Cooler Chennai this summer

Cooler Chennai this summer.

Instead of using 'vehicle', use a bicycle or public transportation.

Is it possible to use bicycle in today's traffic? No, I don't think so.
Though not relevant to the main subject of the thread, I wish to share my following thoughts.
When I was a student I used to travel all over Coimbatore on bicycle only. Distance was not a problem. The roads were having less traffic. Similarly when I came to Bangalore I in 1966, initially, I was using bicycle, then changed to a Lambretta Scooter. I never had any problem in commuting all over the city with my wife on the pillion for shopping. Today, Unfortunately our public transport system has not improved to the extent of increase in the population. Bangalore is one of the fastest growing Metropolis in the World with a population of 9.645 million (2011) a growth of 47.18% during 2001-2011.

Regarding planting of trees , first I must admit that I am not against trees. But the Roads should be planned for planting avenue of trees. Most of our Roads are laid 25' or 40' in width. That is just adequate for passing of two vehicles. If trees are planted on one side it will take away minimum of 5' of the road. Other side another 3-5' will be taken away by Electric Poles. This is an unending problem. Bangalore has experimented all sorts of improvement for Roads including broadening of Roads, one way traffic, flyovers , aerial roads etc. Interestingly many study reports on this subject are available for solving the ever increasing problems. But, nothing has been implemented due to practical difficulties. Periodically people's views are published in the local papers like "Citizen Matters" in Bangalore.

In one could ride bicycles in delhi of fifties and early sixties.
there was also a lot of greenery, trees in lutyens delhi
now trees are getting cut to make way for wider roads, flyovers . the metro have removed hundreds of trees and planted them elsewhere in outskirts on directions of supreme court. delhi has become a concrete jungle. beside even growing plants in pots is frowned upon as it is felt watering them in houses is leading to dengue and other diseases in residential colonies.greenery is now a dream .

Even in places like Chandigarh which used to have lot of round about in the 80's & 90's with greenery in the center have been demolished to make way for traffic signals...We have to rue the vehicle/population explosion for this

If we plant trees today on road borders, we will have to pull them down when solar powered vehicles mob the roads. We need roads and trees. A balanced approach to green environment is necessary, but there is no single way or only way for this.

You are right. Using a bicycle in school and college days was a pleasure; it is very risky now both for the riders and motorists.

We never covered head or face when cycling in the sun; now face and head covers are the norm for all especially for ladies, despite availability and use of sunscreens and fairness unguents.

Everyone has to find a solution for himself for reduced use of energy and production of waste without compromising on 'his/hers' quality of life. Reduce, reuse, recycle is a good mantra to be applied every time.

If God is kind enough to reduce the temperature in Sing. Chennai by a few degrees Celsius, we should be happy!

Krish Ji,

When I was at Delhi during 2000-2003, I used to see avenue trees at both sides of important roads. During mornings, I used to go for walking, play shuttlecock and do yoga at the nearby park. Whenever we visit temple by walk, we used to cross through two or three parks,as short cut,to reach the temple. The area is Janakpuri and Mayapuri. I believe Delhi has more parks when compared to Chennai.

Dear RR ji,

Suddenly the temperatures here are soaring and we have not had rain for almost 1 month now.

Its very unusual cos we are rain and shine all year long.

I wonder if Sravna is shifting the heat here!LOL

There is a relevant story. One musician performed in the king's court. He was suitably rewarded and asked to perform next year. He complied with the request and gave another sterling performance next year. The king commented - I enjoyed your music more this year; you have improved a lot. The musician replied in a polite tone - Your highness, my performance is the same, only your understanding and knowledge has grown in one year.

We never complained about the heat forty years ago; walked bare foot to schools, played cricket in blazing sun (without caps). Even elders grumbled occasionally.

Heat is the same, only our tolerance level is reduced. Even ceo's office was not air conditioned in the late sixties.

Senior citizens seldom worry about heat because they can stay at home during daytime! :couch2:

I wonder if the musician ever sang again after having implied that the King was lacking in knowledge and understanding before and only now he gained some knowledge.

Risky way to talk to a King...he might say "off with his head"

The better way is to say:

"Your majesty..My performance might remain the same but God has blessed you with knowledge and understanding that grows day after day"

BTW Sarang ji..temperatures have gone up..when I was young even the hottest day never used to go beyond 29 C but now it goes up to even 40C.

Brahmanyan,

All these initiatives dont matter when people are unruly and reckless. Overshooting signals, driving in footpaths , driving on wrong direction are all common norms . I am not talking about auto or bus wallahs, i am talking about he educated IT public. First people should change, then everything else will change. My hatred towards North Indians have increased after the part they played in destroying this beautiful city.

You are right about parks. delhi luckily had a master plan in sixties where areas were marked out for parks in every zone. even these are not lighted to protect the environment. this is the saving grace. but it would not be advisable for senior citizens and single women to go to them at odd hours due to safety concerns.

Let us get the best out of God. While we pray for lower temperatures let us also pray for a less violent, less corrupt, more clean, more innovative and more assertive India.

Sir, i fully agree with you in praying and prayers can do anything. But what about action ( Karma) ? Which is powerful ? Prayer or Action? I have experienced prayers influencing my actions ( even external factors) to my benefit, but there always a different view around.

Dear Sravna,

A few days ago I was reading a sanskrit poem where the poet was saying :

Thou art Ocean of Mercy..
We seek to be sprinkled by ocean spray,
To cleanse us from sins,
May You have mercy on us.

I was thinking to myself that poor God! We screw up and expect Him to clean up our mess.

May be God might reply:

You good for nothing people
I gave you a brain yet you screw up and expect me to be a Yelichavaiyan and bail you guys each time.
Go to hell guys!

What I am trying to say ..we should not be making use of God..its high time we give God some respect but not asking Him to bail us out when screw things up and do not do anything to rectify it.

Prayer involves belief in God and acknowledging that there are things which we ourselves cannot accomplish. Your ego is less at work at that time and indicates you are on the right track. All actions and the corresponding reactions also serve the same purpose , that of lessening the ego. It is probably the effect of your karma that makes you believe totally in God and pray to him.

Such persons to my experience and knowledge pray more for the common good than for self and the former much more likely to be granted by God because it promotes harmony

OK how many of you think that a less violent, less corrupt, more clean, more innovative and more assertive India is possible. I think not many have an optimistic view of future for India . Most of whom if not all I talk to only say that India will never progress and is doomed. Let us say a few percent think in a positive way. To think in a positive way needs belief in us. To come out of this vicious cycle of non belief and no progress we need some extraordinary help. I think this is where prayer can help. Once that belief happens, it might trigger events that could push India ahead.

We were totally brainwashed by alien forces and so now we cannot think ourselves. I think we can come out of it only if God wills for it.

Now you profess belief in aliens. Next is UFOs? LOL
