The First Thought of the Soul

The Lord stood by His child in prayer.

He smiled and asked His child,

“Dear sweet one, what makes you think of Me when I am beside you… within you… above you… and around you, keeping you in the bosom of My love?”

The child replied,

“O Sweet Lord, I know You are always there. I also know that You have not forsaken me even for a moment. It is I, O Lord, that forgets to see Your steps beside me when all is well and when I receive from You the fruit of desire. I am weak for I cannot live without my wishes and yet I long for your grace and your strength in me.”

The Lord replied,

“O Child who makes Me full in love, to you I speak truth and truth alone. Yes! I stand with you in your every moment. I have all that you desire in the palm of My Hand. No prayer is impossible for Me to answer… no boon is beyond My reach to give… I give to you what you want when you do not have the patience to wait anymore… I then see you in your moments of temporary joy where you play with the fruit of desire and immerse in its pleasures. You forget that I stand by you. You forget to turn to Me and ask Me for the Hand that holds you and the Universe and all the eye can see… but instead, you thank Me for a moment and forget your gratitude while the fruit of the desire becomes slowly you. And then, when you begin to see its colors in you… you dislike yourself, and suddenly the sweetness of the fruit you tasted becomes bitter. It is not the fruit that changed, My child… it is you who changed from the peace of prayer to the turmoil of wanting yet not waiting for what you asked…”

The child wept, and the tears of repentance cleansed his heart. He turned to his beloved Lord and asked,

“O Lord who knows me more than myself! O Lord who loves me more than I can ever know or understand, to You I wish to return. I asked for all that I never needed… yet, you gave without a word… I asked for You to wait while I enjoyed and chased every wave of desire that emerged from thought. I left You, O Lord, and instead fostered the thought… embraced it, held it in the palm of my hands, and offered thought by thought at Your Lotus Feet. I wished for You to place Your blessed Hand upon each of my thoughts, and asked in prayer to make all of it germinate to life and come true. Now, I see, O Lord, why You waited… why You gave me more time to reflect on my prayer… for each time my thought germinated and the tree of ignorance was born… I fell in the shade and darkness of greed and tasted the sweet bitter fruit that turned my heart into the fears of selfishness, and my mind into the dust of me… me… me… O Lord, I wish to forget the thought I think, and I wish only to think of You beside me… within me… above me… and around me. In that, I remain unchanged no matter what happens, and stay rooted in You.”

The Lord embraced His child and spoke,

“You have asked for Me this time. That gift is already yours. But, I shall give to you the thought of truth as the first thought you shall always think. And whatever thoughts shall follow, they shall turn to the light of the thought of truth and merge into its purity and goodness… The nature of the mind is to think of what it sees… what it hears… what it feels… but if you shall grasp the thought of truth, the mind shall move, yet you shall stay in the bliss of the first thought that you shall remain aware of… alone…

The Universe cannot remain still for you… time cannot give you the same… but if you hold on to the gift of the first thought of truth, then you shall face all of life being aware only of the first thought of truth that I gave to you.”

Suddenly, a flash of light emanated from the Lord and reached the head of His child.

The first thought had placed its brilliance within the child that bent in prayer…

It said,

“I am the only I that you shall speak to and see…

I am the only I that you shall bend to and be…

I am the only I that shall save you and shall make you free…

I am the only I in which truth exists and all that comes returns to Me.”

That is the first and the only thought that the child of God is aware of… and this first thought of truth shall make any child of God at any moment return to the bliss of his source…

The ascend to a human form has been made possible for you all; but you will truly be deserving of this high status among the animals, only by finally merging in the Divine. That is the goal which the pilgrimage of evolution has in view since life began on earth as the amoeba on the waters. Faith in that goal and steady march towards it, are the signs of one being aware of the responsibility of being a human. The Call of the Divine echoes in every heart; it provokes the reaction of awe, reverence, affection, love and sacrifice - all ingredients of devotion (bhakthi). It translates itself into acts of worship, of praise, of adoration and of rituals. The mind through these means gets saturated with divine thoughts and is recast in the divine mould, until the flow of bliss (Aananda) is unabated.

