There has been constant debate over white rice versus brown rice for decades. Although white rice seems to be a favourable choice for the majority of people for its appetising taste and appearance, brown rice wins hands-down when it comes to health benefits.

Says holistic health guru Mickey Mehta, "Brown rice is healthier since the refining process only removes the hull of the rice kernel, leaving its nutrition intact. On the other hand, the milling and polishing used to make rice white, strips off its essential nutrients and vitamins."

A cup of brown unpolished rice contains 88 per cent of manganese, 27.3 per cent of selenium, 20.9 per cent of magnesium, 18.7 per cent of tryptophan and only 12 per cent calories. The conversion of rice from brown to white destroys about 60 per cent of iron, 80 per cent of vitamin B1, 67 per cent of vitamin B3, 90 per cent of vitamin B6, 60 per cent of iron and almost half the phosphorous, manganese and dietary fibre naturally present in the rice.

Nutritious and wholesome
Packed with natural oils, brown rice is extremely heart-friendly. Due to its fibrous concentration, brown rice facilitates healthy bowel movement and promotes weight-loss.

A cup of brown rice fulfils about 80 per cent of the daily requirement of manganese in the body. Manganese helps in the formation of healthy cholesterol. Brown rice improves metabolism and keeps you feeling fuller for a long time.

So here are some popular and effective natural remedies to try at home:


Soak your feet in a bowl of warm water for 10 minutes. Dry thoroughly and then apply vegetable oil to the cracked areas of the feet. Wear a pair of thick socks – this treatment can be supercharged by leaving it on overnight. The socks will trap your body heat which will increase the effectiveness of the mixture as more of it will be absorbed by your skin. Within a few days your dry cracked areas will be nourished.

Apply the pulp of a ripe banana on the affected area of the heel. Leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse it clean. This is a simple dry cracked heels home remedy and it can be used on a daily basis to prevent and treat dry and cracked heels. Try mixing half an avocado or the flesh of half a coconut in a blender along with the banana to form a thick and creamy paste. Avocados and coconuts are rich in several essential oils and fat soluble vitamins. This nutrient rich paste will help to provide your skin with the vitamins and oils it requires to stay soft and well moisturized. This paste can be used as an effective treatment as well as a preventative measure.

Soak the feet in lemon juice for about 10minutes. Lemon juice is a mild natural acid and helps to dissolve dead and dry skin. It is best to soak your feet in a lemon juice solution and then lightly scrub it with a loofa or soft foot brush to gently exfoliate the top layers of dead skin that cause dry cracked heels.

Using a mixture of glycerin and rosewater will soothe and cure cracked heels.

In severe cases it has been found that if you melt paraffin wax and mix it well with little mustard oil it can be highly effective. Apply on the cracked patches and leave on over night, again using socks if you wish. Rinse it off well in the morning. If this is done every day for maybe ten days then even the most stubborn heels can be transformed.

Exfoliation is key in foot and heel maintenance. A homemade scrub can be made using honey, apple cider vinegar and ground rice flour. If cases where the cracks are very deep, it helps to add a spoon of olive oil or sweet almond oil to the paste. First soak your feet for 20 minutes in warm water and then gently massage them with this paste. The vinegar will help to dissolve the thickened layers of built up dead skin whilst the rice flour will gently exfoliate the top layer of dead skin. The honey and olive oil will act as natural moisturizers and will help to keep the skin on your feet soft and moisturized and this will prevent further cracking.

For future foot maintenance try making your own ultra-moisturizing heel cream to keep your feet stay smooth. Add a few drops of lavender oil or lemon oil to a spoon of olive oil in a small bottle. Add an equal amount of water and shake. The oil/water mix will form a milky solution. Apply regularly to your feet but always shake well before use.

Eating a diet which is rich in iron, zinc, calcium and omega 3 fats will help to maintain healthy skin renewal and avoid deficiencies which can aggravate such conditions as cracked heels.

Oatmeal – Fiber is high on the list of natural blood-glucose stabilizing substances, and whole oats pack 16 grams of fiber into a single cup. Oats are also high in magnesium. A dry quarter of a cup has over 17 percent of the DRI.


