Cooler Chennai this summer

Dear Renuka,

I mean humans can destroy and set right the harmony of nature which will unfold its own set of events. The former is not what the nature wants and I think happens for some reasons.

When I say humans actively direct the course of events I mean they are directly responsible for them.

Sravna..somehow you do not want to see the "truth"

Anyway I rest my case..have fun directing nature with the orchestra.May be play some Ragas to bring rain too.

Dear Auh,

Good points. Humans are in a unique position to actively direct the course of nature. This can be for good or for bad. What can be considered harmony is something we would have, that is not the result of short sighted actions. Many of the effects on the environment is because of humans not properly understanding the effects of their actions on it. So we may reasonably conclude that their actions have disturbed nature.

So what is right or not is dependent on whether harmony is being disturbed or restored.
climate change and global warming is a world wide phenomenon not restricted to chennai. you have more chances of a cyclone hitting chennai coast than heat in chennai. probably you can pray since you may not be to control it or take it s it comes. also you can shift to interior places to be away from it. thats is more useful thinking based on logic and reasoning. spirtuality may come to the rescue to face calamity when one has no control over what is happening and cannot control the pending events. Buying an AC to beat the heat may not be a bad idea . this is off season . you get discounted rates. buy an invertor also for power cuts.it should be of sufficient capacity for 6hrs shut down

Dear Shri Krish,

It all depends on whether you believe in God or not. You don't seem to. I do not have a problem with that.

dear sri sravna ji
God has nothing to do with climate change. this is a natural phenomenon. let us leave God alone .He might have other concerns on His mind
Praying gives you solace, so be it . Others can also join and perform yagna ,propitiate rain God for periodic rains in summer.
personally I have installed ACs and invertor in chennai to beat the heat.so I shared the info.
With best wishes

Dear Shri Krish,

I understand. It is actually an easy solution to beat the heat of Chennai. Everyone knows it works.

True faith in God is at its lowest. It actually doesn't matter if people do not have faith in God but if that makes them morally irresponsible which I think sooner or later will, and coerce the whole society that way, there lies the real danger and the necessity to check that from happening.

A society would be healthy if both the believers and the non believers are on equal footing so that there is not a surfeit of complacence in either of them. Actually it occurs to me if an incident such as praying to the divine power to set right an imbalance in nature does indeed yield result which I am personally confident it will, then there is scope for the vanishing faith in God among people to start surfacing again. That is one of the prime motivations behind this effort.

Really???How?? When we have no idea of what lies tomorrow in terms of life and death how can we actively direct the course of nature?

Sravna..Auh has raised very good points which you did not answer.

BTW during any Tsunami etc..the animal death toll is very less..see animals did not do any prayers and get together. They rely on their logical instinct which we humans sadly lost.

Animals are under constant slaughter by humans..So Karma theory again :)

Doesn't matter. Prayer to make it pleasant in my view will be heeded by the divine powers. Remember the climate has become worse in recent years because of man created reasons.

No such thing as divine powers. If so, we'd be witnessing ice skating and snowfall in Mecca or even Rajasthan.

While we desire and discuss about going for a mass prayer for a cooler summer at Chennai, why not we also attempt to reciprocate mother earth by protecting her,I mean restricting our destructive activities like mining, deforestation, polluting the rivers & water bodies, banning use of plastic, etc and implementing afforestation and the like? What is the initiative towards achieving this? How and where to start?

IMHO it will be just and necessary that a small initiative by each member will certainly go a long way in achieving this, like squirrels contributing their mite by bringing pebbles to construct Sethu Samudhram.
:)

Any thoughts?

It is my view Nature has a way of correcting itself to its original set-up. If there is heavy rain this year, then we
will have hot summer next year. But in general in Tamil Nadu this time of the year in the month of February we always have cool mornings and hot noons till "Sivarathri" what we call போக்குப்பனி . I hope and pray that it
continues this year also.

Dear sir,

I had earlier suggested that members take the initiative to plant, adopt and nurture a tree.

That itself is a form of prayer to the Earth.

It is not that I am against prayers etc but one has to be practical in life.

Just sitting down to pray without any action is of no use.

It is better we make prayers practical that is Action Oriented and make things work instead of just praying for God to help us when we do not help ourselves.

This weekend I have decided to plant a small tree in front of my house and make sure I maintain it.

So likewise I hope members might try this to make the world a cooler place.

Its not too hard to incorporate prayer into everything.

While planting the tree one can mentally recite Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavantu.

Just because you say "Loka Samastha something", it doesn't automatically solve the world's miseries. You'd be better off planting that small tree (you can only plant seeds or plants, really..or bonsais which people say is cruel..I once left a bonsai outside of the house in Chennai and it had become a big tree when I returned after a year..without pruning, bonsais grow big).

Doctor Mam,

I really appreciate and welcome this move.

IMHO the best thing is to adapt to the climate and go along with the nature. God, who governs the climate has also created us in such a way and he knows the best. And the Vedanta says, we will get what we deserve.

As prayer costs nothing, we can pray too with all steadfast faith without anticipating results

But, start planting trees, promote eco-friendly things like discarding use of plastic bags, etc etc.. which acts will certainly yield the desired effect definitely in the long run.

Towards this end, I used to carry bag along with me whenever I go for shopping and my vehicle has minimum two bags stored.

Regards

Instead of using 'vehicle', use a bicycle or public transportation.

We too have environmentalist among us. See one Member has already decided to plant a sampling in front of her house. A small beginning in deed. Great movements start only with a small beginning. Let this spirit grow. Good start..

Dear Renu,

About fifteen years back, our road (80 feet width) was chosen to plant trees on either side of the compound gate of each house.

The residents were requested to pour water to the saplings and grow them. All except two residents removed the sapling after

a few days. Reason given: The dried leaves will fall, more during autumn and servant maid will demand more money for cleaning!

Now, we have the two trees grown so huge that the branches form one tree almost touches our first floor window! The roots are

so big that lots of bumps and cracks have formed in the cemented area which is in between the gate and the road!

P.S: The trees hide the street lights and the shade enables the lovers to meet after dusk! Free show for us!!

Even though we may pray for just a cooler Chennai, I think there will be perfect logic behind the change. If logic dictates it we may see the change for the whole of India or even the whole world. Also the logic behind the change may be through our own attitude to environment. I am happy a severe critic of our approach, Smt.Renuka has taken the first step in this direction by planning to plant a tree.

Let us pray and hope that the change happens and what is more important is the change to happen than the way it happens.

LOL!

Sravna .. I am not a severe critic of any approach..I am just giving practical suggestions.

now that renukaji has planted a tree ,will sravna ji accept her practical suggestion and buy an AC unit? .we are keenly watching

Dear Shri Krish,

You have missed the point. The fact that Renuka plants a tree will help me in not having to buy an AC unit.

Dear Sir,

I hope you do not own, or travel by motorized forms of transport. That way, you show your deep and abiding respect towards nature, while also reducing your carbon footprint. Trees are useful because:
- they provide shade
- they provide nesting sites for birds, and hive sites for the bees
- men can quickly sneak to take a leak behind trees
- almost all telugu and hindi movies revolve around a hero, heroine, and a tree around which they dance and prance
- one can climb them
- one can also chant the cool cool hymns under the cool shade of trees

Ratna Fan House is having a huge air-conditioner sale in case the hymns backfire..fire..heat..

Dear Ash,

If you have been reading my posts you would understand that I am not totally against modern way of life. Embrace it externally but not let it corrupt you. I really do not understand why people think pragmatism and being true to values and culture need be contradictory. Timeless values can sync with any time.
