Karma, in other words, is nothing but action. Fate of destiny of a person
is based on the past karma. As a result of Karma, action and reaction,
or cause and effect are intertwined. Whenever an Offspring comes into this
Universe, it has the biological heredity as well as physical environment
required to learn karmic duties. Normally, we notice that if a person is
unhappy in life owing to financial condition, sickness, unhealthy relationship,
etc. soon, he/she starts searching for the reason and slowly realizes
the cause for it. In some cases, the cause is traced back to the past lives.
Sometimes, the karmic lapses becomes a chain of bad effects and
and results in negative factors. In order to overcome, one has to fulfill
the karmic or dharmic duties during one's span without fail based on the
instructions or guidelines that come from time to time from the ancestors
or elders of the family.

A devotee of Hanuman was once driving a cartload of grain to the market. On the way, one wheel got stuck and the cart could not be drawn forward. The cart slanted too, and a few bags fell on the ground. The devotee sat on the cart and started praying to Hanuman. He completed chanting the 108 names and even the 1008 names. When nothing happened, he started blaming the Lord and reviling Him for not rescuing him. Hanuman then appeared and took him to task! “Young man, instead of doing your duty by applying your strength on the job, you sat there, prayed and started reviling Me!” Come on, put your shoulder to the wheel and lift it up chanting My name! First contribute self-effort,” said the Lord. You must use all the talents awarded to you in a prayerful and humble mood. Until then, you have no right to seek the help and intervention of the Lord.

Namasmaranam is one of the best methods of Sadhana.
Japam and Dhyanam, through which one can achieve wonders.
The goal of man's life has to be self-realization.
A person may have inherent weaknesses yet by repetition of
Namasmaranam, his immense strength and potential will come
to his rescue when really required.

That evening Baba presented Himself much earlier than usual, at a quarter to four. No sooner had He finished His stroll among the two or three thousand people gathered and started back toward the temple than a heavy rain began to fall. People began scurrying for cover, and Elsie Cowan was knocked to the ground. "I feared being trampled," she said later. "Then in the blurred confusion of that moment I looked up and saw a flash of orange and there was Baba smiling peacefully and being all protective. He helped me up and brought me to shelter and I was thrilled with this sense of protection.”

Baba invited Helen Vreeland—a devotee from Santa Barbara, California—along with Elsie and I in for an interview. There was one other person present, an English speaking woman in her late forties who appeared to be from the Middle East. Obviously in quite a bit of distress, she told Baba that she had two children and pleaded with Him for help. She felt unloved and unhappy and worried about the care of the children because of a serious physical illness she had. "I know, I know," Baba said sympathetically. "Feeling unloved is not unusual, it's general now in this world—one must be strong.”

He spoke about the importance of character, perseverance and faith. "Emotions come and go: pain is the place between two pleasures, pleasure is the place between two pains—transient, always changing. These come and go like waves in the ocean, like a breeze, and one shouldn't pay much attention to them. Remember, you are the Unchanging, Infinite, Immortal." Everybody is saying, "I want peace"; He continued… Peace is like a letter in an envelope. The 'I' of 'I want peace' is the front part of the envelope and the `want' is the back. The `peace' itself is the letter inside. Throw away the envelope of 'I' and `want' and keep the precious letter of Peace.” He mentioned a number of familiar saying which took on new and deeper meaning. Gesturing expansively from His heart He seemed too full of the bliss He naturally and spontaneously radiated to us. "Most routes to God are circuitous," He sai d; "like Japa (recitation of the name of God with the aid of a Japamala, similar to use of the rosary) meditation and bhajans. But the direct path is Love. "Start the day With Love, spend the day With Love, end the day With Love: That's the way to God, that is the quickest path.” As He said this, He gestured to the suffering woman and to all of us as if He were in the heavens soaring in space.

"But, Baba, I am ill. I hurt." was her response.
He nodded softly and gently. "I know: your left side, it cramps; there are glands there."
She was surprised. "Yes, Baba, glands. Yes, it is cramping hard.”
"I know, I know,” He repeated in His soothing voice. "You don't sleep well at night, worrying this way and that. Your insides are in turmoil; sometimes you pass blood."

