Many of you are wasting a lot of time in meaningless pursuits. Time wasted is life wasted. Our ancients considered God as the embodiment of time and extolled Him thus: Kalaya Namah, Kala Kalaya Namah (Salutations to the Embodiment of Time, the One who conquered and transcends time). Do not forget the truth that time is verily God. You eagerly wait for a Sunday, thinking that you can relax and enjoy. In fact, you should feel sad that you are wasting time without doing any work on a Sunday. Utilise your time in a proper way. If you do not have any work, undertake social service. When your feelings are pure, and you utilize your time well to perform noble actions, your life will be sanctified and all work you do will be transformed into worship.

Compassion and Loving kindness are regarded as the best the quality of a human being. Possession ofsuch qualities exhibit the true answer when people are servicing the society. It also facilitates toremove the tension or to bring a solution in the event of any social conflicts. One's mind should betrained to have these rich qualities. If it is regularly practiced, it becomes an inseparablecompanion to a person. Compassion is nothing but recognizing the suffering of others and to help them to the extent possible to alleviate their sufferings. Normally, people havecompassion towards friends and relatives when someone go through a hard time. In such events, people immediately identify their sufferings and try to help themto have a positive outcome. Suppose if the same is developed with an open mind towards all beings, it is possible to genuinely feel the needs of others. The very purpose of the Dharma is to develop and integrate the practice of loving kindness and compassion towards everyoneirrespective of their beliefs, gender, race, religion, etc. As Baba says we should love everyoneand bring a spiritual feeling in them so that they are aware of the God's presence.Sai RamBalasubramanianAmbattur
Dear Bala,The key principle of everlasting peace is "self knowledge with experience along with the holy script".Unless some one become knowledgeable , peace can not last long. All divine virtues will become part of the life after realization.Guru can only guide you but you have to comprehend the meaning and its sense and apply it in day today activity. Then you become great learner and peace comes to you by default.

Dear Renu, Sai BABA has gone to his abode in heaven ! Is there any mechanism wherein you can still talk to BABA and get his blessings, BTW ?

I agree with you, but there is one point. Self-knowledge is simply a matter of
understanding oneself and knowing what it makes. Everyone is unique and all are
not alike. Can we say any one is perfect. Perfection is achieved only over the years
after improvising the self knowledge. Some have a big goal but do they know that they
have the adequate capacity to handle any task independently and completely besides
their strengths and weaknesses. Some may not accept the weakness part. If one is able
to understand more about him/her then automatically, there is an enhancement in
self development. In fact, life offers so many things to everyone of us but many
sometimes allow it to drift, possibly, without making even the slightest effort to reach out
with full potential owing to the reasons known to them. God gives everyone brain
power and ability to move on the higher things. But somewhere in the path, self-belief
gets disturbed perhaps mainly owing to lack of self-knowledge. In some cases, the
disturbance appears to be subtle and just keeps piling up until self-belief gets dis-shaped.
It is where the Guru guides his disciple.

Resolve this day to engage only in virtuous deeds, good thoughts and noble company. Let your mind dwell on elevating thoughts. Do not waste a single moment of your time in idle gossip or vain boasting or demeaning recreations. Death stalks behind you to snatch you and carry you off. Consider President Kennedy – how death was lurking around, waiting for the right time? Did he not have powerful soldiers and security men to guard him? All was in vain. No security personnel or device can prevent death from occurring. So while life persists, do good things, speak softly and sweetly. Never injure or insult another, serve those in need and keep the image of God, ever before your mind’s eye.

Every one has his/her own personal values and beliefs and they are influenced by that.
Sometimes, a person's behavior is influenced by the environment too, i.e. may be
from the family, friends, or religious friends circle. Such people who are exposed to
good environment normally have good and ideal values. Behaviour and values could
differ owing to environment and location of the person. If a person is associated with
a religious circle, his/her beliefs will be on the higher plane. We could find from our Upanishads
that the actions of the human beings decide the outcome. The person who does good
activities, automatically, he/she has good values and ideals. Suppose if the person is
associated with evil deeds, there is no question of his/her action being good. Therefore,
one becomes virtuous only by virtuous action and sinful by sinful deeds. That is why, it is
said that as is his desire so is his will, as his will, so is the deed. Finally, the outcome will
be that whatever deed he does, that he will reap. Normally if a devotee is associated with
a Satsang, he will hesitate or will have a second thinking to join the other group. Generally,
a society has its own values and it is mostly influenced by the political as well as religious leaders
of the community. Therefore, as Baba says, one has to try to do good things, get associated
with good people, and should not hurt anyone. Further one should assist those who are in
dire need and render service as if one does to a Supreme Power.

Dear Bala, worldly affairs and divine affairs are two different things but the purpose is same, to live peacefully and have love and compassion for others. Self knowledge is about "Brahm Gyan" as who are you ? Where you came from ? What is your existence ?

