The path of wisdom is much easier than the path of devotion – for it comes as a flash to those who can just sit quiet for a few minutes and analyze themselves. A car moves on its four wheels and the person who drives it, is inside, not outside; the driver within the car guides the speed of the engine, the brakes and the accelerator. So too, let your intellect, mind and senses be guided, from within. Board the train of Salokya - the constant remembrance of the Lord’s Name. This will take you to the next station, Sameepya - nearness and dearness to the Lord. The next halt will be atSaarupya, where you acquire and earn divine attributes, and finally you will reach the terminus, which is Saayujya, where you merge with the divine and experience yourself as but a wave in the ocean (Paramatma).

People suffer from two types of ills – physical and mental. Physical ailments are caused by the dis-equilibrium of the three tempers of Vata, Pittha and Sleshma (air, bile and phlegm) and mental illnesses are caused by the dis-equilibrium of the three qualities of serenity, passion and inertia (Sattwa, Rajas and Tamas). One unique fact about these two types of illnesses is that the cultivation of virtue cures both the diseases. Physical health and mental health are interrelated. Physical health is a prerequisite for mental health and good mental health ensures physical well-being. An attitude of generosity, of fortitude in the presence of sorrow and loss, a spirit of enthusiasm to do good, and to be of service to the best of one’s capacity - these build up the mind as well as the body. The sheer joy derived from service reacts on the body and makes you free from diseases.

Devotion is nothing but equivalent to a shadow under a tree. Can we
assess this as to how the statement could be true. One faces umpteen
challenges in life and many unanticipated disappointments. Sometimes,
when a person gets into trouble and no one is coming forward to give a
solace, he/she immediately rushes to the Supreme Power to seek HIS
shelter. If a person walks for quite a distance under hot sun, he/she
looks for shadow and comes & stands under a tree for physical relief.
As a true friend comes forward to extend help to a needy, the Supreme
Power comes forward to extend assistance to his/her devotee when he/she
is dire troubles. Devotional and Bhakthi stories that are heard through
Pravachanams can be a vehicle for a person to seek a change in life
and looks for mental healing instantly. If one has absolute faith in the
Supreme Power, sooner or later, by sowing a devotional seed, a devotee
can reap the benefits without any ambiguity. Though environment and
circumstances may lead a person to look for asylum, feelings of panic,
helplessness, lack of control in mind & senses and inability to do anything
to overcome from the troubled situation, it is the devotional acts or deeds,
that could heal a person's mental illness. Thus a regular devotional deed
or act, could certainly pave a way for a person's mental peace and
show a path towards the spiritual consciousness.

The pleasure one gets from physical, mental and intellectual pursuits is transitory. Good deeds may grant heaven but it is a temporary habitation from where a person has to journey down to earth to live life again. This is akin to being elected to an important but short term public office. One may bask in the glory and fame during the term of office, thanks to the votes cast in one’s favour. However, once the term is over, one becomes an ordinary person again! The game now starts all over again by repeating popular slogans to become more popular and beg for votes to win the election. You must journey to reach the terminus where ignorance dies and wisdom is born, resulting in no more birth and death cycles. The mind is a fertile field for ignorance. Do not seek more and more comfort and convenience (sukham), instead, seek wisdom.

Pravachanam listening and attending Satsang activities are one of the
methods which can lead a person in the right path to attain spiritual
wisdom. We have a number of Scriptures, which can enlighten a person.
But, however, one need to study constantly to refresh the mind about
the spiritual aspects so that if any garbage i.e. wrong thinking can be
washed out. Spiritual wisdom is the basic thing for a person to look upon
the Supreme Power and mental nourishment besides sustenance of good
deeds and preservation of right path. One has to understand the basic
yardstick i.e. the concept of truth, righteousness and uprightness of
mind and heart, which are very essential and inescapable for attaining
spiritual wisdom. Skill in learning and understanding the Scriptures need
a guidance from a knowledgeable person. Conduct and behavior are
yet another important yardstick in general. Because it involves action/
activity or movement in the divine society, which forms one's lifestyle.
Nevertheless, deeds of a person plays a vital role. In turn, it speaks
about an individual's act in a Satsang. Thus, possessing of spiritual
or divine wisdom could be easily noticed from the lifestyle of a person
from his/her acts or deeds as the lifestyle is the evidence of true
spiritual wisdom.

M. S. Subbulakshmi Amma "I am a devotee of Bhagawan."

" I have visited so many universities and educational centres and charitable institutions. Wherever I go the trustees ask me to give a musical concert to raise funds; and in this way so many institutions have been built. But I went to Prashanti Nilayam where instead of asking me to perform, Bhagawan Sathya Sai Baba gave me a diamond necklace and it is my experience that HE never accepts anything." ~ M.S. Amma.

