CHAPTER 83

In the path of devotion, lies the thorns of impatience, the doubts of being truly saved, and the immediate expectations of fruitful results. Know that when you have chosen the path of devotion, as the devotee, you, My dears, will witness complete darkness, at least once, and only then will you be able to recognize the light that shines within. Be prepared, for several tests will lie ahead - the stream of your tears must flow, O sweet, to clean and purify the layers of impurities with which you have temporarily masked the face of God. You will experience, at first, God as being deaf, dumb and blind to your prayers, for He will only mimic the being that you have become.

When you have called yourself a devotee, you have made the Lord your first and only priority, and you must realize that to attain true devotion, you will have to climb several steps of sacrifice. With God being your only love, all other kinds of love, passions, desires, likes and dislikes must be forgone. Yes! God must begin to live within you, not only for a part time duration, but must be ever present, at all times, thinking, speaking, and acting through the body that He now owns. A true devotee will accept all the ways of the Lord with his head bent with humility, complete faith, and surrender and will not question his own safety at any time, for the one that makes the ultimate sacrifice - the sacrifice of his life to Me, such a one, I will never forsake. The one that has made Me his own family - that fortunate one will grow in the shadow of My love, will be nourished by the nectar of My purity and will breathe, until the end, only the air of truth. The one that has, with sincere gratitude, thanked Me, for shedding his blood with the painful thorns of the lessons he learned, such a child, I will, myself, one day, carry and will dress his wounds with the promise of liberation. The one who remains empty without Me and whose joy only I can fill, such a one, will surely receive My hand as his gift to hold on to for the rest of his life in this world. The one that tirelessly speaks of Me, and the one who hungers and starves when he has not heard of Me, will, one day, be attuned to only the voice of the God within.

Know that I am the courage that beats in the heart of the devoted one. Realize that it is Me that shines in the eyes as faith, it is Me that smiles in the confidence of truth, it is Me that attacks the fortress of your weaknesses, and it is Me that defends the efforts and determination from consequent failings. Each tear that will wash My feet will be repaid with the jewels of knowledge that will only make the tears sweeter and less saltier. Remember that whatever you give Me, will never go in vain, will never be ignored or unaccepted and will never be forgotten. A devotee must not respond to the threats of fear, for he must know that if he shows the signs of defeat, he will be the victim of the wolf that strays in the jungles of the human mind.

The one that offers to Me his heart will continue to live with My heart. The one that has laid his life for letting My name live - will live, forever, to become the name and to become the "Sai" in all!

Namasmarana is the only wealth that lasts forever. Therefore, undertake this Sadhana as a lifelong activity. Whether your voice is good or not, continue to sing the glory of God at least in your heart. Thereby, you will acquire merit that will protect you throughout your life. If you do this Sadhana, God will always help you in all your endeavours, be they physical, moral, worldly, religious or spiritual.

Develop faith in yourselves, so that you can stand like a rock braving the rushing waters of the flood of negation. That faith will make you overcome the changing circumstances of the outer world. Keep the flame of detachment (vairagya) burning with tiny sticks until it grows into a big bonfire; welcome all chances to develop discrimination (viveka). Take the Name of the Lord and repeat it always. Sing to the Lord with faith and enthusiasm. Let the whole environment reverberate with the devotion you put into every Name that you sing. The Lord’s Name promotes comradeship and establishes concord; it stills all storms and grants peace. Become a blossom, exude the fragrance of seva (selfless service) and prema (love); then you will find a place in the garland that adorns the Lord.

The Supreme Power wants to satisfy his/her devotee's desire.
Barriers never existed to the devotees to have darshan of the
Supreme Power. In the Vishnu Suktham, one can find :
Just as the sun's rays in the sky are extended to the ordinary vision,
so in the same way the wise and learned devotees always see
the supreme power. It is the belief and practices that one adopts
particularly the concepts dedication, bhakthi, meditation,
namasmaran, etc. are generally based on the Upanishads, Puranas
are interlinked with the Vedas. It depends on the manner of
approach by a devotee. Devotees have to build their faith
progressively so as to attain the bliss of the Supreme Power.
Some have conflicting statements or versions to narrate about
the power of the Supreme. If one is able to understand the substance
of the Upanishads, one can easily conceive an idea of the existence
of the Supreme Power and would longer for his darshan.

