Dear Brothers and Sisters,

As you may be aware, the low-lying coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha in Eastern India are in the path of the cyclonic storm, Phailin that is likely to make landfall on Saturday, Oct 12.

This impending cyclonic storm Phailin has brewed over east central Bay of Bengal, intensifying into a 'very severe cyclonic storm' of Category 5 strength on a scale of 1 to 5.
The super-cyclone in 1999 that killed around 15,000 people in Odisha was a Category 5 storm too. Dear Readers, prayers have tremendous power and collective and selfless prayers are even more powerful.
This is a sincere request that you join us to pray for the safety and well being of all forms of life that lie in the path of this cyclone. Let us pray as one voice to mother nature to calm her fury, and pass by these areas without any devastation. Let us sanctify this Navaratri by praying individually or/and in groups so that this cyclone downgrades in its intensity before making landfall.
May our sisters and brothers in coastal parts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha be spared from the wrath of the cyclone.
May all the beings in all the worlds be safe and happy!
Samastha Lokaha Sukhino Bhavantu!

Pease share this appeal with others too.

At His service,
Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation &

Udhaseena (detachment marked by renunciation) is a state that is neither complacence nor indifference. It means detachment from good as well as bad. I will explain this with an illustration: When a thorn gets into your foot, you use another thorn to remove the first one. After this you will have to discard both the thorns. You should not keep with you the second thorn though it has helped you in removing the first thorn. This is how you must gradually renounce the good and the bad. We should gradually cut down our relationship with the world. Most importantly do not enter into activities that induce unnecessary relationships, for that will prove detrimental to one’s welfare.

SAIRAM

All religions teach one basic discipline: the removal from the mind of the blemish of egoism, of running after little joy. Every religion teaches man to fill his beings with the Glory of God and evict the pettiness of conceit. It trains him in methods of detachment and discrimination, so that he may aim high and attain liberation. Believe that all hearts are motivated by the One and Only God; that all faiths glorify the One and Only God; that all names in all languages and all forms man can conceive, denote the One and Only God; His adoration is best done by means of love. Cultivate that attitude of Oneness, between men of all creeds, all countries and all continents. That is the message of love, I bring. That is the message I wish you to take to heart.

You must renounce attachment, hatred and ego. It is these qualities of attachment and ego that play havoc with a person and cast them into the mire of delusion. Ego leads to ostentatiousness and ostentatiousness strengthens the ego. A person can never experience divine bliss as long as one is swayed by the ego. Lord Krishna reveals to Arjuna in the Gita, “Ego, attachment and ostentatiousness are Rajasik qualities (passionate temperaments). These three are very dangerous and they bring on disaster! If anyone cultivates these habits, knowingly or unknowingly, they are not betraying others, but are deceiving themselves!” Resolve and achieve victory over your ego. With firm faith, make an intense effort to rid yourself of evil qualities. I bless you to carry out your convictions successfully and accomplish this victory with utmost ease!

As Baba says, one has to make intense efforts to get rid of evil virtues such
as Lust, Anger, Greedy, Emotional Attachment, besides ego. Evil
minded person normally will have weaker qualities and would not be able to control
their senses. There is no meaning in doing wrong things and later regret for the
mistakes. One may notice that some people may not be able to develop themselves
because of their anger, egoism at times. Further emotional attachments to certain
unwanted things too bring disaster in life. One has to understand the merits of
good deeds in life. Because of bad deeds, purity of mind gets spoiled. Some people
think because of their ego, that they have everything under their control and they
have the powers to do anything and in the process, they lose the precious value
of human life. Egotism, selfishness, conceit, foolish qualities, ignorance and unknowing
the value of merits of good needs, faithless virtues in spiritual activities, etc. lead
a person to negative aspects in life. Sometimes it may be difficult to get rid of
these qualities. But then, if one wants to reform oneself, one has to attend the
Satsang activities, visit temples, do meditation, japam, etc. One may get the
grace of Supreme Power by chanting HIS Namasmaranam regularly by confessing
to HIM for the mistakes or faults done over the period.

