Dear Ashwin,

Your posts echoed your mind that in your young age itself you suffered a lot. You are still young and you need lot of experience to understand the world. In one of your posts, you were mentioning about Russia, China, West. Those people, gradually started knowing/understanding about our culture and they are coming to India in great numbers seeking peace, which they could not get in their own cities. Don't worry, there will be a day in your life, you certainly going to feel the cool hands of The Almighty on your head protecting you from the evil. In the present century itself, I can count you many people, who were staunch aethists and later became great followers. One such example is late Kavinger Kannadasan.

Please do'nt get frustrated. At present you follow your path. The time will come and you will automatically change your course.

Anbudan,
Raaghavan

Dear Ash:

Personally, I have deep faith in His mysteries, but of late, my faith has been severely shaken by an unending series of sad and unhappy events. Some people advise me to change my residence for a change in fortunes. Some advise me to even change my religion (LOL). Right now, I'm hoping God will be kind enough to shower His mercies on me, I'm wondering if I should consider my trials and tribulations as blessings rather than troubles.

Only time will tell..

My deep condolences of your dad passing away and your reactions are similar to mine, when my mom passed away, all of a sudden, at a young age of only 59. Until that time, I never knew that death could be just a phone call away. She was in India, and I was away abroad, when I got the call I was watching world series base ball, and I kept watching, not because I continued to enjoy the game, but I was in denial that something that terrible, a mom passing away, could happen. It took many long months for me to come out of that tragedy, and it is said that time is the greatest healer, and after many years, I still get the pang of my mom passing away. We talk about science and modern comforts in life, I only knew her toiling in the kitchen, having to take care of so many siblings, a husband and his parents and many many relatives. I could even now see her grinding in the manual stone grinder a boat load of maavu for the night dosa for the humpteen people in the house...she didnt have a lousy grinder!! I could buy her a hundred grinders today, but it does not mean a thing. I can only regret that I and my family were more supportive when she needed help, but that again doesnt mean a thing now.

Close to this tragedy, few of my very close relatives, young ones at that, died in accidents and ill health. I wanted the whole world to stop, wanted to bash up every plane, train and any vehicle I saw on the road, went into a shell, and the concept of God didnt have any meaning, never went to the temple for a long time, I simply questioned God's existence and hated Him!!

Guess what, life goes on....that is what the life is all about, same thing will happen to I and you, and our children will probably react the same way. My mom, until her last day, was a staunch devotee of Sai Baba and worshipped Him every day!! She used to tell me the incredible experiences she has seen of Him, personally to her and our family, and I have seen it myself, I have no words to explain or comprehend how so many incredible things can happen. I promise you, I and my entire family are normal people, not delusional, one of my brother's is a leading nuclear physicists who was in the cover page of Time magaine many years ago, we are all professionals and we know what is delusional, imaginary!! If I recount those experiences, they will be ridiculed, made into equations and quotients and made mockery....Many other members of this forum may have gone through similar experiences and I believe they are very personal, you hold on to things that are dear to you.

What all I am saying Ash is, no one says life is fair, it looks like a game today; dont we call it 'its a doggy dog world'?; as a society we have gone away from the basics, although we all know death is inevitable, many miseries are brough on by ourselves. May be all of us need to do a lot of introspection, go back to basics to lead a simple life of hard work, contentment, service to the needy, life filled with love and kindness to kith and kin and everyone around!! It does not seem too hard, we are simply worried such a life may put us behind everyone in wealth and prosperity, I guess it is upto each one to set priorities and live a life that makes sense!!!

It is certainly not advise, just loud thinking, dont get me wrong, I just wanted to echo your feelings at your time of despair, I am sure your father has left you a lot of wonderful memories that you can carry his legacy by, and life goes on!!!!

God Bless Ash!!

And just recently, my grandmother's been diagnosed with terminal cancer. She, who came to Mumbai from down south with Rs 20, is now worth a lot in monetary terms owing to sheer dint of hard work. Dear Ash:

Why does god have to grant someone money? Why can't a person earn money by dint of hard work?