Some people are very humble during their life time to foster the
devotion with humility. One tries to find the hidden information
in our Scriptures towards Bhakthi and devotion and also pursues
the greatness of the Supreme Power so as to conceive the
immeasurable greatness of the Supreme being. While some people
have absolute faith in their deeds, others just do it for the sake
of their well-wishers unwillingly. One should possess confidence
and penetrate into the theme of HIS glory to attain HIS bliss. Primarily
perfection of virtues is most important to seek the grace of Supreme
Power with the effect of prayers imprisoning the mind and heart into
HIM. Humble prayer with sincerity never fails to achieve the desired
results. Devotees who have more will power and faith can achieve
the results at an earliest period. May be it is little difficult to transform
the mind into this act, setting aside other domestic commitments
initially. As children love their mother with honour and affection,
a devotee has to turn his mind and heart into the Supreme Power
with complete involvement.

I come only where sincerity, faith and surrender are valued. So spend the silent hours in meditation and naamasmarana (remembering the Lord’s name) in your own homes and deepen faith. I do not need bhajans which, like gramophone records, reproduce songs and naamaavalis, without any feeling or yearning while singing. Hours of shouting do not count; a moment of concentrated prayer from the heart is enough, to melt and move God.

Mantra means that which saves, when meditated upon. The Name of God, any one of His countless ones, can serve the purpose. The Name is like the goad that can tame the elephant in rut, make it bend its knees and lift the log on to its tusks. Liberation (Moksha) is not a five-star hotel, or a deluxe tourist home. It is just the awareness of your reality and the rejection of all contrary conceptions. You can recognise your Self quickly and clearly, if you purify your heart with a mantra or by the singing of the glory of God. Both will grant you that boon. Sing from the heart, conscious of the layers of meaning that each word has. These are the surest ways to have God firmly installed in the throne of your hearts and it will redeem your lives.

All our Mantras are from Puranas or Scriptures. Thus they have
a Vedic background. Since the mantras are in Sanskrit, chanting
them with proper pronounciation or accent gives the power not only
to our physical body but also to our mind and heart, besides
calmness. Regular chanting of mantras, provides a higher
platform to understand the inner mind and consciousness.
As the mantras have different accent of lower and higher level
with emphasis on the sound, it gives an indirect effect on the
physical structure too. For example, suppose, we visit a hill station
fields, or an area where number of trees are there, we find a soft
melodious sound of wind emerging from the leaves of the trees
when the breeze blows and it gives a relief to our physical structure
and to the mind produces happiness as it soothes our nerves.
Besides, the musical note of the mantras eliminates the fear or
troubles in a person. However, the accent is very important.
If a person does this exercise regularly, it can certainly bring an
excellent change in a person providing him/her physical energy
and mental power. Vedas, Upanishads, Scriptures have many mantras
and all these have to be learnt through a Guru. Firstly, one should
understand the Sampradayams in doing it. Whenever we commence,
we start with Om or Aum, etc. This itself brings amazing change
in our bodily senses.

Touching the Soul

One is born with the dream of many desires. During his lifetime he concentrates on them and manages to fulfill some of the many. And at the time of death he leaves

with the pain in his heart of his unfulfilled desires.

One wants only to receive what another has already or he wants only to show another what he has and the other does not have yet…

One can never stir the soul with the fulfillment of a desire. It is only the mind that rejoices in receiving what it has concentrated on for some time. The soul is always the witness of the mind’s joy… never a part of it…

When one sees all that comes to him as the gift of God and His grace and without a thought, he gives all that he has received for the benefit of mankind… then in return he experiences a silent mind… and a joy that emanates in waves from his soul.

The joy one receives from the mind is temporary. For one second the mind will rejoice upon an easy receiving and then the very next moment it will taunt you on your limited success.

The mind is like a stomach with a hole. Whatever you feed it, it takes for some time, and then it leaks and becomes empty again. It then growls until you feed it with a fulfillment of yet another desire.