The Right to Be in the Right

The soul will emit its blissful waves of love as long as you respond to what is right.

A right is not an act of convenience but it is an act of truth that allows your mind to return to the silence of peace.

You can receive all the wealth of the world but if you have not utilized the wealth of the soul you shall always be in thought that will lead to worry…

It does not matter how much anyone else is right toward you. You are doing the right only to return to yourself the peace you deserve.

You always know what is fully right… Your soul shall always guide you so… It is you that chooses to divert from it slightly only to receive the quick reward.

The one that argues that he is in the right exposes his fear of being slightly in the wrong.

Does it matter what another thinks of you? What matters most is how comfortable you are at every moment with your own Self…

You have the right to be in the “right”. And you have the right to give up any attachment… any desire that comes in its way…

What exactly is Truth? Is it the description of a 'thing seen' as one has seen it, without exaggeration or under-statement? No. Or, the narration of an incident in the same word as one has heard it narrated? No. Truth elevates; it holds forth ideals; it inspires the individual and society. It is the Light that illumines one’s path to God. A life inspired by Truth will enable man to live as man - not degrade oneself to the status of a lower species. There is God everywhere and there is no second entity. God is the Truth, the only Truth. God is in every article or thing, as the basis, as understanding and understandability, as the source of Divine light, as Atma. Truth is the One Awareness, the One Divine Energy that activates every living being, nay, every particle of matter.

Develop brotherly feelings for all. God is One; there are not many Gods, one for each tribe among men! Love is One; it transcends caste, color and creed, if it has to be genuine. Truth is One; there cannot be two. For, two can only be One, occurring twice. The Goal is One; for, all roads must lead to the One God. Why then should men quarrel and fight over the Eternal and the Absolute?

One has to derive the divine light through spiritual deeds
in place of just overseeing an activity. If a person is able
to attain the divine light, he/she would be able to throw away
the light of Supreme Power over the darkness of ignorance
and unawareness. One can trace the teachings of the Mahans
in our Puranas to get an enlightenment. Inner light of a person
can be opened up by initiation from a Guru through Japa,
Meditation, etc. A person who is interested in getting the
divine power can seek the help of a competent Guru to understand
the concept, so that he/she could get the mind ignited in the
right path and also get relief from emotional disturbances
such as family worries, troubles, etc. and also from darkness
of ignorance. One has to sincerely with dedication attempt to
achieve divine knowledge, so as to get the truth realized.
In the absence of spiritual wisdom, a person is equivalent
to a non-human being.

SAIRAM

You are eternal.
You are not finite.
Nothing can kill you, not even death.
The only death I see,
Is that of Me within you.
Wake up from this deep sleep.
Awaken your conscience.
Ego covers you and dulls your mind.
It blurs your vision.
It hardens your heart.
It makes your hands lazy and inefficient.
Do not associate yourself with this body.
The body dies a hundred deaths.
The soul lives forever.
It cannot be killed.
But you have wounded it and maimed it.
I have come into your life
To heal those wounds.
I will not let you be crippled by attachments.
Listen to the words I speak.
It will start your healing process.
Slowly, your soul will revive.
Return to its home,
And I will be complete.

Today while Science is making rapid strides, morally people are going down. Selfishness and self-interest dominate every one of the many activities. The unlimited proliferation of desires is the root cause of people’s misery and ruination. If you follow two main principles, you can reach the goal of human life: Sarva jiva namaskaaram Keshavam prathi gachathi - the reverence shown to every being reaches God. Sarva jiva thiraskaaram Keshavam prathi gachathi - similarly, insult to any beings amounts to insulting God. Understand and internalize the Omnipresence of the Lord. In the Gita, Krishna declares that sacrificing the fruits of your actions is the best and easiest way of realizing God. Sacrifice (Thyaga) is the only means of attaining liberation. Serve the society, help the poor and needy in distress, and manifest the human quality of compassion.

