The most important requisite for people in the world is truth based on noble thoughts. True thoughts constitute the real, proper wealth. The absence of good thoughts weakens the will power. With a weak will, one can not accomplish even simple things. To achieve anything worthwhile in life you must strengthen your willpower. Your bad or good fortune is related directly to your thoughts. Sowing the seed of thoughts you reap the fruit known as Karma (deeds). Sowing the seed of Karma, you then reap the fruit called practice (Abhyaasa). From Abhyaasa, you reap the fruit of character (Sheela). From Sheela you reap the fruit of good fortune (Adrushtam). Thus fortune is based on character, which is based on good practices arising out of good deeds based on good thoughts. Thus with the development of good thoughts, one's good fortune will also grow.

- Divine Discourse, Dec 25, 1994

Normally, one can notice that elders used to advice the children
about deciding the destiny one reaches the age of 14 and above.
This is with regard to life span and growth in the career. Whereas
decision about usefully spending the life is also an event that one has
to think of as a parallel process. If a person has good thoughts
which results subsequently into good deeds or actions in life. Sometimes
the same become habits of a person too. Thus one has to decide
moulding of a character at a certain age, which ultimately becomes
one's destiny. We may notice different things in life. One may
form the character by looking at the visuals that may come across
in one's life. Some run a race in the life not expecting the outcome
of it. But then one can notice a difference between facing the facts
in a particular situation while one attempts to maintain a positive
outlook keeping or setting aside the negative thoughts. But then
one should not loose the heart and try to believe that the door
is not shut for him and there will be another door which would be
open if he/she starts believing the Supreme Power and dedicate his/her
entire strength on HIM.

The Supreme Power is known as Divine Image and the Supreme Power's
functional aspects viz. showering blessings, extension of HIS grace, etc
are known as Divine Character. He could be termed in any form one likes
to call HIM as omnipotence, omnipresence, etc. The Supreme Power
creates a person as the object of His love so as to extend the happiness to
the person or the devotee. Religious and philosophical discussions about
the Supreme Power are usually termed as an established reality. A painter
like Ravi Verma creates a painting by explicitly exhibiting the concepts of Lord
as envisioned in his mind so as to pave the way to the devotees to think of the
Lord as per our Puranas. First of all, every person has an impulse to have
happiness. Just like a child has a desire to play with toys, every person
has to have an impulse to seek the spiritual joy in one's life. If that impulse
is not satisfied, the child immediately becomes angry or weeps. Whereas
in the case of spiritual joy, one has to exhibit true love towards the Supreme
Power. One has to have creative ability to attain the bliss of the Supreme
Power without any self-centered reason. The proper way for a person is
to live a divine based deeds and not demand based divine acts.

People worship God with devotion and sincerity, but God is not satisfied with external worship. You should serve society. Only service can confer bliss on you. By rendering service to society, you can alleviate the sufferings of the people, and also bring about transformation in their lives. Yad Bhavam Tad Bhavathi (as is the feeling, so is the result). When you serve with sacred feelings, it is bound to yield sacred results. Serve society to your utmost capacity. The satisfaction that you get by participating in bhajans is temporary, whereas service confers permanent satisfaction. Time is the most precious gift of God, but you are wasting it in vain pursuits and unsacred feelings. Sanctify the time given to you by serving society. Through service alone you can get rid of worries, ego, pomp and show, and other evil qualities.

- Divine Discourse, Aug 22, 2000.

Divine Grace is nothing but sharing the divine acts or deeds.
No one can be happy without the divine grace. It is normally
said that the eyes are our windows to our soul. If one could
see the Supreme Power it will be a great occasion in one's life.
If that happens, one can easily see the difference. For example,
if a person has a good darshan of the Supreme Power, one will
be elevated with joy by the divine grace. It strengthens the
will power of a person to do good deeds in one's life. Further
it enlightens the mind of a person enabling him/her to keep away
from bad things. Above all, it inspires a person. In other words
the person makes an attempt to pray, worship, do Namasmaran
etc daily to be closer always to the Supreme Power. It also
enables a person to resist from evil acts and do good to the
Society owing to the enlightenment of the mind.

Silence is the only language of the realized. Practice moderation in speech. That will help you in many ways. It will develop love, for most misunderstandings and factions arise out of carelessly spoken words. When the foot slips, the wound can be healed; but when the tongue slips, the wound it causes in the heart of another will fester for life. The tongue is liable for four big errors: uttering falsehood, scandalizing, finding fault with others, and excessive articulation. These have to be avoided if there is to be peace for the individual as well as for society. The bond between one another will be strengthened if people speak less and sweetly. That is why silence was prescribed as a vow for spiritual aspirants by the scriptures. You are all spiritual aspirants at various stages of the road, and so this discipline is valuable for you.

- Divine Discourse, Jul 22, 1958.

Normally silence protects a person particularly when one desires to
attain the divine bliss. There is a saying that the Supreme Power
prefers the silent place to reveal himself to a mankind. The shadow
one notices in life is similar to the same quality as that of the cloud
that envelops the sun. There are famous quotes like God is the friend
of silence from Mother Teresa and Silence is a great source of strength
besides harsh words can hurt one's feelings but silence opens one's
heart. Our Upanishads too mention about the quietness and the
significance of silence. Profound silence brings peace of mind.
Silence brings immense power to a person. One can find the reality
and essence of life through silent prayers. It also removes the ignorance
from our consciousness through silent meditation. One can notice
that in those days the Sadhus adopted silence (maunam or tapas)
strictly and attained holiness. Because of silence one does not get
affected from imagination or motivation and other various functions
of the mind. In fact one should take or adopt a pledge to observe
physical and mental silence for a few minutes in a day.