No doubt you have to think in order to do but you do not have to do whatever you think…

No one can give you peace. Until you have served your soul… fully without a speck of impurity, until then you shall not know that peace is never given or received… peace is the nature of the soul that is unhindered by any thought and any circumstance.

The outcome of every wish is a million thoughts. You must not worry if they shall be fulfilled… you must concentrate on not wishing a “wish” ever again…

You begin to dislike anything or anyone who comes in the way of your wishes… And when the wish does come to fruition one begins to realize that he lost much more to fulfill this wish rather than gaining anything…

The one who gains all the riches of this world is still not happy. He keeps his worldly wealth aside and goes in search of his own soul!

One becomes impure in order to gain what he wishes and after he receives his wish he cries and begs for his soul to rejoice in his win… but the soul with its silence reminds him that his win was another loss…

To be in constant touch with the soul one has to do always what is “right” and be always in the company of the absolute truth…

The soul is the eternal companion of every being. It shall never deceive you… The mind on the other hand befriends you for one moment and deceives you the very next…

First say to yourself, “I must be good…” Inspire yourself and be in the right… Say to yourself, “I will do not only what is right for me… I will do… think… speak… only what will make me respect myself when I am in the presence of God… And I am in His presence at every moment whether I see it or not, know it or not, and remember it or not. God is there with me… right now”.

The supreme Shakti manifests Herself in the form of Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswathi. Durga grants us energy - physical, mental and spiritual. Lakshmi bestows on us wealth - not just money but intellectual wealth, the wealth of character, goodness and health. Health is also wealth! Saraswati bestows on us intelligence, the capacity for intellectual enquiry and the power of discrimination. Hence, Navaratri (nine-nights) festival is celebrated in order to proclaim to the world the power of the Divine Mother. One's own mother is the combination of all these Divine beings. She provides you with energy, wealth and intelligence. She constantly desires your advancement in life and hence represents all the three Goddesses. Recognising one's mother as the very embodiment of all divine forces, one must show reverence to her and treat her with love. This is the true message that the Navaratri festival gives us.

Spiritual bliss is an essential requisite for a person to attain the
soul happiness and contentment in achieving the divine power.
Once a person is able to achieve the divine power and divine
bliss, he/she will be free from all sorts of pain, worry/troubles
and would not have any suffering whatsoever may be. Unless
one is completely dedicated and devoted and involved in spiritual
exercises or practices, it may not be possible for a person to
experience the above emotional feelings. Hence every moment
one spends in a day, has to think of the Supreme Power and do
all the acts or deeds in HIS glory. If it is done sincerely with
dedication absolutely surrendering oneself to HIM, it is
possible to form oneself in such a way that he/she can be on
the right path towards spiritual bliss. While a person is on this exercise,
one may come across or face umpteen problems but then one
should not loose the dedication or diversion from that concept
which ultimately brings the needed contentment and to be free
from material worry or domestic sufferings.

For a person living in the materialistic world, the sensual pleasures are a source of extreme delight. However, the senses themselves are temporary, and hence grant only transitory joy. To a person suffering from jaundice, everything looks yellow and tastes bitter. So too senses fraught with illness cannot give true happiness. As there is no person without desire, and it is difficult to live without desire in this world, Lord Krishna came out with an excellent solution. He said, “Perform all actions for the pleasure of the Lord without an eye on the fruits of the action.” Pay your respect to duty and dedicate all actions to the Divine. Ensure you do all actions to the satisfaction of your conscience and then your heart is free from all blemishes. Such an action qualifies to become an act of Anapeksha, not tainted by desire.

Discipline of the body and mind are absolutely essential to
perform certain acts of gnana and karma yoga. Similarly
bakthi can also be termed as emotional yoga. When a person
adopts gnana and karma yoga, bakthi yoga too gets merged
with it because one's heart, body and mind is concentrated
on a particular concept of devotion towards the Supreme
Power. Bhakthi facilitates to learn the spiritual discipline.
Besides one has to make a conscious continuous effort to
be near to the Supreme Power through disciplined devotion
in the form of Bhakthi. Puja, prayer, physical worship like
Anga Pradakshinam, etc are to express the love towards the
Supreme Power in the form of bhakthi yoga.

