My kind advice to Mr. Kailash Krishnan is, do not aspire to convert to brahmin just because you desperately want to marry this iyengar girl who seems to love her iyengarism than you. perhaps you are infatuated with this iyengar girl. does she truly love you? if yes, she would marry you regardless of her parents' acceptance. if she would marry conditionally, i.e. only if her parents would agree, then you may conclude, her love for you is not genuine. if she does not love you more than her iyengar caste or parents, then i advise you may better forget her, overcome your infatuation for her, seek out a girl who loves you genuinely and marry her. My best wishes.

Interesting topic, .............It seems some other community members were also using the surname "Ayyangar".
Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.

In Karnataka, you will find numerous 'Bangalore Iyengar Bakery'. The term Iyengar is used to mean they are vegetarian bakeries where egg is not used in any baked product. Most of the bakery owners are kannada-speaking non-brahmins.

No. Samashrayanam is not acceptable by any sects of Iyengars.

vgane ji,

Dont go by what Christians wearing the "Once I was Iyengar" label tell you here about Iyengars.

Samashrayanam is accepted and followed by all Iyengars-by both kalais. Most of the Iyengars whom you meet in your lifetime are people who have gone through this ritual. Every year the Vaishnavite Acharyas conduct this ritual for their sishyas any number of times. Without undergoing this ritual a Vaishnavite does not become eligible to do even sradhdham for his pitrs.

I would request people who know very little about Vaishnavites or their practices (despite they having been a vaishnavite once upon a time before embracing an Abrahamic outfit) to keep their mouth shut because they are making an.........of themselves by writing utter nonsense here. Already they have revealed their ignorance by writing about Nammazhwar once. LOL.

Vaagmiji,
I will take your words on the Vaisnava Practice, and I too know that lot my iyaangar friends have done this practice.
My question was about the so called "converted Iyyangars" being accepted by the born Brahmin family accepting this person in their community. I am not talking about religion or spiritual evolution of the individual, I am purely talking of social conversion.

Samasrayanam is not making one a brahmin. It is just making you a Vaishnavite. You may be a brahmin or a NB and yet not be a vaishnavite. This ritual formally makes you a vaishnavite. So if the idea is to marry a brahmin girl by undergoing samasrayanam it may not help. Samasrayanam will be done to any one (from the NB also) if he comes to a Vaishnavite Acharya and requests for it.

And now about the following quoted advice in post #53:

It bristles with a lot of Male Chauvinism of a weird kind-coming from an apparent woman. Why should a girl not be sincerely in love with a man and yet expect him to become a vaishnavite? She may want her Man to get the benefit of what she got being a vaishnavite. Love is nothing but infatuation made to look different and beautiful with a lot of poetry and sweet nothings added to it. Despite her infatuation for this man if the girl wants this Man to become a vaishnavite, it shows the girl's keeping her balance. It appears she is not swept off her feet by her emotions. It would be good for this man to marry this girl and none else by becoming a Vaishnavite. Some men give a solitaire 1 carrot Diamond to his love and seek her hand, Some men give everything that is precious to them to a girl to marry her, and perhaps it is time a man becomes a vaishnavite to seek the hands of his Love. The advice given in quotes above will make the man stink with male chauvinism. Won't he expect the girl to become a Christian if he is a christian? And the poor girl will convert to Christianity and fry every day half a kilo of odouress fish to satisfy the MCP? She will be, as a matter of right, expected to throw her Akkara Adisil, Puliseri, saattumathu and nekizh karamathu out through the kitchen window in order to accommodate the fish fry, egg omlette, and karuvaattu kuzhambu of her beloved MCP. And what more she would certainly be expected to give up her favourite "வெண்ணை அளைந்த குணுங்கும் விளையாடு புழுதியும் கொண்டு........." with "தேனினிமையிலும் யேசுவின் நாமம் திவ்விய மதுரமாமே அதை தேடியே நாடி ஓடியே வருவீர் திருச்சபையானோரே..........". Lo! what a cultural shock the girl undergoes in order to keep the life going. Poor thing.

So Kailash Krish, if you are a Hindu just go ahead and become a Vaishnavite (that does not make any great difference) and marry your love. Best wishes. Be choosy about taking advices. Avoid advices that come freely from proselytising enthusiasts like plague. LOL.

