refusing to receive the activist’s body. “Our demands are total Prohibition,” said Navaneethan Sasi Perumal, 35-year-old son of Sasi Perumal, during the fast in Salem. “The government must announce this immediately and implement phased Prohibition within 6 months. In Salem, the birthplace of my father, as well as in Kanyakumari, where he died – we demand immediate closure of all liquor outlets,” he had said.

During the penultimate / ultimate day of election, in rural areas, the act of distribution of liquor, a few packs briyani and a

few thousands rupees per vote make a twist of turn around as the rural poor is the core of the majority.

And ultimately they pay the penalty for the next five years with hike in the rates of bus fare, milk, transport, etc. etc.

I frankly think prohibition issue is getting blown up out of proportion.

It has become a political issue.

I do not think this is the way to resolve a social issue.

A society thriving on freebies culture requires finances . The state needs to raise these either thru taxes on petrol or diesel or other means. How much of freebies can

be cut to enforce prohibition is a call to be taken by the state. Most states in india are unable to forego the revenue on liquor sales. Besides it hits tourism also.

The choice is difficult to make . A liberal society IMHO should keep away from taking a call on what citizen should consume. We are a democratic society. Our poor have

sufficient wisdom to decide what is good for them, We can leave them alone to decide what they should consume in what quantities.

True it is பணம் சுரக்கும் Kamadhenu for TN Government and mother of all cows We donot kill cows and eat beef - Politically sesitive issue you saw that in Bihar elections recently!

Rehabilitation of drunkards . ......LOL . It is not wise to waste time trying to save a man from himself.

It is as unwise as imposing prohibition on whole population.

Rehabilitation of drunkards is a tactics and strategy now being silently adhered to by some Churches for motivating some people for conversion. Hence, it is not a matter to be laughed at;but requires serious thought from social reformers.

If some community or religion helps drunkards and is prepared to take them in their fold, I see nothing wrong in it.Those who get helped join that community or religion

,it is their choice. Our constitution provides for freedom to practice any religion.

No one prevents any one to appeal against this order with Supreme Court?

Will anybody?

I know one who liberally preach a lot but don’t act for obvious reasons.

I have no interest in judicial process or state governance.

I believe in minimum governance by govt and do not think our court processes inspire any confidence in anyone that justice will be quick in forthcoming.

India will prosper inspite of the govt and our judicial system . Our demographic profile, enterprise will make india a rich country in 30 years or so inspite of the govt or

courts. So there there is no need for the crusading spirit. Retire in peace and enjoy what life has to offer including chennai rains and booze shops in neighbourhood

If you have no interest in judicial process, then go on your own way. Why do comment on judicial verdicts? You will come here to pass some senseless comments and when questioned do write like a great sadhu and parama yogi, which is nothing but utter disgust.