Peanuts – Peanuts and peanut butter have been proven to lower blood sugar levels. Stabilizing your blood sugar protects the pancreas from being overworked and also staves off hunger. [2] When treating cancer as a fungus, various methods can be used and some have found that lemon and bicarbonate can help fight the fungus causing various types of cancer.

Lemons are also effective in helping the body detoxify. They are rich in vitamin C and help your body neutralize cell-damaging free radicals. Limonene, a substance found in lemons also helps to stimulate lymph flow which is important in removing carcinogens from the body. A weak or under performing lymph system is a big part of disease promotion.

Lemon is also used to help balance Ph. They are taken together as it is believed that lemon is one of the safest ways to introduce high alkaline substances into the system. These methods of treatment are able to approach carcinogenic cells and destroy them without destroying healthy cells. This is another key factor as chemotherapy destroys all cells which includes the healthy ones.

Together lemon and baking soda help to fight cancerous cells or diseases in the body while helping to increase the body’s ability to clean itself up of what may be causing the diseases in the first place. Having lemon as a part of your diet is certainly healthy and taking this combination as a detox can also be helpful even if you don’t have an illness.

One method I have found for introducing this into your body as a drink is to mix 1/2 a teaspoon of baking soda into 250ml of water with about 1 half of a lemon. Please check into more recipes that might work for you. I have personally taken this mixture if I ever had stomach issues or was feeling like I might be getting sick. It has been very successful each time I’ve used it. Of course, always do your own research and check with a health professional if you wish.

The general term for these signs is 'pre-diabetes'. The blood sugar levels are not yet on a full blown diabetes level, and can still be reversed.


So first, know the symptoms:


* Feeling thirsty even after drinking a lot


* Feeling weak even after resting for a sufficient amount of hours.


* Urinating more frequently, especially at night.


* Gaining weight despite no change in diet and even with
exercising.


* Feeling hungry again minutes after eating.


* Skin infections take a very long time to heal.


* Blurred night vision.

Tests that help in early detection:


If you recognize in yourself two or more of these symptoms, then it is crucial that you have yourself tested to see if you are indeed on the path to diabetes. There are basically 2 tests you can take:

1. Fasting Plasma Glucose Test:


This test requires you to fast for about 8-10 hours. It would be best to give your blood sample in the early morning before breakfast. This test checks your how well your body maintains glucose levels and interacts with it. If your results show that your blood glucose levels are between 100-125 ml/dl, then you are either pre-diabetic or already suffering from early diabetes. If they blood sugar levels are less than 100 ml/dl, then you are safe from the disease.

2. Oral Glucose Test

Two hours after your breakfast or lunch, the lab technician will take a blood sample. If the test results show your blood sugar level between 140-199 ml/dl, then you are pre-diabetic. If it is less than 140 - you are free from it.

Don't panic if your test results reveal that you are a pre-diabetic, there are still ways to reverse the process.


How to Reverse the Symptoms of Diabetes:

Many will suggest you start taking medication to solve your pre-diabetes problem. While these medications will lower your blood-sugar levels, they are not a long term solution. A long term reversal of the symptoms requires:


1. Daily exercise:


If you have pre-diabetic symptoms, it's crucial that you start exercising every day. This will help your muscles to become less dependant on insulin, and will help maintain your blood sugar level. Put aside 30-45 minutes a day for exercise.


2. Watch you carb consumption.


To reverse the symptoms, cut down on your simple carbs, as the body will break them down to fats and energy that will be converted to fat. You need complex carbs like multi-grain bread, wheat bread, brown pasta, brown rice and boiled potatos. Exclude white bread, candy, chocolate, pasta, rice, cookies and cakes from your daily consumption.

3. Drink LOTS of water.


I can't stress this enough - stay hydrated. You need to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day to wash the toxins from your body through urination.


4. Change to a high fiber diet


Fiber doesn't only bring down your blood sugar levels but will also help you lose weight. A high fiber diet with plenty of water will make you feel full without raising your blood sugar levels. Legumes, raw fruit and vegetables have a high amount of fiber in them.


