Respect your parents:

Bhagawan has time and again stressed on the supreme significance of serving one’s own parents, especially when they turn old. As you sow so you reap…as you take care of your parents, you will be taken of by your chilren…says Bhagawan narrating a beautiful tale.

We should respect our elders and parents. Today sons have no respect for their fathers. By disrespecting your father, how do you expect respect from your children? As is the food so is the belch, as is the seed, so is the fruit.

Once there was a rich man. He lived with his wife, son and his aged father. One day the rich man and his wife thought, “Why should this old man be with us in this house? He is a nuisance to us. It would be better to keep him outside, in a small room in the verandah.” And so the rich man made his aged father stay in a small room in the verandah, serving him his daily food in an earthen vessel.

The rich man’s son, however, was very fond of his grandfather. He would go to his grandfather’s room and tell him, “Grandfather, tell me about your experiences, and what had happened in your life time.” The child’s parents were recipients of modern education, and hence thought that their child would get perverted if he pays heed to the old man. And so they kept the child away from his grandfather.

This little boy had a tender heart. He thought, ‘Whose property are my parents enjoying? It is my grandfather’s property. My parents are having a good name because of my grandfather. My parents are enjoying this property at the cost of my grandfather’s suffering.’ Thinking so, one day the little boy hid the earthen plate which his parents used for serving his grandfather. The next day, when the parents were searching for the plate, their son came and asked, “Father, mother, what are you searching for?” The parents replied, “Nothing in particular. We are just searching for the earthen plate in which we serve food to your grandfather.”

The boy took courage and said, “Father you don’t need to search for the plate. I have hidden the plate myself.” Hearing that his own son had hidden the plate the father started reprimanding him and started asking him the reason for such behaviour. To this the son replied, “Father, just as you are serving your father in the earthen vessel, I too will have to serve you in the same vessel once you become old. Therefore I have hidden it so that I can preserve it for your old age.”

As you take care of your parents, you will be taken care of by your children. Therefore, at this age, we must know the value of respecting our parents. I tell the boys many times that your blood, food, head and mind are given by your parents. So first you must pay your respect to your parents. Since parents have given you birth and have brought you up, you must first pay respect to them, even before God. God has given us mud and water, but the pots are made by the potters and not by God. In the same way, God has created our parents, and they, in turn, have given us this form. We owe this form to our parents. Your parents are the foundation of this body.
Therefore it is said, Mathru Devo Bhava, Pithru Devo Bhava – Mother is God, Father is God. Parents are Divine. Even today, we may find a wicked son, but never a bad mother. Parents bring you up with so much love. You should never forget your parents’ love. Remind yourself of their love and lead a life of integrity and morality.

Everyone has inside them a whole set of animals. You must suppress the tendencies of these animals and encourage the human qualities of love and friendship to shine forth. Begin the cultivation of virtues even when young, it is very important and more beneficial than book-learning. Treat everyone as your own people and even if you cannot do them any good, desist from causing any injury. Burn the lamp of love in the niche of your heart and the nocturnal birds of greed and envy will fly away, unable to bear the light. Love makes you humble, it makes you bend and bow when you see greatness and glory.

If one concentrates and dedicates the life to HIM, HIS divine power,
will give us everything in life and also show a way to lead a godly life.
Self control and perseverance will bring in us good qualities in a good
measure for gaining productive knowledge to attain salvation in life.
One has to make every effort to enhance the faith in HIM and to
understand the goodness of his presence in one's mind and heart.
One is not to get entangled in petty issues of material assets and wealth
acquisition or pleasures or comforts, etc than thinking of HIM. For this,
one has to meditate or pray regularly to overcome such flaws. Necessity
and need for perfections should not be searched only at the time of
troubles or problems in life.

My name is Darius Zukas and my wife's name is Lolita - we are from Lithuania, Europe. We feel much honoured to tell the story of our daughter Atile. Her entry into this world was Swami's miracle. Atile was born on 1st July, 2000. In April, 2000, we came to Brindavan for just 12 days to say "Thank You" to our beloved Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
When Lolita was in her 4th month of pregnancy, she suddenly felt unwell, one day. Usually she had a very good connection with the child. So we went to our local doctor that we were registered to. Lolita underwent an ultrasonic test. It showed that the baby in the womb was dead; no heart beat, no breathing, no movements… We were much depressed.
My wife got the papers to be admitted to the hospital next morning for cleaning operation. We went home feeling very sad. I remember very well, it was a Thursday - a day earmarked for the worship of Guru, The Supreme Teacher. So, we decided to pray to our Guru and God. We could not sleep that night - we had spent it praying to Swami, “Swami, it is not fair - we cannot accept this situation, please help us…”
In the morning, we packed the things needed for the hospital and went for admission. When we came to the hospital in Vilnius, we were asked once more to undergo the ultrasonic test. This time, the doctor was quite surprised - she looked once, twice, and said: "why have they sent you for an operation? You and your child are okay!" We could not believe in the first instance, and then we burst into a laughter - we knew it was Swami!!!
We were so happy that we decided to get the tickets to pay our heart-felt gratitude to Swami. And this gave us an opportunity to spend four precious years of our lives in Prasanthi, serving Bhagawan.

