It was on the 5th May 1974, that I was proceeding by car from Arusha, in Tanzania, East Africa, to Machame Hospital, to attend to a patient, whose condition was reported to be rather serious. My wife and two other ladies were seated at the back; I sat beside the driver. We had hardly travelled about five miles beyond Arusha, when a truck with a trailer attached was seen coming fast from the opposite direction. In about thirty seconds, we would have crossed each other safely. But, suddenly, the heavily loaded trailer got detached, and came towards us, like a demon determined to destroy us. There was no method of stopping it or slowing it or diverting it.

The truck sped on, without its driver knowing that the trailer had got loose. On our right was the truck and on our left was a huge boulder, rising twenty feet from the ground. And, right in front was the demon of a loaded trailer intent on smashing our car. My driver tried his best to avoid the collision and save us and the 'Cortina'. As soon as the truck was by-passed, the driver turned "in between the truck and the trailer," and he was able to save his side of the car as well as the back portion. But, unfortunately, the side on which I was sitting was hit and shattered badly. The front wheel of the car was pushed by the impact of the hit right up to the front seat; as a result, my right leg went under the seat and suffered multiple compound fractures below the knee, with five fragments. There was a dislocation of the left hip joint. The dashboard pressed the front of my chest and my head was crushed between the upper and lower edges of th e window. There was no pulsation; breathing stopped. People gathered round and wailed in great grief, "Poor Doctor! What a death! who can counter the Will of God?"

I felt that I was alive and that I was in Prasanthi Nilayam. Baba whispered to me in a low voice, —I wondered why He whispered to me like that—"Get up; otherwise your leg will be no more!" I called out, "Baba! Baba!" and when the people around me heard the voice, they realised with a shock that I was still alive. They started pulling the car from underneath the giant trailer.

Just at that moment, they heard the shout, "Kiswahili", above the din. Two hefty looking Africans appeared and shouted Kiswahili meaning, 'make way' "Allow us to get this doctor out," they said. They kept all else at a distance and took entire charge of the salvage operation. We will get this doctor out, they seemed to say. They used their physical strength to cut open the window, push back the dash board, and remove the plate under which the right leg was stuck. They kept the jack underneath the seat and pulled it behind. Meanwhile I gained a little consciousness when they touched the body and handled it in various ways. I asked for water, and when it was offered, I could sip a few drops only with great difficulty. Then, I became unconscious again.

People told me later that the two Africans struggled for over an hour and a half, to get my body out of the damaged car and put it in the ambulance van. As soon as that was done, they disappeared and no body knew who they were. They have not been seen all these years. If they had been 'real', they would certainly have come to Arusha, in anticipation of some recognition of the timely and invaluable help rendered.
I was at Whitefield, near Bangalore, at Brindavan, on 19th and 20th April '78 where Baba was staying. I still had to use a stick while walking and climbing steps. Baba called me twice for interviews with Him. He said He was aware of the accident. "Your spinal cord was completely crushed, I had to come in the form of two Africans, to give you a new life. Your wife was surprised when she was dragged aside. I assured her that she need not worry about you."

In His unbounded Love, He removed the defect from the right leg, which necessitated the use of the stick, by Himself rubbing over the right knee joint with Vibhuti created by Him. I could thereafter walk and climb steps, as before the accident.

The above narration is very thrilling and unimaginable as to how he survived but for Baba's miracle
in the form of South Africans. HE is always there where people call HIM with complete faith and
devotion to HIM. Sai Ram.

You should cultivate an attitude of inseparable attachment to the Lord, Who is your very Self. If He be a flower, consider yourself a bee that savours its honey; if He is a tree, be a creeper that clings to it; if a cliff, then feel that you are a cascade running over it; if He is the sky, be a tiny star that twinkles in it. Above all, be conscious of the truth that you and He are bound by Supreme Love. If you feel this acutely, with subtle intelligence, then the journey will be quick and the goal can be achieved. There is a difference between subtle and gross intelligence. Sthula buddhi(external knowledge or gross intelligence) keeps you walking, but the subtle intelligence will make you fly to your destination. The gross is too much tied to body consciousness where as the subtle transcends the body and will lighten your burden.

