DMDK garners 2,285 votes from 11 Delhi constituencies

DMDK garners 2,285 votes from 11 Delhi constituencies - Times Of India

CHENNAI: The ambitious move of actor Vijayakanth to field DMDK candidates in the Delhi assembly elections failed miserably as party candidates secured just 2,285 votes if the figures from all the 11 constituencies, where the party contested, put together.

The party performed poorly despite the fact that Vijayakanth, his wife Premalatha and other senior DMDK leaders had campaigned in the national capital for five days, hoping to win over a sizable number of Tamils in Delhi.

Ishvari, who contested from the Wazirpur seat in North Delhi, got 362 votes, the highest among DMDK nominees, and K Swarna from Janakpuri received the lowest of 110 votes.

Vijayakanth fielded a candidate in the New Delhi constituency where Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal defeated Congress CM candidate Sheila Dikshit. DMDK's candidate G S Mani secured 205 votes in the constituency. "Getting a little over 200 votes in a constituency comprising a considerable number of intellectual people is a not bad," Mani, who is a practising Supreme Court lawyer, said.

Vijayakanth highlighted the pathetic living conditions of Tamils in jhuggis (slums) in the national capital. Eight of the 11 DMDK candidates hailed from slums, party's Delhi state secretary V N Dakshinamurthy said.

"We performed better than the NCP and the SP in a few constituencies. When nobody cared about the people in the slums, we fielded candidates and we believe our vote bank would increase in the coming local body elections," he added.

Senior leaders in the party are upset about the outcome and feel it will reduce the party's bargaining power in the Lok Sabha elections. They are now wondering if skipping the Yercaud bypoll, to contest in Delhi, was a wise decision.
DMDK can do something useful to improve the lot of tamils in jhuggis in delhi instead of contesting elections. They require support for education ,health care, better wages. for work, better living conditions. dravidian parties appeal may not cross tamil nadu borders.

AAP which won sizeable number of seats in Delhi is not willing to join hands with any other party to form a government and is insisting on fresh election with the hope of getting a clear majority. No one is concerned about the burden it will impose on public exchequr ,the only interest being selfishness.
I like the AAP stand on not joining hands with anyone . It is a moralistic stand and we should appreciate the same instead of accusing them of selfishness. other parties have to compulsorily change their ways as they will be compared with AAP. BJP has realised this and is reluctant to form a govt. BJP will definitely find a way out to form the govt with th help of others. this is not new for them

Shri krish44,

A 'moralistic stand' is good but anything in extreme produces opposite effect in this world. That is why elders emphasized practical wisdom instead of theoretically trying to experiment and find out whether the 'donnai' (தொன்னை) supported the oil contained in it or vice versa, the oil supported the தொன்னை!

Here if AAP continues to be an ஆப்பு, and re-elections are held, there may again be a hung assembly and the story will repeat. People have, I learn from some of my contacts in ND, already started rethinking on AAP; they want a clean and honest government - coalition or no coalition. Hence AAP is more likely to lose a few seats at least and BJP/Congress will be the gainers. This game will have to go on till one party gets absolute majority and that is most likely to be BJP rather than AAP.

All in all Kejriwal is digging his own political grave; Anna Hazare was wise - he probably knew Kejriwal better!

kejriwal's move to float a political outfit would not have been considered as practical a few months back and his party getting so many seats has proved he was right in following this course of action.kejriwal has not much to lose unlike the bjp . kejriwal will take the fight to lokasabha elections He may end up damaging established players like Modi or Rahul/sonia in their constituencies in gujerat and UP. it will be good for indians. A new order with a cleaner political system with value based politics will emerge.

And there was an open call to muslims to vote for aap. And hobnobbing with terror/riot accused.

In digital media there is a hushed talk about the source of funds of AAP and it being a naxal outfit..Not sure how much is it true..Take for example Prashant Bhushan, the legal face of AAP..He wants to handover Kashmir to Pakistan; Manish Sisodia another key leader has close contacts with Naxalites and Maoists...Not sure how their governance model is going to be

Why not aap accept congress offer of unconditional support and form a government.

BJP has been bitten twice by mayadevi and kumarasamy gowda. They must listen to modi and go for repolling if aap doesn't form the government.

BJP should not unless it gets an absolute majority.

Better for AAP to support BJP and see how it works and veto any policy that they feel is anti people / anti AAM Party and if BJP still goes ahead with its anti people's Policy they can then issue a no confidence motion and pull it down but right now best course for AAP is to extend outside support to AAM Party based on certain special issues and go step by step instead of adopting MY WAY OR HIGHWAY .

