Though the elephant lives longer, the lion is more fierce, the eagle more far-seeing, the cock more punctual in early rising, the cow more imbued with the spirit of sacrifice and so on, human birth alone has in it, the potentialities that can be brought out by proper culture. You are born with a helpless lamenting cry; you should die with a smile of joy. That is the purpose of the years between. But those years are wasted now. People are tossed about from one want to another, one grief to another, until they are blinded by despair and exhausted by foiled pursuits. Most illnesses are due to this despair and exhaustion. God alone is your anchor, who will save you from stress and storm. Do not neglect or ignore Him in your life.

Service to God starts with serving the people in our community. One can love, support,
and listen to the people who have problems and give a helping hand i.e. primary thing is
is to understand their problems and help them to the extent within our own capabilities
and limitations. However, one can allocate and prioritize the tasks within the resources available.
One has to contemplate upon the eternal truth and reality. One need not have to think about
the past or look for the future. It is not a wise thing to think about the past or future forgetting
the present as Baba says. The reality of the present period has to be judged. One can never
get back to the past despite our consistent and persistent prayers. Though Astrologers may
predict certain things about the future, one can not actually visualize it cent percent. Hence
we have to concentrate on the present and do our duties to serve the humanity and the
God. One can join a Satsang and do service to the fellow human beings as Baba says. Every moment is
very valuable and we should not forget to worship, pray or do Namasmaran. Service could be
a great Sadhana. One can attend the Pravachanams regularly, one can join Bhajan Groups
and do sing Kirtanams, particularly this month being a Margazhi. As per Baba, the results of service
will be eternal. One has to engage in all satsang activities so as to do service to others.
The purpose of taking birth of a human being can be utilised to the maximum extent by doing service
to others, so long as the healthy Body permits to do that. If one realizes the truth that service
to humanity is service to God, one can easily attain the bliss of the God. One can notice lot
of people gathering in Puttaparuthi and doing service.

The highest spiritual discipline is to follow assiduously the instructions of the Master. Years and years of rigorous training make a soldier, who can then stand all the rigours of warfare. The heroic fighter was not made in a day. Restrictions, regulations, drills and techniques laid out for him, were practised for a long time. So too, the practising spiritual aspirant, who can win victories in life, cannot be made in just a day! Understand this and seize your opportunity in this life; put it to full use. You will need to come and merge in the Divine, if not in this birth, at least in ten more births. Hence, do not let go of the opportunity and strive most earnestly, from today, to acquire the Lord’s Grace. The Compassionate Lord will certainly bestow Grace upon you as a reward for your spiritual practices.

- Divine Discourse, Feb 12, 1964.

God does not ask or expect one's praise or worship, prayer. HE is not only the Creator of
this Earth and also the Heaven besides HE is the Sustainer of everything in this Universe.
Whatever the forms of worship one follows i.e. Bhajan, Prayer, Namasmaranam, etc.
are all the activities of remembrance of the Supreme Power and they act as a form
to kindle our mind and heart in order to enable to keep HIM in our mind always to seek
HIS blessings. Once a person follow these methods, he/she not only adopts the correct
method but also is able to achieve the contentment, peace, and happiness in life.
As a human being every body is prone to laziness and casualness not having any set of
regular and punctual methods to adopt and remember or worship of God, except during
the period of problems and sufferings. The practice of worship or prayer need not be
restricted strictly to the exact hours in a day but it can be done either in the morning
or in the evening but without fail. God can also be remembered anywhere even while
travelling or even during the cooking period by the ladies. Acts of devotion and worship
are performed not just for the sake of remembrance but to keep the presence of the
Supreme Power in our heart thus leading a spiritual life in a way possible to us. For
some, the healing power of the God becomes a divine miracle. Problems and sufferings
are common to every mankind. As one has appetite to acquire personal possessions,
one should also have an appetite to seek the blessings of the God everyday without fail
by chanting HIS Namas. Sometimes, one visits the temples to place the before the God
the anxieties or the problems that one faces because such places provide peace and tranquillity.