Sai’s Messages On Yugadi
"Today (Yugadi day, 18 March 1999) New Year has begun. With sacred feelings and divine thoughts, cultivate the spirit of love in you. God is not found separately in a temple or in an Ashram etc. Truth is God. Love is God. Dharma is God. When you worship God by following these principles. He will manifest Himself then and there. There is no doubt about this. You should love God wholeheartedly." "You must pray with a broad feeling: Loka Samstaa Sukhino Bhavantu (May the whole world be happy!). Start the New Year with this prayer. Then you will lead a blissful and peaceful life full of enthusiasm." Sai Baba, SS, 4/99. p. 91
"You must use the time well for the benefit of all. As you think, talk and act, so will be the results. Think of God and do good deeds by way of service to society, chanting the name of God." Sai Baba. SS, 5/94, p. 126

Significance Of The Yugadi Prasadam
"On Yugadi day, it is a practice among the rural folk to eat what is called Yugadi Pachchadi (Yugadi chutney). This chutney is made from Neem flowers, mango juice, honey, sugar and other ingredients with different tastes. The inner significance of this preparation is to indicate that life is a mixture of good and bad, joy and sorrow, and all of them have to be treated alike with equanimity. Everyone should make resolution that he would face calmly whatever happens, accepting with good grace. Welcome everything. Do not bemoan over anything. Consider everything as for your own good. This is the primary purpose of the Yugadi festival." Sai Baba, SS, 4/99,

Every little moment or incident results in sound; be it the falling of an eyelid over the eye or the dropping of dew on a petal. The range of one’s ear is limited to what one can hear. Even a poisonous cobra can be quietened by music. Sound (Naadham) has that property. The child in the cradle stops wailing as soon as the lullaby is sung. It may not carry any meaning that the child interprets, but the sound does soothe the nerves and induce sleep. So too, the sound of a Manthra is as valuable as its meaning. The meaning of the Gayathri Manthra, is very direct and profound. It does not ask for mercy or pardon. It asks for a clear intellect, so that the Truth may be reflected therein correctly, without any disfigurement. This can be chanted by people of all times and will help aspirants to intensify their Sadhana and achieve success.

Chanting of Mantras produces divine sounds and it produces an actual physical vibration.
If mantras are chanted with proper accent/sound and rhythm it produces powerful result
not only to the mind but also in the vicinity surrounding that place. Sincere chanting brings
in an effect in the subconscious mind. Chanting of the mantras everyday at a particular
time brings in lot of benefits and produces peace of mind. Further chanting of mantras
liberates us from the excessive and unwanted preoccupation with acts of one's physical
bodies and concern for material gains. Further, one gets a feeling of not knowing the
fear of old age, sickness and death, etc. Mantras can be chanted for various purposes.
It mainly produces spiritual development and knowledge if one focuses the mind with
concentration. Besides, one must understand the difference between chanting of a
mantra and a devotional song. The regular chanting of mantras enhances concentration
memory power, purifies one's heart and facilitates to reduce the effects of past karma.

The qualities and defects you see in others,
Are none other but those which are in you,

Recognition of them would not be possible,
If they were not, but a reflection of yours.

Significance Of The Special Food On The Tamil New Year

baba_c_ph.jpg

"On New Year day, it is a practice to mix sweet, sour and bitter things and eat them. It is to indicate that joy and sorrow have to be treated with equanimity. It is the tongue that tastes the delicacy and it is the heart that tastes love. The taste of love is peerless. It is sweeter than even nectar. Love alone can match love. God is love; love is God; live in love." Sai Baba. SS. 5/99. p. 128 (Tamil New Year Day)

Human beings are the only species that can recognize greatness and revere the glorious. Use that capacity, discriminate and get the maximum benefit out of it, in this birth. Be convinced and have firm faith that the Truth will set you free and will protect you. Just as there are two wires, the positive and the negative which are brought together to produce light, so too the Supreme Self (Paramatma) and the spiritual aspirant (Sadhaka) have to meet in Yoga, to receive illumination! So gladly go to the holy places and keep company with the holy and the pious. A magnet attracts pure iron, similarly a sincere aspirant is attracted to only such things that will grant them Joy and Courage.

Devotion to the Divine will give you Bliss, prosperity and peace. - Baba

If one is required to attain peace in life, divine blessings are essential. It is
generally noticed only in a person who has a pure heart. If one attains peace,
say inner peace, it becomes independent and does not bother about
external conditions.
If one is able to feel the presence of the Supreme Power, he/she
becomes fearless and enjoys the infinite peace and bliss. Therefore, one has
to have a goal of Gods existence realization. Hence, one has to live for that.
In order to attain that one has to pray or worship daily with complete dedication
and faith/concentration. This also needs to observe a simple and pure life.
Once this is practiced one can attain perfection in life. Human birth is a rare
opportunity one gets. One has to come out of family bondage, sorrow, sufferings
emotional feelings, weaknesses to pleasures and comforts, etc. so as to attain
the bliss and the divine power. If one makes this as the aim of the life, the life
can be an enjoyable one. One can get this through contemplation on
the Supreme Power by meditation, prayer, namasmaran, etc.

