You must probe into the real significance of samkeerthan(or Bhajan singing) that you are engaged in. Keerthan is ‘singing aloud the Glory of God.’ Samkeerthan is the process of singing that originates in the heart, not from the lips or tongue. It is the expression of the joyous thrill that wells up from the heart when the Glory of God is remembered. It is the spontaneous manifestation of inner ecstasy, no attention is paid to the blame or praise that others may give. It does not seek the admiration or the appreciation of the listeners. It is sung for one's own joy, satisfaction and delight. Keerthan of this supreme type, alone, deserves the name samkeerthan. It is with this high purpose in view that this programme of globalsamkeerthan was designed. Singing this intense yearning for God and enjoying the experience of adoring Him, helps to purify the atmosphere. We have seen in the yester years in our puranas, ithihasas, etc. Saints, Vedic scholars,
etc are to deliver religious Discourses or Pravachanam, Nama Sangeerthanam, etc. in the
praise of the God as a form of devotion in order to inculcate the habit of God worshiping
and also create a feeling bhakthi in everyone. Continuous chanting of God's nama, some
call it as Akhanda Nama Japam with a view to spread the spiritual message activities
amongst the people in the Hindu community. Now a days Vittal Maharaj does continuously
Nama-Sangeerthanam in all places emphasizing the importance of God's vibrations and
presence in everyone's heart. While some study Vedas, Upanishads, or spiritual lessons or
practices, all our Hindu Mahapurshas have emphasized during many decades the importance
of Bhajans and Nama Sangeerthanams. All human beings are alike and there is no difference
amongst us and it is for the person to serve the God and chant HIS Nama to the extent
possible complete devotion so as to follow the path of spirituality and also educate the
like minded people to perform poojas at home emphasizing its significance. Nama Sangeerthanam
has its own tremendous power if it is regularly practiced. It can be done by anyone irrespective
of Caste, Creed etc. In fact one can chant the Mahamanthram Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama
Hare hare Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna hare Hare every day for around 108 times or
so. During the month of Margazhi, in villages those days, devotees used to go through every
street doing bhajans and the chiefs holding a Tampura and Tabela leading the team. The chanting
of the same will be repeated by others who are accompanying them. It is generally said that
beauty of a person lies in the beauty of his mind and not of his body or appearance. Agathin
Azaghu Mugathil therium. If a person does regularly Bhajan and Nama Sangeerthanam not only
his/her mind will get purified but also structure of the person will get refreshed and reformed
and may get a new look.

The genuine need of a person is to eliminate ignorance through spiritual practices until
he/she gains the spirit of wisdom. One of the best methods is to overcome the ignorance
through wise management and controlling of actions. One has to understand the moral and
ethical values as explained in our religion. We have plenty of spiritual literatures. All of
them are nothing but annotations, amplifications and commentaries upon the said codes
or principles on the practice of good conduct and good deeds. One has to invariably
follow the minimum moral codes such as self-control, not hurting others and maintenance
of truthfulness besides humility. Once these codes strictly followed, one will be able to
enhance personality, physical, emotional and intellectual aspects. Truthfulness governs
one inner mind and intellect. If a person is able to get guided properly through perfect
self-control, and gather knowledge from life’s experiences through truthful acts, and
humility, he/she becomes an elite person in the society.

When a man falls into a well, of what use is it if he controls his voice and his emotions and whispers quietly, "I have fallen into this well.. I have fallen into this well... I am in great danger... Please save me?” and so on. No one will be able to hear or save him. He must shout full-throated, with all the anguish he is experiencing and with the extreme desire to be saved. Then he can hope to get succour. Similarly, when you are caught in the coils of this world, when you have fallen into this deep well of worldly misery, shout with all your might and all your heart, that you may be saved by God. There is no use muttering faintly and half-heartedly, "Save me... I am floundering in this samsaar (worldly life)." When the prayer comes shrieking through the heart, help is assured. Sing with intense yearning for God and enjoy the experience of adoring Him.
- Divine Discourse, 14 Nov 1976