I got the following list of MK'saccumulated wealth from what I think is a credible source. I cannot vouch forany of this, but even if 10% of this were to be true, do you think 'God' gavethem to MK? Did he or any of his members, do you think, worked for one day, todeserve any of this?
I know of several members of this forumsuch as Kunjuppu, may glorify MK for what he did for anti-brahminism, but wasthat a real accomplishment? Dont we know every rupee of the ill-gotten moneyrepresents rivers of tears unwiped, that MK and other TN politicians, conveniently disown...If they had any conscience that you are questioning, theycould have saved the naked and hungry children that run around in the middle ofthe nights, the old and frail men who still have to pull loads of rickshaws tobuy few morsels of rice or even to buy a quarter of liquor to drown theirsorrow, or the old women who make platforms their make-shift homes to cook indim lights amid filth, dirt and diseases...when did fighting anti-brahminismtake more importance than fighting poverty and diseases......

Dear Sri ashwin-ash Ji,

You have said:
It is terrible to see her slipping away, I avoid her on most days. If God made her the chancellor of a university, why is the same god making her die cell by cell?

I did not want to comment earlier. However, seeing these words, I have to. Hope what am saying makes some sense.

1. Please do not think about yourself at this time with respect to your Grandmother. Think about how to make her forget her disease vis-a-vis you. This is the greatest gift you can give her back, not avoiding her (unless she likes you avoiding her).

2. The answer about 'God' is in your question. God does not do anything to make one a Chancellor nor does make a person suffer. In Hinduism, we believe in 'making our own beds' over several births, accumulating good and bad karmas from our own actions that affect our current lives. God has nothing to do with this directly, but that is how He/She/It has set up the system. Other religions have other beliefs, regarding this. God is nothing but the source we came from and eventually will return to. We are forever connected to that source, as well as everything in the Universe. Different people understand this connection differently based on their mental/emotional/spiritual capacities and needs. So, the atheists believe that connection is not to a 'GOD', but lies in the moral conduct dictated by 'rationality'. Others believe that that connection is symbolized by what they see in nature. Others believe in worshiping personal Gods to bring peace of mind. Others do the same to ask for favors from their 'Gods'. I am with the crowd that believes in a non personal God that is within ourselves. All forms of trying to understand our connection to our source are all perfectly rational as they all rise out of the human condition. So who is right? Does it really matter? Life or Samsara is hard living and Dhukkam is our constant companion. Everyone around us will die off, so will we. In this type of human condition, let people be with their multiplicity of faiths, as long as they do not hurt others. This is my belief after having lived on this earth for 65 years.

For yourself, pick any path that explains the connection to your source and start mending your mind and soul.

Hope you do not mind my two cents.

Regards,
KRS

Hi Ashwin:

Perhaps you had chance to read my posts.

I am a 60 yr old guy initially from Ramanathapuram district in TN (a village called Panaikulam - Palmyra Pond/Tank) and now comfortably settled in Houston (since 1979) with two grown up kids (S = 27 and A = 22, who is a Rhodes Scholar-Elect).

I hail from a very orthodox Believer family. Once I became 20/21, I proclaimed to be an Atheist.

I have categorically said that some MEN created all Religions, which created all Gods and Ghosts...

Therefore, nothing is in the hands of any Super-Natural Agent standing somewhere in the Universe, dictating ALL events in the world, period.

Everything is in YOUR hands and in YOUR head! Lol.

My work philosophy is

1. Work harder than anybody around me (I sleep only for about 6 hr a day for the past 40 years!)
2. Dream as to what kind of life I want
3. Relentlessly work towards that Dream.
4. With some luck, I WILL attain that Dream. Nay.. I have ATTAINED the Promised Land of Freedoms: I have now the Social, Political and Economic Freedoms... I said jokingly that I have attained the Moksha! Lol :)

I may die tomorrow or in about 20 years! I just don't care... I want to Dance to my own Drum Beat...I make my own Destiny and kiss my own kismet! LOL. :)

People say I am FEARLESS about any God, Ghost or Authority. I obey the laws of Nature and laws of the Land.

Many events in life happen randomly. That's the so-called Murphy's Law. Just live with it.

I don't worry too much about "spilled milk" or "broken glass"... I just move on to other things in life.

I enjoy every minute of everyday!

I WANT to be a Winner... by working very hard! LOL.

Therefore, I just advise you to take charge of YOUR life, Dream about a Promised Land, and relentlessly work towards that Dream.

You Shall Get What You Want....

Take care.

Cheers.

:)

Dear Servall: Ref post 1804

I am curious to know why you go after ONLY Mu Ka, why not J Jaya also?

Why not Arun Jaitley and Yedd'appa of Karnataka also?

On record, I admire Kalaigner Mu Ka for his enormous contribution to Tamil literature and Tamil Cinema, but I hate him as a Politician for the nepotism in his Party.