'Warned DMDK Leaders Against Targeting CM, Contesting in Delhi'

'Warned DMDK Leaders Against Targeting CM, Contesting in Delhi' - The New Indian Express

While the letter he addressed to DMDK president Vijayakant on Tuesday cited indifferent health as the reason for his retirement from active politics, veteran politician and the party’s presidium chairman, Panruti S Ramachandran, opened up to Express in an interview with Sruthisagar Yamunan on his perceptions about the party. Excerpts:

Did you inform about your decision to retire from active politics to your party president any time before Tuesday?

No. I felt he might not agree and would want me to continue. My doctors wanted me to take complete rest. So I resigned on health grounds.

You said your advice not to contest Delhi elections was not heeded to by the party. What about the 2011 TN Assembly elections? Were you happy with DMDK joining hands with AIADMK?

I was instrumental in the alliance taking shape. I took all the efforts for it. It benefited us and we became the main opposition.

The DMDK parted ways with the AIADMK after that. Were you okay with how the break happened?

The DMDK leadership thought that the party could grow only by criticising the CM. I could not go with that perception. I told the leadership that such a strategy will only help the DMK and will not benefit the DMDK.

Is not criticism the job of the opposition party?

You have to see the scenario in which the party became the opposition. We contested the election with the AIADMK as a partner. Constructive criticism is the job of the opposition. But I felt the strategy the party was actually following had more to do with corner the chief minister. This is something I did not agree to. The idea that you could capture power by always criticising the current government is wrong. This would have only benefited the DMK.

You have said in earlier interviews that the aim of the DMDK was to become an alternative to the AIADMK and the DMK. Why then did you help create an alliance with the AIADMK?

I was of the opinion that the DMDK had not grown strong enough to contest alone. Ideally, it could have been the right thing to do. But politically, I was of the opinion it was not viable. The pact helped the party.

Do you think the DMDK is moving towards the DMK?

It doesn’t seem so. But now it is for them to decide. I’ve retired and have nothing to say (laughs).

Do you feel the DMDK too has gone the DMK way with regard to domination of Vijayakant’s members in the party?

Which party has not? You can say the same thing about Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. This is the order of the day.

Is the presence of Vijayakant’s family a reason for your comment that the good perception of the people about the DMDK has dipped?

As long as MGR was alive, he did not bring Janaki Ramachandran into politics. It was only after his death that she made her entry.

Could you elaborate on your take on the DMDK contesting the Delhi Assembly elections?

I advised against contesting in Delhi and in Yercaud. They listened to me with regard to Yercaud but not Delhi. I said so as I believed we would not get votes.

The DMDK was started with the aim of becoming an alternative. Can it fulfill that role?

For that, the current style of leadership should change. The Lok Sabha elections would be an indicator. All I can say is that the good perception of the people about DMDK has gone down.

Seven MLAs have revolted against the leadership. How will your exit impact the party?

I cannot talk for them. But I think my exit will not affect the party much. I am retiring on health grounds and I feel when I can’t achieve what I want, there is no point in continuing.

You have invested eight years of your political life with the DMDK. Are you satisfied with the returns?

Politics is like agriculture. The harvest will be good one year and might not be so in the next. But farming has to go on!

Does that mean you will have another harvest?

(Laughs) I cannot say anything on that.

BJP under modi will not. Gadkari blurted out initially that the party will look into forming a government; when harshvardhan and other leaders firmly denied any thought of forming a government without absolute majority, he too retracted.

In the national election too bjp must work for absolute majority, 272+, and not take shortcuts.

BJP will definitely find a way out to form the govt with th help of others. this is not new for them

And there was an open call to muslims to vote for aap. And hobnobbing with terror/riot accused.
how many muslims did aap field in elections?. how many got elected?out of 8 winning congress candidates 4 are muslims. Accordingto AAP they do not believe in Identity politics.they gave tickets to common place candidates without caste, community, gender and religion considerations. they do not talk of reservations for BC ,obc .For all marginalised communities like tambrams they are a better bet as compared to bjp.aap has placed its hopes on youth, women and urban poor and talk of common mans issues of price rise, electricity charges water shortage. DMDK instead of genuinely helping tamils in jhuggies in delhi who are in dire need of help tried jumping into election fray with disastrous results collecting 200/300votes.I agree governance is a different ball game. let us see what they will do if they do form a govt.they being first timers may not do well. atleast they will not become corrupt very fast.

