Sabari, the aboriginal character in the epic Ramayana is a great celebrity in the world of devotees as she epitomised highest sadhana with her pure unsullied love for Her Beloved Lord Sri Ramachandra. An aboriginal woman she was, Sabari grew curious after she heard of Lord Rama and His proposed visit to Sage Matanga’s hermitage, during Rama’s sojourn in the forest. Ever-since she remained God-intoxicated thinking of Rama alone, desiring for His darshan. Narrating this beautiful story, Bhagawan urges His devotees to take a cue from the illustrious life of this devotee of His Treta Avatar and attain the Ultimate.

Sabari had a very tender compassionate heart. How she came to Matanga Rishi and stayed at his hermitage is a very interesting story. Her marriage was arranged by her parents, and as was the custom among the Adivasis (aboriginals) a goat was to be offered to the tribal Goddess, on the night previous to the cere¬mony, in order to win the Grace for the couple. When Sabari came to know about this slaughter, she wept, and fell at the feet of her parents, praying them to save the goat. She asked, “How can our married life be happy, when the dying bleat of this goat is the prologue?” But, the father pushed her aside and proceeded with the cruel rite. That night, Sabari stole out of that den of torture, and hid herself in the depths of the jungle that was not far off.

When day dawned, her parents as well as the groom’s party were plunged in grief and anxiety; they combed the area, even where she was lying low amidst the thick bushes, and they went back, saying among themselves, “She could not have gone to the her¬mitage, for no woman would be given asylum there.” She heard these words and so, she concluded that the hermitage was the safest place for her. She felt that some monk will take pity on her, and not send her back. Matanga espied her and gave her permission to be in his habitation. He told her that God in the form of Sri Rama was coming to the hermitage some day, since He had been exiled into the Forests for t4 years and He is eager to save the monks and seekers, doing Tapas in the forests, from the ravages of the demonic enemies of peace! Rama, he said, was proceeding from one region to another with His consort Sita and His brother, Lakshmana.

From that day Sabari had no other thought than that of Rama, no other desire than the desire to have the darshan of Rama, the chance to touch His Feet and the opportunity to speak with Him. Her heart was saturated with the Ramarasa (the essence of Rama principle), the sweetness of the Rama principle. She had no other Japam or Dhyana or spiritual exercise. She spent her time preparing for the visit of Rama to the hermitage; just as she cleaned the paths, she cleaned her heart, too. Pebbles and thorns disappeared from both through her efforts. She walked through the undergrowth and removed overhanging creepers and briars, for she imagined Rama would not have com¬bed His hair and it might get caught. She broke the lumps of earth, for she feared the tender soles of Sita will be hurt when she walks over them. She gathered fruits and tubers from the jungle trees and plants and kept them by every day, for no one knew when Rama will arrive! And, she took no risks. She tasted every fruit, whether it was bitter, sour or sweet, so that Rama could eat the best. She smoothed the surface of all stones that lay by the side of the tracks in the jungle for, she expected Rama, Lakshmana or Sita to sit upon any one of them when they got tired of walking. She hoped that one of them would rest awhile on one of the rocks she had polished with great care. Thus her heart became Rama-hridaya!

Sabari was so immersed in Rama that the ascetics lost all awareness of her sex; they allowed her to remain in the hermitage, after Matanga related to them the high level of her Sadhana. Matanga also left this body and gave away his hermitage to Sabari, saying, “You alone deserve to be here when Rama arrives!”

The Sadhana Sabari did to earn the bliss of serving Rama, you can do, when you serve Sai Rama in the poor. By this service, you realise the Self as Rama.

The five elements and their permutations and combinations constitute the Universe. Earth is the grossest, and has the highest number of characteristics. It has its own smell as well as the characteristics of touch, taste, form and sound (Gandha, Sparsha, Rasa, Rupa and Sabdha). The next element is Water, which is subtler than the earth and has only – taste, touch and form. The next element, Fire is subtler still and has sound and touch. The element Air is even subtler and has touch as its special attribute and sound as another predominant characteristic. The most subtle and pervasive element, Sky or Ether has only one characteristic, sound. God is subtler than all the above and so He is all-pervading, even more than ether or anything more pervasive than that. His nature is beyond all human vocabulary, beyond all human mathematics. Have this conviction well stabilised in your intellect.