Is he MORE corrupt than J Jaya? Probably NOT...:)

I like A. Raja and Kani because they were incarcerated against the Constitution for whatever "Crime" allegedly they committed...

Regards.

Almost everyone here sleeps 6 hours or even less becos of job and time constrain.

How do you really want God to be? Death is inevitable and can come in any form.
Why is the need to attribute every cause of death to God?
Even Ramakrishna Paramahansa had Cancer? Did He even once blame God for His state?
All He uttered is the name of God and left all of us a legacy of golden words.
Despite being in pain..all He spoke is nectar.

Why are you avoiding your grandmum? Is it becos you cant bear to see her?
This is the time one should be at her side and making her happy to see you shower love on her.
That will ease her pain and your pain too.

Ok coming to meeting someone who has seen God?Why do you need someone else to confirm that God exists?
The question is yours..so why dont you seek the answer yourself?

Hi Renuka:

I have a Second Opinion on that: MDs ("Sleep Specialists") here recommend a full 8 hours as "Normal"! LoL or ROFL.

Try sleeping 8 hours..its not possible as we grow older..by 7 hours body will automatically wake up and if you force yourself to sleep till 8 hours..you will feel the overslept feeling and whole day will be screwed.

Anyhow the last time I slept 8 hours is at the age of some 15 I guess.
Normally its 6 hours or may be on holidays its 7.

Precisely Y, speaking just for myself, I rather be a "normal" loser than a "winner" who can only sleep 6 hours and on top of it work really hard. Paraphrasing Michael Jackson, I am a sleeper not a winner. I want my 8 to 9 hours of sleep every night, thank you very much.

Cheers!

Mr. Yamaka can you help us define who is a winner? I think figuring out the answer to that question itself is an achievement.

Hi Biswa:

You are the Judge to pick the Winner in you!

It all depends on the Dreams you have and the Promised Land you want to go! How hard you work to attain that Land!!

When you finally achieve what you set out to achieve, then clearly you are the Winner!

I hate to "feel as a loser". I am honest with you I just can't stand that feeling... a feeling of being defeated by some other force beyond my control.

I wanted to marry the girl I wanted and loved, I did it... I want to climb up in the ladder of Career. I did it.. I wanted to raise healthy smart kids in a Secular household. I did it... and I am moving ahead towards that Promised Land of Satisfaction...and the horizon is moving ahead of me... I am enjoying the ride! ROFL

I hate wallowing in self pity.. or someone else'

Take care.

:) :)

ps. Folks: Just call me Y, Yams or Yamaka! No Mr, Sir, Ji, Dr etc etc. please. :)

Whether God exists or not is a matter of conjecture. If I've seen god, does it mean god really exists? Conversely, if I haven't seen god, does it mean god doesn't exist?

I haven't seen god, but if someone else has, it will answer many peoples' questions about religion and God's existence.

Dear Sri Yamaka,

Looks like you have accomplished everything in life that you wanted to accomplish. Congratulations!

'I did it' is a bit disconcerting to me. Not because I doubt that you did it. Even in your world of no God, you must admit that you were lucky, as the random flip of the coin of life might have landed tails when you called for heads.

As I have said before, hard work alone will not propel one to success. Hard work and TALENT in something you want to pursue will take you places. It is your luck (or destiny from my perspective) that has put you where you are.

You are an exception than a rule. Many of your fellow human beings do not even have the capacity to understand what talents they have or to how to channel them towards accomplishing something.

May I dare say, you must have a 'good' horoscope! :)

Regards,
KRS

Sri Yamaka has only one thing to look forward to now, go in peace now that all his dreams have been achieved :bounce:

Yams,

I also married who I wanted(my husband was the best pick from all the Mappilais that came)
I wished to become a doctor and I studied for it and I did.
I also raised a nice good child.

Most people are also in the same boat as you..we are happy with life.
I dont give the thought of losing out to anything in life cos I never view life as a competition.
I view life as a journey and we are tossed up and down with waves of pleasure and displeasure sometimes..what is there to feel so winning about?

You know when I first open my own clinical practice many of my friends(co docs) told me "renu you must so proud of yourself isnt it..that at the age of 33(i was 33 then) you have your own practice and a career woman"

I told them honestly "No I dont feel pride of achievement..I planned this and just carried out my plan and with the grace of God it went fine"

My friends dont feel the way I feel..most of them feel very proud of their achievement and some even brag about it.