5. Don't Let Stress Get to You.


This may be the hardest one. You must avoid high stress levels if you wish to reverse your diabetes symptoms. Practice yoga, try meditating and get plenty of sleep.

Usually, this opening closes as soon as food passes through. But if it doesn't close all the way, acid from your stomach can get through the opening and into your esophagus. This is called reflux. Stomach acid can irritate the esophagus and cause heartburn.

Hiatal hernia can also cause heartburn. Hiatal hernia is a condition in which part of the stomach is pushed up through the diaphragm (the muscle wall between the stomach and chest) and into the chest. Sometimes this causes heartburn.



What factors add to heartburn?


Many things can make heartburn worse. Heartburn is most common after overeating, when bending over or when lying down. Pregnancy, stress and certain foods can also make heartburn worse. The box below lists other things that can aggravate heartburn symptoms.

Can heartburn be serious?


If you only have heartburn now and then, it's probably not serious. However, if you have heartburn frequently, it can lead to esophagitis (an inflamed lining of the esophagus). If esophagitis becomes severe, your esophagus might narrow and you might have bleeding or trouble swallowing.

If you get more than occasional heartburn, it may be a symptom of acid reflux disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), an inflamed stomach lining (gastritis), hiatal hernia or peptic ulcer.



What can I do to feel better?


You might be able to avoid heartburn by making some changes in your lifestyle. The box below lists some tips on how to prevent heartburn.

Tests might include X-rays to check for ulcers, a pH test to check for acid in the esophagus, or an endoscopy to check for other conditions. During an endoscopy, your doctor looks into your stomach through a long, thin tube which is inserted down your esophagus. Your doctor may also check for H. pylori, bacteria that can cause ulcers.



What about medicines for heartburn?


Several kinds of medicine can be used to treat heartburn. Antacids neutralize the acid that your stomach makes. For most people, antacids that you can get without a prescription (over-the-counter) give fast, short-term relief. However, if you use antacids too much, they can cause diarrhea or constipation. Look for antacids that contain both magnesium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide. (One causes constipation while the other causes diarrhea so they counteract each other.) Some brands of antacids include Maalox, Mylanta and Riopan. Follow the directions on the package.

H2 blockers (some brand names: Pepcid, Tagamet, Zantac) reduce the amount of acid your stomach makes. Several are available without a prescription.

Other medicines, such as omeprazole (brand name: Prilosec) and lansoprazole (brand name: Prevacid), also reduce how much acid the stomach makes. Metoclopramide (brand name: Reglan) reduces acid reflux. To find out what medicine is right for you, talk with your doctor.



Is heartburn associated with heart attacks?


No. But sometimes pain in the chest may be mistaken for heartburn when it's really a sign of heart disease. If you have any of the symptoms in the box below, call your doctor.

A new study conducted by Harvard University found that drinking just two cups of hot chocolate a day for 30 days brought about better blood circulation in the brain and higher scores at memory and cognitive test for mature people. Researchers found that memory and blood flow to the brain have a 'neurological and vascular connection".


"We are learning more and more about the blood flow to the brain and its influence on cognitive thinking skills," says Dr. Sorond Farzaneh, of the Medical faculty. "When different areas in the brain need more energy to complete tasks, they need more blood. This relationship plays a very important role in various diseases and symptoms like Alzheimer's.


The study was publish in the 'Neurology' journal and included about 60 people of ages 65 and up. Out of these, 18 had bad blood flow. Half of the participants drank hot cocoa rich with antioxidants, while the other half drank hot chocolate that is not particularly rich in antioxidants. However, after a month (in which the participants were not allowed to consume chocolate), those with bad blood flow experienced an 8.3% improvement in their blood flow (a big number when we're talking about health), with both types of coco having the same effect.




"From a medical standpoint," wrote the researchers, "the effect of hot chocolate on the blood vessels doesn't seem to be connected to antioxidants."


Now, of course hot chocolate is not the only food to give your brain a push, but it's always good to add something sweet to the menu that actually helps!