Normally human beings are classified as men and women. In some houses, people do not
like female child either based on the financial commitment or do not want to take upon any
burden during the course of their growth. Is it possible to decide to exchange the birth of
male or female child, though scientific developments have scaled to a higher plane. One
can not decide based upon their personal wish or desire. Numerical calculations, normally,
do not go the way one desires. Hence the sex is desired by the Supreme Power and it is
absolute and is not a matter of choice. Therefore it is an undeniable fact that no matter
howsoever a person may be great financially, economically, etc and he/she can only destroy
the fetus, if their desire is not fulfilled. Therefore, whether one is born as female or male,
one has certain duties to be fulfilled while existing in this Universe. One may say or ask
where is the God and show me, etc. But for his blessings we are not born on this earth.
Therefore, one without wasting time in searching the origin of Supreme Power, etc. one
has to do sincere prayer or worship for the well being of everyone in this Universe.
Therefore, human being is composed of man and woman and hence the Supreme Power
also has taken different Avatars to show us the path in the life.

In our lives, when there is a difference of opinion between a wife and husband, if one is patient when the other is in a bad mood, there is no chance of fights breaking out at all.

This will definitely help in controlling the situation. Happiness and peace in a family will rule only when the lady of the home is happy and it is the duty of all the other members of the home, be it the husband or the children to bring in this atmosphere by reducing the amount of tension, and stress to the lady of the home.

Marriage is basically a matter of understanding each other and nothing more than that.

Those who are trying to build the human community on the foundation of wealth (dhana) are like builders using sand as their foundation. Those who seek to build it on the rock of righteousness (Dharma) are the wise ones. Always remember that righteousness is the very root of this world. (Dharma Moolam Idham Jagath).

Those who practice evil are cowards, they will constantly be haunted by fear and have no peace within them. Practice righteousness and you will remain happy forever. Respect for the parents who brought you into this world is the first lesson in right conduct. And gratitude is the spring which feeds that respect.

Do not be carried away by the modern day talk of establishing absolute equality. Each one has a certain corpus of intelligence and a peculiar bundle of instincts, impulses and past impressions (vasanas). The more you divert or diminish their impact on you, greater the achievements. Use all chances you have to develop good health, skills and character. That is your highest duty. Seize every chance to serve the sick and needy with love. Do not by any action of yours, cause pain to another, nor suffer pain yourself by foolishness or sheer bravado. Make lasting friendships with good and the noble. Honour elders and women. Treat women with the highest respect. By honouring women, you bring honour to yourself and your society. Respect for women is the mark of real culture.

For some acquiring divine power may sound ridiculous and it may appear as to how
it is possible. It is an armour to protect a human life from various entanglements and
problems that may arise on account of ignorance of divine power. One need not have
to do miracles but at least one would become humanistic if he/she is aware of the
concept of divine power. One need not have to interpret in any other terms like
delegation of powers similar to corporate agencies. One has to concentrate on
actuality of the divine power dismantling unwanted thoughts and deeds in one's life.
One has to believe in equipping it with so many divine deeds with sincere persuasion
rather than wasting time in deliberation of materialization. If one is committed in
doing such acts, he/she would automatically acquire the divine power without any
ambiguity or doubt. One can buy anything in life and divine power cannot be bought
just like that without the blessings of the Supreme Power. Divine power can determine
a person's fate and can save a human being from any oncoming problems. There are
many types of divine education but one has to pay attention sincerely to acquire
that. Accomplishing that during the lifetime of a person will be a great boon and it
will certainly play a life lasting significant role if one is dedicated, sincere and concentrates
only on the Supreme Power, without whose blessings it can never be possible to stand even
under its shadow.

Sense-control will guard you against a host of evils. Do not believe that because you are equipped with the senses nothing harmful can happen through their free exercise. You may have your car registered in your own name and be driving it yourself, but if you do not apply the brakes timely, accidents are bound to be your lot. Your body can be compared to a car. Your eyes are like the lights; your stomach, the petrol tank; your mouth, the horn; your mind, the steering wheel; dharma (right action), artha (wealth), kaama (desire) and moksha (liberation) , the wheels; the air within the tyres is faith and intelligence, buddhi (intellect) , the switch.