If a person practices dedicated devotion towards God, it becomes easy for a person
to proceed in the path of love towards God and becomes easy for him/her to come out
of illusion of ignorance. Regular dedicated devotion towards God leads a person to a highest
level of divine power. In the process, it facilitates a person to attain liberation. If a person
does this continuously without a wavering mind for quite sometime, automatically the
divine power could be felt. For example, similar to a love of a mother towards her child.
A much higher form of love is the selfless love of the mother for the child. A mother always
cares for her baby to safeguard it. Even if a child commits a mistake, the mother takes the
child in her arms to give comfort and advice in an understandable fashion. She expects no
return and she only desires that the child to learn so as to be happy in life. Like that
devotion towards God, HE never punishes us. HE only educates us through the medium
of Satsangh. Once a person starts loving a form of God in any shape, the small and petty
illusions and problems he/she has will automatically remain far away from him/her because
the mind gets engaged in the highest form of Bhakthi or devotion. It also paves way
to fulfill the hunger for the love towards others also. Divine love fills the heart of a
devotee without any expectation in return. Some people practise abishekams, pujas and
other rituals at home, singing bhajans every Thursday evening regularly, some do homam
i.e. fire sacrifices like Ganapathy, Sundarshana, Navagraha, etc. meditation to attain divine
love, etc. If a person starts involved in such activities or practices steadily and regularly,
automatically bhakthi or devotion towards God will facilitate the mind to enhance its level.
In the process, the mind becomes calm and peaceful, accepting the necessity for prayer or
worship, bhajans regularly and desires to improvise the level of bhakthi to a greater extent.

Worshiping or chanting Mantras daily is to remember the God, because of HIM one is
able to live peacefully on this earth. Therefore, prayer is not primarily for requesting HIM
to bless us only to meet with our day to day needs. Prayer is rather an invocation or
an object of worship or a spiritual entity through deliberate communication. Normally
prayers or worship is done by all Hindus as a matter of religious practice. Sometimes
one does it at home or joins a Satsangh. One goes to the temple to witness Abhishegam
or to do Archana for the welfare or for the relief towards recovery of a person from an ailment
etc. This practice should not be a mechanical prayer, strictly because the elders have
emphasized the need for it. One has to dedicate himself/herself for self-reflection before prayer.
Many are so ignorant or some have unbelief about the Hindu Scriptural values. Somehow
if there is a problem, one goes to the temple and do all the formalities with a general faith
that HE will answer to our prayer and bless us. Rather than this, one has to feel intensely
and do worship daily. One is not going to lose monetarily by expressing one's love
towards God, just for good things only. In fact, one should get into the habit of praying God
daily and thank HIM for all the wishes HE has been showering on us. There is no need to
pray HIM throughout the day for the good things that happen to us or to our relatives, etc.
Chanting of Bhagawan's Nama itself holds so many blessings for a faithful devotee.
Generally, many people feel that they do not have time to study the Hindu scriptures and
understand the truths owing to their household or official activity like business, etc or
may be because of laziness. Every day we consume milk or coffee in the morning without
fail, assuming milk is a complete food and it nourishes. Like that one must feel that chanting
of Bhagawan's Nama will also nourish us if we do it daily without fail.

If you want to light a lamp, you need four things - a container, oil, a wick and a match box. If any one of these is lacking, you cannot light the lamp. Similarly, to light the lamp of spiritual wisdom in your heart, you need – the container of detachment, wick of one-pointed concentration, matchstick of wisdom and the oil of devotion. Of these, the spirit of detachment (vairagya) is crucial. Detachment means absence of body attachment. The sense of possessiveness (mamakara) and the ego-feeling are the causes of this raga (disease). Eradicate this disease of attachment through the process of self-enquiry. When you realise the impermanence of the body and all the sensory experiences, you will naturally acquire detachment (vairagya). Discharge all your duties as an offering to God and treat your body solely as a God-given instrument for the purpose of serving others.

God has created us to understand the true nature and accept the life's
challenges. The primary goal of a person should be to lead a dharmic life
and become a better person without any ego or evil deeds. While Adi Shankara
classifies the categories as Purusha and Prakruthi, Shri Ramanuja adds one
more citing it as Purushothama. These are explained in detail in Gita.
If one is able to replace the concept of self, one can automatically realise
the concept of Supreme Power. The service to the God or to the Society
at large can alone fetch the benefits of fruits, just like the plant adoring
fruits after becoming a tree. Similar to the water and fertilizer are
essential for a plant to grow, the spiritual knowledge and the devotion
are inescapable for a person to attain the higher plane of bhakthi. Spirituality
is the subtle truth of the life of a person. In its absence, one may not be able to
attain satisfaction in life. In fact, it is the pure and dedicated spirituality concepts
makes a person aware of the spiritual awakenings or the true spiritual path.
Everyone has a common goal in life i.e. at one stage or the other to seek or attain
the bliss of God, for which one has to rigidly follow the spiritual path without any excuse.
One should understand that one is not born just to live and leave this earth.
A life has many challenges and there is a reason behind to achieve that and
that is the spiritual aspects of life. One has to find out the actual reason
as to how to proceed about towards that. Sometimes one is able to easily
track the route of values of spirituality while for others it takes time.