I know BJP better than you do. I have seen it grow from Jansangh days . how a service minded RSS cadre based party got corrupted in the shortest possible time in nineties and at the turn of the century is amazing. They cannot keep away from power. BJP will meet the fate of congress in delhi not crossing 150 seats in loksabha

The MSM was was more interested and wished bjp's and modi's defeat tehn in congress or aap victory. Some have tweeted that in ibn offices, many wore aap caps on the counting day. Even the body language of rajdeep sardesai and other anchors will display a pronounced dislike for bjp. Modi realised this and refused to entertain media interviews.

I hope bjp has more sense now and it will help modi in his march.

Quote from EC notice:

The pamphlet, whose objectionable parts EC has reproduced in its notice, purportedly has AAP saying that, "Delhi's Muslims should support AAP in the forthcoming polls. "We (AAP) are not seeking votes for power or money but for rooting out corruption from the system and building a corruption-free India where people belonging to all religions can live in peace," the pamphlet said. Kejriwal has appealed in the pamphlet that, "BJP is a communal party. Till now Muslims did not have any alternative, but now they have an honest alternative in the form of AAP. "We appeal to Muslim voters of Delhi to back our endeavours for clean politics and not fall into the trap in which they have been falling for the past 65 years."

And there was an open call to muslims to vote for aap. And hobnobbing with terror/riot accused.

i was surprised at that. kejri met some radical cleric. i think that and the pamphlet, are blemishes to his party and campaign.

a true sign of honesty is to appeal across board, based on his credentials. no need to go after bank votes. the minute you do that, you are no different from other parties. still i think the vast middle class that voted for him either ignored this or the papers did not give it the due publicity.

Look at this...2/3rd of Delhi will support AAP in case of reelection..No doubt, AAP is adamantine about not supporting any party, on account of this.

Delhi wants AAP ki sarkaar: Polls - The Times of India

Power lures. A JP will appear from no where and convince AAP to form government pointing out the enormous expenses the state will incur by re-election which this country cannot afford while prices are ruling over all parties. And the AAP may be convinced! It has intention to contest 2014 LS elections and the lever of power will help them. Power does not corrupt until you have it. Does Congress stand for corruption? No. Does BJP stand for corruption? No. Do any other ingredients of our democracy stand for corruption? No. Then? But everybody UNDERstand corruption. Even the expert swimmer is sucked in by the whirlpool! If there is no corruption what will happen to MODERN India which is based on corruption. Fool's paradise is a mirage!

I fully agree with you.AAP should not have tried for muslim votes meeting clerics and issuing pamphlets appealing to muslims.
Middle class had another choice NOTA which they did not exercise. NOTA voting was minimum in delhi elections as compared to other 3 states which went to polls.Media fully supported AAP ignoring the issue of appeal to muslims

Frankly I do not think BJP will let go of delhi inspite of posturing otherwise. They may form a minority govt daring others to bring them down for loksabha electoral dvantage. AAP will do the same if BJP does not do it/None of the political parties will wait for a JP type appeal. they are waiting to get into the power seat at the earliest. there needs to be no despondency regarding corruption.System will throw up an agency to cleanse the system . I have become optimistic after AAP rise. There is Loksatta in andhra. similar forums will come up

It is an interesting observation .In Delhi people had a choice of AAP instead of the usual Congress /BJP and hence gave the choice to AAP instead of NOTA while in other 3 states except for Congress/BJP there was no visible 3rd alternative except for NOTA and maximum people exercised that option .
One more thing in Delhi that can be noticed is that parties like DMDK ( Vijaykanth ) did very very poorly in spite of his serious campaigning there and the joke in Political Circles is that had Vijayganth fought under NOTA symbol he would have got more votes and in many places DMDK Candidates got less than the NOTA Votes .So the message is clear - we want a clear visible 3rd alternative and not fly by night operators . So I feel unless Parties put decent candidates and unless the 3rd alternative is visible , clear and serious then the votes will switch only between the main 2 serious contestants and the people disgusted of both will prefer NOTA and NOTA has made its presence felt in many places where many candidates lost close contest where NOTA was more than the difference of votes between the first 2 contestants .
I feel in coming elections NOTA will regain more prominence unless there is a clear visible serious 3rd alternative like AAP ( and parties like AAP ) in those elections .

The results of Elections to five States are in the expected lines only.