" Kasthuri has just now read from the Panchangam (almanac) for the New Year, the predictions of the astrologers about rainfall, the condition of the crops, the prices of articles in the markets, the rise and fall in the rates of gold and silver, the prospects of internal and external peace, the occurrence of natural calamities like floods, droughts, earthquakes, etc. But reading all this only increases your worries, your restlessness. Take things as and when they come. Do not try to peep too far into the future with the help of astrologers. They are mostly wrong, and the data you supply them are mostly unreliable.
Take care of the Panchangams (the five-limbed almanacs) within you; that is more vital. The Panchangams within you are the five senses; educate the mind to hold them in check - then you can have peace of mind, whatever the rise in the market rates or the quantity of rain. Do not get panicky over what the almanac says about the combination of many planets, the Ashtagrahakoota. They exaggerate the consequences; nothing much will happen; the Pralaya (destruction of the Universe) is more in the frightened mind than in external nature. If you earn the Anugraha (blessing) of the Lord, no graha (planet) or combination of grahas can harm you. If you learn how to secure that Anugraha, you need not worry about the Panchangam.
Today, you are celebrating the arrival of a New Year with a new name, a name that you will use for twelve coming months. But remember, it is not the year alone that is new once in 365 days. Every day is new, every hour and minute, every second is new. Do not celebrate only the New Year Day in joy; celebrate every second in joy.
Start from today, not that today is a New Year - there are so many New Years celebrated as such by one or the other community that every day is a new year to some one set of people - but because it is today and the matter brooks no delay, start from today a new chapter in your life, the chapter of Japam (recitation of holy name) and Dhyanam (meditation), Japa-sahitha Dhyaanam (recitation-oriented meditation) or Dhyaana-sahitha Japam (meditation-oriented recitation). In the Thretha Yuga, the Name was SeethaRama; in the Dwapara Yuga, it was RadheShyama; in this Kali Yuga, it is Sarvanaama, that is to say, all Names of the Lord; you can select any one that appeals to you.
Life is like a flight of steps towards the Godhead. You have your foot on the first step when you are born; each day is a step that must be climbed; so be steady, watchful and earnest. Do not count the steps ahead or exult over the steps behind. One step at a time and that well climbed, that is enough success to be satisfied with and to give you encouragement for the next one. Do not slide from the step you have got up on. Every step is a victory to be cherished; every day wasted is a defeat to be ashamed of.
Slow and steady - let that be your maxim! Adhere to a regular routine, a time-table. Just as the doctor prescribes a certain fixed measure or weight of the drug and warns you that anything less is ineffective and anything more is harmful, so too, have some limit for your spiritual exercises. Do not overdo them or do them casually and without care. The doctors tell you also about the hour of the day and the number of times the drug has to be repeated, for, the action of the quantity taken must be reinforced before it becomes weak. So also, you have to repeat the Japam and Dhyanam at regular intervals.
Millionaires who always go about in cars and aeroplanes and people of sedentary habits are advised by doctors to take a long walk every morning. The walk is called a 'constitutional', because it helps to build up the constitution. Similarly, to get over the mental ills consequent on too-long brooding over worldly affairs, the Guru will advise you to have a long spell of Dhyanam and Japam. Do not move so fast with the world; the cure for moving fast is to sit quiet. Do not get entangled in the vain hubbub of the world; the treatment for those who suffer from the after-effects of that is silence and meditation.
You will have observed that when your train is stationary, another train moving along another line gives you the feeling that it is your train that moves. If you watch your coach, fix your attention on your train, you know the truth. Similarly, as long as your attention is turned on "the other," "the outer," your knowledge is based on illusion. Once you divert the attention to yourself, you can discover the truth, viz., though the world moves, you are still.
In the Panchangam, as Kasthuri quoted now, it is also predicted that in the year that is born today, the number of people who deride God and who laugh at Him and hate Him will increase. Let Me ask, how can that happen, for that number has reached the maximum already! The cynical spirit of derision and ridicule is the bane of this age; but there is no reason for the godly to be down-hearted. At least the coming Ashtagrahakoota (conjunction of eight planets) will put some fear into people's minds and they will call on God to save them and they will do various acts to propitiate the divine beneficence in order to overcome the maleficence of the planets. Therefore, the prediction might prove incorrect, after all. Be assured that the Lord has come to save the world from calamity. Your duty is to keep calm, to pray for the happiness and prosperity of all. Do not pray for your own exclusive happiness, and say, "Let the rest of the worl d go to pieces." You cannot be happy when the rest of mankind is unhappy. You are an organic part of the human community. Share your prosperity with others; strive to alleviate the sufferings of others. That is your duty.