Swami invariably showed much love to M.S. Amma One year during Ladies Day, Swami asked her to speak. She said, “Swami I do not know how to speak. I could sing, but now, even that I am not able to do. How can I speak Swami?” But Swami would not take no for an answer. HE went down to where she was sitting, and helped her to walk up a few steps to the porch in Sai Kulwant Hall and took her to the podium. M.S. then said, “Swami, as I just said, I do not know how to make speeches. But if they ask me are YOU father, I will say YOU certainly are father. If they ask me are YOU mother, I will assert that YOU are indeed mother.” And in this manner she spoke just a few sentences, straight from the Heart.

Later a few other ladies made speeches. That evening, when Swami was going round and giving Darshan in Poornachandra Hall before a cultural programme, HE told a group of ladies, “Today, so many people made speeches, but the speech of M.S. alone stood out. It came from the heart; all the others were artificial!” That says everything, does it not? :

Om Sathya Sai -Sadhana Sargam (From the Form to the Formless) - YouTube

Message of the Lord:
My Dear Devotees

When you look at Me what do you see? Only a body, or also a Presence?
I am a Presence, an Omnipresence, and so are you.
When you speak to Me, feel you are speaking to the Atma, and not just a body form called Sathya Sai Baba. I am not that. This is where many of you get stuck. You do not move away from the form to the formless. You may address Me as Sai Baba, but see Me as formless. Then you will be able to see your Self as formless. You know the body is mostly space. That space is formless consciousness. There is no such thing as empty space. It has consciousness in it.

As you purify your mind and consciousness more and more, the awareness will expand, that you are omnipresent consciousness, awareness. Purification is essential to know yourself as formless. Dis-identify yourself from everything that is not Atma. Say, "I am not this; I am not this; I am Atma." I bless you that you succeed on this, your chosen path to God realization.
-Sathya Sai Baba

Most agriculturists feed on hope for their survival. Hope sustains them while they plough, sow, plant and manure the crops that they raise. That hope, must become a mental habit not just during agriculture, but as part of everyone’s daily life, in all the manifold activities. Never give any chance for that vile thing, despair, to eat into the vitals of activity and effort. Despair is a sin against God. When He is within you, why do you lose hope? That is why the Lord says, “Why fear, when I am here?” Be always joyful, optimistic and courageous. Know that the strongest connection between you and the Divine is when the life-giving waters of courage and hope, flow in your heart.

As we all know, when a person is in trouble or problems, one does the job with care
in order to get a fruitful result. In the process, if a person is required to meet someone,
he/she does it with a smile in place of an argument or murmur/whispering about his/her problems,
and with mild attitude. That helps to calm down his soul and soothe his/her feelings.
Further, one sees the example of motherhood, who possesses certain attributes like,
power to bear any problems/troubles, ability to rear and gift of love without looking for
anything in return. Human being is the creation of the Supreme Power with a meaning
to be found in one's life such as dependence and smooth maintenance of relationship
with everyone including the Supreme Power. If one exercises authority with anyone,
the relationship gets spoiled. Similarly, dependence and obedience in worship too
is absolutely essential. As we confess to the elders when one commits a mistake
and repents later for the mistake, there is no harm in submitting the mistakes done
to the Supreme Power too so as to get a mental relief and calmness. One has to
be truthful and trustworthy always in life so as to get the blessings of the Supreme Power.
If need be, one can get the guidelines from our scriptures which suggests practical guidelines.
One can learn from the interpretation of experience from the elders too via Pravachanams.
One has to keep the mind cool always, which is considered good or enjoyable for a divine
activity. A commitment to our scriptures and guidelines in Vedas are absolutely essential
with total absolute trust so as to keep our hearts and mind open always to enable the
Supreme Power to illumine in us by throwing out the ignorance.

How to destroy the mind? It is easy once you know what it is. The mind is stuffed with desire, similar to a football filled with air. Puncture it and it will not move from place to place. In a square field filled with water from an irrigation canal, water appears in the form of a square. If the field is circular or triangular, then the sheet of water will match the geometric shape. The mind too takes on the form of one’s desires. Take another example - the mind is like a piece of cloth, the warp and woof being the yarn of desire. The texture, the colour, the durability, the feel, and the shine of the cloth will depend upon the desire that constitutes the warp and the woof. Remove the yarn strand by strand, and the cloth automatically disappears. This is the technique of destroying the mind (Mano Nasanam). A wise person will wipe out all traces of the mind.