Body consciousness is nothing but a reality which happens around us and which we feel ourselves.
We see with the parts of our body like eyes, we hear with our ears and we smell with our nose and so
on and so forth. Body, in other words, is a vehicle for us, made use of by our sense organs for these
activities. For e.g. We do Aasana as a part of yoga practice. We know the performance of Aasana
is related to the activity of our senses. Yet another thing is, Pranaayaama, to restrain or exercise a
sort of control in us, which is linked to body consciousness. Sometimes, we get emotional attachments,
which without our knowledge at times leads towards the Maya, which purports or results in misdeeds.
So there is a need to question our subtle intelligence or the senses we have, why God has given us the mind,
intelligence and sense organs. No doubt loads of stress come from works or deep thinking. Here, we have
to look for the ability that is in us to cultivate an attitude to lighten our mental burden and seek His blessings
like a creeper that clings to a tree, as Baba has taught us.

Right Conduct (Dharma) is the quality which makes a human out of an animal. This Sahajadharma (natural conduct) of human beings has been overpowered in course of time; those who supported and encouraged it, and derived joy from it have declined in numbers. This is akin to the weed overpowering the crop. So the 'establishment of Dharma' is a matter of weeding of the field! In this iron age (Kaliyuga),Dharma has been reduced to mere words. Dharma is not manipulation of words. "Sathyam Vada, Dharmam Chara" (Speak Truth and Practice Righteousness) - has been the clarion call of the Upanishads, the repositories of Indian culture. However in the present times, "Dharmam vada," (Speak about Right Conduct) has become the order of the day! That is the first step in th e decline of Dharma! Know that that which is not practised cannot possess strength. Understand this truth and practise Dharma in your lives.

If a person lets his heart and mind get occupied with unwanted things, he either fails to adhere to the
right permissible conduct or fails to observe the purity in thought, he indirectly gives a proof that God does
not live in his heart from the outwardly thoughts that comes out from his heart or by his deeds. There is a
saying that a good and pure thought transfers into an excellent act and in turn that again forms into an
appreciable habit and character. Thus, we must always strive to put a full stop to all obscene suggestions,
gestures, languages, story books, pictures, etc. which are likely to corrupt our mind. When you do something
good for another person, which he or she does not expect, you will find that your spirit gets refreshed.
Further, we must resist temptation for things which are not observable or indistinct leading to impurity in
thought and action. Good thoughts and behaviour will certainly move us towards peace of mind,
personal purity, etc besides possibility of securing the grace of God. Sai Ram. Baba is a beacon to us.

The One God is the inner motivator (Sarvaantharyaami) of all beings. If He is within all, why is He not visible to all, you may ask. Let me give you an example. Picture a rosary of different types of beads: coral, pearl, tulasi, rudraaksha, crystal, conch, etc. The string passes through each rosary and holds all the beads together but it is visible only in the transparent beads. So too, you have to make yourself transparent, free from wish and will, that hide and befogs the Lord Within. Then you can see the Inner Motivator. To earn this transparency, purity of intention, impulse and instinct is essential. You can achieve it by systematic and sincere spiritual discipline. A ladder has to be as tall as the height you want to reach. So too, your spiritual practices (sadhana) has to be pursued till you experience Him.

Sadhana is nothing but a daily spiritual practice. We can say that it is a tool
for us to work on ourselves, to attain the purpose of our life. It can be
exercises viz. Yoga, Meditation, Chanting of Gods Name, Slokas and Prayer, etc.
We call it in Tamil Abhyasam. The person who does Sadhana is known as
Sadhaka. Normally, we must learn from a Guru who teaches all the methods
of Sadhana for doing it procedurally. If we are unable to do it individually
ourselves or individualism is unable to fetch the result, we can enrol ourselves
in a Satsang or join Meditation Camps or Samasti Group Prayers (normally all Sai Bhajans
are done on Thursday evenings in the Samiti) like Nama Sangeerthanams, etc.
By these deeds, we will be able to attain faster spiritual feelings and owing to
group participation under one umbrella, our personality defects too get erased
even without our knowledge. As Baba says, Sadhana is a tool like a Ladder to
go near HIM. Many people take Deeksha and do Japa daily by using Rudraksha
Mala, which enables one to concentrate on HIM slowly and slowly. I have taken
Siva Deeksha through Dharma Paripalana Sabha under His Holiness Paramapoojya
Srimad Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Swayamprakasa Sri Sachidananda Saraswati
Mahaswamji of Sri Adhishankaracharya Sharada Lakshmi Narasimha Peetam, Sree

A crocodile's strength depends on it being in water; the strength of Dharma (Right Conduct) depends on it being practised. Dharma will be weak when it is taken out of practice and thrown on the sands of words. Sathya is a matter of speech and it gets strength when it is consistently practised. The term ‘Strength’ here has two meanings: Animal (Asuric) strength and Dharmic strength. In the epic Mahabharatha, Bhima (the second of the five Pandava brothers) had physical strength, but as his elder brother Dharmaja was by his side, Bhima's strength becameDharmic. The Pandavas were saved by their adherence toDharma! But for their right conduct, they would have suffered defeat right in the very beginning. And why did the Kauravas (the hundred brothers whom the Pandavas fought aga inst) lose in spite of their undoubted strength? They lackedDharmic strength. All that they could rely on was sheer animal strength.