Normally to assess the time, one uses a clock. To measure a temperature and speed,
one has to use a proper instrument and no guessing can bring a correct or proper result.
Whereas, to assess a feeling of a person whether he feels guilty, happy, peaceful,
excited, anxious, lucky etc., can be gauged through the spiritual reality of a person.
Thus Spiritual modes are literally very very imperative to a person to have a peaceful life
and survival. Our scriptures are equivalent to a dial meter used in a pilot’s cockpit to
drive the aircraft safely. Normally, emotions fluctuates very widely. Generally one
forgets the deficiencies, if any, within him/her. In order to achieve good things in life,
one has to have adequate faith in God and has to continuously look for the God's wishes and
blessings. Prayer or worship alone strengthens the faith of a person. If one believes
in God and does the prayer, God always comes forward to help such people in the form
of some person or deed. Therefore, absolute faith is required to receive the God’s blessings.
Everybody has God's blessings but some do not realise until the problems come up.
One can see the Supreme Power's blessings only when he/she does sincere prayer and
worship. People those who worship normally fetches the good results. If one feels
God is within him/her, he/she receives always good results. The moment, they forget
HIM, the outcome will indicate them otherwise. Everyone has a heart and a human being
cannot live without a heart and the soul. One can notice something outside the body,
if it is physically present. But then can one remove the heart outside and see himself/herself.
That itself indicates the feeling of separation of God's power from within. One cannot
separate the heart and the body so as to explain God is within. As heart is part of parcel
of a person's body, God also lives within everyone. Once it is separated, one cannot
exist like that God's presence. Hence, if one really feels, God is within, then there is
no sense of separation from the mortal body.

Lord Jesus Christ gave the following example while teaching His fishermen disciples: ‘In a river the water is flowing in a swift current. But the tiny fishes are able to swim in it and move about merrily, despite the speed of the current. In the same river, a huge elephant caught in the rapids, is likely to get washed away or drowned in spite of its enormous size. The elephant just cannot survive there! The reason is: What you need for survival in a river is not being large, but the ability to swim. Likewise a person who is caught up in the ocean of worldly existence needs, not so much metaphysics, scholarship or wealth, as much as the grace of Divine love.’ Without any knowledge of Vedanta, one can still surmount all the problems of life if one is blessed with God's love. Hence, remember the Lord with Love, worship Him with Love and sanctify your life with Love.

One has to develop the practice of worship as a natural instinct and it is a basic need for every
one of us. In fact worship has to be a routine activity just like eating food. It is not absolutely
essential to have special practice or knowledge or experience. However some knowledge of our
custom and tradition is a logical requirement. Everyone must understand that there is an imperative
to think of God who has created us. Everyone has to have a quest to find answers to the basic
questions of our origin, destiny, etc. If this is thought about, one would understand the necessity
for a worship. Worship is nothing but an expression of love and regard/respects to the Supreme Power
who gives us more than what one really deserves. Worship is not only done for self development
but also for one another besides for others in the family and above all that for the community in a
Satsang. One generally begins with chanting Slokas or Bhajans and continues with a blend of traditional
practices in a Satsang. There is no need to follow the same method of worship by everyone.
One may notice in Bhajans, someone raising their hands in the praise of the God, while singing,
and it is just an expression of praise towards God. The worship is nothing but an expression of our love
towards God besides our gratitude. Many different forms of worship are explained in our Scriptures.
Some play musical instruments and also raise hands while singing. Vedanta give adequate information
about the method of practice to eradicate the ignorance in us once and for all and also enables
a person to attain the highest spiritual enlightenment, besides peace, happiness and freedom (Moksha).

Live in truth, you will then experience Divine Bliss. Faith in God promotes love. Love leads to peace. Peace prepares the way for truth. Where there is faith there is Love, Where there is Love there is Peace, Where there is Peace there is Truth. Where there is Truth there is Bliss, Where there is Bliss there is God. The Divine manifests Himself in many forms and is worshipped as such, for the joy to be derived from it. Truth is one, regardless of nation or religion. The names and forms of human beings may vary, but the Supreme in them (Sath-chith-ananda) does not vary. It is eternal and changeless. Embodiments of Divine Love! Strike down the walls that separate man from man. Get rid of differences based on caste and creed. Develop firm faith in the oneness of Humanity. Cultivate love in your hearts. Then nations will be united, prosperous and happy.