The results reflect the peoples' mood against Congress Party. Delhi results are the best example. AAP a fledgeling movement riding on Anna Hazare's popularity caught the people's fancy to punish the established Political outfits. AAP is led by a motley crowd of idealists. It is yet to mature as a political outfit. History has many instances of people aroused by anti-establishment sentiments vote for change. Some turn into revolution under a ruthless leader and others just a movement for change. But when they get into the business of Governance most of them falter. French Revolution is the best example. After the initial euphemism of the united people, of the middle and lower classes, overthrew their aristocratic oppressors and made for themselves a utopia of liberty, equality and fraternity turned into one of the most chaotic, terrifying periods of European history. In our own Country we saw the anger of common man after the emergency in the election held in February 1977 wiped out Congress(I) from north of Vindhyas, when Janata Party led by JP Narayan was voted to power. But soon it was found that they could not sustain their hold for long due to internal bickering and bad administration. Similar results were got by TDP in Andhra Pradesh and AGP in Assam.

In Rajastan people punished the ruling Congress severely. Whereas in MP the voters gave another term to BJP to rule because of good Governance. In Chattisgarh voters reposed their faith on an honest CM. Of course Congress retained its hold in tiny State of Mizoram.

AAP which won sizeable number of seats in Delhi is not willing to join hands with any other party to form a government and is insisting on fresh election with the hope of getting a clear majority. No one is concerned about the burden it will impose on public exchequr ,the only interest being selfishness.

Dear Sri Sadasivam Sridharan,

AAP should understand that they were voted to replace the corrupt and inefficient Congress Government in Delhi, so also the BJP. Now shying away from taking responsibility is not correct. Both these Parties should sit together and arrive at a common minimum program to give a corruption free Government to the people of Delhi. Otherwise they will be handing over the State to the Congress led Central Government to rule under Governor selected by them .
Elections are not a joke or cheap, they cost money. National Capital should not go for elections at the whims of Political Parties.

Regards,
Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.

Can you give some references or links to data on NOTA in the five states?

This is from DNA; nota wotes and %. Constituent wise analysis may show the reason for the - naxal, candidate selection plus other causes.

Delhi 49730
Chattisgarh 3,56,00
Madhya pradesh 5,90,000 / 1.9%
Rajasthan 5,67,000 / 1.92%
Total nota 15,00.000 / 1.31%

there was no visible 3rd alternative except for NOTA and maximum people exercised that option .

NOTA has made its presence felt in many places where many candidates lost close contest where NOTA was more than the difference of votes between the first 2 contestants .

I feel in coming elections NOTA will regain more prominence unless there is a clear visible serious 3rd alternative like AAP ( and parties like AAP ) in those elections .

An interesting article here that talks about that the verdict for AAP in Delhi was not for AAP/Kejriwal but an anger against established politcal structure . It is no longer an anti congress wave across India but an Anti establishment wave and AAP is cashing on it . NAMO and BJP have a lot to worry and change their startegy in the coming parliamentray elections from simply abusing the Congress,UPA,Rahul,Sonia ,MMS .

After victorious Sunday, BJP now wary of AAP's spread

After victorious Sunday, BJP now wary of AAP's spread - Rediff.com News

Sheela Bhatt in New Delhi

Says a senior BJP leader: “If the AAP had Congress or BJP-type polling agents they would have easily got three-fourth majority in Delhi, there is no question about it. It was not Kejriwal or the AAP that got the vote. People went all out with a resolve to defeat what we call ‘the system’.”

Sheela Bhatt reports on how the AAP’s cornering of the anti-establishment vote has forced the BJP to rethink its strategy for the Lok Sabha elections.

The Delhi assembly election results have brought multiple worries for the Bharatiya Janata Party and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

A senior BJP leader told Rediff.com, “Our understanding is that the vote for the Aam Aadmi Party is nothing short of a revolution. It was the people’s determination to vote against the political establishment, not merely an anti-Congress vote.”

The assessment of the BJP at the highest level is that Arvind Kejriwal and his team will affect some 300 seats all over the country in the Lok Sabha election when “the bug of anti-political establishment” will spread if they decide to contest the elections, he said.

A more serious implication is likely to be seen in Uttar Pradesh, where the complete rout of the Congress will create a stir among the Muslim voters. The BJP’s preliminary assessment is that UP’s Muslims may back Mulayam Singh Yadav once again. They will rethink their strategy, says the BJP leader.

This, in short, is the unintended fallout of the Delhi vote, he says. The BJP’s assessment before the day of counting of votes was that Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party was on the comeback trail and would be emerge as a major challenger to the BJP, but now it believes the Congress’s extraordinary drubbing may rally the Muslims en masse behind the Samajwadi Party.

The senior BJP leader, talking off the record, said that in New Delhi except senior leader Arun Jaitley no national leader had much of a clue about the AAP’s actual strength. The source said as voting day came closer the party found that its Delhi party infrastructure was “completely discredited”. From Vijay Goel, Aarti Mehra and Vijay Jolly to district chiefs down, they were all finding it difficult to stand strong against the popularity and "innocence" of the AAP candidates. Normally many of the BJP’s block-level office-bearers are builders, small-time operators or real estate agents, and not hardcore politicians.