[TD="width: 738"]I went to Whitefield on 30th of June 1979 to meet the Principal "Sri Sathya Sai Arts, Science and Commerce College." I reached there at about 11 A.M. and went to the Principal's office, but found that he had gone out and would come only on Monday. The day I went to see the Principal was Saturday. Then I went to bus station to catch the bus for Bangalore. When I went to bus station I found that the next bus would come at 12.30 P.M. So I went inside the Ashram because I was in very severe tension, and wanted a quiet place. So I went and sat behind the closed Information Office.
As I was sitting I felt someone's hand on my shoulder. I looked back and saw clearly Baba standing behind me with an evergreen smile on His face. I neglected Him, because I thought I was dreaming. I could not believe it, because Baba was at Puttaparthi at that time.
I again felt someone's hand on my shoulder. This time as I looked behind Baba said, "Tum Bahut Pareshan Hota Hai, Utho, Utho," (You are you worrying so much? Get up, Get up.) I could not believe my eyes but, stood, because it was Baba's order. I was fully taken aback. I became nervous too. Baba then said, "Admission Ke Liye Aya Hai? Abhi Tum Vapas Ghar Jao! Jab Swami Tum Ko Bulayega Tab Tum Ayega. Swami Tum Ko Puttaparthi Me Hi Bulayega. Abhi Tum Vapas Apne Ghar Jao." (You have come for admission. You go back home. Come only when Swami calls you. Swami will call you at Puttaparthi itself. You go back to your home)
Then I said that I wanted to get admission now only. Hearing this Baba said, "Abhi Swami Tum Ko Nahi Bulayega. Abhi Vapas Ghar Jao. Jab Swami Bulayega Tum Aana." (Swami will not call you just now. Return home. When Swami calls you, only then come). I again asked the same thing and Swami again gave me the same answer.
Then I asked why He called me from Lucknow. He said, "Tum Ko Jis Kam Se Swami Ne Bulaya Tha, Woh Kam Pura Ho Gaya Hai. Ab Tum Ghar Jao." (The work for which Swami had called you has been completed. Now, you return home). He further said, "Tumhari Ma Ko Kabhi Kabhi Pet Me Taklif Hoti Hai." (Your mother suffers from stomach pain off and on). I said that I did not know. He said, "Accha, Accha." (Yes, Yes). Saying this He produced Kum Kum and told me to give it to my mother. Then He asked me, "Aaj Swami Ke Charan Nahi Chuyega." (Today, would you not touch the Lotus Feet of Swami.) I fell down at His Lotus Feet at once and when I got up, Swami had disappeared. If there had been no Kum Kum in my hand I would have thought it as a dream, but my hand was full of Kum Kum. So I had to believe it. After that I went back to Bangalore and Lucknow. My mother who was very ill has become normal. Afterwards, Swami did call me f or admission in the newly started College at Puttaparthi.

As we all know, man is born with a heart of sympathy, love, affection, etc
to the fellow human beings in our Society. Affection and care, helping others
are the most important virtues which makes a man complete. Some suppress
these virtues. One can notice through pravachanams, religious scholars explaining
the significance to enhance these most important virtues in them.
We all hear a proverb that service to mankind is service to God. This should
not be just a proverb in quote or in letters but it has to be in spirits. One
may not be charitable person but humanitism is absolutely essential.
If one can serve the poor who are in need of basic things viz. food, clothing,
physical support, listening to their problems, etc. within their means, if possible.
Besides education and awareness in spiritual activities, one can help a person
to understand himself/herself the need for service to the fellow human beings
in one's life. One may have certain limitations of financial strength, in such
cases, one can earmark or prioritize that he may be able to do within his
resources intelligently to help others.

Divine Discourse, Oct 6, 1970.