Please read para 1 of my post # 57. There are no converted Iyengars. There are only vaishnavites who are either born vaishnavites or those who accepted vaishnavam to become vaishnavites.

hi

its looklike BORN AGAIN VAISHNAVAITE.....even though born in iyengar family...they are not vaishnavas.....after samasaryanam....

they are called BORN AGAIN VAISHNAVAS....

Coming back to the op.
How many TN's orthodox Brahmin family is going to accept this "converted" brahmin as authentic brahmin in their family?

Leaving the technicalities of conversion aside, what are the eligibility criteria for conversion to brahmin? Are there any tests? Surely the priest/acharya may refuse to perform the ritual if the shishya is not deserving? We know the poster in is love, but is he deserving of brahmin (or Iyengar) status?

Actually the answer for his conversion is very simple...One should remember that when a Vadakalai views a Thenkalai with suspicion that the Thenakalais were Once Upon Time Non Brahmins converted into Iyengarism...does a Non Brahmin at present think that he can actually convert to Iyengarism?LOL

When the "U" and the "Y" could not see eye to eye and dragged a pachyderm to the legal arena..does any NB expect to be accepted as an Iyengar?? GOVINDA GOOOOOOVINDA!LOL

I thought the wife had to convert to the husband's tribe/caste etc. This must be KaliYuga!

At the beginning of any Lovvu..guys will do anything to get a girl..so its just the initial high of he endorphin -testosterone phase..after all men do not really think with their grey matter isnt it?LOL

Doctor Mam,

One cannot always abide by one’s mind’s decision. He has a heart too with romantic feelings which are strong!!!. Some fall prey to heart’s desire and thus fell in love, leave alone the results which can always be handled nicely using the grey matter.

If everyone started to act as per what his/her mind says, they won’t fell in love and we would not have read about, Laila & Majnu, Romeo & Juliet and Ambigabathi and Amaravathi !!!

Hope the thread opener has acted as per his heart’s desire and feelings. ( May be a bait O.P. too as pointed out by few)

The thread opener who is silent, will have to confirm this? Will he????

How to convert and become a brahmin?

The easiest thing is to convert and become a brahmin though the word "convert" does not really mean anything and is added only as a convenience. There is no national registry of brahmins to verify with and there are no ID cards issued to brahmins. There can be two types of people who want to become brahmin village boy and the citybred. This is for all those who want to become a brahmin.

1. Facts of the situation: Brahmin is just a caste name. They are a microscopic minority in the Hindu community forming hardly 2% of the total population of which they are a part. There is no advantage that accrue to any one by converting to brahmin caste. Rather the person should be willing to lose a lot of benefits that are there for those who are NBs. If you are an NB say a Reddy or a Thevar you have the large number of your community behind you to back you when it comes muscling your way into anything, and when it comes getting a seat in a medical college or Engineering college you can get yourself certified as one of those numerous nomadic Reddy tribes that roam the jungles of Andhra and get preferential treatment and reservation in the selection for a job/promotion or a seat in Engg/Med education. Similarly if you are a Thevar you can get yourself declared as a Kallar and get reservation benefits. To get a certificate from the Tahsildar is very easy and the trick of the trade is known even to a child in the country. There are umpteen other "benefits" in being "backward" because with your muscle power you can just lift any woman from the poor and suppressed dalit community who are ever dependent on your community in the village and after enjoying even hang her from a tree dead. If you want to covert to Brahmin be prepared to lose all these unique advantages because even a begging "gurukkal" brahmin belongs to forward community and is not eligible for any reservation benefits. This brings us to wonder why should one bother to become a brahmin at all. As the OP here says the reason is lovvu. When one is in lovvu he/she does funny things. One of them is perhaps becoming a brahmin. Now how do we deal with this issue. Let us see.