Every one of you must fit in with the Divine Plan. Strive to know its main principles and be equipped for the tasks He allots to you. Give your heart completely to the duty assigned to you in life. Be ever vigilant of your own nature and duty (swadharma) and engage in the tasks that your role demands. To attain the Divine, you have to climb from the animal state to the human state and from human level to Divinity. This climb is hard given the several forces that are always around you, ready to pull you downward. The engine in the car if clogged and worn out, will whine and groan when it has to ascend a steep hill. On the other hand if it is well-maintained, free from the dust and dirt of sensory yearning, then it will ascend heights very easily.

Because of laziness, one may loose the zeal in pursuing the acts of divine
deeds. One should not feel divine duty as a burden. If one adjusts his mind
and heart to do the divine deeds, he/she will not worry about the comforts
or pleasures in life. People living in hill stations or in heat areas, do not
worry about the cold or heat and do not fail to do service to the Supreme
Power in the temples that are located there. One has to have complete
trust in the God and dwell in an arena where the Satsang people reside and
develop the faith for doing the Service to the Supreme Power. One has to
have confidence but not laziness or recklessness. A sage never worry
about the extreme cold when he is doing Tapas. A wise man may see the
evils but do not get under that umbrella and keeps away from it. If one
experiences the pleasure of serving the Supreme Power, the laziness will not
bother him/her. If one starts or looks for good deeds for doing service to
the Supreme Power, it will be easy for him/her to keep away from bad deeds
and slowly he/she will become a Master to guide others. Therefore, one
has to have concentration on the divine duties on good thoughts, words/deeds
without any speculation or wavering in mind and heart. Above all, one
has to have complete consciousness towards spiritual responsibilities.

SAIRAM

Sairam,

Many people think that God writes their destiny OR their destiny cannot be changed due to their past Karmic actions. That is certainly NOT true. Swami says we all can change our destiny or future by altering our actions at any time.

Swami tells the following story,

"Let me narrate a story to explain this principle. Once two young men approached a sage and as they sat in front of him, the sage opened his eyes, looked at one of them and said, “You my son, will become a king, you have that destiny.” The young man was elated. He looked at the other one and said, “I am sorry son, you are going to die within a year.” Both left for their village, one was down in the dumps and the other was too happy for words. The man who was destined to become a king, started thinking and living like a king. Soon he developed all the vices and started spending whatever stored money he had and threw his weight around. He became callous, selfish and didn’t bother about anybody else. The other man who was destined to die, was despondent for some days and then realized that he should do something as his time is limited. He started to thank everyone who made a difference to his life and slowly started to help others thus changing his perspective completely. He was slowly preparing for his death.

One year passed; neither the first man became a king nor did the second man die. They decided to meet the sage and clarify as to why his words didn’t come true. They set off and were going through a forest, when unfortunately for them, they were attacked by dacoits. The man who was to become a king was more agile. He quickly climbed a tree and hid himself in the foliage while the other man ran. But he was caught and beaten up by the dacoits. The dacoits, later buried a pot of gold which was their loot, under a tree and it so happened that it was the same tree on the top of which the first man was hiding. When the dacoits left for their next mission, this man got down, dug up the place, took the pot of gold, searched for the friend, and reached the sage. They asked the sage as to why his prediction did not come true. The sage replied, “Yours was the destiny to die but due to the good activities you did, it got reduced to injury, but this man wasted his time and so his kingship got reduced to a pot of gold.”

"Actions that we do today can affect us tomorrow and the backlog can be changed. "

As per the story, the person who was suppose to die, did not die but only got injured. At the same time, the person who was suppose to become the King, did not become a King and ONLY won a pot of gold.

So we do control our destiny. Forget the past i.e. the bad actions you have performed. We can change our future at any time. To get out of Karmic cycle, Swami says, “Install Him in your heart, make Him the basis of all your actions, then all your actions will become sacred.”

Prayer and contrition are the two disciplines by which the mind can be cleansed of egoism and hatred; Saint Tyagaraja was a fine example of how this can be done. His songs are pure fragrant blossoms of devotion. He sang soulfully the glory of Rama, with the welfare of the individual as well as the world in view. He was ever engaged in the process of examining his words and deeds, and evaluating them on the touchstone of devotion. As the bee in quest of honey wanders in search of the flowers, as the creeper clings fast and fondly to the tree lest it may fall, as the stream runs to the river and the river rushes to the sea, Saint Thyagaraja pined for Lord Rama. Lord Rama had to give him personal audience (Darshan) and come to his rescue several times. Through devotion,Tyagaraja ensured he experienced the Lord’s constant presence and always remained in peace and joy.

