The four components in the “Ceiling on Desires” programme are: Curb on excessive talk, curb on excessive desires and expenditure, control of consumption of food, and check on waste of energy. You need some essential commodities for sustenance, and you should not aspire for more. Only if air is available in sufficient quantity will it be comfortable. If it is excessive and there is a gale, you will feel uncomfortable. When you are thirsty, you can consume only a limited quantity of water needed for the sustenance of the body; you can’t drink the entire water of the River Ganga. Your eyes automatically close when they happen to see a flash of lightning because they can’t withstand such high illumination. Therefore there must be a limit to everything, including desires.

- Divine Discourse, Jan 19, 1983.

A motivational pravachanam can light a fire in the minds of devotees
and can enlighten their attitudes, inspire devotional activities and
and stop behavior which are not in the right direction. Every devotee
has to attend prvachanam, choose a right friend, gather useful information
and select those who are committed in devotional activities. Unless one
taps into the right place with a strong belief in the Supreme Power
in an individual capacity to overcome obstacles in life and rise above the
trivial circumstances one may not be able to attain the divine bliss.
One should not be afraid to show the passion for extending help.
One can try to resolve problems, if any, and try to alleviate their pain
by assisting them in the best way viz. taking them to temples or pravachanams
and enable them to manage or overcome their sorrow or problem.

SAIRAM

From the moment of birth, suffering pursues man in one form or another throughout life. If in all these ordeals, one has to maintain equanimity and peace, he has to lead a righteous life, with firm faith in God. There is no need to give up the normal duties of a student or a householder. But everything that is done should be done as an offering to God. Thereby, every ordinary act becomes sanctified. Love of God should express itself in the form of consecration of every action.

If you happen to see a wicked person, do not immediately think of that person as being bad. The bad actions of that person are due to the body, but within that person is the same Atma that is also in you. This unity, this Atmic Principle, is what you must focus on. Deal with this other person with the feeling that the Self in you is also present in the other. This is the way to develop love for all beings. Also do not bear ill will towards any country but be alike to all. Do not criticise the culture of other countries. Love your culture as your mother, just as people of other lands love their respective cultures. If you live like this, you will, without question, become an ideal person. You must spiritualise your attitude, tendencies, and mind.

- Divine Discourse, May 30, 2000.

When a person worships the Supreme Power with flowers wholeheartedly
HE will certainly shower HIS grace on the devotee. Our Scriptures have
clearly explained the procedure of Pujas with flowers explicitly. One has
to develop divine concentration in life. There is a specific instruction in
our scriptures about using the flowers, particularly, the type of flowers
one has to offer at the time of worship. The flowers, that are offered
brings the devotees a special blessings. The soft-petalled flowers that
are offered in worship have its own significance. For example, red cloured
flowers are generally offered to female deities viz. Durga, Kali, etc.
When one offers the flowers, one has to chant relevant slokas. In Kerala
it is known as Pushpanjali. Definition given by them for Pushpanjali, is
Puja is Pu stands for Pushpam and Ja stands for Japa or chanting the
mantras of God or Goddess. Besides Ja also stands for Jalam or Water
which is also offered during Worship with the Mantras; which is otherwise
known as aachamanam. Flowers are the creation of God, i.e. nature or
in sanskrit prakriti. The words prakriti denotes all the Gunas i.e. Pra for
Sattva Guna, kri for Rajo Guna and ti denotes for tamo Guna.
Our Vedams mention about Shodashopachaara puja,
Panchopachara puja, and Ekopachara puja, etc.

The flower of forbearance (kshama) is very dear to the Lord. The Pandavas suffered a lot at the hands of the Kauravas. But it was the virtue of forbearance that protected the Pandavas and made them an ideal to the rest of the world. The other flower that we must offer to God is Shanti (peace). One should remain peaceful through all the vicissitudes of life. Only then can one attain divine grace. Peace is needed at the physical, mental and spiritual levels. Peace is not external, it is present within. You are the embodiment of peace. In the worldly life, there are bound to be many hardships, but one should not be perturbed. One should bear all sufferings with fortitude and patience. Human life is given not merely to enjoy the worldly pleasures. Life becomes meaningful only when one experiences the peace that originates from the heart.