Some 15 days before the voting Jaitley had informed his party’s senior leaders that the AAP will get more than 20 seats. He said the voter’s mood was as much against the BJP as it was against the Congress.

However, the party’s top leadership was divided on playing the Modi card when they got it right that the AAP was attracting both the anti-BJP and anti-Congress votes. After intense deliberations the top leadership decided to arrest the BJP’s slide by planning half a dozen last-minute rallies by Narendra Modi. It was a gamble, and Modi had to do it.

The senior leader, who was privy to the tension among the BJP leadership after realizing the real threat from the AAP, said, “We had to seriously study the AAP. We actually went and met some of their candidates to know what the AAP was and what it stands for! We saw that some of their candidates were staying in 10x10 square feet house. We also saw that Kejriwal was working without expecting the fruits of success. He was working solely for the cause, to bring about change in society. We take his intentions seriously.”

However, after praising Kejriwal thus, he said, "His mission is unlikely to succeed because Indian society has deteriorated beyond imagination."

A senior BJP leader, in a surprising admission, told Rediff.com, “If the AAP had Congress or BJP-type polling agents they would have easily got three-fourth majority in Delhi, there is no question about it. It was not Kejriwal or the AAP that got the vote. People went all out with a resolve to defeat what we call ‘the system’.”

He said the AAP did not have enough workers at the booth level to help the voters. People themselves found their way to the booth and voted, expressing anger against the political system.

The BJP insider says it was to the BJP’s credit that it could still emerge as the largest party when there was an unprecedented anti-political establishment vote rarely seen in Indian society.

Arvind Kejriwal, while talking to Rediff.com, agrees that they were very close to getting a majority of their own. He said, “Our voters were cheated in the last few days. There were eight constituencies where we lost because our adversaries helped independents to cut into our votes. Some independent candidates were propped up with the ‘torch’ symbol, which confused our votes about our symbol of ‘broom’. In Kalkaji our candidate lost by some 2000 votes while the independent candidate with the ‘torch’ symbol got around 3000 votes. In Janakpuri our candidate lost because an independent got around 4000 votes. We lost some eight seats due to such fake independent candidates."

Despite winning a historic verdict Kejriwal is still functioning out of his home. He is suffering from chronic cough and diabetes. His high blood sugar level is kept under control with the help of insulin, but the cough is an “annual event" for Kejriwal, and it does not respond to allopathy, homeopathy or ayurveda.

Kejriwal told Rediff.com that his party was planning to contest the Lok Sabha poll next yaer, and once again ruled out any truck with the BJP or Congress to form the government.

He also said, “On December 4 polling went on till late, till 9 pm. Some 170,000 votes were polled after the deadline of 5 pm. I am surprised that in spite of ongoing polling ABP TV channel and others came out with an exit poll giving a majority to the BJP. How is this possible? The India Today-ORG poll gave the BJP 41 seats and AAP only six seats. We feel in the last three days a lot of cheating took place, which cost us dearly."

Kejriwal reiterated, “I don’t see any way out of the current situation. We will not take any help from the Congress or the BJP. Let’s wait and see.”

The BJP’s hope of a division of Muslim votes among the Congress, SP and BSP may not happen as the Congress will be rudely rejected due to the ripple effect from the state polls in Delhi, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. In the Lok Sabha seats the battle now will be intense, particularly in eastern UP where the SP is directly pitted against the BJP.

AAP is viewed by the masses as a honest party...That is their USP..

It will be advantage AAP if reelections are held!

BJP has to cobble together a majority if they have to be in the reckoning!

hi
without single majority no party can continue for a long time..........coalition always head ache.......just example of dravidian

parties of tamil nadu...being single majority... they rule the state....without compulsion.....ONION was major issue for the

failure of bjp/congress in delhi.....it gave tears to both parties.....NOW A DAYS ...PPL HAVE MORE AWARENESS...wait

and watch for next year general election....

Will AAP take support of Congress and form the Government, this is the million dollar question today..In case it takes support, APP has to dance to the tunes of Congress which they had opposed tooth and nail...If they do not then it means that AAP is shirking from responsibility..A hobson's choice indeed..Take it or leave it!!

AAP seems to be a bunch of idealists without commitment. Any one can criticize the work of others, but when it come to taking responsibility, their true colour will get exposed. The over all anger against Congress got the votes for AAP. Now they do not know how to use it. Most unfortunate.
