True devotion is inescapable in our spiritual development. In fact
devotion is a word, which plays a major role in all fields focusing one's effort;
then again it varies based on our consciousness. One should live
with a purpose. As it has a high value, it has to be on the right path.
We need to put our priorities and select our priorities to achieve
spiritual goal silently expressing our devotion towards the Supreme Power.
By our concentrated devotion, we can overcome the shortfalls, if any.
There may be some obstacles in life, viz. sorrows and troubles, etc
which are quite natural. As we climb in the ladder of devotion, gradually
our consciousness becomes healthy and all our ill-thinking or in the
non-spiritual activities get vanished. Some may think by frequent
trips to some temples, worshiping the Supreme Power will inculcate
the habit of devotion. No doubt, it is one such method. One can
visit sacred places, participate in religious gatherings and devotional
singing activities such as Namasmaran, etc and participate in any other
devotional practices which are organized. One has to get a devotional
longing in life to achieve the divine power, simultaneously changing
the mind and heart towards the Supreme Power by practicing of good
virtues of divine acts. In the mind of a true devotee, one can notice
a change and they give no importance to other activities other than
divine acts. It is because he/she is devoted to Supreme Power absolutely
and make use of the life only for HIM without allowing any time for
for his/her personal or selfish deeds.

People seek frantically for peace and happiness in a thousand ways along a thousand roads. Real peace is to be got only in the depths of the spirit, in the discipline of the mind, in faith in the One base of all this seeming multiplicity. And the joy of that experience, the profound exhilaration which accompanies it cannot be communicated in words. All shravanam and kirthanam(hearing and singing God's names) is to take you nearer that experience. Shravanam is the medicine that you take internally and kirthanam is the balm you apply externally. Both are needed. Develop devotion to the Lord using as many means as possible. Your mind and the intellect must be trained and controlled, that is the sole aim.

We must have the awareness of the relative value of things; the discrimination between the real and relatively real. The gifts of reason and conscience must not be wasted through neglect. Your story should not be a repetition of that of the woodcutter, who was given a huge sandalwood forest as a reward, but, who out of sheer ignorance of the value of the trees, burnt the trees and sold them as charcoal at so much per bag! You ignore the Divinity that you really are and waste the opportunity to unfold it. Ignorance (ajnana) is imported from outside; what is native to you, what is within is wisdom (Jnana).

It is quite often said by stalwarts that unless the sensory organs
are controlled and streamlined, meditation would not be quite useful
in achieving harmony. In fact, in yoga and meditation classes,
firstly it is mentioned that breath and eye movement have to be
closely watched. Suppose if the eyes start wandering and the mind
wavers, then the status or the position of the meditation becomes
ineffective. Truly speaking, objects and the self are interlinked by
the senses. One has to concentrate the entire shakthi of the mind
on the one sole factor of Supreme Power without any diversion
on other aspects or objects. To have successful meditation practice basic
ethical concepts with purity of mind together with righteousness has to be
strictly observed. No doubt, initially, preparation of the mind for
meditation takes quite sometime and the actual practice takes place in stages.
Hence, one has to have a clear thinking about the Supreme Power
before proceeding into the meditation practices with unblemished mind leading
to control of the senses.

It is to clear the path of spiritual progress of mankind that the Lord incarnates from time to time. The restlessness (ashanthi) in which man is immersed has to be curbed. That is what is meant by, the declaration parithraanaaya saadhoonam - ‘the saving of the good’; the saving of individual beings from the tentacles of restlessness caused by want of knowledge, of the relative unimportance of worldly things. All beings must get peace and true happiness; that is the mission on which the Lord comes again and again on this earth. He selects a place full of holiness and takes on the human form, so that you may meet and talk to Him, understand and appreciate, listen and follow, experience and benefit.

Faith is nothing but complete and absolute confidence and belief in
the Supreme Power regardless of the situation or influences made
by others who are with us. Initially one has to develop faith by
frequent study of scriptures and visit to the temples, satsang,
namasmaran, etc. and automatically faith will increase as you attend
such activities. Sometimes, owing to selfishness, one may inadvertently
not knowing the value of Supreme Power may move in a different
or not in a correct direction in the absence of proper Guru. Surrendering
to the Supreme Power may take sometime as one has to understand
the power of Almighty. If one is active in serving disciples of the Superme
Power, slowly and slowly one will be able to proceed in the right direction.
If one has determination and involvement of Godly acts, faith gets
penetrated into the person's mind and heart. Regular and repeated
studying scriptures carefully under the guidance i.e. under the aegis of
a proper Guru, and start praying or worshiping with full concentration,
the Supreme Power will certainly bless a person and he/she will be able to
notice the Supreme Power sooner or later.

