The question here is whether to consider the departure of the Atma or its continued presence in such situations.
Ozone,
Cause of our Karma , is our bonded nature. We associate ourselves with what is desirable to us. [Though shAstras, logic/science tell us what is agreeable to us].
There are very rich or healthy people, who commit suicide (due to illness or unbearable mental agony). Their actions say this 'I dont want to live'.
Except those cases of suicides, all others wish to live for long!
Recently in western news, there was this teen girl got bruised by an infected rope/knife during hiking. She just left it untreated. Within a fortnight, she felt excruciating pain and visited the emergency. She went unconscious, and woke up to find her leg and arm amputated (due to deadly virus). Her family thought, she would be heart broken, but her first words were 'Whatever it may be, I want to live'.
If we poll a question, 'What do you want to be in next life?' or even otherwise, most people are desirous of being born as a rich person,
or a model/actor, or one in the current family/lineage. Steve Jobs thought, his efforts, knowledge, intuition would go waste, if he gets no afterlife.
I heard in a discourse (on Garuda Puranam), that Yama dhutAs would show the preview of their future birth (as something better than this one - young and fresh or handsome or rich or elevated status etc.), to motivate the person/Jiva to let go of the attachment to the current body/life/relations.
Though all faculties fail (incl. their speech, eye-gaze, muscle movements of arms/legs), their desire to live must be still intact, until the last moment! [except those wanting to be free of bondage thru their self-realization].
Similar to the registrations for 'organ donations', the people should record their choice to get life support or not. (if they happen
to meet those unforeseen circumstances and if life-support is available/supportable). It is totally one's one choice.
