HRUDHAYAVASA.
In the court of the Kauravas was brought in Draupati, the wife of the Pandavas. The Pandavas have gambled and lost their wife Draupati to the Kauravas. Duryodhana, the king of the Kauravas ordered his brother Duchadhana to remove Draupati’s cloth . Duchadhana proceeded as per the order and started to remove the clothing off poor helpless Draupati, as the elders of the court and her five husbands, the pancha pandavas were witnessing the horror committed.
In complete despair, she finally called out Lord Krishna for help. In her shrill voice as the entire courtroom vibrated she screamed out for Krishna with all His glorious sobriquets, “Oh dear Kanna.., Madhusudhana.., Trivikrama.., Padmanabha.., Govindha.., Pundarikasha.., Krishna.., Kesava.., Sankarshana.., Vasudeva…, Purushottama.., Atchudha.., Vaamana.., Damodharaa.., Sridhara…“.
But there was no response from Krishna immediately as one would expect to happen. Only after a while when Draupati chanted another one of Krishna’s name, namely “Dwaraka vasa., come save me”, Lord Krishna immediately appeared in the courtroom and catered her with more robes, covering her over while Duchadhana kept de-robing her, thus saving her from the predicament.
On a later day, a curious Draupati questioned Lord Krishna on why he took so long to come save her while the Kauravas were harassing her. The mischievous Lord Krishna gave a loud laugh and exclaimed, “Oh dear sister Draupati, you called out for me with all my different names (namas), and finally called out for me with the name ‘Dvaraka vasa’ (one who dwells in the city of Dwaraka). Don’t I have to travel from Dvaraka to reach you? And that is why it took me a while to reach you! If only you had used my namah ‘Hrudhaya vasa’ (one who dwells in the heart) and called out for me the first time, I would have appeared instantly out of your heart and saved you without any delay!“
Lord Sri Krishna insists on his followers to keep Him closer to their hearts if they would want Him to always be with them and guide them through all the mayas (illusions) of worldly miseries.