That is the best way to make your heart the most precious of your possessions. When God is installed in the heart, you will see only God everywhere, even in the objective world. Normally we notice some people for want of relatives and friends, suffer owing to lack
of affection and love. There is a quotation that flowers look for the sunlight or moonlight and
the human being looks for the affection and love from the near and dear ones. As one has
affection towards the kids, then it not only enhances their relationship but also widens
their interaction with a transparent mind. Only when a person shows affection towards
someone, then the relationship widens and the closeness grows and lasts for long time.
One has to have a mind to show affection towards everyone and love them without any
disparity or bias, irrespective of the religion or caste. If one looks into the eyes of the other
who really looks for the love and affection and embrace that person, in brings in an
enormous amount of elevating thoughts. Normally, we notice even amongst our relatives,
that people telling that nobody likes or loves me. Sometimes, one has to handle our
knowledge intelligently and also show sympathy and kindness towards others, perhaps
with a slight smiling. then the other person gains full self-confidence. For example,
in a house, old people have grandchildren, great grandchildren, etc. If one makes
a friendship with a good person, life becomes very easier and happier. Like that one
has to show love and affection, whenever somebody approaches. Normally, a person
likes someone because he/she shows love and affection, in spite of difference of opinion
sometimes. Like that, if we show love and affection towards God and open our heart
towards him without any restrictions and think about him with love, talk to him with
love, then HE will automatically love us and give us HIS blessings.

Deho Devalaya” – Body is the temple, scriptures teach us. Realize that the human body is not just a mass of flesh and bone. The human body is a sacred instrument equipped with reason and emotion, capable of being used for deliverance from grief and evil; you have earned it after long ages of struggle. Honour it as such, keep it in good condition, so that it might serve that high purpose. Maintain it even more carefully than your brick homes and never let go of the conviction that it is an instrument and nothing more. Use it justly, for the purpose for which it has been designed and given. Install the Lord in the altar of your heart and invite Him into it. God loves to reside in a pure and aspiring heart.

Mind and Body can be powerful or otherwise especially with regard to the belief
towards God. Primarily, one analyses who we are and what are our duties. It has
some core values, based on which we do everything and also believe in that direction,
particularly we create a set of beliefs and define them in our life. Normally, the
mind does not like discipline and sometimes it resists from the efforts that we put
in towards disciplining it. It always likes freedom to do anything of its liking and
sometimes it remains as a stumbling block. For some, it will not allow even to
discipline it or to take control of that. For some, it has a customary effect of
forgetting to do the activities and tempts to postpone in performing them or
makes one feel lazy in attempting it. It has capacity to find many tactics to stop
and create disturbance. In this case, one must be stronger enough to control it.
All this need simple concentration and dedication to do regular mental exercises
like meditation, japam, etc. One has to evaluate and remember that the choice is
ours and not the mind and one should not be a slave to the mind or to its whims
and fancies. Through regular practical mental exercises viz. meditation, etc.,
it is certainly possible to train the mind and exercise a control over it, so as
to maintain it in a proper status. The special act of thought process needs
proper exercise as it passes through in different directions. For some, it may be
hard to accept this concept. In other words, it does not mean holding it back
and denying its freedom. It has to be trained in spiritual acts, particularly, towards
devotion, worship practice and prayer, etc., by which we can concentrate on the
Supreme Power and bring the purity and an aspiring habit of worshiping regularly.

The educators, elders and parents too, on their part, must cleanse their intelligence and practice the same virtues with humility and detachment. The education that is imparted in the Schools has a vast connection
between academic education and enhancement of mental power.
The teachers are the nodal persons to teach moral values and also
about the character development. The intellect and moral character
has a nexus. Children are taught in the Schools to respect and listen
to elders without raising a query initially. Thus teachers play a key
role in cultivating good habits amongst the minds of children. They are
also capable of making an enormous impression in the minds of students
about the spiritual education also. Above all, the teachers spend a major
portion of the day with the students, than parents with their kids. In
the light of the above, the teacher has an ample opportunity to educate
the children not only in academic subjects but also character and spiritual
development activities too. Baba used to mention that while cultivating
knowledge and intelligence, it should also purify the impulses and emotions.
Baba used to emphasize about equipping the children with physical and mental
disciplines that are required for day to day activities particularly with reference
to spiritual aspects too. In fact HE emphasizes in his discourses to foster the
spirituality in the minds of children at the kids level itself, so that the same takes
the root and blossoms when they are grown up. Therefore, in the Schools,
attention is required not only towards academic study but also some spare time
to be earmarked for prayer and spiritual practices, besides attending to discourses
spiritual leaders so as to make them understand the path of spiritual activities
besides gaining self-confidence, self-satisfaction and self-knowledge.

The first time I went – in fact for the first three or four days – I was rather upset, because all the songs of Thyagaraja used to be altered, so that the name ‘Rama’ would be changed to ‘Baba’. Being a student of classical music, I did not very much like that. It created rather a conflict in me. But that time my violin master was with us, and he, who was a classical musician, became impressed with Baba’s music so I decided to let it be, thinking that perhaps Baba was as great as Rama and that therefore it was alright to change the names. Later I became convinced that Baba was as great as Rama.
When I first came to Puttaparthi, Swami used to sing many songs of classical Indian music as an experienced, trained singer. Our family and the Kuppam family were born trained in music, but still Swami would sometimes correct us, also on the text of the songs and the timing of the music. He was a very good singer. My late music teacher, Mr. Chidambara Iyer, who was a violinist with All India Radio in Delhi once went with me to Swami, and was much impressed with His outstanding knowledge of music, although He had never had a music teacher. Sometimes He would sing some rare compositions of Thyagaraja that only learned musicians would know.
Curious was he, my music teacher asked Him once: ‘Where did You learn these songs?’ Baba then answered: ‘Thyagaraja had these songs from Me, Thyagaraja was inspired by Rama’, meaning that Swami was the origin of Thyagaraja’s music.

People who are interested to understand the divine power will always follow the righteous path
and do the dharma, whatever may be the form that are possible to them. Perhaps, it could be
one of the methods of reaching the bliss of the God. In fact, a person in life should have
a hunger to do right things or acts and practice spiritual activities to the extent possible.
That will only produce the right fruit besides quietness and confidence in life. If a person pursues
bad virtues or evil practices it would only lead to the sin and it is generally said and treated as a
cancerous disease. It will not only ruin his life but will also ruin his/her moral excellence or behaviour
and every one must follow the right thinking power with a good thought process. God has given us
a good mental power and that should be used in the right spirit with all the potential that we have
to do the right right things. But it requires good and firm foundation of mind towards spiritual thinking.
Talking careless or ill of others would only bring a bad image to a person and would not fetch a good
position in the life. Even speaking bad words would bring in a sin. Money can be earned at any time
but once morality is spoiled, it cannot be easily rebuilt.

One has to learn many things in life. One of them is the spiritual practice to understand
the purpose of life. Primarily, one must be clear about the role of man and his nature of life.
Our Hindu religion is very clear in this regard. One has to practice certain things in life
regularly so as to keep the mind calm and peaceful by conducting and following the rituals
or studying vedas as outlined in our religion. This would facilitate a person to overcome
from the ignorance and arrive at realization of the supreme power and would also come to
know the factor of enlightenment. Thus basically, it is for the man to realize or understand
his position in the nature and to understand the true meaning of his life. There are many
aspects in life one has to achieve such as wealth, luxury, happiness, respectable positions,
etc. Some may call this as illusion. But our religion is very clear in this regard towards
control of senses and enabling the heart and mind peaceful in executing religious acts.
Another aspect is to eliminate unwanted desires which is the basic cause for many
disturbances. Further one has to have contentment in life. In order to pursue spiritual
life, one has to practice good deeds knowing its objectives. If one pursues good deeds in the right
direction, it paves the way to transform the life of a person. One must take an oath that executing
good deeds is just like breathing a fresh air.

When a plane flies across the sky, it leaves no mark on it, no streak that lasts, no furrow or pot-hole that interferes with the next plane in that path. So too, let any or all feelings or emotions cross your mind, but never allow any of them to cause an impression. You can accomplish this by inquiry, quiet reasoning within oneself. This method is more effective than listening to lectures or studying books. Little children are trained to walk by means of a three wheeled contraption. ThePranava is such an instrument, the three wheels being the syllables A U and M. Holding it, you can learn to use your feet of devotion and detachment. If one walks on with the help of this Pranava meditation, one can certainly realise the glory of the Divine, which is the very substance of the Universe.

As Baba says that if a person is bit by a small ant, he/she immediately reacts to it.
Similarly, one must understand the sufferings of others and try to help them to the
extent possible through whatever possible means. Further one must try to understand
the benefits/comforts that one derives from the society. While one should not be a
burden to others, at the same time, one must try to find out the possible means
to extend help to others. Similarly one must understand the necessity for enhancement
of one's spiritual energy too. In this connection, meditation is the best method.
Mediation also facilitates to quench the thirst of a person's right spiritual path.
If a person is able to concentrate on the spiritual aspects, one can find the true
answers even to the difficult questions, i.e. however, one has to focus on the spiritual
energy. It may be difficult for some people to switch over to positive thoughts suddenly
if they are habituated to negative thoughts. Spiritual prayer particularly in a Satsangh
may help a person to tap spiritual energy. Collective prayer with a group of people like
bhajans, chorus songs, etc. enables a person to renew the faith and the confidence
besides building the strength of one's spiritual energy. Nothing is impossible to achieve.
Similarly nothing is impossible to identify. Lord Shiva Lingam inside the temple is known
as Shooksma Lingam. A person while going in a Car, if he/she stops a for a few seconds
and prays towards the Supreme Power looking at the Temple Tower, he/she is automatically
blessed. Like that nothing is written in the Shiva Lingam which is in the form of a stone.
One needs to focus on it in the form of Supreme Power and slowly that changes the
mental form to improve one's spiritual life. As one experiences spiritual growth, one can
see everything. Mahan Krupananda Variar used to say that if a person watches
the stone of a dog, as stone it looks like a stone, suppose if that person looks
at it as a dog, it becomes a Dog.