- Divine Discourse, Aug 22, 2000

One has to find out the ways and means by joining a Satsang and
work out the strategies for a life long satsang activities in order to
uplift the mind and share the cheer of godly feelings. Sometimes, one may
feel that in spite of sincerity and faithfulness, one is constrained to
suffer in life. That is why, such people do not immediately accept
the Supreme Power's blessings and look frantically for some solutions
in life. One can easily understand as to what would happen that, when
a person is suffering from problems and troubles, he/she will not
accept the truth and try to slip from the path of sincerity and
faithfullness in the daily worship. The Supreme Power certainly
answers such people and HE shows positive events to them. Why not,
sometimes, the Supreme Power blesses some people in the midst of
extreme difficulty by giving them necessary inner strength to bear the
problem with an insight in understanding HIM and to acquire greater
spiritual maturity. Obedience in life always brings blessings in any field.

The tongue is the armour of the heart, it even guards your life. Loud talks, long talk, wild talk, talk full of anger and hate – all these affect your health. They breed anger and hatred in others; they wound, they excite, they enrage, and they estrange. Why is silence said to be golden? The silent person has no enemies, though he or she may not have friends. They have the leisure and the chance to dive within them and examine their own faults and failings. They no more have inclination to seek them in others. If your foot slips, you suffer a fracture; if your tongue slips, you fracture someone’s faith or joy. That fracture can never be set right; that wound will fester forever. Therefore use the tongue with great care. The softer you talk, the less you talk, the more sweetly you talk, the better for you and the world.

- Divine Discourse, Mar 29, 1965.

Hearing the Bhajans in a Satsang is not enough. If one makes the
effort to sing along with them and also sing individually when time
or opportunities comes up, the effort would not go in vain. In Bhajans
you can hear the Supreme Power's feelings. Every mankind who lives
in this Universe, faces the problems. If one is determined to seek
the blessings of the Supreme Power, he/she did not have to worry
about the passing phase that occurs in life. Hope and faith are
interlinked. Normally a person has a hope about the future.
Hope also has certain potential and faith knows the reality of the
future. Hope is nothing but an expectation of future events, while
faith has certain knowledge of future occurrences. Hope has to
be accompanied by positive events. Faith brings a hope that
a positive event will occur. Thus, one must have faith in the Supreme
Power with a hope that HE will certainly bless us.

Dear Bala sir,

As far as I know Sathya Sai Baba always wanted everyone to go beyond image worship and try to see God in everything and everyone. He had never asked anyone to worship any picture as far as I know.

SAIRAM BALA

I never said that Sri Sri is to be worshiped ; I sought a clarification from you since some Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's Followers were telling that BABA Himself has directed SAI DEVOTEES to sing Bhajans in their Sat Sangh where Sri Sri Picture is kept; This is not acceptable to me and i had sent you a Private Message about any such instruction>

Can you reproduce my private my first message here please as i have deleted mine.

Since there was no such instruction either from Puttaparuthi or from Sundaram, Chennai, I think this is probably circulated by SRI SRI Followers to enlist Sai Devotees in their Sat Sangh.

You also replied to me that you will go to Sundaram, Chennai and find more about it as you are not aware of any such instruction

This is what you stated:

As far as your query is concerned, I do not have any idea.
During month end, I shall be visiting Sundaram
as a matter of routine and to renew the monthly magazine. I shall find out if there is any such information about which you have mentioned.