Dharma is the path of doing what is morally right, justifiable and
leading a life according to the codes of conduct as outlined in the
Hindu Scriptures. Dharma, in other words, is the moral law mixed
together with spiritual discipline that conducts our life. In fact it is
foundation of life. It can also be defined as "to achieve a good karma,
it is imperative to lead a life in accordance with the Dharma or what
is right".

Right conduct is the Dharmic strength as Baba preaches us.

From the reign of adharma (unrighteousness), the world has to enter the era of Dharma (righteousness). Special effort is called for when you cultivate a crop; no effort is necessary when weeds and wild grass are allowed to grow. The valuable crop of Sahajadharma (innate righteousness) has to be cultivated with all care and attention. WhenDharma is practised, adharma will decline by itself. No special exertion is needed for its removal. Dharma, since it is associated with truth, is indestructible. To make theDharma that has become hidden, visible once again, its practice must be intensified. That is Dharmasthaapana(establishing righteousness). Using Arjuna as an instrument, Lord Krishna brought to light the codes of conduct and modes of thought which were laid down from the ver y beginning and revived their practice. This is not work that can be carried out by ordinary men. So the universal Lord Himself assumed the task and instructed the world through Arjuna.

The “Big City” Which Is Hinduism

Swami Nirmalananda Giri
gopurams.jpg
Q:In Gaudiya and other Vaishnava traditions, the view seems to be that the devoted bhakta eventually goes to Vaikuntha to be eternally with the Lord, whereas they believe the lesser, advaita way of doing things will leave the advaitin to merge with “the void/Brahman” instead of enjoying Vaikuntha.
On the other hand, Advaita Vedanta seems to advocate that all will essentially merge with Brahman, regardless of the path. Could you help explain your views on all this? I am feeling somewhat lost in the big city that Hinduism can be.

You are right, Hinduism is “the big city,” but that is because it is all-embracing. Every possible truth and view of that truth was long ago set forth by the sages of India. However in contemporary India we can find a lot of errant nonsense, for some parts of the big city have become slums and others are really outside the city limits even if they appear to be inside.
The truth as set forth in the upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita is the same: the goal of the individual is to unite with Brahman the Absolute. Then, like Brahman they can do/be whatever they like. Just as Brahman is both with and without qualities and both with and without form, so they can be. To say that one is superior or more ultimate than the other is to miss the point: Brahman is beyond such distinctions, for Brahman is absolutely ONE. In fact, Brahman transcends anything that can be said about It. The wise seek the Goal and leave the talk to others. As they say in the American South: “The empty wagon rattles the most.”

The upanishads and Gita affirm the eternal, divine nature of the atman-self. It, too, is part of Brahman. This perspective is essential to right understanding of any philosophical point.

You mention both the personal, and impersonal aspects of God in an article. You say that since Brahman can manifest as the transient universe, then obviously he can manifest as a deity (according to the particular devotee) as well. I certainly agree with you. My only thing is, the existence of the personal god in that way seems dependent upon an individual to perceive and need such a thing.

Again, remember that Brahman and the jiva are really one and inseparable and in a sense interdependent. Consequently as the jiva moves toward the Goal, whatever it needs will come to it or arise in its consciousness.

Are paths like bhakti and the impersonal advaitic path of yoga and meditation, equal? Do they all lead to the same thing?

Certainly, because there is only the One to realize. The Bhagavad Gita affirms this unequivocally.

Are a personal god and the impersonal brahman on the same level, or is one more ultimate than the other?

There is only The One. Our distinctions rise from our limited, unenlightened consciousness.
“Therefore, become a yogi” (Bhagavad Gita 6:46).

In accordance with our hindu tradition, it can seen from Vaishnavism, Ahimsaa means
not only the non-killing of animals for sacrifice, but also it means not hurting or
injuring anyone by thought, word and deed. It is the basis of genuine moral life.
It can be seen from the Bhagavad Gitaa, which states that a perfect Yogi is one who sees
equality of others with oneself (Aatma-anupamya). Just as he desires good to himself
he desires good to all.