"That is right. Baba, that is right.” She began to calm and soften with this experience of Baba's omnipresence and omniscience.
"Yes, these eyes are x rays," He said, smiling. He continued to describe her condition, mentioning specific symptoms which she acknowledged. She kept pleading asking anxiously whether she would recover. "Surely, you will be all right." He answered emphatically. "Don't worry about the body. You are the I that is behind the body, you are Eternal."
"But my children, Baba, my health," she persisted. He produced the curative Vibhuti for her and told her to take a little in water at bedtime for three or four nights and she would sleep soundly; her side would start getting better and she would be well again.

It was during this interview that I began to see Baba less in the role of controlling great forces and being able to change history from afar, but more simply, as a manifestation of Pure Love. One might speculate that Baba's purpose in America is to usher in a spiritual awakening in the West, or to help the chaotic political, social, or economic conditions, or perhaps to do something about the tinder box in the Middle East, or as part of some great design; but when we ask Baba, He smiles sweetly and says, "I am only proposing to do this for Elsie and Walter and to bring happiness."
Baba produced some more Vibhuti for us, and Helen looked filled to the brim with love for Him. "You have given me everything, Baba," She said. Hesitantly she asked Baba if she could lay her head on His Feet. He consented and stood up. Helen knelt, her face filled with a soft radiant glow, a mist of loving tears in her eyes and slowly and gently pressed her cheek to Baba's Feet. She rested there a moment… her eyes closed, floating in a state of peace from this contact with the Divine. Baba stood quietly, smiling, recognizing the genuineness of Helen's feeling and pleased to grant this heart felt request. The moment was touching, full of devotion and love.

Elsie gave Baba letters from American devotees and showed Him enlarged photographs of the Christ on the cross which He had manifested for Jack Hislop. Talking business, she asked Baba if she could sell the picture and how much she should charge. He smiled. "No, no, I Am not interested in the money; don't talk about money with Me. Do your duty—it is your business...money comes and goes, morality comes and grows." Again, such sayings take on a deeper meaning in Baba's presence. It is apparent that He really means it when He says that He is not interested in money and does not want to talk about it, that it is a source of a great deal of conflict from which He intends to stay entirely free. At the same time, He understands and accepts its significance in the lives of His devotees. Suddenly He referred to the late Walter Cowan, who is ever with Him, as He has declared.

"Walter and I paid you a visit this morning," he said to Elsie.
"Yes, yes, at six o'clock. I felt so filled."
"No...five minutes to six," He corrected her, smiling lovingly, looking again as if He were floating in heaven. Here is an older woman weakened physically, having difficulty seeing and moving about, yet driven with devotion and love—always moving towards Baba. And, she had a vision of Walter and Baba at 6 in the morning. No wonder. She also urged us on, further and faster towards God come as Sai Baba.

Baba helped her up. I recalled a friend telling me before I had met Baba: "He is capable of filling your cup until you simply cannot hold more, and He still continues to give.”
The woman with the illness rose to thank Baba. He smiled lovingly at her and began to stir the air with that marvellously acquisitive hand of His. Soon, there it was: a magnificent ring. This was the final touch. She fell into a swoon at Baba's feet, crying "Thank You, thank You." Her change from the agonizing fear at the beginning of the interview to this intense radiance of devotion and love was so overwhelming that my own heart seemed a reservoir of vicarious and personal joy, and I struggled to keep its gates from bursting. Never had I felt this exquisite experience so deeply. Baba showed me in an instant what years of psychiatry could not: the means for igniting this love. Such deep love is born out of the devotional yearning for the journey to The Divine.