2. back ground of the would be convert: The boy in love who wants to become a brahmin can be either from a village or a City. The person from a city gets the additional benefit of anonymity. While village does not allow you to forget your caste city allows you to just merge in the crowd and lose your caste identity. Now anonymity is very important to wipe out the traces of your ancestry. Let us see how it can be worked to one's advantage.

a) If you are a village boy in lovvu and wants to become a brahmin, make your family create a ruckus and fight with every relative and neighbour in your village. The intensity of the conflict should be so strong that your relatives and neighbours should wish to forget your family for ever. Then dispose of your all properties in the village and move over to a far away city-if in North India it will be all the more preferable-and carefully cut off all contacts with relatives and friends for at least 20 years. Then declare yourself a brahmin. You should have by now given your children the names which sound brahmin like say a Kandasamy can become a Subramanyan, a velu can become an Ashok etc etc.,

b) If you are a city bred already, cultivate the habit of speaking in brahmin language like using special words like peshakkudaathu (not pesakkudaathu) vango and not Vanga, pongo and not ponga etc., etc., Claim that you belong to a very old Iyer or Iyengar family from somewhere down South -carefully select a completely abandoned agraharam for this purpose and there are many- who came to the city a good 50 years back. You are now a full blown iyer or iyengar as the case may be.The rest of the trick you will pick up as you walk the distance. LOL.

Dear Sir,

Does it need any conversion if both are Hindus? Doesn't the wife automatically become a member of her husband's clan?
In fact, after her wedding, a brahmin girl takes even the gOthram of her husband automatically! :flock:

Dear Renu,

It is said 'kAdhalukkuk kaN illai'! Seeing a few lovvu marriages, I think 'kAdhalukku mOOLaiyum illai'! :D

Well Said.

I fall in line with your query as i don't have answer to your query.

greetings,
oh yes my name !! haha...i have a lot of people asking me the same kind of question !!....well maybe that itself proves that im devoted to the almighty and don't really consider the cast differences!! :)
uh...my parents will defiantly will have no objection of this because they also had a love-arranged marriage. so i know for sure that they really do value 'love'.

pha...deyvam only you are. coz actually i havn't really thought of all this earlier. and ofcrs not about how things might change after marriage, simply because im only 18 now! (yea...it's the age you know ;) )
uh...and i think im not really changing any of myself but the just my rituals a little bit. she also actually has no concern about the practices. only thing she says is that it's gonna be tough for me to adapt and she actually does not want me to convert.
she's very sure of not marrying another.n that clearly proved to me that she's not leaving me because she doesn't like me but only because of this 'parent problem'. only problem is her parents. she says her parents will let her stay a spinster but wont get her married to a non-brahmin!!

i never force her :) ...i believe that love cannot be forced. even if it is...it wont stay for long. and that's the only reason i don't believe in arranged marriages.

the thing is that her dad is too sweet. he's a very nice person. i really do respect him a lot. but the only problem with him is this cast-thing. so when she told me "it's too very hard to leave my dad and come'' i could totally understand that. he's too good a person to be hurt this way.
oh yea...i kno...the 'thenkalai' and the 'vadakalai' people differ in their brahmin accent and pronunciation itself.
*sigh* .....

haha...there's no reason for me to get mad at you!! infact i wanted a very honest reply to really clear my mind !!
thank you soo much!! :)

thank you soo much !! i indeed love her beyond words can ever explain!!
i wanted to do that. like...go right ahead and talk to their parents. at least that would tell them i have courage to bring it to them directly. im sure i can convince them that their girl is gonna be the happiest with me and that i can take care of her like no other!! but im afraid if i really go forward and if they just stop n refuse to hear a word...that is gonna put the situation into real depth. and i also fear it might just ruin her teen life. she might be forced to stay home, not to go to college, not to have a mobile, etc etc...
anyways...thanks a lot :)

uh....i'v seen that page before n have read it like 15 times over and over again. i signed up on this forum only coz i thought i might get a better, clear views!
anyways thank you :)

haha...well you do have a point. im sure my parents will accept coz even they had a love-arranged marriage. only problem is from her side. even if my parents had refused to accept i would not have really bothered. it's my life....for some1 who brought me up for 18 years i cant really lose 80 years of happiness. thought it would defiantly hurt me...it's no match for the happiness that the marriage would give me!! but i done want her to be hurt at any cost (and her father too...he's a very nice man and he dosnt deserve to be hurt as much as losing his daughter). i know that i wont be acceptable even if i convert only now -.- ....i asd her about the conversion and itseems her patents will want a 'pure' race :P ....now what do i do :/