THE airplane has to land at a certain place in order to take in those who have reserved the right to fly by the tickets that they have purchased. So too the Lord has to come down so that those who have won the right to be liberated may be saved. Incidentally, others too will know of the Lord, of His Grace and ways of winning it and of the joy of liberation.

Pearls collected from the "Sai Ocean of Love"

Of late, everyone is living in a busy schedule where one is unable to devote
some time daily towards spiritual activities. God has created us in this Universe
and it is our duty to spend some time daily to understand HIS unparalleled power
over the present day busy schedule and commitments. We must spend atleast
a few minutes daily to go through the scriptures to get an awareness of HIS
immense powers. One must join the Satsangh to promote one's knowlege of
spiritual activities and its growth, develop multi-sensory approaches in
learning the divine power besides developing a language and communication
skill as to how to do prayer, bhajan, meditation, japa, etc and also develop
thinking skills to know the reasons for changes in our life; as learning how to grow
spiritually is a life-long journey and it does not end overnight. One can
get guidance from the Seniors and Scholars in forming divine thoughts, words
and deeds too. If one has to attain the fruits of the Spiritual love, joy, peace,
etc., one has to have complete faith/trust, confidence, etc besides self-control.
If one starts loving the divine power with self control, then one can become
rest assured that the development of spiritual growth is taking its root in one's
life. For this, as Baba says, one has to do daily Meditation, Japa, Dhyanam, Nama
likitha, Namasmaran, Bhajans, etc.

[TD]The Tripura Rahasya contains a section called Sri Vidya Gita, which is a proper subject for study, during the Navaratri, when Tripura Sundari, the Goddess Shakti or Maya or Kali or Saraswati is being worshipped and meditated upon by all ardent aspirants. The Gita is in the form of a story: Once upon a time, a distinguished galaxy of sages assembled in Brahmaloka. Each one of them held forth loud and long on his own system, with the courage of conviction and declared that it was the best. This led to great confusion and they could not all agree upon the system that was the best. So, they prayed to the Goddess Tripura to solve their problem. When The Goddess manifested Herself before them, they asked Her, "What is the proper and perfect means of attaining Thee? What is the nature and result of this attainment? Who is the best among the sages who have accomplished The Goal?"
The answer given contains the cream of the highest gains of Indian philosophy. “I am the ABSTRACT Intelligence, wherefrom the Cosmos originates, whereon it flourishes, wherein it resolves. The ignorant call Me, Prakriti, or the. Gross Universe, the wise know Me, as their own pure Being, the `I' within. Being non-dual and Abstract Intelligence, I spontaneously manifest as the minutest particle in the universe as well as the universe itself. I manifest in diverse ways; but, I Am unblemished, for I Am Absolute. Though I Am the abode of all and immanent in all, I remain pure.
I wield My Maya and I play in it. I become covered with ignorance; I appear full of desires; I seek their fulfillment and appear happy or miserable; I project favourable or unfavourable environments; I appear to be born again and again; I learn the Truth and get absolved. This manifestation as the ignorant and the bound is called Creation. Supreme Wisdom is the state devoid of thoughts, will and desire and is unimpeded by ignorance. Non-dual consciousness is the state of emancipation. Emancipation is eternal and therefore, here and now; it is not a state to be acquired.
If the longing for becoming aware of emancipation is intense and unwavering, you will succeed. Three evil propensities that befoul the intellect have to be overcome: (i) want of faith in the Sastras and the Guru (ii) addiction to desires and (iii) dullness. Believe firmly, convince yourself by correct logic, develop dispassion, and to overcome dullness, practise adoration, prayer, meditation so that you may win Divine Grace. He who unreservedly surrenders himself to Me, with devotion, is endowed with all the requisites necessary for the Realisation of the Self, that is to say, Me.
You ask Me who among you is the best. Well, He who has one-pointed devotion to God is the best of aspirants, because his dullness will disappear through Grace. But, the one devoted to Abstract Consciousness excels every other seeker. Some sages, like Janaka, abide as the Self, even while engaged in complex duties. Though engaged in work, if a person does not look upon anything as non-self, he is a perfect sage. The best among the sages is never out of samadhi, be he working or idle. He is not influenced by happiness or misery, by pleasure or pain, nor by fear or doubt or desire. He feels himself pervading all, as all. He is at peace, he is aware that all dualities are in the Self and of the Self. He feels this continuously and spontaneously. Such a one is the best among you. This is called Vidya Gita, because Tripura, or She Who presides over the three Puras, cities that is to say, the gross, subtle and karana-sariras or bodies, is V idya or the Highest Wisdom Itself.
In the Devi Mahatmya, the Goddess is described, "Sarvasya buddhi rupena, Janasya hrdi samsthithe!" "She who is in every being as Buddhi or Intelligence." She is Mahavidya, Mahavani, Bharathi, Vaak Saraswati. She promotes, confers, directs, intelligence. She Who confers liberation through Intelligence and removes the fog of delusion from the inner eye is worshipped, adored and propitiated. May Intelligence grow, May Ignorance vanish, May all of us, through the Grace of Mother Sai be released from bondage to the senses and bondage to the temporary and the tawdry.

