Think or sink!

THE HISTORY OF THE KINGS OF TAMIL NADU IS FASCINATING SINCE IT SHOWS HUMAN PSYCHOLOGY AT ITS BEST.

CHERAN, CHOZHAN AND PAANDIYAN KINGS COULD NEVER GET ALONG WELL WITH ONE ANOTHER!

But they would form alliance using permutation and combination as time demands it.

Cheran and Chozhan may befriend and attack PaaNdiyan
Or Cheran and PaaNdian may befriend and attack Chozhan.

The same thing is true of the other possible combinations.

But poor Pallava King! No one befriended him and he was
the common enemy of the three kings of Tamil Nadu!

Unusual and timely alliances are not new to the politics of the olden days or the modern time!
A common aim/ enemy unites all the others against it/ him.

But to continue the alliance after achieving their aim will be difficult - unless people
give up their ego and continue to behave in a mature and responsible way!

First there were four parties- like the four legs of a cot.

Then the fifth party joined them and they became the Pancha PaaNdavaas.

Now that there are six leaders in the alliance... who could be the sixth???

Lord Krishna himself - who else? :)

Isn't Krishna the friend of the PaaNdavaas and called as 'PaaNdava neyan'? :thumb:

A spiritual Guru keeps saying " KEval Saakshi Bhava!" meaning

"Don't get involved in the happenings but just watch them as a mere spectator!"

I understood the real meaning of this message from Captain by watching him during a meeting.

The stunning crowd gathered to cheer him,

the alliance friends and leaders of the other parties,

the sky-high-praise being showered on him

did not make him react in any which way.

He was totally at peace and remained aloof - as if

all these were happening to someone else!

Dear VR ji,

Was reading some stuff from Sambhashana Sandesha Sanskrit Magazine and a Carnatic Music expert by the name Subrahmanya Chidambara Sharma wrote that the actual meaning of Carnatic music is not what its commonly thought as from the Southern regions of India but it means this:

कर्णयोः यत् अटति तदेव कर्णाटकसङ्गितम्
karNayoH yat athati tadheva karNAthakasaNGitam

VR ji...I can roughly translate it too...That which lingers in the ears is verily Carnatic music.

Athati technically means roam.

But I prefer to use the word Linger here instead of roam becos lingering sounds more apt when describing music.

Doesnt Subrahmanya Chidambara Sharma's explanation makes perfect sense?

Dear Renu,

Certainly it does perfect sense :clap2:

The Carnatic music mesmerizes us, haunts us, makes us happy or sad or sympathetic

or angry or valorous and can actually impart all the different rasa.

Swami Dayananda used to say this

"For enjoying classical music a person needs some infra structure and background knowledge!

For enjoying the pop music one need only five limbs - the head, the two legs and two hands."

You must have watched the mob clap and move like a million cobras swaying to the modi mastan!

Yuddha Berigai was played at wartime to make the soldiers ready for the warfare!
Every ritual/ ceremony in our life has a special music/ special instrument attached to it.
During Dasara, Devi must be worshiped with the music played on Veena.
The priest who was doing pooja in our temple would arrange for my veena recital for half an hour during every Dasara.

Dear VR ji,

I have read that saying of Swami Dayanand before and felt a bit disappointed by it.(BTW was he the same Daya Saras of Arya Samaj fame or someone else)

The reason I felt disappointed is becos that was coming from a Swamiji...if it was coming from a Carnatic music critic I would not have felt disappointed becos mere mortals like us have our preferences..but coming from a Swamiji I expected an answer which was not judgmental cos all types of music are from Sapta Swaras and it exerts it effects on the mind and heart of the audience and reactions differ.

I thought he was a tad too judgmental in his reply placing Carnatic music above pop music when both differ and do not need a comparison and have their rightful place in the music arena.

Also there is nothing in the world more mesmerizing than sounds of nature..the soft whisper of the leaves dancing in the breeze,a soulful cuckoo singing its heart out,the sound of gentle waves hitting the shore, the call of the dolphin,a calf calling its mother.....All of these do not know any Shruti,Raga or Tala..yet no singer can come close to any one of it.