Since ancient times, emphasis has been laid on three aspects: work, worship, and wisdom. What is wisdom? All that is related to our senses - the fleeting objects of the material world and our actions, speak of our ignorance. Wisdom dawns the moment the mind is withdrawn. The thoughtless state between two consecutive thoughts is Spiritual Wisdom (Brahma Jnana). People are not able to experience this thoughtless state and are carried away by fleeting, ephemeral, and momentary things. All the knowledge that one acquires is not true knowledge. Knowledge of the Spirit (Atma) is true knowledge. True wisdom dawns when all thoughts are decimated. However all three of these - work, worship, and wisdom, begin with service. No matter what service it is, if it is done with love and divine feelings, it becomes upasana (worship).

Dear PJ Sir and Bala Sir,

I think there is just a minor confusion here..that some Sri Sri Ravishankar devotees are claiming that Baba had asked Sai Devotees to sing Bhajans in front of a pic of Sri Sri Ravishankar.

Actually its no big deal for anyone to pray to which picture or anything. Isnt God in all forms?

I have read books of Sri Sri Ravishankar too..anyone whom we can gain knowledge from is a Guru..that way in life all of us would have had multiple and countless Gurus that taught us stuff.

We should not divide and rule when it comes to prayers..anyone who preaches word of God is indeed worthy of respect as a Guru..no where it says that Guru has to be one person.
God Himself manifest in all Gurus of the world hence Gurur Brahma Gurur Vishnu Gurur Devo Maheshwara.

So just read all teachings from no matter whom with any open mind without getting too attached to anyone to call him My Guru or Your Guru..I think Sathya Sai Baba had been clear on the fact that this mine and thine feeling has to go.

Its not too hard isnt it?

You also misunderstood my point

No doubt Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is a Spiritual Guru, but i wanted to know Whether BABA Hiself has directed Sai Devotees to Sri Sri Ravi shankar's Sat Sangh at any time..

Siging before any Guru is not the point here.

Dear PJ sir,

As far as I know Baba does not ask us to get involved in anything that binds us in anyway.

We know for a fact that Baba is not into us followers even worshiping His image. He very much expects us to follow the Tenets of Advaita as much as we can.

As I said earlier its no big deal for anything when at the end of the day none of us even know anything about God.

BTW sir many people claim lots of things and we do not need to proof or disproof them.

We have no idea about the strange way God works.

So the best is to put our mind to rest.

Our ancestors used to say that whenever we begin our work in a day,
one should think of the Supreme Power and start the work without fail;
and that would make a great difference in life. Opportunity knocks
the door of a person only once in life and that should be utilised
properly without wasting it. We all need accountability in life to
become a good citizen; similarly we are also accountable to the
Supreme Power to be a good devotee. Prayer is a powerful method
and it changes the conditions of a person's life. Prayers guide a person
to obtain the necessary wisdom to have a right direction and strengthen
one's will power for regular worship.

Divinity is the manifestation of Prema and Kshama. The virtue of Kshama (forbearance, unlimited patience and ability to forgive and forget) is not achieved by reading books or learnt from an instructor. Nor can it be received as a gift from someone. This prime virtue, can be acquired solely by self effort, by facing squarely diverse problems, difficulties of various sorts, anxieties, suffering as well as sorrow. In the absence of Kshama, you will become susceptible to all kinds of evil tendencies. Hatred and jealousy easily take root in a person lacking this virtue. Kshama gives complete protection to the one who possesses it. Hence Kshama, a priceless possession, is the greatest, grandest and the noblest amongst all virtues. Kshama is all encompassing.

- Divine Discourse, May 25, 2000.

Forbearance is the chief virtue in a person which has to be preserved.
Sometimes, anxiety can turn into forbearance by projection of a need.
People having less self-confidence sometimes tend to hot temper.
Spiritual discipline alone can assist in overcoming the shortcomings in
life. One should not yield to the pressure in life. Difficulties and troubles
often turn the character of persons. One has to develop endurance
in life gradually. A man of strong will-power find less difficulties in practicing
the virtues of patience, ability to forgive and forget.