8. DISINFECTANT SURFACE CLEANER: Nearly fill a spray bottle up with white vinegar. Chop up 3 or 4 gloves of garlic and add to the bottle along with a few drops of lemon oil. You will have freshly smelling disinfected worktops.

9. REPAIR OF GLASS CRACKS: This is only for slightly cracked glass or hairline cracks, and is mainly useful in preventing propagation of any damage. Garlic is a natural adhesive. Crush a clove and use the sticky juice that comes out. Rub this juice onto the crack and wipe away any excess.

10. DE-ICER: Garlic salt is an effective de-icer for your driveway and paths. Sprinkle liberally to have ice-free zones.

CAUTION: Do NOT feed you pets garlic. நம் சுற்றுச்சூழலும், வாழ்க்கை முறையும் 50 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு இருந்ததைப் போல இப்போது இல்லை. நிறையவே மாறிவிட்டது. பெண்களில் நிறைய பேர் வேலைக்குச் செல்கின்றனர். இரவு ஷிப்ட் முதல் பல பணிகளைப் பார்க்க வேண்டிய சூழ்நிலை. சங்யான நேரத்திற்கு உணவு உண்ண முடியாமல் போகும் போது, உடல்நிலை பாதிக்கப் படுகிறது.

Sleeping on your back with your arms at your side is generally considered to be the best sleeping position for spine health and it’s good for your neck, too, as long as you don’t use too many pillows. This so-called “starfish” position is also good for the back. Generations of people have reported that cherries help keep painful osteoarthritis (OA) and gout flares in check. Now, scientists are putting this popular folk remedy to the test, with promising results.

Researchers have tested different amounts of several varieties of cherries in almost every form, from juice to pills. And though most studies are small and the findings preliminary, evidence of the benefits of cherries is growing.


Gout Management



In a study of 633 participants, Boston University Medical Center researchers found that eating at least 10 cherries a day protected people with existing gout from recurrent attacks. The findings were published in a supplement to the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism.



“Cherry intake was associated with a 50 percent lower risk of gout flares over a 48-hour period,” says study co-author Hyon K. Choi, MD. “We extrapolate that cherries will continue to work long-term.”


He attributes the positive results to anthocyanins – plant pigments that have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Anthocyanins are found in red and purple fruits, including raspberries and blueberries, but cherries, especially tart cherries, may contain higher levels.


Liquid cherry extract – found in health-food and specialty stores – appears to provide the same benefits. In a retrospective study of 24 patients presented at the 2010 annual meeting of the European League Against Rheumatism, researchers at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, N.J., saw a 50 percent reduction in flares when gout patients took one tablespoon of tart cherry extract – the equivalent of 45 to 60 cherries – twice a day for four months.


“This is definitely a topic worth further investigation,” Dr. Choi says. “If cherries prove effective in large trials, they could provide a safe, nonpharmacological option for preventing recurrent gout attacks.”


Osteoarthritis Relief



Other studies suggest that cherries may also help reduce symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA). Researchers at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center say 53 patients with knee OA who consumed two 8-ounce bottles of tart cherry juice daily reported a significant improvement in pain, stiffness, and physical function after six weeks. Each bottle of juice equaled about 45 cherries.


Patients lost these gains when they stopped drinking the cherry juice, “so it is alleviating symptoms, not curing disease,” says principal investigator H. Ralph Schumacher, MD. The findings were published in the same Arthritis & Rheumatism journal supplement.


Cherry pills may also improve OA pain and stiffness. In a pilot study at the Baylor Research Institute in Dallas, Texas, more than half of 20 enrolled patients reported improved pain and function after taking one cherry capsule a day for eight weeks. Each capsule contained 100 milligrams (mg) of anthocyanins. (Three ounces of pitted dark cherries are estimated to contain from 80 to 300 mg of anthocyanins). But in a follow-up study, when patients took two capsules daily, the cherry pills performed no better than placebo.


Until more is known, most researchers are reluctant to recommend a specific cherry regimen. But many agree that for overall health, and as a possible tool in managing gout and OA pain, a handful of cherries, especially a tart variety such as Montmorency, or a glass of cherry juice every day may be beneficial.