I always feel we came with empty hands and go with empty hands..what we bury our hands into is transient and will fall off from us just like how a water droplet rolls of a lotus leaf..so just be hardworking and enjoy life within limits and leave our success for the next generation to enjoy and just exit when its time up.

In other words..just do our duty..I dont feel we have to be proud of doing our duty.
Duty is a reflex in life.

Dear KRS:

I am aware of the criticism of "I did it"!!! That's what most of the Believers have told me!!

My parents, as I said many times, were quite conservative and prayed God for all day everyday, and they raised me as a Believer...

Once I left home for College (to Madura College) I started asking "tough questions" and I got the RIGHT answers regarding Religions, Gods and Ghosts!!

I started standing on "my own feet". I take FULL responsibility to my life: both good and bad.

If I succeed I have EARNED it, and if I fail that too I have EARNED it. That's why that "I did it" comes in! LOL.

I refuse to live the way my parents lived. I just don't follow anything they did in their life.

I changed and re-engineered the daily life.

My fellow human beings CAN achieve their full potential. If they really want to:

Dream the Dream of their Life, acquire the skills required and give 110% of their efforts in achieving that Dream.

No concept of God, Ghosts and Religions REQUIRED here!

Regards.

:)

ps. Let's leave Astrology and horoscope alone for now at least! LOL

Renu:

Your post 1819 tells me you are also a winner. And, I agree there are many winners around.

You want to attribute your success to your "Grace of God" because you are a Believer in the Super Natural Agent.

For me, such Agent is totally ABSENT... then that forces me to take CREDIT for all the good and bad happen to me, for I am a Non-Believer in that Super Natural Agent.

Where's the problem?

:)

Dear Yams,

There is no winner or loser in reality. Its just roles we take on in life.
I am not saying this becos things have gone right most of the while.
Things have gone wrong too once in a while and I work hard to correct it.

I have this one habit of attributing everything to God..I feel if its good its Karma/Gods grace and if its bad its my Karma too and rectifying something bad to become good is Karma too(after all Karma is action).

I wouldnt want to classify myself as a winner at all cos we never know tomorrow and life is still not over yet.
I consider myself a pawn in the chess board of life.

Dear Sri Yamaka,

I understand your triumphs. In my life I have done similar things like you and what Srimathi Renuka Ji has said. I also come from difficult circumstances, had $8 when I arrived in the USA 40 years ago, married the love of my life and have prospered. In fact I have lived in Houston (Clearlake and the Woodlands), and am living barely 4 hours from Bellaire in Dallas. I also have four very successful and accomplished children with two beautiful grand children to boot!

But when I carefully examine my life milestones, they all happened despite my efforts.

I did not in anyway intend to minimize your accomplishments. You have every right to them. Just, in my case, I think my life accomplishments are due to providence.

You may call it 'luck'.

Regards,
KRS

That's your CHOICE.

You may fail or win again tomorrow. So what? If you fail, pick yourself up, introspect and move on licking your wounds...

It's all how you FEEL about events around you.

I feel I can make things happen, whereas Believers WAIT for things happen by the "Grace of God" or "Providence" or Luck or Whatever.

Yes, Luck matters... and that Luck comes to people who are fully prepared, I think.

You know how I feel about the so called Karma (action) in this life time: That's the Action or the Decision to Act, which determines the outcome... bad decisions lead to bad outcomes by the definitions of "good" and "bad".

And, Janma Poorva Karma is totally a hoax, as I have said many time to the utter disgust of the Believers here.

That's me, Yamaka = Atheist!

:)

Point to ponder..I entered the workforce at the age of 20. My work's taken me all around the world, but I didn't save any. Lived in the States for like 4 years, and had to return to India due to unavoidable circumstances. In spite of my efforts (won't quantify efforts as best or worst), life's only dealt me one bum rap after the the other. The learned ones say "mesha rasi" "vasthu" this and that.

I've been without a job for 7 months now, and I don't want to really share my miseries. Some say I'm "overqualified" for a job, some say they can't "afford" my salary. Whatever, my life's not really panned out the way I envisaged. So much so, I've simply stopped applying for jobs since the past month or so, much to the chagrin of everyone. Can Yams say I'm the quintessential "LOSER" as opposed to winner?

Or am I caught in a vortex of unfortunate circumstances? Introspection also leads nowhere, I'm still where I am.