All that you find outside is nothing but the reflection, reaction, and resound of your inner feelings. Life must be lived in the proper way by exercising control over the ten senses. Speak sweetly and softly. You cannot always oblige, but you can always speak obligingly. Pray for the well-being of all. Sanctify your senses by serving all. By exercising control over your senses, you can achieve anything in life. You may think that you have given away ten bags of rice in charity and distributed clothes to 500 people. Such accounts are to be submitted to the income tax department and not to God. God is not interested in quantity; He sees the feeling behind your acts. So, whatever acts of charity you undertake, do it with the spirit of love and sacrifice.

SAIRAM

Wish you happy and peaceful New Year. What is the happiest day in your life? All are happy days to a person of true knowledge.
Happiness is an internal conscious experience which comes as an effect of the extinction of mental or physical desire. The lesser the desire, the greater is the happiness. So perfect happiness consists in the destruction or satisfaction of all desires in the absolute being.
Life is an experience meant to train the individual for a higher, deeper and expanded state of existence through the experience of the results of action. The aim of everybody's life is the attainment of complete perfection in the Spiritual Absolute.
Prema is not an illusion. It is a reality and actuality for those who have realised oneness in life.
What is man's dearest possession apart from his life? One's dearest possession is one's own true Self and there is no permanently dear thing apart from that.
God is great, all others are mere dust. God only is real and great. Everything else is unreal and valueless. I go further to say that God only exists and there is nothing second to Sai (God).

With Blessings,
Baba

God does not expect you to perform rituals nor does He want you to study the scriptures. All that He desires from you is eight types of ‘flowers’. God will be pleased with you and confer boons on you only when you offer Him these ‘flowers’ which are dear to Him. No benefit accrues from offering the flowers, which fade away and decay. Offer Him the eight flowers of nonviolence, control of senses, compassion, forbearance, peace, penance, meditation and Truth (ahimsa, indriya nigraha, daya, kshama, shanti, tapas, dhyana and sathya). Your life will find fulfillment when you please God by offering Him these ‘flowers’. Love is the undercurrent of all this. So lead a life suffused with love.

- Divine Discourse, Aug 22, 2000.

At the outset, Wish everyone a Happy New Year.

If one meditates regularly with involvement, one can get an awakening
in life and can derive divine consciousness. Meditation keeps away
restless unnecessary thoughts. It paves way for spiritual progress.
One's target has to be to generate good behavior and divine prone
acts or deeds which in turn will certainly enable one to align with the
divine deeds. This will further develop in mind divine qualities,
trust in the Supreme Power besides an endurance in knowing the
accomplishment of divine deeds regularly.

Your life is a long journey. You should have fewer luggage (desires) in this long journey of life. Therefore it is said, “Less luggage, more comfort, makes travel a pleasure.” So ceiling on desires is what you have to adopt today. You have to cut short your desires day by day. You are under the mistaken notion that happiness lies in the fulfillment of desires. But in fact, happiness begins to dawn when desires are totally eradicated. When you reduce your desires, you advance towards the state of renunciation. You have many desires; what do you get out of them? You are bound to face the consequences when you claim something as yours. You will be blissful the moment you give up ego and attachment.

Everyone has ego which may not be outwardly noticed. Though
it may be initially difficult, it is better to overcome from it slowly.
One cannot get enlightenment instantly without eliminating the
desires towards acquiring material assets and passions in life. One
has to be firm in mind towards removal of both selfishness and
unreasonable desires in material objects. Formation of right behavior,
livelihood, dis-harmful speech, etc. can bring good thoughts and
deeds in life. No doubt, certain desires are insatiable and it may
become endless at times. So, one has to have resolution in life to
keep away from it. One has to find out correct methods towards
religious activities and prepare the mind in devotional activities or
deeds. Everyone knows in life that why prayers or worship is
obligatory or mandatory. It is of utmost important that one has
to realize that performance of prayer would safeguard or protect one
from ill effects in life analyzing the good and bad deeds. HIS grace
and blessings are essential to everyone. The more one worships with
dedication and involvement, the more it will be desirable and praiseworthy
for his/her soul.

Your speech should always be good. Never utter harsh words. Speak softly and sweetly. That is why I tell you often, “You cannot always oblige, but you can always speak obligingly.” Say what you have to say without harshness. Speak softly so that only the person for whom your words are intended may hear you. Such soft and sweet speech should be developed. Good vision, good listening, and good speech lead to good thoughts. “As are your thoughts, so is the result.” Right thoughts lead to right action. Without good thoughts, it is not possible to perform good actions. Good thoughts cannot be acquired by reading scriptures or by listening to the teachings of the preceptor. Through self-effort you should put your senses of sound, touch, form, taste, and smell to right use. Your self-effort alone can ensure proper spiritual practice.

- Divine Discourse, Apr 28, 1999.

One has to make every effort towards enhancement of faith/goodness,
knowledge enhancement, self-control, perseverance in divine efforts,
godliness, brotherly kindness and love, etc towards others. If one
possesses these qualities, the results will be effective and productive.
Learning to lead a spiritual life is not that easy. Some people take less
time to learn spiritual deeds, while others do it slowly, but however
steadily owing to social involvement in Satsang and work along with
others towards promoting the spiritual cause. Because, this is not
a one-time or one day activity. Once a person practices spiritual
deeds, it will stay in the memories of all its participants and will be
one of the most meaningful memories of the life. Further, pure
thoughts are evenly spread amongst the devotees. One can
attain peace of mind if one achieves success in spiritual activities.
One has to recognize good virtues and also learn good virtues from
others. Only in Satsang one can can learn how to love others.
Because, there is an opportunity to learn from others. Only when
we involve ourselves in spiritual activities, we will understand more
in life. If one is not able to control the mind, one has to put in more
effort into spiritual practice and concentrate more on the path of
religious activities.