Generally many people talk about the past events while discussing belief, faith, reason
for God's existence, etc. Faith is a form of reliance on God and it is a set of belief
from some of the past events, which can be traced through our spiritual history. One
must have complete faith in God, right from the inner heart. It is not an intellectual
activity. It is through spiritual practices, one can understand and feel the existence of
God's presence in all our life activities. To be precise, belief is a kind of a positive idea
regarding truth about something or someone. One must understand God is much bigger
than our human mind. One should have a positive mind without unwavering expectation.
The act of faith in God is like a positive signal in our hearts, i.e. that the good things are
on the way of a person. Thus, faith living always has sequential actions in one's life.
Whereas lack of faith in God leads to disobedience of spiritual activities. Hence, faith
is a fruit of the spiritual activities. Faith develops intimacy towards God in our heart.
We have been taught by our ancestors about the spiritual activities and also about
religious concepts, traditional practices, ways of doing things, etc. and these
things have been passed on to us through the generations. Faith is nothing but a
spiritual substance in carrying out various religious course of acts. Faith & Spirituality
encourages contemplation, meditation and prayer.

In the world today all those who are held in high esteem as great personages, have earned their good name only by their character and conduct. To accomplish anything, one should have a firm determination. All religions and scriptures agree that helping fellow-beings in times of need and saving them from distress is the greatest virtue. Every human being has equal rights in the world, for Divinity is present in all. To enjoy peace of mind, it is essential to practice forbearance and equanimity. Good and bad, rich and poor, educated and uneducated exist in every country. Even though born in the same family, some are narrow minded and have crooked ideas and indulge in selfish deeds, while others are noble and selfless. To be friendly towards all beings and do good with love is the primary duty of all.

- Divine Discourse, Dec 25, 1992.

Normally, performance of a noble deed is an admirable activity owing to compassion
and a desire to do a good thing to others. A noble deed can be a method to help others
in times of dire necessity for a specific cause. These days, people never do selfless good

deeds, even if they intend to do so. Chiefly because, people expect appreciation in
their subconscious. Some may come forward to help someone it is purely because he/she likes
him/her, so it becomes selfish. Sometimes one's activity gets back in the same way one
expects and that may be an anticipation. One may face many upheavals in life. Therefore,
one cannot expect the results to be favourable and it may against his/her expectation
or contrary to his/her desire. Generally, selfless deeds are spontaneous and it is an
action of unconditional affection or love or a friendly act. While, sometimes, one does

something good to some one because he/she simply wants to get to know them better
or build up a relationship with such people. As long as a person has expectation, his ego is
not completely removed and such people are not capable of delivering selfless deed.
Equanimity
throughout is a perfect, unshakable balance of mind. One has to understand
the various events in life that one undergoes owing to one's Karma. It is said that noble
and selfless deeds provide the best defence against the expectation of severe calamity of destiny.
Primarily, to establish equanimity state of mind, one has to give up all possessiveness.
One has to look at the world around and look into his/her own heart and understand as
to how difficult it is to attain and maintain balance of mind. Selfless deed is a sacrifice in life.
As Baba says, people in the same family do not possess the same qualities. Therefore,
everyone has to practice and cultivate a habit of helping others without looking for
anything in anticipation.

Embodiments of Love! In all religions and countries, birthdays of great personalities are celebrated, but the ideals for which they lived are not remembered and followed. This turns celebrations into artificial observances. Christ taught people to love all beings and serve all with compassion. It is only by practising these ideals that one can truly celebrate Jesus Christ’s birthday. The Divinity within should be reflected in your every action. The seat of Truth is in your heart. Worshipping God means loving others with your full heart. You must live in love and lead a life of selfless service based on love. This is the best way to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