Normally, in our house too, if a child loves an object/toy, he/she goes
around that often and as he/she gets up from the bed too after a long
sleep, the child immediately looks for that object. Thus, if one loves
an object, more the one is devoted to it. Devotion is thus love manifested.
A mother always likes to keep her baby in her lap. She loves the baby so much
that she never avoids to lift the baby. Her heart is happy in that love and
she feels to spend more time with the baby and never feels enough. She
longs to love it more and more. In fact her heart yearns to love more and more
and she loves the baby to the utmost satisfaction of her soul. This longing
love of her enhances her capacity to love towards the child by manifold with
no bounds. Similarly, every living thing consciously or unconsciously looks
for this without any intervention. Day after day, if true devotion grows and
once it is established, HIS grace falls on the devotee. To be precise, there
will be no pleasure or happiness unless there is development in the stages
of devotion to a true Devotee.

Just as underground water is the sustenance of all trees, the Atma is the underlying source of all the bliss that the individual experiences. The process of digging a borewell to bring the underground water to surface level involves steady hitting, digging, and thumping through a pipe which holds and directs the drill. The people who do the boring take a lot of care to ensure that air does not go into the pipe, for then the drilling process becomes unsuccessful. FInally through a lot of effort, you bring the subterranean water to the surface level for human consumption. So too, you must undertake the repetition of the Lord’s Name (Japam) very intensely taking care that you do not allow the attachment to worldly objects (Vishaya vasana) to enter and interfere with the process.

As is being discussed quite often, a devotee has to have a knowledgeable
guru to guide him/her to understand the spiritual knowledge and proceed ahead.
A Guru may be able to teach a devotee to understand the Atma and Anatma
so as to differentiate between bondage and liberation. If one chants regularly
Atma and Paramatma continuously, one would be able to feel the difference.
Practicing spritual path needs patience and perseverance with spiritual disciplines.
If one desires to attain success in the spiritual pursuit one has to learn the proper methods
and practice sincerely and diligently. Further one needs mental control and
dynamic will power to pursue this practice. To accomplish this, one has to
keep away from circumstances or environment which may not sometimes
cooperate with him/her. Exercising the will power, one has to concentrate on
prayer or meditation continuously so as to attain the spiritual state without
being pressurized by emotional feelings of the mind and senses. To attain
spiritual maturity, dedicated sadhana is absolutely essential.

Madhav Dikshit was an accountant working for a firm in Mangalore and regularly had his lunch at the lodge. We often used to meet in this place and have interesting conversations about life in Shirdi and the final days of Shirdi Sai Baba. I told him about the valuable information that Shirdi Baba had given to his uncle before His ‘Maha Samadhi’, viz. I will leave My body soon and will come again as a boy of eight years of age. I further explained to him that Dabholkar wrote all these details in the Marathi version of the book Sri Sai Satcharita on the second page. Madhav Dikshit was fully aware of all these details, but what he did not know was that Shirdi Baba had already incarnated in the form of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. He could not believe it as he said that he was constanly in touch with the devotees in Shirdi and they were not aware of this fact!
I requested him to accompany me to Puttaparthi and told him of my experience with Beloved Swami, which he listened with interest. On my next visit to Puttaparthi during my holidays, Dikshit and his wife as well as some other devotees came along, making a group of twelve. After travelling about eight hours via Bangalore, we arrived in Puttaparthi just as Baba was coming out of the interview room. As soon as He saw me, He asked: "Have you brought Dikshit with you? He stayed with Swami for eight years, is it not so?" Madhav Dikshit was surprised and replied, “Yes Swami, You are exactly right.”
He took us into the interview room and materialised Vibhuti and distributed it to all. Everyone was very happy to receive this Divine Vibhuti and also to see it being materialised! Swami put some questions to Dikshit in front of us, which we were not aware of at the time: "Do you get any more headaches after I slapped you on your forehead at Shirdi?" Madhav Dikshit was stunned; tears streamed down his cheeks and he fell at Swami’s Feet - performing sashtang pranam at His most Divine Lotus Feet. Baba said: "This is not enough, further proof will be given during the personal interview!"
In the personal interview with Madhav Dikshit, Swami gave all the details of the incidents that happened in Shirdi.
But the most important revelation was about Kakasaheb Dikshit. Beloved Swami said: Kaka was a lazy fellow. Shirdi Baba did not say that He would appear as a boy of eight, but that He would come after eight years. Kaka did not record these details straightaway and did not remember the imporatant facts correctly. Swami revealed the minutest details about what happened with Madhav when he was in Shirdi, which convinced him beyond any doubt that Sathya Sai Baba is the incarnation of Shirdi Sai Baba.