The Rama principle (Thathwa) is laden with many subtle secrets. The Rama story is of exemplary excellence ethically, spiritually and materially as well. Rama was the embodiment of the four cardinal principles: truth, righteousness, love, and peace. The story of Rama teaches us how one should live in the world and conduct himself in the family as well as in society. It also teaches us how one should retain one’s individuality and shape one’s personality. Only when we shape ourselves into a strong personality can we conduct ourselves ideally in the family and in society. He also enshrined in Himself the principles of equanimity, unity and bliss. This principle of bliss is latent in every human heart. Understand and internalize that each and every one of you have a right to realise and enjoy this principle of bliss, which is the real Rama Thathwa.

One hears through Pravachanam that chanting Rama Namam is sweeter than the
sugar and honey. As one goes on repeating the Nama of Shri Rama, it is said to be
the tastes of nectar. Hence one should repeat the Rama Namam as frequently as
possible to attain the Moksha. For e.g. we have Ratnakar, a dacoit, who later became
Shri Valmekhi and wrote the great epic Ramayana in Sanskrit. Therefore one should
try to chant Rama Namam with complete heart and sincerity. As Baba says if one
understands the Tathawam of Rama Namam will never fail to get the bliss of the Supreme
Power. Everyone knows that the story of Shri Rama was written thousands of years ago
and yet the inner story of Rama is still being enacted even today in every moment of one's
life to maintain the great and unparalleled examples of Rama Tathawam. Therefore, if
one keeps the mind away from delusions of the Universe and gets continuously engaged
in the thought of the Supreme Power, would be able to see the light of the Supreme Power
and may not get entangled in joy or grief. One has to keep the mind clear with self-control
always and contemplate in the Rama Namam. Everyone knows that to get the grace of the
Supreme Power is very difficult. If one has to earn that one has to do dedicated Sadhana
by different means.

Explanation by Swami Chinmayananda.

25. The worshippers of the
DEVAS or gods go to the DEVAS; to the PITRIS or ancestors go the ancestor-worshippers; to the BHUTAS or the elements go worshippers of the BHUTAS; but My worshippers come unto Me.

It is the law-of-life that as you think so you become. The thoughts entertained at a given moment get crystallised to form a blue-print for the individual’s character formation in days to come. This is a fact, very well realisable by everyone in his own life. Applying this natural law of psychology in the field of spiritual self-development, Lord Krishna says: “VOTARIES OF THE DEVAS GO TO THE DEVAS,” etc. The worshippers of the Devas, ancestors (Pitris), and the elements (Bhutas), as a result of their worship and adoration with single-pointed mind for a sufficiently long time, come to attain the desires of their constant meditation.

Devas, we have seen, represent the various sense-organs, through which we experience the world. To indicate the work done, by the term denoting the instrument with which the work is executed, is quite common in life. To axe, to scissor, to knife, to hammer, to steer, to pen, etc., are examples wherein the name of the instrument is employed to indicate the work done with it. Similarly, here also, the plural noun ‘Devas,’ may be taken to mean “the entire field of all physical experiences.” Those who are courting the external world of joys and successes consistently and with the required amount of devotion, come to gain that field of demanded experiences.

Accepting the term ‘Pitri’ as denoting the ‘ancestors,’ ‘votaries of ancestors’ would mean ‘persons who are enthusiastically alive to the cultural purity and tradition of their ancients, and who are striving to live up to those ideals.’ An individual, who is constantly endeavouring to live up to the ancient cultural tradition of spiritual India, as a result of his constant self-application, comes to gain the beauty and the shine of the exquisite life of purity and perfection.