Once it happened that Krishna, Balarama and Satyaki who were quite little boys at that time, scarce four or five years old, strayed into a thick jungle, all alone. Darkness fell, and there was no way of reaching Gokulam! Of course, as you must have guessed already, it was a stratagem of Krishna. Even at that age, He would do nothing without a deep purpose behind it and the purpose would invariably be teaching someone some good lesson.
They decided to spend the night, just where they were. Krishna put fright into them with His descriptions of ghosts, ghouls, and demons roaming in search of human prey. He proposed that two of them sleep for three hours at a stretch while the other one keeps watch.
It was Krishna’s duty to keep awake and be on the look out from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. Satyaki was to be vigilant from 10:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Balarama was to start his part of the duty at 1:00 a.m. and keep on till 4:00 a.m. Satyaki sat up at ten and Balarama and Krishna laid themselves on beds of dried leaves and slept soundly. Meanwhile a demon did actually present himself before the little Satyaki.
He fell upon the boy, who resisted heroically, dealing and receiving hammer strokes with fists with a good deal of clawing and biting in between. The demon had to retreat at last, leaving Satyaki badly mauled, but happy. The two brothers were sound asleep. They had not been disturbed in the least by noise of the encounter. Satyaki had met blow with blow, and dealt injury for injury. At 1:00, he awakened Balarama and stretched his body on the heap of leaves, as if nothing had happened.
The demon invited Balarama, too, for combat and had to retreat humiliated, because Balarama too was as fierce as he, and his blows were even more terrible than Satyaki’s. Balarama too curled himself into the bed at 4:00 a.m. after awakening Krishna Who was to keep watch in Brahmamuhurta, the auspicious hour when Gods are to be propitiated, that is, until dawn.
The demon came roaring like a wounded tiger, and advanced furiously at the little Divine Boy. Krishna turned His sweet charming face at him, and rewarded him with a lovely smile. That smile disarmed the demon. The longer he came under its influence, the weaker became his vengeance and venom. At last, the demon became as docile as a lamb. When the other two awoke, they were surprised at the victory that Krishna had won by the weapon of Love. You cannot destroy anger by anger, cruelty by cruelty, hatred by hatred. Anger can be subdued only by forbearance. Cruelty can be overcome only by non-violence. Hatred yields only to charity and compassion.

You take drugs in a vain attempt to escape from the grip of diseases. But you are unaware of the diseases that eat into the very vitals of your happiness and make you a social danger – the maladies of envy, malice, hatred and greed. Take this best medicine to rid yourself of these diseases! Believe that the Lord is living in every heart and so when you inflict pain, physical or mental, on anyone, you are slighting the Lord Himself. Never entertain hatred or contempt in your heart. Show your resentment, if you must, through carefully selected words but never through action. Introspect and repent for your own errors and pray for strength to refrain from your shortcomings.

Some argue that where there is affection, there is hatred too in the hearts
of a person. One should not inflict pain of mental or physical to anyone
leading to aggressive behavior or aggressive feelings to evaluate another
person during personal interaction owing to one's own emotions, viz.
happiness and sadness. One has to face different situations in life.
Sometimes we get stuck because of one's behavior. Religious duty
and obligations would certainly bring love towards everyone including
the Supreme Power. One has to be patient in life to attain certain
things. One's perseverance efforts, brings the desired results.

You must dive deep into the sea to get the pearls. What good is it to dabble among the waves near the shore and swear that the sea has no pearls in it and all tales of its existence are false? So too, if you are determined to get the full benefit from the Sathya Sai Avatar (or any form of the Divine), dive deep and get immersed in full. Half-heartedness, hesitation, doubt, cynicism, listening to tales, etc. is of no avail. Concentrated complete faith alone can bring victory. This is true of any worldly activity, is it not? How much more true must it be in the spiritual field? A hundred people might come to your house and even treat you with affection, but you do not address them as, “Papa or Daddy!” So too, remain attached to the one Name and Form that is dear to you. Have your mind fixed on that form at all times.