[TD="width: 738"]Once a devotee asked Bhagawan: “Swami, what is Tripura Rahasyam?” Bhagawan smiled and said, “Let Me tell you a story.” He continued, “Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara once had a doubt. Now if we have a doubt we can go to our teacher, if great Masters have a doubt they approach Brahma, Vishnu, Maheshwara… but if these Lords themselves have a doubt Whom will they approach? Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara approached the Shakti or Tripura Devi Who created them, the Shakti that manifested them. Mother Tripura Devi humbly submitted and said, "Even I do not have answer to Your questions".
“But I do know where You can find an answer to this question of Yours. So She took Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara of that Brahmanda (universe) to a location. It had a huge gateway and She flung it open and in there they saw a long hallway.”
Swami then said, “On the both sides of the hallway there were thousands of thrones and the four legs of the thrones were Brahma, Vishnu, Maheshwara and Tripura Devi. These three Gods Who had this doubt in their minds were stunned to see thousands of Brahmas, Vishnus, Maheshwaras and Tripura Devis. They thought they were alone but then they were more inquisitive to see Whom were they prostrating to. At the end of the hallway they saw a beautiful Lotus Feet and when they craned their neck to see Who that personality was, they saw Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba is The Cosmic Avatar, He is the Adi Purusha Who manifested Himself to become Shakti and that Shakti in turn manifested into many Tripura Devis and each one initiated a creation. Even science recognizes today that there could be several universes in parallel. There are many Brahmandas (universes) and the Adi Purusha (Primordial Being) Who manifested the Adi Shakti to initiate creation, the Power Who willed to manifest into many Brahmandas Itself came here on this beautiful Earth as a Cosmic Visitor.” Such is the beautiful Form of our Lord Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai!!!

Whenever we do Dharma or Dhanam, it is generally mentioned by
our ancestors that things should be given by the right hand with
full heart and sympathy rather than by the left hand. It has some
significance. Besides, it has certain concepts of beliefs. Normally
the left hand is used for personal hygiene cleanliness. Hence it
it is treated as unclean. Worship of Deities have certain moral codes
according to our scriptures. Once a person conceives spiritual
perception, it becomes easy to attain spiritual union with the
Supreme Power and the distance is narrowed down. The attainment
of such a stage requires mental rigidity and firmness in the spiritual
deeds. Purity of heart and sincerity in one's efforts facilitates
divine recognition and makes way to quench the thirst for divine
proximity. One may have limitations but the determination brings in
the desired results.

The subtle effect of mantras (mystic formulae) mentioned in the Vedas cannot be seen or heard by the senses; they have to be experienced in and through the inner consciousness, the Anthahkarana. The sound of these mantras has the power to transform the impulses and tendencies. The word mantra means ‘that which saves when turned over in the mind’. Repeating the mantra constantly in the mind will keep off wild talk, purposeless conversation, aimless gossip and scandal. Talk only when the talk is most essential and talk only as little as is necessary. Talk sweetly and without any reservations or circumvention. I want all to be convinced of the excellence of these teachings of the Vedas and Shasthras(scriptures).

It is generally said that Mantras are to be learnt from a Guru, who
would be able to guide us to pronounce it properly so as to get its
benefit and avoid ill effects. Some Mantras are classified and they
are taught only by the Guru. Mantras act as a tool to bring the
desired energy and awaken one's subconscious. Bija Mantras have
to be learnt only through a Guru, though it is available in the books.
It creates vibrations and influences the mind and soul. Chanting of
Mantras will give happiness and pleasure to a person and it transforms
the senses. Sometimes, one can notice by regular chanting, negative
effects getting changed into positive ones. Some chant mantras to
get protected from negative reactions and to get away from obstacles
besides earning divine energy. There is a statement in Sanskrit, i.e.
mananaat traayate iti mantra. There is a vast difference between Mantra
and Nama Kirtana or Japam. It has certain guidelines, as mentioned earlier.
The alpabhet, the general syllable has to be understood and its pronunciation
besides, Swaram, Maatra, uttering each syllable with the proper tune
which is very important besides the emphasis or stress on it. In some books
one can notice, on the top sides of a word, numbers like 2, 3 etc being
printed. All this are clear instructions about the maatra.