Dear Renu,

I am talking about Poojya Swami Dayananda Saraswati who has established the Arsha Vidhya Gurululam and was doing yoemen service to Aanmeegam.

He was a great musician and his voice was vibrant, captivating and unique. He could have become a fill fledged professional Carnatic musician - if he had chosen to become one!

He has composed many songs which have become very popular. "Bo Shambo" in Revati Raagam is one of his compositions and is popular both in the world of music and dance.

Order is the First Law of Nature. Yes there is music everywhere and in everything - IF ONLY we have the patience and peace of mind to look for them and listen to them.

The humming of a bee can be as steady as the tambura string plucked - but can last much longer. The gurgling stream has its own pitch and tempo.

The rustling of the leaves is silky on the ears. The cuckoo 's soulful call ( its "akkoo!" is more of a cry than a song!) can bring tears in your eyes!

Each calf has a different pitch just like it has a different odor. The mooing of the cow has a much lower pitch but I am sure it will also very from cow to cow.

There is rhythm in whatever we do- whether it is beating the chappaathi dough or washing clothes in the old style by thrashing it on a stone.

The knife of a professional chef seems to dance while cutting and slicing vegetables and fruits. My younger son keeps me wonder stuck when he cuts vegetable like a pro!

Music and rhythm exist everywhere but very few know them since "They also serve who only stand and wait!"

Will a feast served to a destitute make him/her happy or sad??? :noidea:

Will the person be happy that he/ she got
a decent meal at least once in a life time :hungry:

OR

will he/ she feel sorry during every meal that followed -
yearning for the same kind of food but in vain???

A person in need could reject food too.

During the Tsunami that hit TN.many volunteers came from Punjab to help out..the Sardars made chapati and dhall for the people who lost their homes etc but the chapatis went to waste cos the TN makkal did not want to eat it and wanted rice!

So you see..even in a disaster people can become choosy.

Dear Renu,
They forgot the saying "Beggars cannot be choosers!"
But People of Punjab offered to cook what they know best.
These wretches who got chained to eating rice won't try something else even in a calamity.
May be the word used by KaLAignar Karunandihi to depict A TAMIZHAN IS RIGHT!

The lady I met the other day had a serious complaint.

Despite her cooking the choicest and tastiest dishes for her husband

he was always asking her to make 'miLagottal' - the way his mother used to do!

The iyengar boy/man who created revolution half a century ago by marrying a foreigner
still laments to this day that she can't make 'traditional puLiyOdharai!'

Her wants the best of both the worlds to satify his needs ...
A wife with a fair skin AND the traditional puLiyOdharai!

IF he loves puLiyOdharai so much he can lean to make it
and also share it with his fair wife! Right??? :)

Ladies fainting in the hot sun during the election meetings
is shown as an important news item everyday. :faint:

I felt faint while walking ~300 feet from the temple to my house! :dizzy:

What to say about the old ladies waiting under the hot sun for indefinite time?:flame:

There was a brief interlude between the closing of the thread

Think it over and the launching of the thread Think or sink!

During that time, my random thoughts what must have gone in to

either of these threads appeared as short Tamil poems in the thread

'A poem a day...' in the Literature section.

I happened to glance through them the other day!

I think it is nice to post them in the thread they actually belong to.

So there will be a recap of those poems in this thread during the next few days! :bump2:

The first time visitor to the Heaven on Earth U.S.A :plane:

for many months/ years after the visit invariably with
"Naan Americaa poyirunthappo....!" :blabla:

YET plane-loads of persons keep landing in USA
and every other country of the world everyday!

Time and Place are the two important info for conducting or attending any event.
In Tamil we say "Idam, PoruL, Eval"

Imagine a circular intimating about an important General Body meeting
without giving the TIME of the meeting!!!

Even when the Time is mentioned, people would arrive one hour late approximately.
Now they can do this and much more - without feeling guilty!

There are six slaves who enrich us with KNOWLEDGE all the time.

They are WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY and HOW!

Use these properly and you will know everything that needs to be known! :thumb:
