As every Hindu knows, a single word AUM is called as the Pranava Mantram.
It is considered as most significant one in Hinduism. Further, to sanctify this
Lord Muruga's Temple at Swamimalai is an example. The story is related to
Lord Brahma, Lord Shiva, etc. In fact, it is the root form for all the Mantras.
Some call it as bija mantra. In some houses, one can notice a CD is being
played with the chanting of AUM so as to gain good and spiritual and energetic
vibrations. In Upanishads, its significance has been amply explained.
The text of Pranava Mantram is reproduced below as extracted from Mundakopanishad:
Pranavo Dhanu Sharo Hyaatmaa Brahm Tallakshya Muchyate
Apramatten Vedadhavyam Sharavattanmayo Bhavet.
The Sacred Word (AUM) is called the bow,
the arrow is the soul and Brahman is its target;
He shall be pierced by him whose attention does not swerve.
Then he will become one with Him as the arrow becomes one with the target
when it has pierced it. (as extracted from Mundakopanishad II.ii.4)
This rendition of the Pranava Mantra is thus known as Mahamantra.
