Politicians do lot of evil, film artist ACT as if destroying evil and NGOs help the society and do not destroy evil! :)

Temples for politicians and actors

Dear Renu,

There is a saying in Tamil: Kuzhandhaiyum Deivamum koNdAdum idaththil.

Children and Almighty exist in places where they are adored!

Humans THINK that God will exist only if He is adored. :hail:

Hence the temples, prayers, bhajans, decorations, festivals, neivEdhyams and so on............

God is the creation of Humans with his knowledge at that time. Everybody is aware, still just for example?

Had the God been recreated today? It is the wildest imagination.......
Prasad will be 1 Pizza, 1 Hamburger, 1 KFC chicken depending on Veg or Nonveg God; All sweets will be made with categorising such as diabetic non-diabetic
Screen will be opened by remote control
Aarti by LED lights
God will be having AK52 or AK47, Missiles.....
His Vahana will be Rocket
His dresses will be Jeans and T-shirts both for God/Goddess
The archana mantras will be Tamilish or Hindiish
Chariot will be Jaguar/BMW...
All Garbhagiruhas will be totally airconditioned with LED lighting
Many more like that
This is written in noway demeaning or degrading or denigrating anybody. Very sorry if you feel so.

But the basics of God is that who is not seeable but feelable (Paarka Mudiyadhu indha Oonakkannaal, Unaramudiyum indha Aatmaavaal) and who is invincible in every count ( this is how the child feels about his/her father/mother as the hero/heroin eventhough he/she may be tending to zero; he/she is the role model). We need a solace from our worries or we want to condition our mind to a certain direction to achieve (It is the word in 3 Idiots movie - All is Well)................ Many more to write.

Prof.D.V.R.Rajakumar

Dear Prof,

In Shiva Tandava Stotram the Phalshruti is whoever recites this would be blessed with horses, elephants, chariots etc..so at that time Ravana the composer of the Stotram was keeping up with times..

Whenever I used to sing this stotram I would imagine that the phalashruti can be changed to luxury cars, ships and private jets to keep up with the times.

So you see keeping up with times is actually accepted I feel.. otherwise why did Ravana say horses, elephants and chariots? He could have just stuck with bullockcarts or walking on foot.

Temples for politicians and actors

I think in western world these places will be called museums, in India they are termed Temple.
Going back to the op, I do believe in the Brahman, so that extent I am a theist. I do believe in trying to achieve the ultimate goal of salvation.
I do not understand this praising of God, or asking for favors of God, Or god giving boons etc.

These are all people who don't have self respect for themselves and mostly illiterate and not having any job other than participating in political party rallies..it is because of this only our actors and politicians are thriving instead of giving respect to intellectuals and good administtrators

It seems to me that no one even wondered about the validity of the proposition in the OP which is titled “Why is God portrayed as a Narcissists (sic)?

Definition of Narcissism :

1. Inordinate fascination with oneself; excessive self-love; vanity.
2. In Psychoanalysis: self gratification derived from admiration of one's own physical or mental attributes, being a normal condition at the infantile level of personality development.

Narcissism is a personality disorder in which a person is excessively preoccupied with vanity, personal adequacy, power, prestige , mentally unable to see the destructive damage they are causing to themselves and to others in the process. It is estimated that this condition affects one percent of the population. It is a form of severe egocentrism.

So, if human beings portray God as a Narcissist, it amounts to the humans judging God as having personality disorder. Do they really believe so? Something paradoxical.

Dear Naina Sir,

All Gods are not portrayed as a Narcissist according to the meanings given above.

May be, we can point out to Lord Krishna who praises Himself as the Doer of everything, in B G!

''It is I who remain seated in the heart of all creatures as the inner controller of all; and it is I who am the source of memory,

knowledge and the ratiocinative faculty. Again, I am the only object worth knowing through the Vedas; I alone am the origin

of Vedānta and the knower of the Vedas too. — Krishna; Chapter 15, verse 15”

What do you say, Sir? :)

P.S: One forum member has strong objection to depict Lord Krishna as God! :nono:

1. Krishna does not praise himself. It is the author of the BG who makes the statements.
Also, it was only in BG it happens. You have read Bhagavatam. You must know. A true
narcissist is constantly doing it, never realising the ridicule he/she invites.

2. This is the kind of attribution I have often seen in forums patronised by evangelicals .
The word itself is Western-defined, and so we cannot use it to describe Indian concepts.
Remember, according to Western ( not just evangelicals) definition, most Indians are
homosexuals, just because friends walk in public, holding hands.

Exactly! We humans judge God as having a personality disorder.

That is what I am talking about.

People only praise Kings/Mafia dons/Politicians/Movie stars partly becos they need to feed the Ego of these people in order to get favors or some position and Kings/Mafias?and the rest want the praise too.

In ancient courts many poets wrote poems to praise Kings for a favor...even if the King was ugly they would still praise him as handsome.

So may be humans were used to faking their emotions and praising others to gain favours and this rubbed on even to religious text cos most humans need to "humanize God" in order to connect to Him.

Most people pray to God for personal gain and not for God's sake so this thinking to praise Him in order to gain favors might not be all that sincere after all..its with ulterior motive.

But does God actually need all these praise?

Did He ask for it?

Why do we make God like as if He needs this praise and has a personality disorder?

Come to think of it praising God gives God a bad name when its actually humans who praise God for personal gain.

Actually this reflects a lot on our own state of mind..that is we are fake and say words of praise just for personal gain.

I browsed this thread quickly, did not fully understand the OP (what I understand I do not agree with) ..
Actually Mahabharatha is presented as a poem of almost 100000 verses (longest in the world).
The conversations are poetic with precise meter which means it did not happen exactly as portrayed- and for Hindus history is irrelevant.

Sri Krishna is presented as Bhagavan by an author by name Vyasa. Therefore in the entire Bhagavad Gita there is not a single verse that says 'Sri Krishna said (uvacha)' .. It is always presented as Bhagavan uvacha and that is deliberate. The historical person Sri Krishna is presented as Bhagavan and characteristics of what this Bhagavan is, is presented by Sri Krishna - in that sense there is no praise of any kind

A fact as presented is often interpreted by the human mind based on the person's (listener's) own biases (likes and dislikes - Raga and Dvesha) . If Bhagavan is portrayed as being the cause of all beings, only a human mind with its biases will say that Bhagavan is being proud.

We run into this in real life as well. Once I was selected to make myself available for a Jury based trial. As part of the process, the judge asks each of us to say our name, our educational qualifications in detail, our job/title/responsibilities, if we have relatives as Cops etc .

The place was full of blue collar workers for most part in this jury pool for selection. When my turn came I told the judge about having two Masters and a PhD etc , talked about my work role and answered all the questions he asked me. I was not selected for being too analytically inclined by the prosecution and in another instance by the Defense for another selection process (which was good for me since this was a huge distraction).

One of the person I was chatting with earlier int he day while waiting came up to me and said 'do you think you are a big shot and we are all nobody's' and I was surprised by his reaction..

Are you acting as a pro bono publico advocate for God, defending him against others tarnishing his image by praising Him for personal gain?!

When we read religious text somehow we get a feeling that its all about praising God and He is great..He is this and He is that.

I have no problems with praising God cos its man who is praising God and its not as if God asked men to praise Him.

The Vaishnava point of view goes real hardcore into praising God..especially ISKCON texts tend to praise Lord Krishna to be the ultimate and go on and on talking about His Mahima etc.

I was just wondering..why is God portrayed as a Narcissists that needs to be praised non stop by His Bhaktas?

When God is supposed to be beyond praise and blame why are we taught to keep praising God non stop?

Doesn't this actually give God a bad name? As if He really wants to be pleased and praised?

In the primitive times, the stronger person subdued all those who were weaker than himself/herself (probably ;)) and this trend continues even today, basically, what with some G-8 or G-20 group of the more powerful nations of the world setting the terms of behaviour and also internal governance for all the less powerful countries. (Of course, those who lay down the rules are above the rules they so make - for others!)

Gods and religions were invented by the imaginative human mind/s so as to create cult-like belief systems among people; perhaps this was the first step of formation of groups of people or "societies". Naturally, the Gods had to be the most powerful and also the most superlative in each and every item which those primitive minds (which created the religions) could think of. (As an example, if Krishna had his BG boasting of Ch. X, he might most probably have said things like "I am Bill Gates among IT people" or that "I am Obama among national heads"!) Naturally therefore, a lot of boasting by our many gods had to be built in into our scriptures and prayers.

The gullible, unquestioning devotees are also happy that their god/s are supremely powerful and draw a lot of solace from that fact since such a god will definitely be able to prevent anything wrong happening to them. But the moment a person starts analyzing religion in a rational manner, religion becomes வெங்காயம் as the person whose name must not be mentioned in this forum, rightly said. There are layers and layers but ultimately "nothing"!

Dear Renu,

Your Qs in black and my answers in blue. :)

Exactly! We humans judge God as having a personality disorder.

No, Renu!

That is what I am talking about.

People only praise Kings/Mafia dons/Politicians/Movie stars partly becos they need to feed the Ego of these people in order to get favors or some position and Kings/Mafias?and the rest want the praise too.

God is NOT praised for personal gains! He is praised for his greatness He is supposed to have!

In ancient courts many poets wrote poems to praise Kings for a favor...even if the King was ugly they would still praise him as handsome.

Gods and Goddesses are described by poets just as they are imagined by their creator!

For example, Krishna and Rama are not praised as a fair skinned Gods or Goddess Kali as having timid looks!

So may be humans were used to faking their emotions and praising others to gain favours and this rubbed on even to religious text cos most humans need to "humanize God" in order to connect to Him.

Some people will pray God ONLY if they have the hope of getting some gains. So this is a way to make such people pray!

Most people pray to God for personal gain and not for God's sake so this thinking to praise Him in order to gain favors might not be all that sincere after all..its with ulterior motive.

We praise our children to get their love and not for any material gains. Who will not wish to be loved by God!

But does God actually need all these praise? Did He ask for it?

Who can answer this except God Himself??!

Why do we make God like as if He needs this praise and has a personality disorder?

No one says that God asked humans to praise HIM! It is only our wish and done for our satisfaction!

Come to think of it praising God gives God a bad name when its actually humans who praise God for personal gain.

Actually this reflects a lot on our own state of mind..that is we are fake and say words of praise just for personal gain.

Oh Renu! You are totally confused!!
