Cooler Chennai this summer.
Is it possible to use bicycle in today's traffic? No, I don't think so.
Though not relevant to the main subject of the thread, I wish to share my following thoughts.
When I was a student I used to travel all over Coimbatore on bicycle only. Distance was not a problem. The roads were having less traffic. Similarly when I came to Bangalore I in 1966, initially, I was using bicycle, then changed to a Lambretta Scooter. I never had any problem in commuting all over the city with my wife on the pillion for shopping. Today, Unfortunately our public transport system has not improved to the extent of increase in the population. Bangalore is one of the fastest growing Metropolis in the World with a population of 9.645 million (2011) a growth of 47.18% during 2001-2011.
Regarding planting of trees , first I must admit that I am not against trees. But the Roads should be planned for planting avenue of trees. Most of our Roads are laid 25' or 40' in width. That is just adequate for passing of two vehicles. If trees are planted on one side it will take away minimum of 5' of the road. Other side another 3-5' will be taken away by Electric Poles. This is an unending problem. Bangalore has experimented all sorts of improvement for Roads including broadening of Roads, one way traffic, flyovers , aerial roads etc. Interestingly many study reports on this subject are available for solving the ever increasing problems. But, nothing has been implemented due to practical difficulties. Periodically people's views are published in the local papers like "Citizen Matters" in Bangalore.

Instead of using 'vehicle', use a bicycle or public transportation.