Divine virtues only make a person to lead a prosperous life and to become
a great person in the society. When we visit a garden, we find the fragrance
of the flowers and identify them from among many. Like that, we can find
a divine virtues person in the Society easily. Once if a person adopts and
strictly follows divine virtues, it is easy to adopt patience and perseverance
besides possession of good temperance to accept any thing in life without
analyzing the results of it. Such people do not worry about the hardships
in life and they take it very easy because faith in the Supreme Power relieves them
from mental agony and leaves it to HIM. Above all, Divine virtues create
in a person a good quality of behaving with others in an adaptable manner.
Divine virtues cultivate in a person humility. They can lead a carefree life
and is not to worry about the death even if it knocks his/her door. Contentment
and self confidence enables them to consider even an uphill task to be very easy to accomplish it.

Repentance saves even sinners from perdition. No ceremony of expiation is as effective as sincere repentance. The shopkeeper may give short measure at times, but he will never accept less money; the bill always has to be settled in full. Pay it through repentance. You cannot deceive the Lord with insincerity. Unless you correct yourself through detachment and sacrifice, you cannot reach God. The Lord can be understood, only if you approach Him, develop attachment to Him, have unswerving loyalty to Him and have full faith in Him. You will easily understand Him when you feel that you are but the instrument and He wills every little movement, everywhere. Give up egoism in full, and develop faith. Then you can most certainly see Him.

Some have the psychological egoism looking after their own interest,
welfare, happiness, etc. whereas the
ethical systems of traditional one
needs non-self interested behaviour; that does not mean one should
have self-hatred or lack of self confidence. One may not be able to analyse
the individual ethical egoism which is not generally consistent, because
some have immediate self interest, while some have longer term self interest
as it is a psychological nature and human theory too. Human behaviour has
to be consistent. One has to be more thoughtful and reasonable in actions
and deeds. Because of egoism, talent and efficiency get affected and in
some cases, listening skill too diminishes. Egoism appears in a person's mind
when he/she tends to think about the status, money, etc. Egosim may result
in negative results sometimes if he/she does not change their attitude. One
may have many misconceptions about the spiritual activities, deeds, etc.
Prerequisites for life is complete faith in Supreme Power. We have many
Scriptures, which dictate us positive instructions as to how to lead a life.
Hence one has to develop faith and trust in the Supreme Power and listen
to Pravachanams, etc besides reading Scriptures for directing one's mind towards
spiritual activities.

The jeevi (individual soul) has come to this birth in order to reveal the splendour of the spark of Godhead which It is. A rat is attracted by strong smelling cheap little stuff inside the trap; it neglects all other articles of food in the granary, and thus falls a prey to its own foolishness. Similarly people disregard and waste their life in the pursuit of mortal riches. Be aware and alert. Live in the world but develop the skills to wonder and discriminate between the eternal and temporary. Learn to see through this drama and discover the Director behind the scenes, who is none else than God. You can easily develop these skills through devotion (Bhakthi), based on performing duty without any expectation of results (Nishkama Karma).

One has to have both physical and spiritual discipline. A person
if does both physical and spiritual exercises, the life will be quite
enjoyable. One has to primarily understand his/her strength,
weakness so as to enhance the self-confidence in spiritual activities.
One has to undergo many difficult days to experience the divinity
and in the process one should not lose interest and should not
allow the mind or interest to diminish towards spiritual activities.
If we go by the history, one can notice that only devotion
protects a person from problems whatsoever. We generally notice
people having all comforts and conveniences do not worry of the
spiritual activities unless one faces problems in life. Despite the
fact that one has interest in such activities, sometimes he/she
keeps away from spiritual activities owing to environmental conditions.
Therefore one has to have sustained devotion with discipline so as to
attain the bliss of the Supreme Power with a strong will power.

CHAPTER 80

"Anger" - the poisonous venom that spreads its death from the mind to the senses and from the senses to your actions. Know that the seed of anger can be curbed from its growth, right at the beginning stages, by recognizing its evil, rejecting it, and draining its flow in the gutters that will flow away from the pure nectar of stability and patience. Behind each act of anger, lies the secret of desire that cries in its fears of remaining unfulfilled.