I desire that festivals should be celebrated, understanding their inner significance. Deepavali is a special day for getting rid of all the bad qualities in us. As long as the demonic qualities remain, you will be immersed in darkness. The destruction of the demon Narakasura symbolizes destruction of evil and restoration of virtuousness. Also, on Deepavali day, a whole array of lamps are lit by the light from one lamp. That One lamp symbolises the Supreme Effulgent Lord. The other lamps are the light in individual selves. The truth of the Vedic saying, "The One willed to become the Many" (Ekoham Bahushyaam) is exemplified by the lighting of lamps from the flame of one. Another significant fact is that, wherever the lamp may be placed, the flame goes upwards only and never down. Likewise, the flame of Spiritual Wisdom (Jnana) always leads you to a sublime level through the path of Righteousness.
- Divine Discourse, 9 Nov 1988.

While the lamp is lit in the presence of the God in the pooja room, it also helps in lighting
the lamp of wisdom, thus bringing a brightness not only in that place by eliminating the
darkness but also brings in divine awareness. Normally, the brahma muhurtam is supposed
to be between 3:00 am and 6:00 am in the early morning. Lighting a lamp during this time
enables a person's wish to come true. As our Puranas state that life is like the wick of the
lamp; one has to lead a life on this earth in a similar pattern. During Diwali period, lamps
are lit at every home. It is widely followed in North India. It is not purely to decorate the
houses only but to drive away the darkness in the atmosphere but in South India, it is
done during the month of Karthigai. It is done with an aim communicating the profound
truth of driving away the darkness from one's mind. Besides, in North India, Deepawali
is celebrated in a grand scale by doing pujas to Mahalakshmi and it adds to nature of
a festivity by infusing the concept of spiritual aspect in everyone. In fact some start
new accounts on this day. No body would like to keep away from gaining wisdom. One
can gain knowledge through various scriptures, to achieve the light of wisdom through this
Deep Jyothi lit on the Deepavali Day. In other words, the ignorance which is associated
with darkness is completely wiped out and facilitates to light the inner lamp of divinity power.
That is why, in ancient days, Namasmaranam was given significance to gain the divine power
by lighting a lamp in the pooja room. It not only brings calm atmosphere but also facilitates
to frame the mind in the spiritual aspects. One may find it little difficult to sit daily and
do Namasmaranam focusing the mind on the Ishta Devatha or Kula Devatha but if it is practiced
it is very easy. Some people use Rudraksha Mala beads to attain the focus and to control
the mind from wandering. By doing this practice, not only the mind but also the whole body
gets refreshed and one is able to get a state of divine qualities step by step.

Everyone needs light, has a permanent desire to have non-switched brightness of the light
and look for the light of prosperity in life. For some, the mistake is exposed by the Light,
and they want to keep away from the brightness of the light. For some, brightness of light throws
away the doubts through proper explanations of spiritual aspects, some may resist the light
because of their evil deeds to the family and society and for some the brightness
of light throws away the fear of troubles in life. Thus the illumination of light brings in
the presence of the God through the Truth of
good conduct and character. No doubt
each person has freedom to choose whatever they want either consciously
or unconsciously, i.e. what kind of life he or she desires to lead. But one has to
understand that
if we sow a good thought, one reaps a good act, and if one sows
a spiritual act, he reaps of habit of good deeds, and if one sows a good regular habit
of prayer, meditation, worship, etc, he reaps a good character to be appreciated by
everyone and and one sows a character with the result to reap or achieve a memorable
destiny of attaining the bliss of God.

Every human being lives in this Universe only with five senses viz. seeing, hearing,
tasting, smelling, and feeling. At the outset one may say that human beings could not
have arrived at the concept of Divine Power through the five senses. Then how the
question arises. Is it the time and space?. Only through five senses, all human beings
acquire his or her ideas of the universe. In fact, only through the senses human beings
get many things into their mind. Human being in the absence of Divine Power would
not have arrived at the concept of Supreme Power. Then a question arises, whether
our senses always give the true picture or do they not always deceive us. Human being
come to know through the objects that exist corresponding to the perceptions.
Normally one acquires and builds up the perceptions of objects during the course of
practical activity. One get many things in true practical life either through conscious
or through practical interaction with the objects that lie outside. In fact a new born
baby starts and begins to use its senses and get the information about the objects
which are lying around it and it moves to reach those objects. Then it starts thinking
what it can do with them and starts experimenting through the play. Therefore, it is
purely only through our senses one can establish knowledge and arrive at the concept
of Divine Power and this cannot be taken as unreliable. Suppose if a person says that
moon rises in the west could any one accept and normally he/she ignores that.