Suppose, if we desire to go to a place, from one place to another, let us
think for a moment. If someone knows the route, he/she can tell us. Even
then, it is perhaps possible, only if the landscape remains unchangeable.
Each and every event is a culmination of innumerable events. For e.g.
our birth and starting from the birth of our parents and so on. Even the
best laid out plans of the most authentic and intelligent persons too, sometimes
turn to dust. At times, we take shelter behind the concept of fate and
blame it on our Karma. Whatever, it is, the Law of Karma. Coming to
Astrology, it is considered as a Science. Astrology also sometimes fail.
What we need is self-realization towards God, why we can term it too
as self-actualization, we have to actuate ourselves to the good thinking,
good deeds, dharma without a wavering mind, as we can not otherwise
break it from the relentless cycle of birth and death. We must aim at
the realisation of supreme power and do our duties.

Gayathri, according to our Puranas, is termed as Vedasaraa and it is
sacred mantra. Gayathri is the Mother of Vedas. If we regularly chant
all the three times in a day at an appropriate time, we will get spiritual
wisdom. As a result of chanting, we get relieved from diseases, our
misery will slowly vanish, our desires coming to a fruitful result and above
all we can attain peace of mind besides dispelling the darkness of ignorance
in us. It is a very powerful mantra and any body can chant it with a proper
accent.

Be silent yourself; that will induce silence in others. Do not fall into the habit of shouting, talking loudly or for long. Reduce contacts to the minimum. Carry with you an atmosphere of quiet contemplation, wherever you happen to be. There are some who live in a perpetual tornado of noise. Whether they are in an exhibition, a fair, a hotel, a temple or even in Prashanthi Nilayam; their wagging tongues do not stop. Such people will not proceed far on the Godward path. There are others who relish disputes and arguments; they are never content with obvious facts; they must create doubts where none existed before, and shake faith. They dispute whether Rama is superior to Krishna, or whether Krishna is a fuller incarnation of Godhead! These thoughts are not helpful either, for a spiritual aspirant. Winnow the real from the apparent. Look inward for the kerne l, the meaning and purpose of life.

Avatara Purushas (divine advents) have no merit or demerit accumulated in former births, unlike ordinary mortals. They do not have any balances to pay off in a birth. Theirs is a Leela(divine play), a birth taken on. The goodness of the good and the wickedness of the bad provide reasons for an Avatar of the Lord. As a result of the advent of the Lord, the good will be happy and the bad will suffer. The Avatar, however has no joy or grief, even when enveloped in the body assumed. TheAvatar is not constituted of the five elements; it is chinmayanot mrinmaya - spiritual not material; it can never be disturbed by egoism or the sense of ‘mine’ and ‘thine’; it is untouched by the delusion born of ignorance. Though men may mistake anAvatar as just human, that does not a ffect the Avatar’s nature; an Avatar comes for a task and is always bound to accomplish it.

The task of every Avatar has been to protect the sadhus, punish the wicked and support right conduct (Dharma). By sadhus, I do not mean monks and ascetics alone, as it is generally understood. It means the ones who practice goodness, uprightness and virtue (sadhu-guna). Note that these can be possessed by animals and even insects. The promotion of Sathwa guna (purity) is the best means of fostering sadhus. Being the embodiment of this sacred Guna, the Avatar fosters it wherever people practising virtues are found. Sadhu also implies those persons who do not swerve from their duty, whatever be the temptation or threat. All those who follow right conduct (Sadachara), who are virtuous (Sadsheela), who adhere to truth (Sathya), who yearn for the Divine pre sence (Sannidhi) of the Lord (Sarveswara), who observe Sad-dharma, who consider all (Sarvajana) as equal (Samaana); all of them are dear to Me and deserve My special attention.

Service to your fellow beings is more needed than service to the Lord. In fact, serving a person is equal to serving the Lord Himself. That is the path of true devotion. For what greater means can there be to please God than that of pleasing His children? The scripture Purusha Suktha describes God as having a thousand heads, eyes and feet. That is to say, every living being is God. Though there is a mention of a thousand heads, there is no mention of a thousand hearts, there is only one heart. The same blood circulates through all the heads, eyes, feet and limbs. When you tend to the limb, you tend to the individual. When you serve a human being, you serve God. When your goal is to serve and adore God, every step will yield you a spring of joy, and every moment, every opportunity is a valuable gift from Him.