If one's awareness is turned into different directions without a specific aim or goal,
then it gets into wrong path and the pattern of thought will get spoiled. Hence, one
should perform one's duty perfectly in a meaningful manner. To avoid human judgement
about the existence of Supreme Power in the wrong direction and to keep away from
human criticism on this aspect, wrongly diverted thought processes have to be curbed
completely and one has to be made aware of things that the Supreme Power is
showering on us. If one is able to form a mind in this direction and start doing
good things, he/she will achieve divine energy and power to follow it up. One must
have firm determination in guiding such people, no matter what status he holds, or
in what capacity he is, the energy and divine power will help him/her to come out of
temporary phase quirks.

I have come to tell you of this unitary faith, this spiritual principle, this path of Love, this virtue of Love, this duty of Love, this obligation of Love. 4 July 1968, Baba

Consider it your foremost duty to revere your mother as Divine and serve her. If you cannot respect your mother, who bore you for nine months, brought you forth into the world and cares for you, whom else would you respect? Maternal love is akin to that of the Creator who projects and protects this infinite cosmos in countless ways. You may choose to worship the Divine in the form of a Goddess. Another may worship and adore God in a different form. You should note that the forms in which the Divine is worshipped by others are as important as your own chosen deity. If, on the contrary, you criticize or cast a slur on the deities worshipped by others, you are committing a grievous sin. Similarly, respect and show equal regard and reverence to all mothers (women) as you would to your own mother.

As we all know, Goddess is the supreme Being in the Hindu Tradition and
Shakti is worshiped during Navaratri days. In accordance with Vedas,
Shakti is said to be an illusion and and Shakti and Shiva coexist and they
are inseparable. To destroy the demon Mahishasuran, Goddess Durga
came into being. In North India, Durga Puja is celebrated in a grand
manner. Shri Shooktham, contained in Rig Veda is chanted in all temples
during this period along with Durga Saptha Sloki.

Some of the Homams are performed during this period, to cite a few viz.

Shri Kamalathmikaa Samitha Shri Shooktha Homam to attain wealth
Shri Sathachandi Yagnam to eliminate disturbances and to gain prospective results
Shri Raja Mathangi Mantra Homam to eliminate disturbances from the Govt side
Shri Swayamvara Durga Homam to facilitate early marriages to girls.

Arjuna entered the battlefield, fully equipped and fanatically determined to destroy his enemies. But, when he stood on the battlefield in the chariot driven by Lord Krishna, he saw 'my teachers’, 'my grandfather’, 'my kinsmen’ and 'my cousins'. He was moved so much by this sense of ‘I’ and ‘mine’ that he discarded the bow and desired to return, poor and beaten. The ‘I’ has really nothing to do with earthly possessions, but being deluded he identified himself with earthly relationships. This is the moha (delusion) from which he was saved, through the Bhagavad Gita. Be unmoved by duality; that is the lesson. Let not defeat or success affect your inner calm. See yourself as your Self, unrelated to others or to the objective world. When you know your true Self, you are liberated: that is Moksha.

It is an important one, which one can chant daily, which is
known as Gajendra Stuti.
शुक्लांबरधरं विष्णुं शशि वर्णं चतुर्भुजं
प्रसन्न वदनं ध्यायेत सर्व विघ्नोपशान्तये

One wants to seek eternal liberation and that needs lot
of efforts and practices.Firstly, one has to understand the
purpose and realize the spiritual nature through service
to the Supreme Power. As we all know, a person's soul
is compared to a drop of water and liberation is nothing
but merging into a vast ocean which represents the
Supreme Power. self realization is considered absolutely essential
to achieve Moksha. Karma and Bhakti are part and parcel of it.
There are certain guidelines one has to follow, i.e. selfless work,
deep dedicated meditation and total and absolute concentration
on the Supreme Power.

One should not fear God. One must love Him so much that all acts He disapproves are discarded. Fear to do wrong. Fear to hate another; fear loosing grace. Do not ascribe to God the failures due to your own faults and errors.
