DEVI BHAAGAVATAM - SKANDA 11
11#15a. Rules for applying Vibhooti
All the KarmAs done without applying Vibhooti on the forehead go in waste. The real hallmarks of a brahmin are the Gayatree mantra and the smearing of Vibhooti. Every Brahmin must be adorned by the bright Vibhooti applied with the uttering of the mantras.
A brahmin must develop a liking to Vibhooti even as he looks at it. The brahminwho does not have a liking for Vibhooti is actually a ChaNdALan!
One must not eat without applying Vihooti. Even the tulAbhAram measured with gold will go in waste if Vibhooti is not smeared.
Often the utthareeyam - the upper garment - is twisted and worn as a poonool to make sure that it does not get displaced during the ceremony ritual. But there is no alternative for Vibhooti. There can be no alternative for Vibhooti.
Vibhooti must be applied with the three fingers of the right hand - excepting the thumb and the little finger. The length of the three lines must be at least six inches.
The line drawn by the ring finger (AnAmika) is the 'AkAram'. The line drawn by the middle finger (Madhyamai) is the 'UkAram' and the line drawn by the index finger is the 'MakAram'.
The three lines are the swaroopams of the three gunAs and these are three component sounds in the PraNava OnkAram.