If a person desires to have a rigorous mind training towards spiritual path,
primarily one has to have a temperament of genuine interest in self-improvement
and gaining insights into the spiritual activities. Sometimes, negative experiences
one faces in life, if viewed with the right attitude one can understand the
reason for it through self-awareness and self-identity. One can, through
concentration on meditation and yoga exercises on sense and mind control,
find answers to some of the questions. One has to evaluate the mind and
the heart by staying alone and the reason for not having interest in spiritual
activities or deeds. Further, why one is averse towards spiritual activities?
Such people have to be guided in a way that would not hurt their feelings and
take them to a Satsang where spiritual activities are being conducted regularly.
If that person visits two or three times, one would get interest generated
in his/her mind and such people would automatically attend the sessions on
their own without any guidance. In the process one acquires virtuous attributes
and values of a member of a Satsang. Besides one gets impressed in the
Satsang activities. On seeing others having devotional practices besides
the continuous devotional connection with the right people would produce
undeterred interest in the course of time.

As long as the consciousness element is reformed, the body-mind
combination may not be able to realize the concept of "self". One
has to remove the "maya" from one's mind so as to understand the
true mental status. Our Upanishads have lot of examples towards
this end, and if by reading continuously, one can attain the results
of techniques towards destroying the impure qualities in the mind.

The greatest instrument by which success can be ensured for all your efforts is devotion. That will grant you health, wealth and prosperity too. It will also eliminate hatred and faction, and give more strength to you. A person with devotion will do every act as worship of the Lord, and so the act will be done effectively without any malingering or insincerity. It will also win the Grace of the Lord, so the devotee will be able to do more and enjoy greater health and mental happiness. If every one of you unite and sing the glory of the Lord, it will produce greater harmony and social cohesion than thousand people clamoring and shouting one against the other. Divine Love will flood the area and fertilize all your efforts if all of you sing the Lord’s name together in unison. Do it for some time and you will yourself bear witness to the loving and serene atmosphere.

Normally, a person should not allow hatred feelings in one's heart against
anyone including his/her enemy. To err is human. Anyone can commit a
mistake. Hence, one should have a broad mind to forgive him and if he
does that, sometimes even the offender too may regret his/her wrong
actions. One should share his/her feelings with others, in times of trouble.
One should develop unconditional love and compassion for others. Sometimes
even extending a small help to a needy person may bring lot of changes
in one's life and one has to talk to a person who is having problems
face to face. Sometimes, there may be some criticisms. But that should
not be widened or exaggerated and given much importance to that while
one has to ignore that by keeping away for a little time. In fact, I enjoy
my time daily by hearing devotional songs or music every morning
before I begin my day's work. I must thank my Guru for this. I hear you
Baba through Radio daily and attend your Satsang Bhajans on all Thursdays
besides attending Pravachanams, whereever takes place. What a blessing
you have given me. Aneka Koti Pranams to you.

You say that you have been reading the various Sai books, but do not understand what Sadhana is, or what to do in Sadhana.
Swami tells us that Sadhana is the process of getting what we want, and it has three aspects. First, there is "vritti", which means attraction to that which we want. Without this longing for what we want, Sadhana cannot get under way. But this "vritti" is not enough. The second factor of Sadhana is confidence in oneself. We need self confidence, that we have the ability to get what we want. However, longing for that which we want and confidence that we have the strength and talent to get it is still not enough. The third factor is action. Without action nothing happens. We have to actually gain what we want and make it ours.
Baba tells us that this triple Sadhana is as effective for worldly ends as for spiritual life. In other words, that which is the object of your longing and your action, you will get if you are brave and have strong confidence in yourself.
The awesome power implicit in this triple Sadhana is a secret, unknown to the general public but revealed to devotees who study Lord Sathya Sai Baba. Triple Sadhana is a Divine guarantee, so to speak, that by the intense application of Sadhana to your life, you will get what you want. This being so, it is of the greatest importance to discriminate between your many desires before you engage in the Sadhana that will get what you want.
What is worth wanting? What is worthy of Sadhana? Surely it is only that which will truly and fully satisfy your desire.
What is desire? Desire is God, expressed as a vital force of your life. Who are you? You are the highest; in your inner most being your potential is Divine. Will the low satisfy the highest? No! No value that is lesser than the Divine will truly and fully satisfy, desire. Only God is worth wanting. Only the Highest is worthy to be the object of Sadhana. No beauty short of Him, no treasure short of Him, no power short of His; nothing that is lesser than He, will totally and finally satisfy and bring to an end the torment of unrequited desire. Lord Sathya Sai is the eternal Beloved in each person's heart, and desire will not be fulfilled so long as there is separation between the Beloved and oneself.
You are a Sai devotee, and thus you already have in your daily life the first two aspects of Sadhana. That is, you have sacred love for Him and are mightily attracted to Him. And your spiritual search is the evidence that you have the strength and confidence to do Sadhana. What you are puzzled about is the action aspect of Sadhana.
Why are you puzzled even while studying the Sai books? If I may venture to guess, there are too many impressions coming all at once about what to do: Mentioned in the books are a number of different activities and each one is called "Sadhana". In this context Swami has given us a very important principle which merits your best attention.
Swami points out that a box may contain a hundred or more matches, each one of which is potential fire. But He asks us to consider that only one small feeble match is needed to start a huge forest fire that consumes everything in its path; even green and wet wood is burnt to ashes. There is no need to strike a hundred matches to start a big fire. A skilful and careful striking of one match will start a fire.
By this example Swami is telling us to do one Sadhana action and do it with the whole heart and mind. And, that is enough; the rest will inevitably follow.
For your Sadhana action, why not take the action of which Swami speaks most often. In this context He declares that sacred love is the Royal Highway td God. You already love and long for Sathya Sai; what is the action that corresponds to that sacred love? Well, by virtue of His Divine Grace, Swami even tells us this.
He Whom we love, we wish to behold and be with, all the time. So all the time have Lord Sathya Sai, the Beloved, as your Guide, Protector, Constant Companion ever loving and affectionate, despite your human faults, call upon Him to bestow His Grace and be with you always. He assures us that He hears and ever responds if you repeat His Name with sacred love and visualize His Form in your mind.
This is the action to complete Sai Sadhana, the repetition of the Sai Name with love and reverence, "Sai Ram, Sai Ram, Sai Ram,” and the visualization of the Sai Form—this Sadhana action from the working hour to the sleeping hour. When duty calls during the day and you must concentrate on your work, then in your mind address the Lord and tell Him that you are dedicating every moment of the work to His glory—then go ahead with full confidence and do your work. Swami says that dedication of your work and the result of your work to Him is tantamount to the repetition of His Name, and in this way the Name continues in mind and heart from the working hour to the sleeping hour.

