Let's objectively see the effect of Prayers

Dear Folks,

I do not know about the rest of you. But I couldn't spend time in the last week of Feb for prayers. I am sorry for that. We will continue our efforts for the rest of summer and hopefully we will see the change for good.

Feb was not bad. The ave temp during the 20 days of prayers was close to 30 compared to the average of 31 during that period in general. We will make our target a little more ambitious and pray for an average of 30 degrees for March.

I am sure we will succeed,

Dear Sravna,

True prayer is not solely the act of praying...hence you feel that you could not make time for prayer.

True Prayer is coordination of Thought,Word and Deed..we need to put this in auto pilot more and fly the skies..once we take off there is no return..that is true prayer.
 
We see Shiva meditating in pictures. I suppose he is meditating on Brahman. I do not think he worries about getting a boon from Vishnu, or winning the next election. I am sure he is not worried about prayers during February either.

perhaps because of your prayers chennai is getting good weather.
delhi has a lot of irreligious paavigal. we had wild unseasonal rains with snow in upper reaches. it spoilt the crops. winter instead of tapering has got extended by 2 or 3 weeks.

Sravna Ji,

While I appreciate your faith on the effects of prayers, I will be happy if these prayers are aimed at for good and deserving causes also.

IMO, seasons are nature and in Chennai, North East Monsoon sets sometime in October and we do have heavy rain, occasionally inundation too, resulting in few deaths. But as far as I know, I have not heard of many deaths due to sun stroke in peak summer when compared to North East Monsoon. So, that way, definitely summer is much harmless.

Besides, when compared to other cities for example Delhi, Chennaities experience a moderate climate. In Delhi it is mostly extreme in both the cases.

So, we are blessed and should thank the God for this.

My appeal is to add good causes too, experience the power of prayer and thus try to serve to the society we belong.

Great going! The temp was down to 30 degrees today. This time of the year it usually doesn't come down to 30. In fact in the last 10 years it has never happened and in the last 18 years it has happened only once. Let's keep it down to 30 - 31 for the rest of the month.
 
Another interesting and encouraging piece of statistic. Today's max temp was 31 degrees. In the past 20 years only once has the max temp been below 32 degrees on Mar 10. I think the temp has been moderate so far. Till now it has not crossed 31. But we will have to wait for the big months of April, May and June to really test the effect of prayers. Let's keep praying and hope for the best.

Dear Sravna,

If you really want to spend time praying for the temperature to come down some 1 to 2 degrees why dont you channel your prayers for some life saving efforts after all no one dies at a temperature of 35 to 40C. I have friends in New Delhi who live thorough a summer of 45 C and a winter of 7 C.

I am sitting here in my clinic and the outside temperature is some 35 C and with Haze and dry weather..no rains and water rationing ..I get water in my house now only every 2 days cos right now the absence of rains has affected the water reserves..and I am still alive and I am not dead.


So I do hope if you believe that the power of prayer actually works..kindly sit and pray that the missing Malaysian airline plane is found.

Yes Renuka you are right. We have heard about the power of prayers but most of us have not directly seen them. So this was an effort for everyone to see that power. But you are right that there are more urgent and worthier causes. Let us try to address them one by one. I strongly believe that specific and focused efforts give better results than praying for general good. That was the reason I suggested prayers for eradicating rape, murder, violence and corruption. Even in kali yuga things have to quieten down after wickedness and evil peaks. I think it is as bad as it can be under the garb of a civilized world and it is high time something is done about it by those who believe in the divine power.

But if you hold a candle up in the darkest amavasya night and claim that it will as bright as the mid-day sun, i wish you good luck, but that would be less than genuine.

Dear Shri Sravna,

I am not familiar with modern things, but I think prayers can be considered as something like debit card. Only if there is a balance in the bank account can a person have any use of the debit card; otherwise it is just a worthless piece of plastic. In a similar way, only if one has adequate balance of "punyas" or good deeds his/her prayers will fructify. If the balance of punya is inadequate the prayer cheque will bounce. But, fortunately, the law in this matter has not yet made it a criminal offence to pray without punya (just as issuing cheques without adequate funds is, today.).

Our puranas also contain stories relating to our maharshis losing their powers acquired by tapas by cursing or granting boons to others. Thus praying for things like a lowering of 1 or 2 degree temperature in Chennai for one or two months, etc., is a ludicrous idea. Please do not squander away your acquired punyas in such ways. In the end even most fervent prayers will not be substitute for punya or results of good karmas. What you are doing is foolish karma which has the same effect as bad karma.

Sorry if my blunt advice is not to your liking.
