My Experiences in a Retirement Community

Not open for further replies.
One of the Tamil Brahmins forums floated a Retirement Community. I was asked to join the community. But I found that the arrangements were not to my liking. They had only single room studio apartments. Then they were with a Swamiji in that venture.

In fact many of the Residential Communities in Coimbatore are aligned to Swami Dayananda Saraswathi. Though I have nothing against him, I would not like to be counted as one of his followers.

I do not like the communities which are overtly religious.

There are some strange happenings in these Retirement Communities. In our community a number of people suffer From Diabetes. Diabetes could be controlled by the intake of food.

Controlling your diet is the best way of treating diabetes. But in our Community, I am the only diabetic who controls his food intake. Special food can be arranged at the payment of a charge. But Except myself no one asks for special food.

This may seem strange. But the fact is that most of the people suffering from diabetes (especially in India) do not bother to control it till it is too late. Even when they have suffered from it. One of the residents has very poor eyesight because of Diabetes. But even he does not bother to control his diet.

Of course in Retirement communities people are obsessed with food.

Many diabetics have difficulty accepting that they have diabetes and they simply ignore it.

True! I find persons who take insulin are more careless when it comes to diet..They feel that in any case as they are taking insulin food intake need not be controlled...Otherwise they will end up with low sugar! Carelessness is the root cause

Dear Nachi Sir,

Your observation about diabetic patients is correct. Seldom these people take care of their 'in take'! :hungry:

Their philosophy: Enjoy utmost WHEN you LIVE!

I know one diabetic mAmA, who takes sweets everyday and asks his doctor to 'adjust' the dose of insulin accordingly!

dear nacchi,

we have lots of diabetic tambrams here in toronto. they talk. they talk of food intake. and the type of food. but no one talks of the volume of food. these people, some of them for one person, they eat equivalent to a saddhi.

mrs K cooked food for two couples, ourselves and another, one time. this couple, our guests, were on a 'diet'. whatever diet it was i dont know. one andaa of keerai molagoottal, puLi pacchadi, and 2 cups of rice was polished off in no time. the food that would have lasted us for 4 occassions or more.

go figure that out.

hi

especially tambhrams are obessed with foods....we the brahmins brought up like this.....from childhood...we prepare

variety of foods for different festivals/occasons....its hard give up in old ages.....some time we cant control on IN TAKEof

food in the old ages.....

Sometimes I feel that it is very true to say 'uNdu kettAn pA**An! :hungry:

Many oldies crave for special items and even with diabetics, they gobble up sweets like kids! :D

when there is nothing left for senior citizen in life, what should they be doing?

when people burn their last candles, they do it at both ends.

An octogenarian lady in my extended family was the sweetest lot among her siblings! Highest blood sugar!

Most of her children are settled in the U S of A. One daughter came to India, with a decision to give a neat send off to her mom!

She fed her with as many sweets as possible including variety of ice creams, which she was fond of. Within ten days, her sugar

shot up and landed her in coma. Luckily she did NOT live long; before the month long vacation ended, all :rip: rituals were over!

Went on a day long picnic. Visited a tourist resort nearby. These kind of happenings is what makes staying in a retirement community worthwhile. Social interaction with other people is what we missed when we were staying alone.

Really?

I was always under the impression that Brahmins practiced moderation in food and are not obsessed with food.

Frankly speaking I wonder what is there to be so obsessed with food?

One should eat to live and not live to eat.

It is premeditated murder punishable with death. LOL.

dear K,

Keerai molagootal and puli pachchadi are diabetic foods. The sugar content is minimum. You should have offered Olan and maambazha puliseri along with adaiprathaman and chakka prathaman. Then they would have been restrained. LOL.

May be labeled as 'Mercy killing'! Luckily she did not land into a coma. I don't know what would have been her

plight because hospitals never feed sugar stuffs to a diabetic and would try to keep her alive as long as possible!

i thought this was funny, though it may not be so viewed by the folks at larger here ;)

a close relative of mine, recently was shopping for a retirement community near kovai, luxury one mind you. the man lives abroad and is looking forward to retiring in the motherland.

he went to a few brahmin ones (he is a strong brahmin feeling one) and was rejected in every one of them.

reason? he smoked and drank, and doesn't like to attend bhajans and such, though his wife is ok with the latter. they left india disappointed :)

This does not surprise me. The Brahmins who run these communities believe that they have descended from Heaven and decide what is good and bad for the community. In fact I decided against most of the communities run by the Brahmins for this reason.

Dear Kunjuppu Sir,

'Brahmin feeling' is totally different from 'brahmin life', right!

That couple missed to visit a few resorts which have many 'pugai vaNdik kudi magans'! :)

dear raji, good lady :),

please free to PM me the names of such resorts. thank you.

There are all types - vaidic, practicing, name sake, evolved - only the distribution is skewed and not normal bell curve.

They will have inmates of all castes.

Hope that couple won't mind it. :)
they can have a separate resort for drinking ,smoking and non veg consuming brahmins where there are no inhouse bhajans

or temples

A kind of exclusive different brahmin community to meet the needs of modern living

they can also a have a golf course and a few outdoor and indoor games and a card room for bridge enthusiasts.

A bar in the club house would be an additional plus.

just because the needs are different ,it does not mean that they cannot be exclusuive for born brahmins