A mother holds a child that has soiled its shirt and puts on it a new one. Death is the removal of the soiled shirt and putting on the fresh one. Let the Mother do Her will, be a willing child in Her hands. Have full faith in Her love and wisdom. Be an instrument; submerge your will in the Will of the Lord. That will save you from worry and pain. Do not lose your mind, seeing people who have gone astray. It will be like seeing a stagnant pool and then judging rainwater to be dirty. Rain water is pure; it is the soil that soils it. Also be careful not to decry anyone. It amounts to decrying God. Be aware of the God within you and the God in everyone else. If you do this, there is nothing to equal the joy and peace that you will be rewarded with. I bless you, so that you may attain that bliss.

Normally, the quantum or degree of love towards mother and
other relatives/friends vary. While mother's love is unconditional, it
is entirely different with others. Because, it is purely based
on feelings and emotions, which is likely to change from one
moment to the next. Intense affection is the real factor to
be assessed. As mentioned herein, parents love for their
children is as close to unconditional love, one should have love
towards God too on a similar platform. As we continue to love
our children through good and bad times, we are not to stop
loving the Supreme Power too without any expectations from
HIM. Sometimes, when children make mistakes, parents may get angry
at that point of time and may act as unlovable outwardly, but then
it is only a temporary phase. But it does not stop at that. Therefore,
whether the Supreme Power meets our demands or not, our affection
or love towards HIM should not have any parameters and it should be
absolutely unconditional.

To realize the truth of an Advent (Avatar), the aspirant must culture the mind as the farmer prepares the field. The farmer clears thorny undergrowth, wild creepers and tenuous roots from the field. Then, he ploughs the land, waters it and the seeds are sown. The seedlings and tender plants are then guarded from pests. To prevent destructions by goats and cattle, he erects a fence. So too, the aspirant must remove egoism, pride and greed from the heart. Truth, Repetition of the Lord’s Name and Meditation refer to ploughing and levelling. Love is the water that must flow into the field of your heart to make it fertile, soft and rich. Lord’s Name is the seed and devotion is the sprout. Protect the seeds from the cattle of Kama and Krodha (desire and anger) with the fence of discipline. Then you will reap bliss as the harvest.

One should understand the objectives and necessity for extending
a service to a divine society or a Satsang. If a person is inspired
or attracted by the nature of service being rendered by others in
a Satsang, automatically one would get a feeling or emotion that
he/she should also do such work with service oriented views extending
love and kindness towards everyone. If a person is a Doctor, he/she
can do medical service to patients through his/her clinic on the lines
similar to Baba's desires. There may be some stalwarts in spiritual
practices and teachings. Such people can do some service to extend
spiritual activities by teaching spiritual acts or deeds to enable the
devotees to learn and seek Baba's blessings. Social, cultural and spiritual
upliftment is essential these days and one has to extend service
to all Satsang fraternity without any differentiation amongst the members
of the Satsang. Some can do or extend service through imparting
guidance to learn spiritual books besides inspiring ideals of love and
sacrifice to the needy in the Community. Service to the humanity
is Service to the Supreme Power.