Making Peace

There will always be differences of opinion between two minds. One has to learn to respect the differences without being agitated. No matter what your mind or another’s says, ultimately you have to go inward to receive guidance and obey the laws laid down by the conscience.

In your lifetime you must befriend God and be patient in the relationship with all else. Whatever you need, ask only from God… never ask or want from anyone else in life.

There is no need to make an enemy ever… Do not feel disturbed or pain when someone does not like you. Do not retaliate or be vengeful in return. Ask God to fill you with love so that you can ignore the weaknesses of all others and concentrate on improving your own.

First learn to respect yourself. Place the principles of goodness in your heart and abide by them moment to moment. It does not matter how much another knows of it or sees it. As long as you remain concentrated in your efforts and content in your focus all doubts that come your way shall be cleared at the precise time.

It is impossible to be liked by all in this world. As long as you desire it is impossible for you to like all, too. The root of differences is desire. In order to experience peace you may have to choose either between keeping the desire and foster the hatred or to give up the desire… eliminate the ego, and welcome the silence of love… unity and peace…

Be the first one to extend your hand to make peace. Remember, to choose peace over dispute is the way of the wise and the good.

The restless man stopped the wise one and asked, “O Wise one that smiles with the eyes and speaks the word of peace with your word, to you I ask, ‘How do you see all as good?’” The wise one replied, “O Gentle one that seeks truth, I shall answer to you what I know. I have placed the “I” of my ego in constant prayer, and with the eye of our father in heaven I see the world. I know not what I receive… I recognize not who comes to me… I see only the stream of goodness that comes from our father in heaven and reaches my soul… And I see the same stream of goodness pour from His chest into the wells of your soul. And I weep in joy… I wish to know you not… I wish to know not what you have done and what you do. I wish not to know your name… I wish not to know if you have followed being good or not… All I wish to see is the stream of goodness that flows from our Lord to you and me. Anything else is not important for me to see… I walk looking at the heavens above, and I forget to see who walks as “me” and watches the Lord in the heavens above. I remember not what you have asked, for I see only the goodness of God watching over you and me… “

The restless man replied, “O Wise one that knows not yourself or your way or me, to you I bow and say, ‘I know now that to be good and to see all is good, one has to forget his self and the world and watch the goodness of God descend from the heavens into his soul. And seeing that, all life… at every moment is enough and makes one complete!’”

Udhaseena (detachment marked by renunciation) is a state that is neither complacence nor indifference. It means detachment from good as well as bad. I will explain this with an illustration: When a thorn gets into your foot, you use another thorn to remove the first one. After this you will have to discard both the thorns. You should not keep with you the second thorn though it has helped you in removing the first thorn. This is how you must gradually renounce the good and the bad. We should gradually cut down our relationship with the world. Most importantly do not enter into activities that induce unnecessary relationships, for that will prove detrimental to one’s welfare.

In Science we read that every action has a reaction. We do certain
things based on certain concepts or aiming certain goal. In this Janma
we have been assigned certain duties. Sometimes, we are not acting
on our own and are generally influenced by situation or environment.
Our ancestors have clearly explained us about the papam and punyam and
they too have explained about the differences also as to why one should not
do deeds of papam. Sometimes one does it balancing the deeds so as
to satisfy the community or the people in and around. Finally, it reflects
on the doer. Therefore, one should not blindly do anything without knowing
the implications. There is no purpose in thinking or worrying about a deed
if it is going to produce an ill effect. Similarly one should not be a witness
to ill deeds too. Our ancient Vedas clearly mention about all these aspects
and there are many examples in our Spiritual books as to how one should