In those days, getting to Puttaparthi was a herculean task. We had to take a train to Penukonda. From there we had to go by bus, and the last part of the way by bullock cart. Many times we had to walk as much as 18 miles through the forest, and finally over the Chitravathi River to reach Puttaparthi.
As we arrived for the first time, we were surprised to find that Baba had crossed the river to receive us. He was actually waiting for us. Baba immediately came up to my father and asked him:
'Are you not Radhakrishna from Kuppam?' My father replied, 'yes'.
Then Baba said: 'Come on! Prostrate yourself; touch My Feet; all your problems are over.'
My father answered: 'Sorry, no. If my problems should be over, simply as a result of touching Your Feet now, I will have to touch them later.'
Baba said: 'You are certainly going to touch My Feet. Forever you will remain My devotee.'
This statement came true; until my father breathed his last, in spite of so many things, he remained a firm devotee. Baba went on: 'I have come all the way from Ashram to receive you, because you are all My children. 'And we said: 'Good. Thank You very much for all Your hospitality' and we went to the Ashram.
At first Baba used to talk just with my father. Later on He asked us to sing a few songs as the whole family were good singers. We started doing bhajans, which used to last for three or four hours a day.
Our first trip to Puttaparthi lasted for nearly twenty days. In those days it was very difficult to stay there for even a day or two, with all the inconveniences. Yet, despite all the inconveniences, we felt really happy to stay there; we never minded them and often didn't even notice them.
Gradually my father's faith in Baba developed. On my part, I would say that from the beginning I felt a personal attachment to Baba rather than spiritual faith. But naturally, as the attachment grew and as we came to understand Him better, seeing Him from day to day, our faith also increased, most definitely. That is how we became devotees.

In Hindu families many are conversant with the concept of Namasmaran and it is nothing
new. It all depends on the method of practice. Some call it Japa. Some people practice
it by writing Sri Ramajayam daily in a note book and place it at the foot of Sri Rama in the Temple.
Some practice Namasmaran without knowing the depth of its significance as a matter of routine
as the elders have taught them. If Namasmaran is regularly practiced one can overcome the
factor of ego. Sometimes, some people to get away from restlessness adopt the practice of
namasmaran. But in fact if a person does Namasmaran regularly, it will automatically guide
him/her to the path of spirtualism. Namasmaran advocate selflessness too. Further, if a person
sincerely does Namasmaran he/she will get intellectually convinced about its necessity and
importance which transforms the perception, vision, intellectual framework, emotions and feelings.
Continuous chanting of Namasmaran creates in us consciousness of God's presence. Namasmaran
also influences the social life of a person. Now a days people gather in a Satsangh and get associated
with the people and practice Namasmaran regularly to get the bliss of the God.

Everyone work for some sort of material satisfaction in this universe. If one really
desires divine power, one to has to undertake spiritual activity by practicing
meditation, a form of sadhana. Every one has some limitations in life. The thinking
power towards spiritual activity can not be straight away attained. Normally,
every body's mind is not pure. Because it is at the lowest level with so many
evil deeds or thinking. A person who takes to the spiritual path is generally tempted
to relax his efforts half-way. A portion of the people are led by superstition.
Morality and Right Conduct becomes a questionable issue. In order to correct
such people, Sadhana is the best method and it become a continuous journey
to proceed in the spiritual path without any hurdles.

As long as body consciousness remains, the body will be subject to these types of feelings. For instance, all experiences derived through the senses and the mind occurs only during the waking state. When you go to sleep none of these experiences are present. The experiences in the dream state are real as long as the dream lasts. The experiences in the waking state are real in that state. The Reality or Truth, is the ‘I’ that remains in all the states. Over the ages, by identifying the ‘I’ with the body, its true nature has been grossly underrated. Dear Mr Balasubramanian, I have just read all the above writing
s in depth & I feel that you have the analysing capacity of abstract things like godliness/ prayer/ namasmaran etc. For my part I write RAM/
Ram daily 108 times & verbally utter before going to sleep. Also do Vishny Sahasra nama parayanam off & on
This habit keeps me in good stead,
to tackle difficulties , smilingly. It is HE who guides U & why should I not feel free to do y work without expecting the so-called reults ?
Thank
s for talking to me a few days earlier.
Sincerely,
A.Srinivasan ( Rishikesan)