One has to keep away from false words or actions or harsh words and unnecessary
gossiping. Even physical action can hurt some one and while if some one writes words
of harsh to some of his relatives or friends, it can create a cleavage between the family
and friends than verbal harsh words. Hence it will be evident one that it brings
enmity and one loses wisdom resulting in absence of peace in the family and so on.
One has to practice truth in all his/her words or actions and one should not be careless in
using the words or actions. If once the tongue slips, it can bring a great damage
between the family and friends. Therefore, one has to avoid such things so
as to maintain peace and good relationship amongst family and friends, etc.
If one does not like the other person because of his/her attitude or action, better
to maintain silence and keep away from them. Silence can bring many benefits
in one's life during such occasions. In fact a spiritual seeker practices only silence.
Soft speech would reduce the gap even between the two enemies too.

Having been born here on Earth, growing here, are we ever grateful to Mother Earth?…the mother that grants us everything, wherewithal for our daily living…are we humans ever thinking of the pristine selfless love Mother Earth holds for her children? Humans were not doing so need to change their perceptions and look upon Mother Earth with love, respect and reverence…

God is everywhere, and is everything; so, it appears as if He is nowhere, and He is not in anything! For, to know Him you try to identify Him as someone foreign and unique. He is Love, Power, Truth, Wisdom and Beauty. When you accept Love, you accept God. The tender plant of spirituality can grow only in the field of Love. It cannot thrive in the dehydrated loveless land of human hearts. Remove all traces of salinity from your hearts adding to the soil the precious complement of the Name of the Lord. Water it with Faith. Then plant the seedlings of Divinity; have discipline as the fence, and steadfastness as the pesticide to be sprayed. Then, you can reap the rich harvest of Jnana (wisdom), which will free you from the task of cultivation forever.

One has to make an attempt to live sincerely, whether it be sorry state of
affairs, worry or problems, leaving everything to HIM, assuming that it is
HIS desire to make us feel about HIS existence. One may get many
disappointments in life, perhaps owing to certain faults or committing certain
wrong things knowingly or unknowingly. If a person has a broad mind to accept
anything and everything in life and at the same time think about the Supreme
Power which plays a role in his/her life, automatically one gets spiritually
enlightened to love one and all. Experience has no boundary and it is never
to be taken as final and it is matter of sensibility and intuition of seeing and
hearing the significant things in life and paying attention towards the right moments
and understanding and coordinating the activities with love and affection
towards the Supreme Power brings in many cheerful moments in life. All
people may not understand the truth of real love and affection at the first
instance unless they too experience. Such people have to be made aware
of important things in life which they have to learn for themselves over a
course of time and correct the mistakes or flaws that they commit, so that
the results that are obtained owing to the lessons learnt make them to rectify
or correct themselves. Experience one gains through association of Satsangh
makes a person to be useful in the society and gains love and affection which
in turn brings them the real truth of existence of affinity between people and the
Supreme Power.

The story of a little sparrow

Swami began to narrate the story of a little sparrow.
There was a huge banyan tree in a forest, spreading out its mighty branches. Each of these mighty branches bore many smaller secondary branches which in turn bore many more. This kind of repeated branching resulted in small twigs with leaves on them. On one such twig sat the little sparrow.

The sparrow was chirping away merrily. Its high-pitched notes filled the air and resonated through the forest. It was a happy song.

Suddenly, there came a strong gust of wind which soon developed into a storm. At first, the twig on which the sparrow sat, began to quiver and quake; shiver and shake. As the wind grew in its strength and intensity, the whole branch began to sway uncontrollably. soon, the huge banyan tree itself was reeling under the impact of the powerful storm. It was trembling as the furious wind began to lash at it. In a moment, the little branch on which the sparrow was sitting snapped. The branch fell to the ground.

What happened to the little sparrow?

“Nothing happened to the sparrow because it just flew away. It fluttered its wings even as the branch broke and it just flew away.”

The lesson from the sparrow

7862994_f496.jpg

“The sparrow was saved because it depended on its wings rather than taking support and assistance from the leaves, twigs or branches of the tree. In your life too, your will see that your perch is disturbed by the winds of change. Problems and disasters strike with all force and seem to have the capacity to uproot you. At such times, do not depend on the flimsy twigs or even the seemingly sturdy branches that the world offers to you. Depend on your wings and you will always be safe. What are these wings? They are the wings of faith and self-confidence.”

With the story of the sparrow that Swami narrated, the poem becomes so clear. Self-confidence and faith in God always go hand in hand. One without the other is not only meaningless but also impossible - just as flight needs the bird and the wings; travel needs the feet and the way; sight needs the eyes and the form. Faith in God is necessary for the completion and fructification of our efforts.
