Old age is costlier. With the number of old people growing year after year and their health problems compounding due to negligence, ignorance and lack of care at the family and social levels, the problems of the old are assuming alarming proportions. Old age homes are no solutions for them. The enormity of funds involved in protecting them from morbid diseases and age related disabilities are quite challenging. Provision needs to be made for the old aged to live a dignified life and death.

The high cost of ageing
Evidence shows that health systems must be recast to accommodate the needs of chronic disease prevention

he imprisonment of Justice C.S. Karnan, who recently retired as a judge of the Calcutta High Court, for contempt is the culmination of a series of unfortunate and unpleasant developments. It is indeed true that Justice Karnan’s offences in making wild and totally unsubstantiated allegations against a number of fellow judges, and his tactics of intimidation against Chief Justices who tried over the years to discipline him, were shocking and completely unacceptable. It is an extraordinarily low moment for the institution that a man who the Supreme Court felt needed his mental health evaluated should be sentenced for contempt of court, arrested and sent to jail. As for alternatives to imprisonment, recommending his impeachment to Parliament was a possibility for the Supreme Court. There is no defence of Justice Karnan’s disdainful refusal to answer the contempt charge or going into hiding to avoid arrest for nearly seven weeks — actions that only served to reinforce his waywardness and disregard for the law.
THIS SHOULD BE A LESSON FOR JUDICIARY AND THE COLLEGIUM TO SELECT JUDJES

Jailing a judge: On Justice Karnan arrest
Justice Karnan’s imprisonment should have been avoided to keep the judiciary’s dignity

UPPUMA AS AN INTERNATIONAL DISH
UpmasTimeToShine. After all, soft crumbly upma is the ultimate comfort food. Food that is ideal when you are ill. The one thing you can make in a rush. The first dish cooked in many bachelor kitchens. An easy way to remind yourself of home. Make it with rava, vermicilli or millets: The upma has always been open to interpretation, and there’s no reason why that should change.
A REAL FAST FOOD FOR ALL. ( NOT ONLY FOR THOSE WHO ARE ON FAST). IT CAN BE REINFORCED WITH NUTRIENTS TO MAKE IT HEALTHIER.
IT WAS OFFERED IN INTERNATIONAL AIR FLIGHT AND HIT THE HEADLINES.

Meet upma, the dish that caused a national outrage
Take one cup rava. Add chopped onions, mustard seeds and a generous helping of culinary chauvinism

Installing idols is one way of grabbing land and in the present case, it is the Forest land which is unauthorizedly taken over and it will be difficult to restore it to the forest Department on sentimental grounds. In some villages, this seems to have been practised to punish some unfriendly people by the local leader.

Telangana: Ministers use ‘idols’ to grab land
Political backing in idol installations has put forest officials in a spot.

ANOTHER BOREWELL TRAGEDY
Efforts on to rescue toddler from borewell in town near Hyderabad. News
This is the 'n th' time such a tragedy is recurring. Except in very few cases, the lives of children were lost and still no one seems to have learnt any lesson from the past. What prevents the drillers or the owners from covering the borewells by providing a proper cover, which after all is not a costly affair. It shows utter callousness and negligence on the part of those responsible. Severe action should be taken against all those responsible for the tragedy.

AADHAR BEWARE
Yesterday I got a message from Airtel asking me to link my Aadhar number with my cell phone number. On verification with my brother, i got confirmed that it was a fake message. Today it is confirmed by TOI news given below:
Airtel which is India's largest telecommunications services provider CONFIRMED that no such calls were ever made by the company asking for Aadhar number. Officials at other telecom companies confirmed the same
There is a public service voice message doing the rounds warning citizens about calls asking for Aadhar details
For a change, this a warning message that’s right on point as far as good practice is concerned, at least
Timesofindia.com spoke to all the concerned parties in the matter and this is what they had to say

Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater
Meaning: Don’t get rid of valuable things along with the unnecessary ones.
Origin: You won’t believe this one! In the early 1500s, people only bathed once a year. Not only that, but they also bathed in the same water without changing it! The adult males would bath first, then the females, leaving the children and babies to go last. By the time the babies got in, the water was clouded with filth. The poor mothers had to take extra care that their babies were not thrown out with the bathwater. Anais John

One of the prime problems metro commuters face is paid toilets at some stations. “Two rupees is charged for using the washroom if it is in the non-paid area. Why should we pay two rupees extra every time we use a restroom despite paying a minimum of `10 for the travel?” asks a commuter.
On the 10-kilometer stretch from Alandur to Koyambedu, three washrooms are in the non-paid area including Koyambedu, Ashok Nagar and Vadapalani. When CMRL officials introduced the concept of paid toilets, they cited the reason of misuse by non-users of elevated train stations that witness high footfall. Koyambedu washrooms reportedly had people around the station using it to take bath.
Another commuter says CMRL must either let ticket holders use washrooms in non-paid area for free or charge a fee in all metro stations. “Alandur witnesses highest patronage and they charge no fee for maintenance. Also, if a commuter checks out of the station unaware that the washroom is in paid area, the passenger has to pay Rs 9 to use the toilet despite having travelled in the metro. If the officials follow rigid rules in paid areas, they must provide an alternative for commuters from stations with washrooms in non-paid area,” he said. Though officials cite high patronage to be one of the reasons, Nanganallur metro station that hardly witnesses 50 passengers a day also charges Rs 2 for using the toilet
Why all this confusion? For ticket holders, use of toilets should be free or make it uniform in all stations at Rs two. Charging rupees nine for use of toilets is too much

The base (panchavargathara) of the new golden temple mast installed at Sabarimala Ayyappa temple on Sunday was found destroyed using mercury. The ceremonial installation of the new temple mast was to be held on Sunday.
Is it the act of hooligans against Hindus? of late such activities are on the increase in Kerala.

The inspection of CCTV footage on the premises showed 3 individuals pouring mercury on the base of the newly installed temple mast.

Banks have no liability for loss of valuables in lockers: RBI
Do not expect any compensation for theft or burglary of valuables in safe deposit boxes of public sector banks as the locker hiring agreement absolves them of all liability.
All public sector banks have washed away their hands of any responsibility.
Hirers are advised to insure any item of value deposited with the bank.
IN THAT CASE, AFTER INSURANCE, THE OWNERS CAN AS WELL KEEP THE VALUABLES AT HOME. WHY GO IN FOR A SAFE DEPOSIT WHEN THERE IS NO SAFETY GUARANTEED THERE? Why pay rent for the locker?

Loan waivers to farmers will be a perennial problem until all farmers irrespective of big or small are exempt from tax.
This is used more as a political tool than an ever lasting solution. Politicians irrespective of parties are not interested in solving the problems of the people. They are there to solve their own problems.

To give cold shoulder
Meaning: Being unwelcoming or antisocial toward someone

Delhi: Golf club incident example of 'racial discrimination', says Kiren Rijiju
It is a disgraceful and shameful act that the lady with an invitation should be prevented from participating in the dinner because of her traditional dress that she wore which according to the staffers there looked like a maid's uniform. Whether it is a matter of dress code or racial discrimination, it deserves condemnation.
Some time back, in one of the Chennai clubs, a magistrate was not allowed to enter because he was wearing dhothi.

Cong govt feels reservation for Brahmins and Vaishyas will help wean them away from BJP and add to their vote base in the 2018 polls.
In Tamil Nadu, it won't happen, because all Tamil Brahmins here are not Tamilians according to some chameleons.
One thing that is obvious is quota reservation is another vote bank device, a so far hidden fact, openly acknowledged by Congress. Reservation is not done to secure social justice.

Karnataka: Quotas for Brahmins, Vaishyas too?