Bhakthi is just nor a mere love towards God, in fact it embraces many concepts.
It is a step towards spiritual journey. It consists of mainly faith, trust, confidence
and devotion. Pure and selfless devotion to God can fetch salvation to a person.
Intense spiritual love and devotion can lead a person towards Bhakthi margam.
While some are in distress, they seek the help of the God to seek a solution to the
problem, they are facing. Some are inquisitive to search the method for acquiring
wealth. The other section is looking for enhancing the knowledge and wisdom towards
attainment of bliss. Sacrificial and selfless service of a person leads towards liberation.
Some try to use a process to gain physical, mental and spiritual power and this too
amounts to a part of self-egoism. Prahalada has taught us many guidelines in the
Mahabhagavatham how to seek the bliss of the God. While there are many methods
to achieve liberation, selfless service is primary. However one can practice these
to attain selfless service, i.e. One can listen to tales and glories of God through
Pravachanams, singing and reciting the Namas of God, recalling the God through
smaranams, pada sevanams or pada sevai, ritual worships through archanai, prostration
to the Supreme Power, and rendering service to HIS disciples, dedicating oneself
to HIM with full heart and soul. Selfless service to the Satsang can also be done.

Repetition of God’s Name is the process by which the dedicatory attitude can be cultivated and grown. When confronted by a calamity, you must attach yourself to this spiritual practice, even more firmly, instead of losing faith in it and getting slack. Do not give up the medicine, when you need it the most! The pity is that when most people face the first disappointment, they lose courage and confidence, and give up their Lord! There are also others, who call out the Names of the Lord, when they are displeased with some happenings, or when they are depressed, in a tone indicative of disgust, uttering it with a sigh or a groan. This is very incorrect. The Name of the Lord must always be pronounced with joy, gratitude, exultation and remembering Him in all splendour. Call Him with Love, call Him with a heart full of sincere yearning.

A devotee can get a great help by chanting HIS Namas. Singing in a loud voice
the bhajans and keertans of the God brings in cheers and happiness. Lound chanting
has its own advantage as compared to silent meditation. Loud chanting of devotional
songs composed by famous Saints viz. Meerabai, Soordas and Tulsidas, etc.
outlines God's Namas. By loud singing, one will not become lethargic or idle.
Nama sankeertanam is a form of music. Music is always pleasing to one's ears.
Besides, the mind experiences happiness because the mind likes music.
In the form of music, one can engage the mind in the thoughts of his/her Ishta
Deivam for a longer duration. Normally, when a child crys people feel disturbed.
Similarly if somesone drops something because of the noise one gets disturbed.
If there is a quarrel in the family or amongst friends or relatives one gets distracted.
Whereas if one does Namasankeertanam the sound that emanates gives a pleasing
effect because of musical instrument and sweet voice of the Singer. In such
situations, the mind concentrates and attention will be God much more compared
to other activities. It is mainly because that all the senses get involved in
Namasankeertanam, and as a result, there is no possibility to hear other sounds.
With the result, the mind will stay put and will not be as tempted to hear other things.
Some times during meditation or silent prayer, many people feel sleepy owing to the quiet
atmosphere created by mental repetition. Sleep comes very easily. Whereas this
does not happen in Namasankeertanam, since everyone repeats and sings along with
the Singer, sometimes clapping with your hands. Ears listening to the music, mind
concentrates on God. In other words, every sense-organ gets involved in the chanting of
slokas or sangeerthanams. The above process will remove all the obstacles.

There are learned scholars who spend a good deal of time in arguing that this form of God is superior to the other. This delusion has caused great harm. The truth is that each reveals a certain phase of Divinity. The comparison itself diminishes the integrity of any scholar! Anyone who has reverence for God, would not attempt at intellectually estimating the power of the Lord, they would, in fact, earnestly try to get an intuitive experience of the Divine! Harmony is the test of any religious outlook; if it breeds hate or faction or pride, the outlook is definitely evil. Keep away from these, if you are interested in your spiritual practice.

Spiritual Sadhana with determination can definitely help to achieve a goal, but it is
important to practice regularly. Spiritual practice also helps to purify, strengthen,
and elevate one's body, mind, and spirit. Some of them are yoga, breathing exercises
i.e. pranayamam, meditation, contemplation, chanting of mantras, study of spiritual materials,
singing of devotional songs, Namasangeerthanam and all related devotional activities, etc.
Spiritual discipline facilitates to enhance the willpower of a person. Over a course of time,
one is able to attain self-control, which enables meeting challenges with one's willpower.
Attaining self-control in an area gives the strength to free ourselves from harmful habits.
Once a person is able to gain control over the senses, one can do anything with a commitment.
One can meditate for a longer duration, rather which is an exercise for the mind. Above all
Spiritual Sadhana brings more divine power to attain the bliss of the God.