Every being seeks rest, but the dust of sense-craving accumulates on the mind producing rust and threatening to ‘burst’ it! To remove the rust in your mind, listen to soulful compositions from great saints like Tyagaraja. Lay aside your cynicism for a while and listen to the captivating tunes and imbibe their essence. The science of spiritual culture and of the control of the mind has been developed, practised and perfected by thousands, for over thousands of years. The culture of India has stood the shock of ages and the fury of typhoons, using these methods. Sing and listen to the compositions of great saints in their traditional forms. Do not consider these divine compositions as mere paatalu (songs), they are truly mootalu (bundles) of precious gems, that will lead you on the baatalu (path) to the Divine.

The social problems confronting us today needs lot of attention
and the pattern of thinking drives us to pursue spiritual activities
so as to achieve self realization. Some look for individual freedom,
unlimited opportunity to compete for material well being and pleasures
etc. rather than paying attention towards spiritual activities. In order
to pursue their own ends, sometimes economic initiative does not
give them a hand because of community thinking. Lack of common
purpose for the common good on the grounds of culture by individuals
possessed by individualism do not transfer their way of thinking towards
spiritual acts or deeds. Whereas a Satsang enables a person to proceed
towards the spiritual journey. It enables to have good thoughts and
facilitates to have answers to the questions of doubts, which remain
unanswered in them. Sometimes, spiritual impurity pollutes the environment.
Association with a Satsang also enables a person to share their obstacles
in spiritual practice besides they are able to understand the significance
of a Satsang. Satsang thus transforms into a platform to nurture and
develop positive thinking towards spiritual deeds and acts and stimulates
the mind of the devotee to become stronger in spiritual practice besides
tempting them to do daily practice without any interference. In the
process, the divine consciousness emanates in their mind.

The path of wisdom is much easier than the path of devotion – for it comes as a flash to those who can just sit quiet for a few minutes and analyze themselves. A car moves on its four wheels and the person who drives it, is inside, not outside; the driver within the car guides the speed of the engine, the brakes and the accelerator. So too, let your intellect, mind and senses be guided, from within. Board the train of Salokya - the constant remembrance of the Lord’s Name. This will take you to the next station, Sameepya - nearness and dearness to the Lord. The next halt will be at Saarupya, where you acquire and earn divine attributes, and finally you will reach the terminus, which is Saayujya, where you merge with the divine and experience yourself as but a wave in the ocean (Paramatma).

Normally in our house, one notices love and affection towards the
children from the parents. The parents are interested that their children
should lead a good life and they should be happy in their life without any
problems. Thus, they see the children do possess good behavior and
conduct from the childhood itself. That is why a parent takes care to
see that children are obedient and possess discipline to behave with
elders and relatives, etc. They also see that their children should not
hurt the feelings of others and earn bad name to themselves. Some parents
do show anger out of love to make the children understand the status
of fear and resultant punishment, etc. But at the same time, they give
the children everything that they need to lead a happy life. Disciplinary
measures are not accepted just like that, and it becomes bitter at times.
As the parents set some guidelines to the children to choose to follow the
right path, it is also important to everyone to follow a right path towards
spiritual discipline too. We have read in our scriptures that a King/Queen
does not rule the Kingdom just like that. He/She had to take lot of troubles
to protect the sovereignty. To attain divine discipline and enjoy the fruits
of it, it is inevitable for us to be in the right path of spiritual acts or deeds
and not diverting the mind and senses towards emotional feelings or deeds.
Divine disciplines moulds a person's character. Sometimes one has to put
up with problems and sufferings so as to attain the divine bliss and one should
not loose confidence or faith if there is a delay, which is likely. One should
have courage to address the problems. Through sustained efforts and
endurance, with the help of divine discipline, one can easily attain the divine
bliss.