If a person has a concentration with devotion, he/she gets the answer early.
One has to catch HIM by unconditional love and affection, as we have with our
Daddy or Mother, as Baba says. In fact, if one has love towards HIM with
dedicated devotion, one attains the bliss early. One has to purify oneself by
good actions, as we please our Daddy or Mother by obeying their words.
If one continuously, repeatedly calls HIS Nama with pleasing words, HE is
bound to respond because of affectionate expression. In fact he loves everyone,
HE wants us to be near HIM. That is why HE sends messages to everyone
through Sadhus, Gurus, etc to show us the path to reach HIM. One has
to have the perception of Supreme Power in him/her and that is what is
necessary. Even if one does not know the language in which one has
to invite HIM or call HIM, if the devotee's heart is filled with HIM and
his/her mind is attached towards HIM, the purpose and object of prayer is
easily achieved.

No manifestation of the Lord needs any publicity. What do you know about God? Is your faith unshakable? You praise Him when things go well, and blame when things go wrong. Even before your devotion ripens, you strive to lead others, and plan for subscriptions and associations; all this is mere show which brings more spiritual loss than gain. When you start publicity you descend to the level of those who compete in collecting clientele, decrying others and extolling themselves. Remember, where money is calculated, garnered and exhibited to demonstrate one's achievements, God will not be present. God comes only where sincerity, faith and surrender are valued. Sing with yearning for Him. Hours of shouting do not count; a moment of concentrated prayer from the heart is enough to melt and move God.

One has to overcome the weakness in faith and enhance the spiritual
emotion and feelings to determine the nearness towards the Supreme Power.
Generally, if one's faith is weak, he/she can himself notice in actions in
the day to day life. In such cases, the heart and mind will be subjected to
trials after trials owing to stress. Sincerity is utmost important in any
task and it is absolutely essential and inescapable fundamental concept
in devotion and worship. If a person has sincerity, he/she will have a
fear towards the Supreme Power and automatically the awareness would
be generated and this act of worship will be without any intention for any
aimed or desired goal. Outward form of obedience and faithful
is insufficient and the person's inner intention is valued in the end.
It does not matter whether one does little or more, heart and mind has
to be towards the Supreme Power at all times without any deviation.

Everybody wants to be happy. One should be happy even in difficulties. You need not search for happiness outside. It is always with you, in you, around you. You are unable to experience it as you have not understood the true meaning of happiness. You are under the illusion that happiness lies in money, wealth and material comforts. Once you have the taste of true happiness, you will not crave for worldly possessions. True happiness springs forth from the depth of one's heart.

There was a man from Puttaparthi who lived in a solitary hut on the banks of the Ganga. He was engaged in severe penance and was admired by other monks. One day, while bathing in the river, he overheard a party of pilgrims who had just alighted from the bus, talking in Telugu. His attachment to his mother tongue dragged him; He asked them where they came from. Slowly, he gathered that they were from Anantapur District, Penukonda Taluk. His ears ached for further details. When they said they were from Puttaparthi, the monk was elated and began enquiring about his lands, family and friends. When he learnt that a few of them had passed away, he started weeping! All his years of penance broke down before the onslaught of language-attachment! Practice detachment from now on, slowly and steadily! Do not continue to add things that bind you to them. Bind yourself to the great liberator, God.

Sometimes we do not have control in ourselves when we enter a place of worship.
Humility has to accompany worship. One cannot achieve a true worship in the
absence of humility. One has to lower oneself in front of the Supreme Power.
If one is faithful in worship, one fetches blessings of the Supreme Power.
If one has faith in worship, the true spirit emerges in him/her with utmost humility
and one can notice obedience in action/deeds. One should not disregard
advises of any elders' saying and one must listen sincerely and perform the
acts or deeds with utmost humility without anticipation of any results. One
can find some people completely broken in the prayer Hall, say sometime start
shouting stating as to what HE has done. If worship is in truth with complete
faith and humility, it becomes wonderful rewards to people. In the Namasmaran
one can find people singing songs in chorus, raising their hands and clapping,
making the new entrants to watch and learn as to how one gets the true
spirit while worshiping. One should have a feeling and belief that if one seeks
earnestly HIS blessings, he/she receives the blessings at sometime or other
may not be immediately.
