nothing wrong with your living model after retirement of parents or in laws living close to children. living under the same roof has its own issues which married children or parents may not relish though it has its plus points. one negative aspect is what happens if one of the parents unfortunately passes away . then in that case the other parent is left alone helpless. ....

children or parents may not relish though it has its plus points. one negative aspect is what happens if one of the parents unfortunately passes away . then in that case

the other parent is left alone helpless. bonding later on and integrating with childrens family after years of childrens marriage becomes more difficult. in many cases

women outlive men as there is an age

difference between senior married men and women which increases the chances of man dying earlier.

of course the ultimate comfort level between generations , varies from family to family and there are no ready made solutions.

all of us aspire for independant living as long as possible . how much we are able to realise it is a matter which we can only time can tell
hi

nice words...well said....

It is totally wrong to assume that when one partner passes away, the other is totally helpless. We have single Males and Females staying alone in Retirement Communities.

One of the major aspects to be looked into while choosing a Retirement Community is whether one can stay alone.

dear nacchi sir

one lady in US faced this in coimbotore when her mother suddenly passed away in a retirement

home and her father in eighties was left alone. She was in no frame of mind to take her father back

with her to US. She was begging her relatives in india to look after her father which they were not

ready to undertake. last heard off, the old man was struggling in the home with his problems.this

is what happens in a separated family. single senior ladies cope better

One of the residents of my community is 82 years old. He suffers from Diabetes and is not able to see properly. He moved to an old age home and then to this community when his wife passed away. He is otherwise stronger than myself. He has no children.

Depends on individuals and we can not generalize.

Very true, Sir.

Dear Naina Sir,

Old age home is usually referred to a place where members are given free boarding and lodging. They are run on charity.

'Retirement community' refers to a gated community in which members either buy an apartment / villa and have a common

kitchen, library etc. Some members take an apartment / villa on lease for 10 to 20 years. The money will be returned to them

when they vacate / after their time, to their legal heirs.

P.S: Since many seniors live happily in these communities, I wish to refer to them as 'Senior resorts'! :)

Dear Naina Sir,

Some people consider 'old age home' as the place where the inmates pay an advance amount (in lakhs) and reside in a rooms

- single / double. There is a common kitchen and a dining hall; unless sick, food is not served in the room. Prayer hall and library

will also be there. Routine medical check ups are done once in a week.

But I wish to call all these paid homes as resorts only! :)

P.S: My casino mAmA was amused to see a couple living in separate single rooms on different floors, in one such resort!
Probably, they wanted to be away from each other to have :peace:.

rajiramji

one sees many senior couples staying singly in separate rooms in their own homes.

only some seniors perhaps got carried away and did that in resort also.

many marriages have become dysfunctional and both carry on for want of better alternatives.

Today I got a circular which was talking about the celebration of Valentines day. We have singing by groups, skits, games etc. followed by a good dinner. we had three days celebration for Pongal which included people from nearby village. Bullock cart race, Tug of war, Uriyadyal.

We have one celebration every month on full moon day. We have our own singing group.

This is the kind of socializing which makes the Resident Communities popular.

People are waiting for an opportunity to have a get together.

hi

hi

may be some single man get VALENTINE in the community on valentines;s day....for VANAPRASTHAM LIFE...

In USA, single men are sought after.
There are more single women in retirement homes than single men.

I have a question about these retirement homes. In scanning the posts I did not readily find this information.

1. What is the age distribution of people choosing to live in retirement homes in India . My guess is that average is around 65 for males and 60 for females.

2. Do most people retire after 60 in India these days? Where I live there is no set age for retirement. When I choose to 'retire' I will be reducing my daily work load to less and spend more time on what I liked to learn. I have not seriously thought about retirement homes anywhere but this thread made me think about such items.

Thanks to Sri Nachi for sharing his experience

Dear Sir,

1. Most of the retirement communities have minimum age for entry as 55.

2. Govt. jobs have 60 as the retiring age but in private educational institutions there are professors in their 70s too. :)

But most of the female bank employees prefer voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) when they hit 55 and wish to move
to a nice retirement community, to escape from kitchen duties (hazards??)! :couch2:

Sir,

What is the arrangement for medical aid, I mean health? Since most of the inmates are aged, health is an important aspect to be taken care of. Hope there is a clinic/nursing home either inside or nearby with a Doctor round the clock.

The arrangement in my community is not good. They have an arrangement with a nearby hospital who will send an ambulance if needed. Doctors from the hospital visit the place once a month. There is a van attached to the community with a driver for taking the residents to the nearby hospital if and when necessary.

Some of the communities have resident doctors as well as a hospital. These are the facilities which are promised, but not fulfilled. These are to be checked at the time of the actual visit.

My community is not suitable for Assisted Living. The arrangements are not sufficient. They call it Active Retirement Community.

The age of entry is coming down. Many people prefer to book these places when they are young. My community has many owners in their 50s. They do not stay here. They rent out their accommodation till they come back.

The average age of the permanent residents is 60+. In India most people retire at the age of 60.

Dear Smt Raji

Thank you for readily sharing your knowledge in the forum.

Yes, escaping routine 'home work' can be a welcome change :-)

If someone at 55 still have mother in law/or and father in law (or mother and/or father) to attend to I guess they cannot escape those duties and go to a nice retirement community!

Sri Nacchi - It seems you have done your homework regarding these retirement communities and it also seems you are clear what you want. I wish you all the best. Thanks for readily sharing your experience.

Dear Sir,

Not always! One of our friends moved to 'Vanaprastha' in Coimbatore in his late sixties along with his wife and mother, buying one villa.

The mother had a comfortable life for many years till she passed away peacefully, after hitting 100! Now, that mAmA's daughter and

son in law have moved to the same retirement community, after their son got a job abroad!

I also know that one mAmA (widower) and his mother live in adjacent rooms in a senior resort in Sing. Chennai. :)