The ancient Seers of our land did not overlook the fact that, apart from the spiritual aims, in any society, there would also be active scientific enquiries and repeated discoveries that were possible among the folds of Mother Nature’s own garments. The active quest in the field of “objective-sciences” is a part of man’s hunt for knowledge, and therefore, the “worshippers of the Bhutas,” are the secular scientists who try to observe, codify and systematize the observed knowledge of physical nature and behaviour of things and beings as it is now done under such classifications as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Zoology, Botany, Engineering, Agriculture, Politics, Sociology, Geography, History, Geology, and so on --- an endless array of specialised lines of investigation, adopted, pursued and accepted by the modern world. A large portion of the Atharvana Veda gave us the accepted theories of nature and its behaviour, as finally conceived of by the Rishis of that time. The psychological theory, which Krishna is observing here, is applicable to all branches of human endeavour --- that is, if one were to pursue diligently even in the secular field, success would be assured in direct proportion to the amount of self-application put forth by the seeker.

Thus, if consistency of meditation upon the Devas yields the Devas; if constant meditation upon the “ancestors” takes us to our ancestral heritage; and if diligent self-application in the fields of intellectual enquiry (Bhutas) can ultimately assure us a positive success in ripping open the secret vaults of nature --- then, according to the same principle, we are assured that, “MY VOTARIES COME UNTO ME.” By constant meditation, with a single-pointed mind, upon the nature of the Self, the meditator can, in the long run, successfully discover his total identity with the Self, Eternal and Immutable. In our elementary text-books on Vedanta, this technique of the ego’s constant meditation on the Self and its ultimate transformation into the Divine Self, has been indicated by comparing it with the manner in which a “worm” is transformed into a wasp.

The attempt of the Geeta is to give, not only the Jnana but also to supply the Vijnana. In order to convince the student that this elementary technique can take the seeker to the highest achievements, this stanza is given. Just as consistent pursuit with all dedicated self-application brings, in the end, sure success in all fields of activity of art or science, so too, in the realm of the “within,” and ultimately in the field of spiritual achievement, constant meditation will definitely pay. The logic behind this assurance is given here by the Lord.

CAN MERE WORSHIP WITH DEVOTED THOUGHTS, HOWEVER SINCERE, BRING ABOUT SUCH AN ABSOLUTE SUCCESS? IS IT NOT NECESSARY THAT WE SHOULD PURSUE ALL THE ELABORATE RITUALS THAT THE VEDAS PRESCRIBE, AND OFTEN SEEM TO INSIST UPON?

The present day life style is very hectic and people have no time for elaborate spiritual practices. It seems that Gods had foreseen this eventuality.

In the Vishnu Sahasra Nama, Mother Parvathi asks this question to Lord Maheswara:

Kēnōpāyēna laghunā viṣhṇōrnāmasahasrakam |
paṭhyatē paṁḍitairnityaṁ śrōtumicchāmyahaṁ prabhō || 26 ||

Parvathi said:

I am desirous to know oh Lord,
How the scholars of this world,
Will chant without fail,
These thousand names,
By a method that is easy and quick. (Laguna means easy way).

Lord Maheswara replies,

“Srīrāma rāma rāmēti ramē rāmē manōramē |
sahasranāmatattulyaṁ rāmanāma varānanē ||

Lord Shiva said:
By chanting Rama Rama and Rama,
Chanting of the name Rama ,
Is equivalent to chanting the thousand names!

Rama is the embodiment of Dharma (Righteousness), which is the basis for the entire Universe. However deep and great our scholastic eminence or wealth may be, this birth is of no use without the transformation of the mind. Merely repeating Rama’s name is inadequate without realising the Rama Thathwa (Principle). A true human being is one who consistently practices the principle of dharma. Burning is the dharma of fire. Coolness is the dharma of ice. Fire is no fire without burning. Similarly the dharma of man lies in performing actions with the body, following the commands of the heart, deeply rooted in Divine Love. Every act performed with thought, word, and deed in harmony is an act of dharma. From today, emulate Rama in your daily life and transform yourself by following the path of Love.