Rage, My dears, will bring only chaos in the mind, fire to the senses, harshness in your speech and uncontrolled violence in your acts. Remember, I will never allow you to justify to Me any acts of anger, for under no circumstance, do I allow you to behave in this nonhuman, animal-like and passionate manner. Each act of anger will bring with it several moments of repentance - the stream of bad memories that become difficult to erase. The victim that suffers from these painful outbursts may, eventually, learn to forgive and forget, but you, My dears will be hounded and haunted by the scenes of terror that will make you shudder from your own acts of brutality.

The moment anger strikes, think, O child, what fear lies behind this temporary intoxication. Anger will never attain peace and will never end in the arms of joy! Then why must you fight with anger, My sweet, when it will bring with it nothing but the misery of a troubled mind and a painful heart. The one that is already intoxicated, needs the help of the one that is in control of his senses. So do not let the attack of the one that is already drunk with the toxins of anger, instigate you to get drunk too! Age does not necessarily bring wisdom with it, so do not be aggravated when one witnesses the adult behaving like a child who has lost or broken his favorite toy. Live with the virtue of tolerance and patience that lies as the gift of life with only a few.

No! Anger is not the scream of joyful victory, for its attack will always be responded to with a counter attack. Anger will never settle an issue, it will only prolong the pain to become arguments that will remain indecisive and unfruitful in solving any problem. You have burnt in this fire for several births, and it has brought you nothing but several deaths of the body, mental and physical ailments, sleepless nights and restless days, and yet, like a child that cries when it is forbidden to play with fire, you, too, have burnt yourselves in this flame of anger, several times, and cry with immature rebellion, when I forbid you to touch its flame, once again. Nothing can or nothing will destroy you more than this heat of rage, for once it is ignited, it consumes life, itself, for that moment, leaves you to stand staring at the face of the corpse - your very own reflection that depicts the death of divinity.

Walk away, My dears, from the room where the heat waves of anger blow, and enter the room where the cool breeze of peace prevails. Anger must not be confronted with anger, but must be embraced with the strength to accept it and transform it to love. Know that anger, at first, may fight to live, but it will lose to the charm that love carries. The smile of peace will not come until the forehead is creased with frowns. Relax, and relieve yourselves from the stresses of fighting - the only fight that remains to be fought is yours with anger!

Every one of you has in possession a ticket for liberation from the cycle of birth and death. But most do not know the train that has to be boarded; many get down at intermediate stations, imagining them to be the terminus and wander helplessly in the wilderness, or are carried away by sights and scenes. Until the wound heals, and the new skin is formed and hardens, the bandage is essential. So too, until Reality is realized, the balm of faith, holy company and holy thoughts must be applied to the ego-affected mind. It is dedication to the Lord that sanctifies all activities. He is the Prompter, the Executor, the Giver of the required strength and skill, and the Enjoyer of the fruit thereof. So dedication must come naturally to you, for all is His, and nothing is yours. Your duty is to believe that He is the impeller of your activities and draw strength from that belief.

In life we always notice ups and downs. For example, Goddess Lakshmi.
One can notice that Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped everywhere around the world
to seek relief from poverty. Particularly in times of challenges, some do
regular pujas, worship, prayer, etc., and such people get a positive result
and She becomes a healer and brings fortune even in the darkest moments.
She offers a sense of courage, of hope, of power. In North India, while
starting a business, businessmen do Lakshmi Puja having faith in her as a
Savior. At times, people do collective pujas, with obedience and do services
in Satsang activities. Besides, collective bhajans, songs, etc. together. Worship
is not an emotional state, though it generally involves emotions. In fact, it is an
act and gesture of a person to act according to his/her own will with complete
faith and belief surrendering fully to the Supreme Power.

People seek frantically for peace and happiness in a thousand ways along a thousand roads. Real peace is to be got only in the depths of the spirit, in the discipline of the mind, in faith in the One base of all this seeming multiplicity. And the joy of that experience, the profound exhilaration which accompanies it cannot be communicated in words. All shravanam and kirthanam (hearing and singing God's names) is to take you nearer that experience. Shravanam is the medicine that you take internally and kirthanam is the balm you apply externally. Both are needed. Develop devotion to the Lord using as many means as possible. Your mind and the intellect must be trained and controlled, that is the sole aim.
