Many Atheists including the like of Periyar EVR , Ambedkar etc accepted Buddhism as Buddhism does away with the concept of personal God , caste distinctions etc .
If you reread the quote of Einstein carefully he says " It transcends a personal God, avoids dogmas and theology"

Even recently Arun Shourie ,a hard core Hindutva Journalist has written a book "Does he know a mother's heart " and it has blasted almost all religions which has given reasons for why people suffer and he has spared only Buddhism which he felt has given tools how to cope with suffering when you encounter without giving excuses to avoid the same. No doubt many of Arun Shourie's observations can be debated and refuted but we have to accept the essence of what he is trying to convey and he wrote based on his own personal challenge in bringing up a differently enabled child and a wife who is now suffering from Parkinsons .

Note : The current Buddhism that is being practiced world over is very much different from what Buddha initially preached ( as they have made Buddha in to a God ) but the essence of what Buddha said is valid even now .

Man needs a God or an idol to worship.
He can't worship NOTHINGNESS or Soonyam.
Those who want to do away with the idol worship
are themelves made in Gods and have
their statues erected for the others to woship them.
Not just Buddha even E.V.R, Anna and M.G.R.
At least Buddha is considered as one of the avatars of Vishnu.
Even down to earth revolutionists are also promoted
